Arrow 2.08 "The Scientist" Review: Who Are You?

Dec 5, 2013

This week’s episode of Arrow, “The Scientist,” was part one of a two part sequence ending the fall run of the show. The episode was written by Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg with the teleplay by Kreisberg and Geoff Johns. The episode was aptly directed by Michael Schultz in his first outing for the show this season. The episode is most notable for the introduction of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) – the Flash.

I have to admit that when I heard that Gustin had been cast, I was disappointed. I’d previously seen him as Sebastian on Glee. I didn’t find the character on Glee likable, and I have to admit that affected my opinion of him as an actor. Within the first five minutes of this episode, I fell in love with Barry Allen. Gustin is simply terrific in the role. A series, you say, CW? I say bring it! And the sooner the better – just don’t steal our Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards).

If you are a Flash fan from the comics, you no doubt got all the little shout outs to the quintessential characteristics of the Flash. For example, it’s a running gag in the comics that Allen is always late. In the comics, he gets his super speed when he is hit by lightening in his lab and a box of chemicals shatters all over him, so I was on the edge of my seat when Allen was climbing the shelf of chemicals and rearranging them because they were dangerous the way they were stored and it was thundering and lightening outside! I liked how they used Barry’s backstory – the hunt for his mother’s killer as motivation for him trying to meet the Vigilante and tracking these kinds of “impossible” crimes.

I think this episode may have suffered somewhat from throwing a lot of balls in the air – and we haven’t seen all of them pinned nicely to the wall yet. This may happen more obviously in the next episode. It’s hard to review only one part of a two parter! One of the themes that is running through not only this episode, but the season in general is one of identity. This ties in with the title of the episode, in fact, as we delve into the identity of “The Scientist.” Is that scientist merely Barry Allen, however? It could also refer to Brother Blood (Kevin Alejandro) or Dr Ivo (Dylan Neal).

Oliver (Stephen Amell) seems to be struggling with his own identity, particularly after having to go against his vow not to kill again by killing the Count (Seth Gabel) last week to save Felicity. He’s also splitting his time between being a son and a CEO. We see him struggling in all of those roles. Isabel (Summer Glau) returns in the episode and tells him that he can’t be both a good son and CEO when it comes to Moira (Susanna Thompson). Oliver completely misjudges how society views his mother even after having been acquitted and the party her throws her is a dismal failure. Moira even tells Isabel that Oliver is a dreadful judge of character. While that is meant as an insult to Isabel, it seems that Moira is also correct. And while we’re talking about Isabel and Moira, there definitely seems to be some history there! In the comics, that history centers around Robert Queen, so it looks like they may be going there – and we may have some great cat fights coming up!

Oliver misjudges Barry. However, it’s clear that as Barry tells his story to both Felicity and Oliver that Oliver quickly changes his opinion and becomes sympathetic. He tries to defend himself with Felicity by saying he lied about who he is, but Felicity calls him on it by pointing out that that’s what they do every day. It was sweet watching Felicity and Barry quickly develop a mutual attraction and bond over their geekiness and Barry does feel like a good match for Felicity, but after the heat that’s been brewing between Felicity and Oliver this felt like it was a huge turnaround on Felicity’s part – especially when she tells Barry that she doesn’t like Oliver. Now, that could be read as her not liking Oliver but still liking Arrow, but I found it very jarring. I did love Oliver surprising Felicity with Barry at the party, and having Barry say he couldn’t dance was an hilarious shout out to his time on Glee – and also foreshadowing his fleetness of foot in the future as the Flash. I also liked Oliver warning Felicity that Barry would be carded at the bar!
In the flashbacks to the past, we also see shifting identities and love interests. Shado (Celina Jade) wants to know who Sara (Caity Lotz) is and what about Oliver’s love for the girl in the picture. She is clearly not impressed by his answer. Meanwhile, Oliver’s suspicions grow about the changed relationship between Shado and Slade (Manu Bennett). This is confirmed when Slade, thinking he is about to die, confesses his true feelings for Shado to her.
I think another clear case of misidentification on Oliver’s part centers around Slade and the intruder who steals the centrifuge. I think that he was convinced that the intruder was Slade. Oliver finally tells Diggle (David Ramsey) and Felicity a bit more of what happened on the Island because he’s concerned that this is the same serum they found on the submarine in the flashback. He tells them that Ivo injected men to try to make weapons out of them and that everyone Ivo injected died. But Oliver is the one who injected Slade, so I don’t think he’s dead, but I do think he’s gone over to the other side.

Diggle had some great lines that will resonate going forward. He mentions vampires when the blood is being stolen and then he scoffs at the possibility that aliens may be next. Superman, of course, is technically an alien and a member of the Justice League. So yes, Diggle, there are aliens in your future!

The present crisis, however, is manmade. Blood is now being served by Cyrus (Graham Shiels) – also known as the Acolyte in the comics. Clearly, those new arrows Barry suggests to Felicity are going to come into play. The episode only features two fight scenes, but they are both epic. The chase scene in particular if fantastic and once again, kudos to James Bamford’s amazing team. The fight between Arrow and Cyrus is terrific – I particularly liked pinning Cyrus to the ground with arrow through his feet! What I didn’t like quite so much was the fairly obvious wire work to throw Arrow into the airduct in the ceiling and the wall. It’s a testament to how much of the stunt work isn’t rigged that when it is, it’s a bit jarring. Also? Directors – please don’t speed up the action to make the throws look “better” – this is a personal pet peeve for me.

Barry is taken into the circle of trust by the end of the episode to help save Oliver who has been injected with a mystery substance. Gustin does a great job in this scene as the camera shows his dawning realization of where he is and who he is with. I loved him asking Felicity earlier about the vigilante and speculating that his green costume indicated he’d trained in a jungle because black would have been better in the city and that he had to have partners, especially one with computer expertise. It was nice to see the pay off as he realizes he was right.

Oliver’s attempts to keep Roy (Colton Haynes) and Thea safe seem to be backfiring spectacularly. It’s interesting to see Thea throw herself into helping Roy and Sin (Bex Taylor-Klaus). She doesn’t appear to be jealous and tells Roy she just likes that he helps people. This seemed like a bit of a jump in her attitude, but I like that Thea is seeing more action. However, Oliver shooting Roy in the leg seemed completely out of character for him and not a great way to keep him from getting hurt. Perhaps, this is simply the result of his continuing guilt over Slade? That he is willing to do anything to prevent Roy from getting killed?

Finally, a quick word about Moira in the episode. They play with her “identity” a bit in the episode as well. At first, when Malcolm (John Barrowman) returns and threatens her, it looks like she will have to cave into his demands and tell Thea he’s her father. Then we see her talking to some mysterious guy and hiding what’s going on from Oliver and Thea – shouldn’t Oliver’s radar being going crazy? However, I loved it when she completely turned the table on him by letting Ra’s Al Ghul know he’s alive, letting him take care of the Merlyn problem. Still, it does complicate her character – she’s still willing to go to any means to protect her family. And I’m a little sad because it means we likely won’t see much of Barrowman in the near future.

Next week’s episode looks to be epic. According to the synopsis for the episode, we are about to lose someone. Any speculations on who it might be? I’m worried for Quentin (Paul Blackthorne). He was barely in this episode and has had a great redemption arc this season. Do you think that Oliver will experience any lasting effects from whatever he was injected with? What did you think of this episode? Are you looking forward to a Flash spinoff? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Great review! Really liked the episode as well.

Interesting thought about Quentin possibly dying. I always tend to think (and hope) that series regular die at the beginning or the end of the season, but I guess nothing is impossible with this show. However, Paul Blackthorne recently tweeted a photo of him and Alex Kingston on set, who will appear in episode 14 (https://twitter.com/PaulBlackthorne/status/407632644319752192). So it probably won't be Quentin, and I am glad it's not him. I can't think of any other series regular that will bite the dust, so it's probably a guest star (Sin maybe?).
Also, I wonder who the three ghosts will be. I believe the promos show they are Shado, Slade and Tommy, but I am actually hoping Robert and Malcolm will also appear. We'll see next week!

First, thanks for the great review! I enjoy reading these.

Oh no! I hadn't seen anything about next week's mid-season finale, so I didn't realize we were going to lose someone! GAH! I don't know WHO I'd "want" it to be, honestly. *bites lip*

I really enjoyed this episode -- primarily because of the introduction of Barry Allen and the fact that it set things up nicely for next week. I've never watched Glee, so this was the first time I saw the kid playing Barry -- really liked him. Earnest, intelligent, determined and with just enough innocence as to be endearing.

Not sure what I think about Moira and her Ra's Al Ghul connections (mostly b/c I can't think of that name w/out thinking of Christian Bale's Batman and it just gets all tangled up in my head). The only time she hasn't seemed to be dealing in subterfuge was while she was in prison and even then she had a whopper of a secret. To be perfectly honest, she's my least-favorite character, but losing her would shatter Thea and Ollie.

Sad that there will be no more Manu in the island flashbacks, but I'm also ready for that to move forward a bit so we can see what the whole deal was with Sarah thinking she killed Ollie.

Really enjoying the attraction between Felicity and Barry -- it seems completely natural, and mutual. Which, I believe, is why she said she didn't "like" Oliver. The attraction between her and Oliver/Arrow may not be completely one-sided, but Oliver has made it clear that he's not going to fan that flame anytime soon, so good for Felicity for moving forward. Though I thought it was interesting how that seemed to feed into Oliver's initial mistrust of Barry.

As for your question -- I hope there are lasting effects, at least through the end of the mid-season finale. For Oliver to have been so thrashed both Dig and Felicity had to not only rescue him, but bring an 'outsider' into their circle of trust it would be a bummer if he was just injected with some kind of magic CW serum and back to normal. It needs to be a big enough deal to justify Barry's inclusion in the secret, y'know? ONLY thing I'm really disappointed about was that we didn't get to see HOW Dig and Felicity managed to get Oliver back to the Arrow's lair and smuggle Barry out of the train station and to the same local, seemingly in very short order as Oliver's pulse was weak. *missing scene alert*

  3. Did Barry mention "the Blur" when talking to Felicity?

  4. As to who is going to die i think it's Shado. When Sara meets Ollie she asks what happened to Slade implying she already knows Shado's fate. Plus it seems to be a key point in the show that there be aninheritance of the green hood. Shame as i really like her.

  5. OMG - can't believe I missed that tweet! LOL! But thanks for putting my mind at ease! I think you could be right about Sin. I'm betting you could be right about the ghosts - it would seriously rock to have Colin Donnel do a cameo! My vote is Yao Fei, Robert, and Tommy... we don't know if Shado and Slade are actually dead, do we?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Definitely a possibility. I'd hate to lose Celina Jade though.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That would be my take on it.

  8. All ghosts were featured in the promos. They are Tommy, Shado, and Slade.

  9. Thanks! But stop fanning those fan fic flames!

Moira's character has never been completely clear to me - which I kind of like. I can't completely trust or distrust her.
Grant Gustin played a completely different character on Glee - a conniving private school brat. I'm so impressed by him - and apparently Rickards just has off the charts chemistry with everyone! I adore her! (girlcrush!) I liked that Oliver had a protective vibe going with her - more like a big brother/best friend thing. At least this keeps the spark from igniting too soon...
I really don't think Slade is dead. I'm wondering if Oliver is going to end up with some sort of super-power from this injection? Maybe just enhance his natural abilities, but we've got lots of "powered-up" DC characters heading to Starling City so maybe they are just giving him a bit of an edge...

  10. Ah. Thanks - haven't had time to watch them yet! *blushes*

  11. The press release made it sound like someone dies on the present sroryline.

  12. Won't be Sin either Bex tweeted a picture on set while they were filming 212.

  13. Good review. I pretty much share your pluses and quibbles (not that that's what makes it a good review, but it doesn't hurt). I didn't even recognize Grant Gustin from Glee at first--agreed that he was impressively different here. also agreed that Ollie shooting Roy was a real head-scratcher of a moment. I've been finding the show generally a bit less successful this season on keeping events and characters plausible; stuff like that seems way too much of artificial tension-creation.
As for who we're gonna lose, I doubt it will be Laurel, but gine how little they've done with her--and how poorly they've done it--I almostt hope it is her that goes down.... I know, my bad....

  14. Consensus from comic book community is that he was talking about professor Zoom/Reverse Flash.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would go with Shado as well

    ReplyDelete
  16. I genuinely disliked Barrys acting, it was like the definition of 'meh'
that being said the episode was awesome, the fights were well done and Malcom was kept pretty creepily around their house.

I kinda missed Blood that episode and: how is it not obvious that Slade returns from the dead as a super soldier ?

  17. Just started watching, so haven't read anything yet.
But: OMG that Benny is so cute! I thought I was to old to like his "age"......

  18. I think Det. Hilton is going to be the one getting killed. He's Quentin ex-partner, he's featured in the promotional pictures for the next episode, and something happens that sends Quentin to the hospital. In other words, I think it's a red shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It will be fun to see Tommy again, even for a little while.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well, now I'm leaning toward Laurel! OMG!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Aw. Too bad. Well, I'm glad it's not a main, main character, but I really like that actor and so far he's had nothing to do on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Katie and Quentin shot a scene together for 2.12 and tweeted about it, and there are spoilers she'll get closer to Blood (without knowing his secret of course.) I think Laurel is safe.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm hoping we'll see her get more to do in the second half of the season. I think this season is just different as they build toward the justice league storyline, but I am finding the writing a little less tight - but again, I attribute that to a longer story arc. Last season, each episode had a nice tight thematic core. This season seems more organic.

    ReplyDelete
  24. LOL! I'm too old for Amell, and every time he and Gustin had a scene I thought how old he looked! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks! I loved Oliver's snarking and Moira's triumph too! I really felt that you got to see Felicity and Barry bond over being the smartest people in the room. She admires Oliver's heroism, but I think that Felicity is going to be as attracted to a man's mind as his body too. I hadn't heard about chemistry between the two of them so maybe it was easier to see if you weren't looking for it - I know I'm often disappointed by a movie someone has raved about for instance.

I completely agree about why Oliver shot Roy. He was in a hurry and that was one way to keep Thea safe. I agree that that's who he was trying to keep safe - and that's who Roy meant. It just seemed awfully extreme in the moment. Why not drug him and lock him up somewhere?

As for Felicity's wardrobe, she's so pretty, I rather like her new sexier outfits - though the pink number with the cut-away cleavage was definitely over the top. I liked when she showed up at the lair after the party and had changed and pulled her hair back into her trademark ponytail. I wonder if she is trying to dress more the way she sees the other women in Oliver's life dress.

As for the shoes? Love 'em. Ask anyone who knows me, and they will tell you that I have a weakness for stilettos. I live for them. I have a collection. I wear them. I prefer 4-5 inch heels. And in fact, I'll wear them all day or out at night or both. I've been known to stage manage in them when I'm popping chairs and tables off stage in them. So we'll have to disagree about the shoes! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ok. Good to know. I actually really, really like Katie - but my goodness! She is SO thin this season!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Same she is my favourite but it seems likely she is going to bite the dust

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'll give you the shoes, (it is my personal prison that I can't find a pair of attractive heels that I can wear all day without pain). But the outfits don't ring true for the introverted geeky girl that was Felicity because they're way more sexual than those Isabel, Laurel or Moira wear. (A professor of mine once told me that you should dress for the position you want next.) I've read that it's a nod to Power Girl but it seems out of character for Felicity, who might want to bring everyone's attention to how smart she is, but not how sexy and hot she is. Does she even see how sexy she actually is?

I'm glad Moira is going to be taking on Isabel, because Isabel's way out of Oliver's league. He's a minnow to her barracuda.

I hope the serum doesn't super-power Oliver. Once of the things I like about his character is that he's an ordinary guy, just like us (but with better abs) who is doing what he can to save his city.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm hoping we'll see her get to eat a sandwich or something....

  30. Awesome review!! Loved it. This episode was really good. There were many elements just thrown out and it was fun seeing it. Laurel absent again. Any thoughts?? The Flash spinoff?? BRING IT ON! Grant was amazing. I've never seen Glee before but he was great. I liked him a lot. Some scenes,I was like OMG he is so cute I want to hang out with him like NOW to see his cuteness". Heart stopped seeing Slade like that. Love the way they portray island Oliver and present day oliver. You can see how he's changed. Moira rubbing it in Merlyn's face was downright sassy. She even went to rub it in Isabel's face. Cat fights yeah we're ready. Diggle's one liners were damn funny. He hits his expressions out of the park.Seeing Oliver react to Barry and felicity was different. He seemed helpless and knew he was feeling something else. Pumped about next episode before the hiatus!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hey,Saw this site where they've said they are going searching for an african american lead in the pilot for The Flash as Barry's love interest Iris west.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think the outfits are a way of showing that working for Arrow has increased her self confidence - but really, I agree with you - they are too much.

If they stick with the comics on this, Moira and Isabel have an interesting history...
I also like that Oliver is just an ordinary guy - well, as ordinary as you can be with those abs! I wouldn't want him to have major enhanced powers, but just a small added kick could be helpful - even if only temporarily to help defeat these "super-soldiers."

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks! Grant's character on Glee was the exact opposite of what Barry is - I'm just so impressed with him as an actor! There really wasn't anything for Laurel to do in the episode, so I guess it makes sense that she wasn't in it, but they really so seem to be struggling with what to do with her character right now - I hope they figure it out soon as I really like Katie! The ratings were crazy good, so I'm sure the Flash is a definite go now!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yea,he's a bad guy on Glee right?? It's easy being a good guy but acting geeky and nerdy and dumb are tough. And combing geeky and cute together was so cool. I felt so heart warming seeing Grant as Barry. I want The Flash NOW. It made sense Laurel wasn't in the episode but it's taking a toll right? Every character is growing, they should give her character more depth. The writers said she'll come back hard next episode. Lets see. Do you think they should show more Diggle and what did you personally think about Oliver? Think he was jealous??

    ReplyDelete
  35. He's character was super nasty on Glee. I felt like Barry was just so much the male equivalent of Felicity - making him perfect for her. But they can't steal her for the Flash show! I really didn't feel like Oliver was really jealous - more big brother/protective friend - partly because I felt like he really liked Barry too. I would definitely like to see more Diggle. I like that he gets those great one liners and I love when he mentors Oliver. But I'd really, really like to see more fight scenes with Diggle and Oliver having each other's backs....

    ReplyDelete
  36. I liked this episode. Thanks for your review and insight to the comics. I
love all these fun facts although I do not read comics, it helps get a
better understanding and to see what great job the writers do with all
    the references.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You are very welcome! I'm not an expert on the comics by any means. I love how they adapt the comic material - it's rarely exactly as it happens in the comics so it's fun to spot the similarities and then account for why they may have gone in a different direction. The writing on this show is truly excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes on more Diggle and Oliver.
I had the Impression that Oliver does not have a clue what he feels about Felicity. Although I agree that it was a big turn from last episode, I liked that she felt attracted to someone else.

    ReplyDelete
  39. yea me too! It didn't seem brotherly to me. It was totally a variation of feelings he was showing to Felcity.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Barry is male Felicity-no doubt. They look great together and they have really cute chemistry too. He babbles and she babbles and they both laugh at each others jokes. I thought Oliver was jealous, don't know if it was because I ship them or because he's never acted jealous. Oliver didn't seem jealous at all even when Laurel was with Tommy. I agree with you on all points about diggle!! YAY!!. Diggle should kick more butt. He always puts sense into Oliver.Bromance at it's peek.

  41. Yeah rereading it I get that now too. Still think Shado will die at some point, but you are right.

    Good review Lisa.
The episode was action-packed. This is a baby show (early) so I'm starting to get the rythm of things, such as the concept of flashbacks of the island between the life of being the vigilante of a billionaire.
I actually watched straight away with Arrow when it came out on dvd and I never heard of the comics. My point is Arrow is top 3 greatest shows I watch, but the storylines I want more of or dropped. Like more Thea and Moira with the daddy issue and speedily just let the secret out.
I like Laurel and detective Quentin and would enjoy seeing more of them.
Oliver just get a girlfriend or is he just gonna be the playboy?. The love triangle I'm not a fan of that's the only nitpick I have. The big storyline I want is when he lets his secret out (if ever) to his family. Or even dectective Quentin, plus I always wonder when Oliver gonna really just let some genuine emotions, like he really should crack the sh**** by now, is he a robot?!. I hope he wasn't genetically modified on the island but I really hope to see more Oliver and he start telling some-one about th island in more detail to get things off his chest, like to Digg and Felicity for example so they can have better understanding aswell.
Okay that was just my perspective of the show but I adore it so much.
I am glad Barry got to be part of the team, I had no doubt he wouldn't either. No good writer would put a character on any show (longer then 5 mins or not killed) to have them quickly dismissed. I just love the reaction when he saw Oliver!.
Are we going to lose some-one I hope not!. Having just said about Barry I hope it won't be him. I don't feel this person won't be close to Oliver. I wonder if losing some-one requires taking them back such as he/she was kidnapped?.
Due to the promo I don't think there would be long-lasting effect of the drug,. The drug could just be like a bee-sting or Oliver needs some adrenaline to beat through this. I think this is temporary thing with the drug effects.
What's a flash spinoff? If it is about the island of a full episode, yeah I am excited for that. I hope it clears up alot of things of what else happen to the island, how Oliver fought them and who's alive and dead etc.
So it was an awesome episode and look forward to more :)
