2013 - Year End Stats - Most Popular Shows, Commentators and More

Dec 18, 2013

Update: 18th December Thanks to LittleDreamer for spotting a mistake in the Comments Stats which have now been fixed.

We'll as 2013 draws to a close it's time to look at all the various facts and figures for 2013 here at SpoilerTV. It's been our record breaking year as you can see from the above chart in that we have already smashed last years record of 61.4 Million Pageviews with a total of nearly 73 Million, and we still have over 2 weeks left of 2013!

In every metric/stat we have beaten 2012's stats.

Lets hope 2014 is as good, if not better, than 2013.

Popular Shows of 2013
Here is a full list of the most popular shows on SpoilerTV for 2013. These are based on Pageviews/comments/polls/facebook likes, tweets and G+1's

Here are the Top 25 Shows. We've also included their previous scores and ranks so you can see how shows have improved/declined.

Notable stats include Castle being by far the most popular show. The Mentalist being the most improved show of 2013 as well as big gains for Castle, OUAT, HIMYM, and NCIS. We also see 6 shows make the table for the first time. Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, Rookie Blue, Scandal, Lost Girl, NCIS: Los Angeles and New Girl. I wonder which of the new shows this year will make the charts for 2014?

  1. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and bet Castle will be 2014's most popular show

    ReplyDelete
  2. Congrats! And thanks for sharing! Always a nice thing to read :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. People said that about Supernatural in 2010 when it was unstoppable. I would not be surprised to see a new winner next year.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Castle & Beckett will be getting married next year - I think that'll sway the odds

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow, I didn't expect to see my name up there. Why do the numbers mean though on the "Most Active People"-Ranking?
And I think it's crazy how the 4 most watched sneak peeks are all from Castle.

I'm happy that the site is doing so well and that it keeps growing. Congrats to Andy & the SpoilerTV-Team!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hate seeing Person of Interest so low on the Popular Shows of 2013
: Rankings, I thought for sure it was gonna be higher thanks to the Endgame trilogy. And Nikita and Grimm nowhere to be found! Other than that, great list!

AM I the only one who thinks that Castle has an ungodly ammount of love on this site? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  7. Thanks. "Active" comments I believe is the number of "main" comments, not replies to others. Unfortunately disqus does not define what it is exactly.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh ok, that makes sense. Another question: Is there a way for others to access these rankings or is it limited to the site owner?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Happy to see my favorite shows there, especially HIMYM.
Didn't expect to see my name on the comments list.
This must have taken you ages to compile, Andy.

  10. Remember that we cover over 240+ shows here on SpoilerTV, so any show making the top 25 is doing great. It's in the Top 10% of all shows.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The only thing they have publically available is this

    http://spoilertvhome.disqus.com/community.html

It's the totals since the site stared using Disqus.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ha :) Not too long, I have some some scripts that I wrote in 2011 to compile most of the stats. I had to do a few by hand but only took about an hr.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I've seen this one a while ago, I was hoping for something beyond the Top5.
    But thanks anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  14. You can get a longer list of the top commentors via the community tab.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm glad to see most of my favorite shows on this list, especially Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I feel so dumb right now. Thanks for pointing that out.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh damn, that is a lot of likes. Didn't expect that one, but yay! And it's nice to be in the most active, too.

I think Sleepy Hollow will be popular next year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. So glad to see BatB on the list ~ that's my fave show. To all of you in US who don't watch ~ PLEASE go to cwtv.com and watch Season 2 or Netflix for Season 1 ~ give this show a chance! Then you'll know why our fandom is fighting so hard to keep our show on air ~ Season 1 was so romantic and Season 2 is totally rebooted and amped up with improved writing cool new Beast FX and kickass action ~ its a HUGE HIT overseas ~ just frustratingly not in US where the ratings are based. I like so many of the show's international fans have to resort to watching BatB online and we twitter trend every episode of Season 2 in US and WW every Monday before the show went on hiatus ~ I hope this tells you how good BatB is and how MUCH the fans love this show.
I am NOT to proud to BEG ~ please watch and help us save our show!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yay Mentalist! Happy for Castle fans too :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I´m happy to see Game of Thrones doing so well. I see that a lot of people are keeping an eye on the casting rumours, it has been so much fun.

Also great to see Arrow and The Walking Dead doing so good.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, nice to see some cable shows up in the tables.

    ReplyDelete
  22. e@n So well said my fellow #Beastie fan. There are crucial days ahead of us and we need more support in the USA. I live in Florida and am spreading as much interest as possible, wearing my "Support Beauty and the Beast" T-Shirt while I go shopping, "Honk if you love Beauty and the Beast" bumper sticker! Going to social media sites like this one, which I love! SpoilerTV is a huge help in giving us true statistics and lighting fires underneath us to go beyond the distance for a truly wonderful show! Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  23. the page is getting bigger by the years! i started to comment a few months ago, but always visited it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ean I like your words and I agree. I'm an international fan too and I want the show to stay on air too. I don't get why people in other countries like it more than in the US. But like you said, we don't count for ratings. I don't understand why you already have 4 down-votes, I think this isn't very respectful. You just stated in a nice, polite way that you like BatB. We are not all crazy fans! We all have different taste and can't all like the same shows. But I just read them and up-vote the ones I like and have respect for other opinions and leave it at that (except when comments are hateful or something, to me that's the only reason to down-vote). I wish everybody would show that respect. But that's just my humble opinion.
    I love #BatB!

  25. This kind of article is why I enjoy this site so much. I came to this site specifically because of Castle but because of the insightful comments by posters, I have found a couple of new shows that I am enjoying. Thank you for all of your hard work, it is most appreciated. Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks @cris , that's very kind of you.

  27. It is so wonderful to see this site gaining:) I am a TV addict(i watch way Way WAY too much!) but unfortunately my friends don't, so it's awesome to have a fun place to discuss it! i swear i love reading the comments as much as watching the shows because some are informative and downright hilarious. Your hard work is greatly appreciated:)

For the next year i have a suspicion but Sleepy Hollow, and especially The Blacklist(please please let it be), will make it on to a few of these lists. Also, i believe The Walking Dead will trample the competition yet again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm happy that the site is doing so well and that it keeps growing. Congrats to Andy & the SpoilerTV-Team!

    ReplyDelete
  29. We kicked some serious ass! I am happy!! My personal life has sucked for 2013, but not my happy place (that would be this site. haha) And omg! I made two list!! I'm sorry i've never made the list before, so i'm surprised! Awww....And i just woke from a nap too, that was a nice treat to wake up to. I have a lot of shows, but the one i'm most happy for that ranked up is Arrow. I can't be more happy for it. And i'm DYING for it's return in 2014!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow this was such a good and fun read..

    Good job!
Also happy to see most of my favorite shows doing so well!

  35. Ha, thanks you. Yes the lunatics are running the asylum ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think my new year resolution is to comment more on this site. which im sure is what I said last year. If anyone wants to give me a kick and remind me everyday feel free haha

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'll setup an auto-emailer to send you an email every hr of every day if you like ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. joking aside I probably need that hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  39. I hope so too!! Thank You!!! = )

    ReplyDelete
  40. I want to ask what "Most Liked Commentator" actually means? Is it the people who have received the most upvotes on their comments through DISQUS? Either way, I believe it's wrong to include the most liked commentators, as often the best commentators are the ones who may be ignored by others or even downvoted for their comments. "Most Liked Commentator" basically rewards people for bowing to social expectations and writing comments just to get upvotes (for example posting "This show should be cancelled" on Dads and "This show should be renewed" on NCIS despite possibly having exactly the opposite feelings). "Most Active Commentator" is a great feature, because it helps to make people post more - whether positive or negative - to be on the list next year and thus helping the site's community grow further by causing discussion, but "Most Liked" shouldn't have been in this article. It sends a signal that it's good to comment what people want you to instead of having your own opinions. And that's just not professional for a website like SpoilerTV where comments are a huge part of the community.

Something to consider for next year.

    ReplyDelete
  41. that may be what it is like on other sites, but if you look at the list of most likes it is actually users who contribute to the conversations on this site and do not just post the comments you have mentioned above. Those types of posts usually get very little recognition on this site :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Im with you, I love BATB, no matter there are always going to be trolls down voting shows, it's obvious they have nothing better to do let's ignore them and continue to enjoy this wonderful show as long as we have it!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Spoiler Site adm I wanted to let you guys know how much I love this site it's very enjoyable and informative I also like the easy breezy format, so keep up the good work, I'm sure going to keep reading!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks @Brenda Benton , glad you enjoy the site.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Do you mean that the "Most Liked" list refers to the people who tend to reply and start a conversation? Then what do the "Most Active" list mean? Or did I just confuse myself more now?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Most active - the people that have commented the most
Most liked - are the people who have had the most likes / up votes

People get up votes (likes) if someone likes their comment. If you look at the most active and most like list you will see that people in the most like list are not on it for just putting comments just to get likes. They are people that contribute to the conversations :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's funny how France is number 4 on the most popular country visitors when I feel like we are the worst at speaking english ! lol Faith is restored now !! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm very suspicious whether that data is correct or not. Obviously a lot of people on the list are correct, but if people do engage in conversations and are downvoted, they are not on the list of most liked, basically? That brings me back to my original post, that most active is good, but most liked provides the essence that "contribute to the conversation, but please make sure to be upvoted!" is the way to go to be included. I hope you understand my point.

    ReplyDelete
  49. i understand your point but its very rare people tactically up vote and down vote people on the site :) At the end of the day this is just a list of stats people might be interested in :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Enjoyed the stats. Amazing how in-depth these are.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Congrats klutzy_girl! You hustle hard here (and on ONTD), you deserve the recognition :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's interesting looking at these stats.

Trying to remember exactly when I started commenting here. I found this site in maybe 2010, but did not start commenting until maybe the last couple years.

I remember looking at these stats last year.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm sorry, i have to step in and disagree. I've been coming here for yrs, and i, along with a lot of people on this site, or that list. Always contribute to conversation, and we don't do it for "upvotes" Not at all...We give very thorough honest opinions/comments with others on this site. And tbh, i have gotten my share of downvotes. And it does not bother me. B/c everyone has a different POV. People use the downvote or upvote button when they disagree or agree with one's comments. B/c that's the quickest way to give an opinion, rather than arguing half the time with some people if they don't see eye to eye. But in no way should you think that the people in this article only make conversation to get "upvotes" you're way off. I've "known" these people for quite awhile, and every one of them has had thorough comments that are debatable in one way shape or form, and they couldn't care less whether their comment was voted up or down. It happens everyday. So we're preety much used to that. It's about having well talked out conversations about all of our favorite shows at the end of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Congrats for the record. surprised that there are more French than German visiting this site. Never thought US shows to be so popular there.

    ReplyDelete
  55. wow these people have all the numbers under control! and they even know where we come from: D

    ReplyDelete
  56. You don't have to apologize, I want to hear as many opinions as possible.

Here's my fear in my original comment: If somebody makes a lot of comments, really like insane amounts, then they get on the list of Most Active. This is something they are responsible for. If a person doesn't comment that much, but writes really great posts when they do, they can get an insane amounts of upvotes, and therefore end up in the Most Liked list. The thing is, that's not in their control. If I spend hours writing a really long and decent comment about something and truly make an excellent debate out of it, and I get 3 downvotes because people (like you said) don't agree, then that means I will be farther from going on the list than someone who writes "Awesome!" and gets 5 upvotes. It's too dependent on other people.

You said you know the people here, but with a growing community like STV, I do expect the site to gain new readers every single day - and that means new commentators. If they don't have time to write that much, but do want to get on the list, they can write posts that the general social expectations tell them to. It sends a signal that here on STV, whether or not you are liked (upvoted) by everyone else decides if you get to be famous on this list or not. Individualism, being able to have your own opinions and expressing them equals (somewhat) happiness, but this list basically promotes people who comment what people want them to. Whether or not that means the people on this list right now are individualists or love to be liked by everyone doesn't matter right now. But if future visitors see this list and don't have the same strength of individualism, then that basically means STV will itself be responsible for getting comments made by people who just want upvotes. That's not what I want for STV, but it's already happening. Try saying you love Dads. You will get downvotes, which will put you farther from winning the Most Liked. Try saying you love Dads one million times, and you can still get Most Active award. Even if STV ignores downvotes and only counts the upvotes on each post, it will still promote comments that follow the general rules of bullying: "Do this, be liked and become popular. Don't do this, go sit in a corner alone!". You see the difference?

You can say that the people in the current list aren't those kinds of people. But on the other hand, we all know STV has grown incredibly in the past few years. The community is growing bigger, and sooner we will have other people commenting than these ones. Is this the correct signal to send to new commentators who might potentially bring in more fans? I personally don't think so. Most Active is great, it promotes debates, no matter positive or negative. Most Liked promotes writing posts that people agree with and shutting up about everything else. If I love a show everybody hates, commenting that will get downvotes, and that punishes me.

This got lengthy, but I hope you understood this.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yes it was pretty lengthy, and from the length you kinda lost me in the middle. (idk maybe b/c it's 2:50am and i'm starting to get tired) Soo let me see if i get this straight, you're upset that we have a Most Liked List, b/c you think it will drive people away and you think that that list is somehow "bullying"?? Idts...this end of the yr poll/event w/e you wanna call it, is an annual thing. And idt it says that at all. If anything it's the opposite. Yes i've known these people for awhile b/c most of us share the same shows. But that is b/c we are regulars. This is my very FIRST time on being on the list, and i was happy about that. TBH i wasn't expecting that at all. And even if i were not on the list, that doesn't make me any less happy for the people that are, nor do i feel these list should stop, especially if it's traditional. But the list aren't always the same, not every yr. If anything, these list promote newcomers to come. Newcomers, come everyday, and i believe that when they see this list, it'll bring up curiosity and say "Hmmm...i wonder how these people think or what they have to say about my shows" Thus, having followers, or having people they can talk to on the site. They can get a feel of everybody. These list to me, shows signs in encouragement not discouragement.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Great post @Shannon, yep that's exactly how they should be viewed :)

I doubt a once yearly post showing our commentator stats is going to put people off at all. I really don't understand this discussion at all :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thank you. Same here! Tbh, his reaction kind of has me so blown away, I've never seen anyone get annoyed or offended, by these lists. I don't understand it either. Hahaha But i think this site does a VERY good job at pulling people in, not pushing them away.

    ReplyDelete
  60. You are missing the entirety of my post.

Most Active = everything you said. Newcomers who see that "Wow, I can post here and have fun" will be able to post here and express their opinion. It will mean that the more comments that they post, the more chance they have to get on the list.

Most Liked = popularity contest, similar to high school. If a commentator has an unusual opinion and get 5 downvotes, it will be discouraging, believe it or not. They won't want to post again and get further discouraged in the future. Whereas those with regular opinions will get 5 upvotes and get on the list quite easily. Don't you see the huge fact here that this "Most Liked" list basically says "Post comments people like, and you can get famous for it! If you don't, ahh well, go somewhere else!" It discourages people, especially nervous newcomers, if their post is downvoted and their hope of being on the list falls flat.

I don't know how I can express it clearer. Frankly, I'm surprised it even takes this much discussion to see the issue.

  61. I'm not sure what you are trying to say? Longer post get you on the stats? Is that what you are trying for? Longer is NOT always better.

  62. Maybe he is just trying to get on the list next year. lol

  63. I don't ever go back and look to see if I have down votes, I don't care one way or the other. I think if the down votes showed who was voting there would be less of them also guest should not be able to vote up or down. Show who you are to vote....just my opinion. ;)

  64. @DarkUFO I just checked the 2012 Year End article and I've noticed this year's stats for "Most Liked People" and "Most Active People" is tremendously lower compared to last year. I think you might have used the numbers for December only, and not the whole year.

  65. No, no, longer is certainly not always better. I was just trying to say that if you post a negative comment, a lot of people will want to explain why it's negative, which makes it longer than if you would be saying something positive, which can be done in as simple as one word. It may not have been explained good enough, but basically, I just meant that positive comments tend to be shorter compared to negative ones, and the Most Liked list promotes the positive ones because they get the most upvotes.

  70. One is your disqus account (#2) and the other is your twitter account (#4)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ah, got it. Thanks! That's a little weird.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I suppose you switched to using Disqus throughout the year?!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Nope. I've always used Disqus, thus the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think disqus automatically switched over during the year from using twitter authenicated accounts to actual disqus accounts.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Ah, got it. That makes sense! Thanks.

  78. I told you I was tired. But I know what you're are saying and I still disagree. So I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. And tbh I think you should let it go, no one else has an issue about these list, (or this site) and I'm surprised you even brought this up as an "issue". Sure, you have something to say, so you want to be heard, that's great. I don't mind that at all, everyone can speak about whatever they want. But for me, this really isn't a big issue, or shouldn't be one at all, so I think I'm done talking about it b/c this discussion has gone on long enough. Take care, see you around the site when I see you.
