Witches of East End - Episode 1.07 - Unburied - Review

Nov 20, 2013

This week on Witches of East End, Penelope Gardiner continued her reign of terror, plotting wicked schemes of vengeance against the Beauchamps.  Meanwhile, Ingrid had a love/hate meet-cute, and Freya learned new information about her perpetual love triangle with Dash and Killian.  And Wendy had a really hard time.  Let's discuss!

Penelope, now revealed to be the shapeshifting Big Bad (or at least, it certainly looks that way!), decided to raise a past version of Ingrid from her grave.  Of course, it had to be the early 1900's Ingrid who was in love with the evil Archibald (Penelope's dad) and hates Wendy for accidentally killing her.  This Zombie Ingrid wrought awkward chaos, not entirely succeeding at anything except getting Wendy down to her last life.

It's a pretty fascinating and strange concept that there can be multiple versions of the same character - as we saw in having two Ingrids this week.  I haven't seen this exact idea in any other supernatural show, which is really saying something given the ubiquitousness of certain themes in this genre.  Wendy may say that every life is completely different, but I can't blame Ingrid for being weirded out by her former self's naughty disposition.

Ingrid also had time (while Zombie Edwardian Ingrid was running amuck) to meet Victor from Dollhouse Mike, a hunky stranger who likes to hang out at the library researching ominous things related to the ongoing story arc of the show.  I can't believe poor Adam just kicked the bucket a couple of weeks ago, and Ingrid's already traipsed down sexy memory lane with Archibald and found a new mysterious hottie to flirt with.  Fate just won't let her breathe between relationships!

Wendy decided to look up Leo, played by a completely adorable Freddie Prinze Jr.  Somehow, the chemistry between these two is such that Leo forgave Wendy for stealing his most treasured butterfly with no explanation.  Wendy and Leo are so cute together that it was  a real shame when Zombie Edwardian Ingrid showed up to trick her Aunt into being tortured all so past Ingrid could a) find the snake key for Penelope/Athena and b) get revenge on Wendy.  Most unfortunately of all, we found out that Wendy's pendant indicates she's now down to her last life (after being killed by Zombie Edwardian Ingrid).

This is very early in the show, so I'm surprised that Wendy has already been stripped down to mere mortality.  Given her propensity for running headlong into death, it begs the question of how she can make this life last.  Witches of East End is admirably brave about raising the stakes more in each episode.

Freya might have taken a spell potion to help her stop dreaming about Killian, but it might have been too late to save her relationship with Dash, who found out about the Freya/Killian kiss from episode 1.  Plus, given Joanna's card reading, we have every reason to suspect that Dash is actually the trickster and Killian the hero brother.  Hence, as Killian indicated right before getting kicked out of Freya's subconscious, there's much more investigation that Freya needs to do before definitively choosing a Gardiner brother to love.  I'm seeing some hints of the way this storyline went down in the novel series, so yeah, I am relatively sure at this point that Dash is a baddie...but what if that's a bait-and-switch?  Can't wait to find out.

  1. Nice review! The show keeps getting better, which probably has to do with the fact, as you've mentioned, that they keep raising the bar this early in the series. Glad to hear it's renewed for another new season!
