Witches of East End - Episode 1.06 - Potentia Noctis - Review

Wow, where to begin?  This week's episode of Witches of East End was one of the most action-packed and shocking yet, with many twists and turns.  

Ingrid hasn't had her fill of messing with dangerous magic yet, so she made herself some memory brownies and went into a dream recap of her previous lifetime.  It was a heady mixture of Edwardian costumes, lusty secrets, and magical deviance that Ingrid recalled...at first the memories were steamily exciting, and then everything went horribly wrong.

After seeing Ingrid with cutie-pie cop Adam, I wasn't too impressed with her ex Archibald, whose hobbies included blood-tinged orgies, casting life-threatening spells to turn a profit, and making seemingly empty promises about the witches of the 1900's going "back where they came from," no longer needing to hide from a repressive and disapproving society.  This last bit is very intriguing.  Will the reveal of where the witches came from lead into the Norse mythology roots of the book series, or will the tv show take the mythology in a different direction?

Ingrid's a naive creature in any lifetime, apparently, and in this flashback we learn that she let her infatuation with Archibald lead her into some awful decisions.  She followed her heart in a way that blinded her to her fiance's true nature until it was too late.

 That Wendy inadvertently "killed" Ingrid was a severe twist in a scene that again showed the lengths Wendy and Joanna will both go to in protecting family.  We also got an explanation as to Wendy and Joanna's estrangement, which brought us nicely to an understanding of where that relationship was when it picked back up in episode 1 of the show.

Now that Ingrid's had this glimpse of her past, she naturally feels a bit awkward around Wendy, as subtly indicated near the end of the episode.  There's an interesting rapport between Ingrid and Wendy, who seem as oppositional as Joanna and Wendy, but share a certain impulsiveness that brings them each a world of trouble at every turn.

The most pitiable character was certainly Archibald's daughter, who is later revealed to be none other than Penelope, Dash and Killian's mother!  I can't wait to learn what her master plan is.  Clearly, Joanna was mistaken about Athena's "death" in the 1960's.

It's incredibly cool that Freya is so skilled with potions...and she's a bartender!  What a perfect segue-up of talent and occupation.  Although Freya ran brisk and efficient damage control on the poisonous prickly thingie from Maura's throat, she seems unable to effect as smooth an approach to her continued encounters with Killian.  The closer Dash and Freya's wedding gets, the more apparent the chemistry between Freya and Killian becomes.  Will Dash and Freya make it down the aisle or not?

Anyway, Freya learned that her own brush with those scary magical briars was hardly the end of that problem when she discovered a whole mess of them hidden in the innards of the Gardiner estate.  Ominous!
