Marshall from United States of Tara, I was always so annoyed when everyone was talking about how radical and wonderful the Kurt storyline in Glee was when at the same time Tara was handling the Marshall storyline much better and not like a PSA.
None from the list, I'm afraid (maybe because I didn't watch half the shows above). TV writers for me don't know how to write a coming out scene without it being over the top or cliches, especially Glee where sexuality is like a playground for the writers. Glee gave some of my friends the idea that sexuality can be changed because many characters there just changed their sexuality like they changed their clothes, and being gay, of course they would eventually give the suggestion that I might need to try harder to change my sexuality to hetero, like the characters in Glee!. I stopped watching Glee for that.
But coming out story that was quite effective to me that wasn't on this list was when Marc in Ugly Betty was coming out to his mother. That was the best for me, it was emotional, but not over the top. Marc's mother ended up disowning her own son but Marc rose above it quite well. I loved it. Still bitter that Ugly Betty was cancelled.
David Fisher from Six Feet Under... and it's not even close. Shameful that it's not on here. I know it's an old, finished premium cable show but... Jack from Dawson's Creek is maybe just as obscure at this point.
Other: Justin from Ugly Betty. That was particularly sweet!! No big bangs. Just going to do dance with Austin at Hilda's wedding while everyone notices it and then watches in awe, nodding in agreement. From start to finish, Justin's whole story in season 4 was very great!!
i`m going for an underrated here: Marshal from united state of Tara, his storyline was kind of great! everything that the kid went trough was great with all the things with his mother!
Kurt stroyline was great at first but then it was kind of annoying
I'll go ahead and say it, as a bisexual - I was a little insulted by how they handled that. They wrote her as a entirely straight character for two years - she loved TWO guys most of that time - and they decided, you know what, she's gay now. The reason they did it was because they didn't want to send the message that would or could go back on it, but it made no sense considering the story they told in the first three seasons. To Joss Whedon, bisexual was a cop-out.
I definitely have to go with Jack from Dawson's Creek. He went through Sooo much. To denial, then to hating himself, then from trying to shift from girls to guys, being not ready buy then wanting to be ready. To being the ONLY gay guy to come out. Which actually he didn't come out til Way AFTER he was ridiculed for his poem. Trying to accept himself, and hating himself, Being paranoid that his father hated him. then have his friends support him. Hell he even got fired from being the coach of the kids soccer team. To trying to feel comfortable at his Anti-prom with his date, To having the courage to have his first gay kiss with Ethan. But it being too late. To stereotyping Tobey (his second bf) for being too gay. Man I could go on and on. But you get the gist. Lol Anyways Jack Mcphee hands down, for me anyway.
TBH, I think Willow had it pretty damn easy. She has all these new feelings once she gets to college. It happens to be a female. (Rolls eyes on that cliche) then afterwards it was all unicorns and flowers. Tara loved her unconditional. Her friends accepted her right away. And the ONLY time it was ever brought up about her going back to gguys was Tara's insecurities in Season 5. Willow never went, for long anyway, through the emotional turmoil. it Lasted like 10 minutes. She was confused at first sure, but then she was completely fine. She was great. And then the writers decided to keep her gay, as to make a statement that it wasn't just a phase, and they hooked her up with Kennedy. Which btw, made NO sense whatsoever. I seriously didn't see the chemistry with them. UghYea Idt Willow had the best coming out storyline at all. Compared to the othersI think hers was a breeze.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteWill from Days of our Lives was a great coming out story.
ReplyDeleteFrak! I can't believe I forgot to include her in the list. God, I'm lame.
ReplyDeleteHe crossed my mind when I was thinking of possible options, but I think this site doesn't cover daytime shows.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch any of these but I always thought Callie on Grey's was very well done and very organic. One of the few season 4 highlights.
ReplyDeleteJames Stinson. Awesome story
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood Lafayette
ReplyDeleteSame!
ReplyDeleteDr Kerry Weaver from ER. That was a shock to me!
