The Vampire Diaries - 5.07 "Death and the Maiden" Consequences

Death and the Maiden closed one chapter of the story and introduced us to another conflict. The consequences of messing with someone's life span and rebirth mean different things for the characters and we will get to see the outcome of Tessa's goodbye gift.

Revenge
Elena and Stefan could relate to their story of taking revenge against people who have wronged them. It always ended badly for them. Unfortunately, my impression is that Stefan isn't just harboring bitterness for the fact that Damon and Elena were happy, but is completely losing himself. Killing Silas didn't solve anything in the end. And that problem might backfire on both Elena and Damon. Additionally, Elena has trouble dealing with the consequences, because she so aptly summarized that she got everything she wanted. Stefan's happiness would be the ultimate cherry on top. But things are never that simple and I'm looking forward to see how she might deal with Stefan's complex emotions.

Doppelganger business
I didn't really care about Silas or Amara's fate, but her death felt more emotional to me, because she was easier to relate to. We can definitely say that Amara and Katherine both represent sides of Elena that reflect one extreme or the other. The wish to die vs. the wish to survive. We had moments that supported this argument. Elena listening in on Amara's conversation with Tessa was just one example. My personal highlight was Elena, Katherine and Amara all meeting each other and having all of them being confronted with such extremes. Ultimately, Elena was fighting for someone's life, while Katherine and Amara were both dealing with their own existences, which is a nice juxtaposition.

Love Stories
Bonnie came back and had an emotional conversation with Jeremy, but it still seems odd to me that they both supposedly love each other so much. The transition didn't really feel natural, because we still have to remind ourselves that their history together is rocky at best.
As for Elena and Damon we can say that their story was dealt with behind the scenes in this episode, which was actually quite refreshing. It definitely felt like another attempt to bring Stefan and Elena closer, although I don't really think that this is what both of them need.
The ultimate conclusion of the destined love between Amara and Silas ended in a heartfelt goodbye between them, although Silas proved that he had trouble ending her life.

Family
Katherine's and Nadia's story is another darker aspect, although it was completely in character for Katherine to continue being dismissive of her daughter. People worry that Katherine's story is over, but I am pretty sure that there will be more to it.
On the other hand, we had an emotional reunion with Bonnie, Elena and Caroline, which reminded me of the earlier seasons that highlighted their friendship. To be honest, I didn't feel that Bonnie's death and her coming back to life was really about her, because Elena and the others didn't think twice about the attempt to turn Bonnie into an anchor to the other side, even though they knew how Amara was dealing with it. I wasn't surprised with the ending and the new problems Bonnie has to solve now. I hope Elena and Bonnie can work together to end her misery.

What did you think of Death and the Maiden?

  1. Agree with everything you said. Especially regarding Bonnie and Jeremy. That relationship seems so forced. Like, now they love each other? They have never spoken about what happened to them, when you know, Jeremy cheated and stated that it was Anna that he has ALWAYS loved. I just feel like if they were going to go that route AGAIN, they could have handled them better last season and at least let them talk about what happened. It's just too weird for me that they are now a couple with all of the unresolved issues from season 3. Feels like writers are just trying to shut Bonnie fans up about her love life.

  2. It definitely lacks in development and I'd rather see both characters single than in a relationship that isn't given any more consideration or thought into it. People won't get invested in a seemingly off screen relationship, because it takes time and effort to make people believe we are supposed to care.

  3. I'm not so sure we've seen the last of Silas. Every Supernatural being who dies is supposed to pass through Bonnie to the other side right? Well we only saw Tessa. If it's they pass through her to find that "peace" rather than the purgatory I think my point still stands. But I'm pretty sure it's the former.

  4. You're right about the first person that every supernatural person needs to pass through the anchor when they die but when Silas died, it was still Amara - that's why you see her scream in pain. The first supernatural being to die after Bonnie becomes the anchor is Tessa.

  5. I completely agree that the writers didn't prepare us for the renewed relationship between Bonnie and Jeremy! So the following is my take on it. I think that in her heart Bonnie never stopped loving Jeremy. She was hurt when she realized he still loved Anna and wouldn't accept a 3-sided relationship - and she shouldn't have to. We all know how badly that works! Now she seems to be letting herself take a chance with Jeremy again. But did she bring him back for herself, or for Elena, or both? I think it was for Elena, first and foremost. That's doesn't bode well for a lasting love relationship with Jeremy. As far as Jeremy is concerned, I think Anna must seem so far away from him now, and he feels guilt about the way he treated Bonnie in the past, and overwhelming gratitude for the sacrifice she made to bring him back. But is it true love on his part? You can't base a relationship on guilt and gratitude. To sum up, I haven't got much hope for Beremy.

  6. Diana, you are the only person I agree with, semi, on this. One thing I have always thought is that everyone was so hard on Jeremy about the Anna situation. Do I think he handled the whole thing wrong, yes, completely but he is supposed to be a teenager after all. I don't know anyone that would handle that well. Jeremy and Anna were in love, and they didn't break up, they didn't decide to see other people or take a break. She died. There was no goodbye, she was just gone. Then he fell for Bonnie and she for him, and they were great together. Until he started seeing dead people. Namely his dead girlfriend (there is no ex there because again, they didn't break up) When Bonnie and Jeremy broke up there were still feelings there. Little glimmers that would pop up and in season 4 they noticeably became a lot closer....and then he died. And when Bonnie found out she was devastated. I think the love has always been there but he hurt her and her losing him, then him losing her made them realize what they had and lost. AND finally, they had a whole summer together, just them, I'm sure that time spent was only them writing emails to her friends. I, in no way feel like this relationship is rushed. I'm just happy Bonnie gets to change her damn clothes because I am sick to death of that outfit.

  7. Umm, I'm pretty sure her dying is considered breaking up, and last time I checked it wasn't even Anna he was in love with, which makes things even more ridiculous. He loved Vicki, he wanted to die and become a vampire FOR VICKI, not Anna. He cared for Anna, yes, but he was in love with Vicki, the ghost!Anna thing was a retcon. There were no glimmers of them still liking each other in season 3, they barely even had scenes after the ghost thing. The only thing we got was when he left for Denver and she said "of course she cares." Season 4, while they had more scenes, it was never in the romantic sense, but more of a friendship sense. Which is why the "fuzzy feelings" thing was weird to me.

JP has already said that they were suppose to get closure in S4, and that Jeremy was never meant to come back from the dead initially, and they argued about him coming back in the writer's room, but decided to bring him back because it would not be believable that Elena would have the "summer of her life" if her brother was still recently dead. So yes, Beremy is forced upon us now because before they would only refer to them as best friends.

Fact of the matter is that relationship was not handled properly, not like all the other relationships on the show.
