The Mentalist - Episode 6.06 "Fire and Brimstone" - Review

NOTE: Please be advised that English is not my first language.

SPOILER ALERT: This episode only aired in Canada. CBS decided not to air this in US due to the FNL and the late time (11pm). So, my american friends, if you didn't watch the episode and don't want to be spoiled, just stop reading, or read at your own risk! :p

This episode starts two days ahead the events of the episode. Lisbon is desperately calling Jane, trying to stop him from doing anything stupid - like killing someone. He whispers a 'goodbye' and then hang off. He's hiding a shotgun, while someone is coming on the door, whistling...
The scene moves back to two days earlier. In his attic, Jane and Lisbon are esposing to Rigsby, Cho and Van Pelt their plan to gather all the five suspects in a room. I'm glad there were also those three to be part of it. That scene brought me back to season three finale, where for the first time Jane pronounced Blake's line "Tyger tyger" to his team.
So, what is the plan? Jane tracks Smith, then McAllister, who also owns him a favour. Lisbon has to talk with Haffner, who's suddenly upset, maybe tired of being trot out as a possible Red John. The hardest part comes with Bret Stiles. He's shown to be far away from Visualize, hunted by the FBI, and into a mysterious ritual with blood... This part creeped me out. Maybe because of the music in the background, always superb, maybe because the way Stiles painted that girl's face reminds me of the same way Red John put his mark on Lisbon's at the end of episode 6.01.

Let me talk about the sunset scene. You may be a shipper or not, but you can't deny how Jane and Lisbon care about each other. That was an intimate and beautiful scene between those two. I'm sure fans have been waiting for this for a long time. I heard many people complain because they wanted more. In my opinion, Jane was sincere when he said to her "You have no idea what you meant, what you mean to me." Even when he reaches out to hug her and Lisbon reacts with no esitation to that gesture. That I called 'progress'. Lisbon is a no-hugger person. She hardly hug someone in purpose. After that moment, I felt they were so embarassed. Maybe Lisbon wasn't expecting something like that. I think those two don't need to kiss or something else to show their feelings because love doesn't need an explanation, don't you agree? I also heard people calling Jane a bastard for the way he left Lisbon all alone at the beach. Watch out: he wasn't enjoying treating her like that. He did what he did to let her safe, because he knew he was going to do something very dangerous - this would explain their later phone call, "You do this and you're throwing your life away." "Bye, Lisbon."
Jane knows Lisbon can't lie at first. When she said to him she wanted Red John to be dead, Jane couldn't believe her. She's a honest person.

Finally the "OMG moment.". When Jane and the final five suspects in a room, you can feel the tension among them. Jane seems so calm, as if he's studying all their expression. He claims he knows one of them is Red John, and the panic explodes in the room. Haffner is the first one to stand up for leaving, but Jane stops him by putting a gun at. Jane orders everyone to take their shirts off after saying he knows Red John has a tattoo on his shoulder. Nobody can't say nothing but doing what he's ordering. It's revealed Reed Smith, Thomas McAllister and Gale Bertram have the tattoo with 3 dots. Jane's face is like "how is that even possible?" There's more as Sceriff McAllister says "It's not what you think." What those dots mean?
Meanwhile, Lisbon is doing a race against time to reach and possibly stop Jane - she even borrows a car from a stranger! But when she arrives at his house searching for him, Lisbon's throwing by an explosion coming from the inside. She looks horrified as the house's burning down, presumably thinking she's lost Jane...

What do you think about this episode? Can you believe at the tattoo?

  1. As always, your reviews are perfect, and I totally agree with you, especially for the sunset scene... I think he left her there for two reasons: 1) in this way she couldn't stop him from killing Red John; 2) he did it in order to protect her... Let's think about it, what could have happend if she was in that room? Do you really think she would have let Jane use the shotgun against one of them? And if so, what if she was in the room when everything blew up?

  4. I'm really hoping these so-called 'clues' to Red John's identity (e.g. three dotted tattoo) are really clues and not false trails.

  6. I think the tattoo is a red herring...

  7. Sadly, I think it is. They could be using the 'Tyger Tyger' conspiracy to continue the show after the Red John storyline. Not sure how much will that appeal to the CBS management in order for them to renew the show's contract.

  8. It is clearly not RJ's trademark, but the symbol of the conspiracy inside law enforcement... but it's clear that RJ HAS the same mark, so it helped reducing the number of suspects to three, at least. We're getting close, and there are only two episodes left until Red John will be done with.... feels surreal to me.

  9. That's the point... maybe they want you to think is one of the 3 with the tattoo, but what if is Haffner or Stiles, who don't have the tattoo? that would be a twist... Or maybe I think this because I think Red John is Haffner..
    I don't know, we'll see!

  11. That beach scene was outstanding. The actors conveyed how deeply Jane and Lisbon love each other with very little dialogue. Bravo, Robin and Simon!!

  12. I think lisbon would have killed ted John in oreder to protect Jane who is a civilian. So jane, knowing this, said those word.. In my opinion, he mean it but he HAD to leave her alone to protect her. He didn't want her to kill rj nor to stop him. So.. But, it's obviously a huge jis moment. I don't believe those two will get together.. But anyway.. I hope so. Hardly.
