The Flash - To get Standalone Pilot instead of Arrow Backdoor Pilot

Nov 18, 2013

There has been a change in the CW‘s plans for The Flash. Originally, the character, played by Grant Gustin, was supposed to appear in three episodes of Arrow this season — No. 8, No. 9 and No. 20, the last one serving as a backdoor pilot directed by David Nutter. Episodes 8 and 9, in which the superhero is introduced only as his alter ego Barry Allen, have already been shot. But now the CW has opted to film a traditional standalone Flash pilot instead of doing a backdoor pilot as Episode 20 of Arrow. With Episodes 8 and 9 serving as an origin story, the plan was for The Flash character to make his debut — red costume and all — in Arrow‘s Episode 20. He will now do it in the pilot. The creative team remains the same, with Arrow co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and series scribe Geoff Johns writing the pilot and Nutter, who helmed the pilot for Arrow, directing. Berlanti, Kreisberg and Nutter executive produce, with Melissa Kellner Berman co-executive producing.

  1. Still wondering if Grant Gustin will make a good "Flash".

  2. I love Grant so I really hope this works out for him.

  3. Maybe having a cross-over event with an arrow episode followed by the Flash premiere would work best, but I prefer stand alone pilots to backdoor pilots, so I think this is a good thing.

  4. I prefer this plan. This way, special powers won't be introduced in Arrow itself, and if it's picked up it will still be a spin-off.

  5. I think it's the better choice. The first ORIGINALS ep was messy, this way people will dig easier into the show and not feel like they missed something. But this could also mean the shot episodes wasn't that good.

  6. Ha! XD
    Yeah, me too.

He does have the look as much as that matters. Plus, he already has a superhero sounding name with the alliteration! XD

  7. From the source article:

"The decision was made after CW brass saw cuts of Episodes 8 and 9, which have been very well received."

  8. I concur with others in this comments section, I believe it is the better choice. I've seen so many backdoor pilots which were just plain bad and had no logic being in the original series.

So a standalone pilot with the possibility of it getting picked up to series sounds great to me. :)

  9. why can't we get a women superhero show instead having a another man superhero

  10. Frankly I think they should keep Arrow a superpower-free zone, so maybe this is a good thing.

  11. Geoff Johns is writing the pilot?!?! Wow, this will be good!

  12. this is such a good idea, can they do this with the spn spin off too? that way we wouldn't have to give up a spn episode for a new "being human" show, the new spin off probably get less hate.

  13. Probably a good idea I hope they do this for the Supernatural spin off too though I doubt it

  14. I think this is a good choice but I could live with it anyway. I am looking forward to this, I love Arrow so I have total faith in this.

  15. It's good to have some new spin off series. And when the same creative team is behind it why not?? The evolution of a superhero from the comic books onto the small screen is fun for fans and something to root for . And I frankly think Grant Gustin will make a good flash. Not all hot guys and bulky dudes are great for superhero movies and spin off's. Look at peter parker in spiderman. He was puny but not bad.

  16. I only watch SPN for Jared/Jensen/Sam/Dean so a spin off isn't something that interests me, I'm not sure how many other fans feel the same and would therefore be less receptive to a spin off cutting into the season then they would be if they shot a separate pilot all together without the Winchester brothers to get a better idea of how the spin would do if it were to get picked up?

  17. I agree with you. But who?? maybe a spin off on Black Canary?? As long as it isn't wonder woman I'm game!

  18. Actually, I think Arrow has pretty much moved irrevocably into the realm of superpowers, what with last week's revelations about Ivo's plans (which I can only assume are connected to the present day Brother Blood storyline).

  19. I'm not sure, it depends on how far they take the whole "drugs that enhance your strength/senses/speed" etc. thing. I mean, Nikita and the recent film The Bourne Legacy had plots like this and neither was sci-fi by any long stretch of the imagination. (Nikita kind of went sci-fi in Season 3, but that was long after the introduction of the regimen, which I could deal with in terms of suspending my disbelief.)

  20. I'm with you on the whole only watching SPN for Sam/Dean. However if done right I guess I won't mind them using an episode for the spin off. I think I'm one of the few fans that enjoyed Bitten, I know it didn't have much Sam/Dean in it but it did provide us with a different perspective on how they are perceived whilst they are on a hunt which I enjoyed. If the spin off is good enough I'd watch, but I'd definitely prefer for the CW to do this kind of introduction instead of a whole backdoor pilot.

  21. and if they were bad they would say so. But probably they won't mess with the Arrow story continuity. either way looking forward to how the not so supernatural flash will look like.

  22. Hmmm... OK. I'm ok with this decision, as backdoor Pilots can take over an existing show and be clunky, but I was also looking forward to his origin story and seeing characters in "Arrow's world" reacting to super powers for the first time. I'm probably going to check out 'The Flash' anyway, especially if I hear good things about it.

  23. Good. They are introducing him in episode 8 & 9 but Arrow didn't need to waste an episode on a backdoor pilot for The Flash.

  24. There are lots of other female superheros who aren't Wonder Woman. These are just a few off the top of my head. Personally - Storm, Rogue, The Scarlet Witch, Zatanna, Big Barda, The Huntress, Electra, Black Widow and Cat Woman have the most interesting story lines.

Female X-Men - Storm, Captain Marvel(Ms. Marvel), Rogue, Jean Grey (Phoenix), Scarlet Witch, Shadow Cat, Emma Frost (White Queen), X23, Domino, Nocturne, Dazzler

Female Justice League - Zatanna, Hawk Girl, Power Girl, Supergirl, Batgirl, Star Girl, Big Barda, Wasp, Oracle, Black Canary, The Huntress, Artemis, Gypsy

Spin Off Female Characters - She Hulk, Spider Woman, Miss Martian

Villians/Anti Heroes - Black Widow, Cat Woman, Harley Quinn,

Other - Lara Croft, The Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), Electra, Black Cat

  25. Instead of using Arrow's budget to pay for the back-door pilot, they are investing more money in creating The Flash its own pilot. Do you think they'd do that if they weren't positive about its chances? Okay..

  26. He also wrote Arrow's Dead To Rights last year and co-wrote episodes 2.08-2.09 of Arrow this year in addition to the Flash's pilot.

  27. Guess we'll find out at December 4.

  28. I'm glad CW decided to not introduce The Flash in full costume bc if you think bout it. it would ruin the point of the show lol Arrow a skilled archer with no superpowers lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. Agreed. Otherwise it would of ruined Arrow

    ReplyDelete
  30. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy would be very interesting. I don't really know much about comics so I'm not sure on the rest though (was Zatanna in Smallville occasionally?)

    ReplyDelete
  31. If they do Harley Quinn i want Amy Acker for the part and no one else

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great choice 1 more arrow centric ep is great news as is the cw faith in the actor playing him, it all sounds good to me

    ReplyDelete
  33. I only watched the first season of Smallville. didn't see her. On an interesting note - Chloe was such a popular character from the show, they added her to the comics. Same thing happened with Harley Quinn from the original Batman 90's animated series.

Zatanna is a witch. Her father is a famous magician who disappeared. So she sets out to find him. She also has been seen helping a lot of the DC characters with various problems.

  34. See, I told you no meta humans for the foreseeable future on Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I bow to your wisdom in all things Arrow. You promised me a good episode this week even with the Count and I'm holding you to it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. *Sweats nervously* Umm, did I really? Yes, I thought the upcoming episode was great DESPITE The Count and his borderline (let's just be honest, slightly over the top) cartoonish behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Whoa!! never really struck me about so many people. Thanks for the insight!
As said before as long as it's not wonder woman!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah she made a few appearances and was played by the lovely Serinda Swan. It was toward the latter end of the series.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah she was. Season 8 onwards, occasionally.

  40. I like this decision. I only hope that CW will not invest too much in Flash in spite of Arrow... (fearing the lose of audience for Arrow)
