Supernatural 9.08 "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" Review: Have a Little Faith

Nov 29, 2013

This week’s episode of Supernatural “Rock and a Hard Place” was written by Jenny Klein and directed by Johnny MacCarthy who also directed “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo” and who is the first assistant director of even-numbered episodes of the show. Like Kevin Parks, the other first ad on the show, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his directing duties. Klein has also written a number of other episodes, including one of my favorites, “The Curious Case of Dean Winchester.” My first reaction to the episode is that it was another solid monster-of-the-week episode and that Carver is really getting the hang of these after a somewhat uneven start last season. Also – I was SO happy to see the wonderful and super talented Kim Rhodes back on the show! Yes! And more please, show! On reflection, the episode is actually delightfully crafted and carries a number of themes throughout. The title itself is a fun pun on reclaiming one’s virginity, but is also a reflection of where Dean is: trapped between keeping his brother alive and lying to him.

The major theme in the episode is one of faith. Vesta is the virginal, Roman goddess of hearth, home and family. This certainly resonates with the central theme of the show and in particular the episode subtly focuses on the bond between Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki). According to mythology, the sacred fire of Vesta could only be lit by the friction between two pieces of wood – or perhaps two brothers? The fire is also a symbol of home and links earth to Heaven.

Vesta or Bonnie (Lindy Booth) presides over the Good Faith Church. Jody (Kim Rhodes) tells the brothers that her church group in Sioux Falls has been in a tizzy over this new group. At which Dean says “I didn’t peg you as the churchy-type.” Sam follows this up when he asks Jody if she’s “born again.” She says no, but her brushes with Crowley and Bobby’s death left her needing something to believe in and to draw comfort from. She says she understands that he might not get it because of the special bond he shares with Dean. Sam looks puzzled but she says it’s something special. Sam’s reaction is interesting as he looks a little troubled. I wonder if this is an indication that he knows something is up and he’s having trouble putting faith in his brother because he suspects Dean is keeping something from him. Perhaps he’s not drawing the comfort from the relationship that she thinks he is. In fact, it’s clear that Dean has always found his comfort in home and hearth – which is Sam for him – while Sam has struggled on a more independent path. As we know, this has lead to Dean making questionable calls – at least to Sam – in the past.

Susie (Susie Ambromeit) also relies on her faith to help bring her comfort. She asks Dean to pray with her for the missing people and she suggests that they end up in the pit because God is punishing them for failing their vows. Honor reminds her that she needs to have faith that God will help them.

The final scene has Dean appealing to Sam to have faith that they will be able to solve whatever it is that’s wrong with him. It’s interesting that it is Vesta that points out that Sam is virtually dead inside and this reminded me strongly of the scene in “You Can’t Handle the Truth,” in which the goddess Veritas reveals that Sam is soulless. Zeke makes an appearance to stop Dean from telling Sam the truth. Dean is clearly at the breaking point. He’s being tortured by having to lie to Sam, and he is quickly losing faith that Zeke is telling him the truth. I suspect that Dean realizes that the longer he lies to Sam the more he is endangering his relationship with his brother and Sam being able to have faith in him in the future. Dean is also being tortured by what this is doing to Sam. Sam is losing faith in himself. He clearly believes that he may never get better and possible even deserves not to. We definitely seem to be coming to a turning point in this storyline – especially if you’ve seen the scenes for next week!

Aside from the serious story threads, there were a lot of great lighter moments in the episode too. Ackles, as always, nails the comedy when he agrees to become a born again virgin and then in oversharing his thoughts on sex in the group meeting. Padalecki completes the scenes as the consummate straight man. Anybody else love Dean calling Sam, Kato – the Green Hornet’s right hand man (valet)? Anybody else surprised when they signed the purity pledge with their own names?

Dean is sure that he recognizes Susie, which Sam thinks is a line. True to the way their love lives run and that they’ve just revealed in the session, Dean goes home with Susie while Sam is stuck with the poetry writing Tammy. Of course, Dean realizes that he’s recognized Susie from Casa Erotica, the porn series that has appeared countless other times on the show. The role-play between Susie and Dean is hysterical – and did anyone else flash to the tacos in “Mystery Spot” when Dean mentioned that scene with the tacos? Loved that the scene ended with an Ole! On a more serious note, however, the scene is juxtaposed with Sam and Jody’s discussion of where she finds comfort, and I think that is a telling gloss on Dean’s attitude toward sex: he finds comfort in the physical – whether it is sex, food, or the feel of the Impala roaring down the highway.

Finally, a few words about Kim Rhodes. Did I mention the show needs to have her on a lot more – and soon?! Jody Mills is a terrific character and Rhodes plays her quiet courage perfectly. When Dean asks if she’d ready to get back in the fray after she almost died, she responds that these wackadoos just keep on coming – so she’s just going to learn as much as she can to fight them. It’s clear that she’s bonded a little more with Sam – her hug with him is just a little longer. No doubt this is because she and Sam keep having to work together to save Dean and they’ve spent more time alone together. I love the way she just pragmatically wades in and does what needs doing – from punching the virgin in the nose to get her blood to pulling the stake out of her own chest and killing Vesta. Vesta calls Jody a hunter, so I think that is a good indication that we will – and should! – see more of her. I adored her smart-mouthing the goddess. Rhodes also always nails the comedy – “Dragons are a thing?” So, Powers That Be? Let’s have Jody move to Chicago and star in that spin-off you’ve promised us, ok?

Lindy Booth did a wonderful job as Vesta and Bonnie – Bonnie was creepily naive and Vesta her complete opposite – I loved the look on Bonnie’s face when Dean says you can’t unring the virginity bell! Did anybody else think ET when she held her glowing finger up to Jody?

A very enjoyable and generally well-written episode. I had a few quibbles. I didn’t feel the action in the pit was as harrowing as it might have been if we’d been able to bond with the captives a little more – an hour show just isn’t long enough! Having Barb drag her fingers down the wall until they bled seemed a bit gratuitous, until you realize that Neil’s reaction to just turn away from her is a stepping stone to his wanting to offer Honor as a sacrifice. And where did that first aid kit come from? And why is there some sort of tunnel system beneath a barn? Why was Crowley and his blood addiction in the preview? Am I thinking too hard about this stuff?

What did you think of the episode? Have you changed your thoughts on Zeke? How happy were you to see Kim Rhodes back? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

  1. I actually think Sam's reaction to Jodi telling him what he and Dean has is special is because he is already thinking that something is wrong with him and he is letting Dean down again.

On a side-note I thought there was a break from the reviews, glad not because I always enjoy them :)
I love this episode it was so awesome!.
Jody was so badass I hope we see more of her and she's like a mother figure to the boys, we better get her again so she can kick Crowley's butt!.
The interaction between Sam and Jody was really meaningful actually, I think Sam dosen't believe he's special because of his sickness but I'll say it again it was meaningful, so cute. And of course she does well interaction with Dean.
I like the monster of the week storyline it was excellent and the whole 'purifying' thing was hilarious especially when Dean overshared, it was awkward moment for Sam lol. Plus that scene with Dean and the pornstar was funny but somewhat cute.
Sam really needs a good charger for his batteries!. So all was (almost) revealed when Vesta mentioned about him, secret is seriously about to break if Dean not already!. That is torture for Dean to keep the secret that long and Sam must be so mixed emotions like confusion and beginning to see doubt about everything.
I been saying right from the start Zeke has a nasty streak. Its either Zeke playing bad cop with good intentions or he's planning to be the next 'devil'. Maybe in the next episode he uses Sam like he was probably planning all along to combat the angel army then take down Metraton or gain up with?, but its gonna backfire. Because I reckon when he just about to get half-way Sam already gonna know! and Zeke could really kill Sam doing all that even if it is unintentional, Zeke is just a irrational character, evil? its hard to tell but he's not really nice either. He got his benefits like being safe from the angel apocolyspe so far.
So if Zeke have full control of Sam its up to Dean to let Cas in and they haveto think of something to civilised it all or Sam could be the one taking control of Zeke.
So this episode was Awesome can't wait for more! :)

  3. No break from reviews! I'm just a bit behind with some other projects the last two weeks...
I'm not sure how much help Cas can be - or if he'd even sense Zeke with his grace gone - but I'm betting Crowley knows something and that's why he didn't want Sam's blood - can't wait to see this all come to a head! Of course, next week is simply going to leave us with a terrible cliffhanger!

    Sound busy :)
I think Dean will let Cas in with the secret but yes-not much help, but support I would think. It was unusual for Crowley not to have Sam's blood maybe he did sense something, but if it anyone to twist things with the whole Zeke thing it is Crowley and hopefully that is not a massive leverage to him to rise up to the top again.
So next week until the break?, that's awful lol. However can't wait for next week yipee! :D

  5. Super review..as usual and always look forward to them..thanks.

OK MORE Jody, LESS Charlie. At least Sam looks for Dean when she is around. ;) Loved the group "sex talk" and the actions of the ladies when Dean is talking and the Sam/Zeke/Dean talk. Good stuff.

I am very concerned about Zeke, but I have been worried about him the whole time. I am afraid he is not just healing Sam, but taking from his soul also. Cas needed Bobby's soul power to bring Sam and Dean back from the past, I am very worried.

This season has been a winner for me, so far only one ep that I have not liked..of course Charlie was in it. lol

  6. Thanks!

Oh - that would be an interesting twist - I hadn't considered Cas using Bobby's soul to recharge in Frontierland. But he did that so that he could heal quickly - Zeke seems to be taking a very long time. I was most concerned though when Vesta said his liver is still ruined and he's all duct tape and safety pins inside - if Zeke is healing him and is going to be done soon, shouldn't Sam be almost back to normal by now? In fact, I thought he was weaker and more tired now than when Zeke first took over his body. I'm still hoping that Zeke is working for the good guys in some way, but it is getting harder to believe it. Of course, we also know that Cas did a lot of stupid things in his efforts to help...
I think we'll have to agree to disagree about Charlie ;) At least you can find comfort in the fact that Felicia Day is so busy, it's unlikely she'll ever find time for more than one or two episodes a season! Obviously, I'm all for more Jody! I have to say that this is the season I was expecting last year, so I'm really happy Carver seems to have found the balance (and is getting better stand alones from his writers!)

  7. I'm really, really curious about what is going to happen with Crowley. I think the blood addiction is to get a hit of "human" not to increase his powers. But I'm not sure how all that could dovetail back into the plot. Maybe if Crowley has remained on human blood, the trial is really still going - maybe that is why Zeke can't heal Sam!

I agree that Cas could be support. I think that being on his own and alone will give Cas a better appreciation for why Dean doesn't want to be alone.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Literally, just had this thought - what if Zeke can't heal Sam because Crowley shooting up human blood is keeping the trial going? So every time Crowley shoots up, Sam gets weaker? I know it's supposed to be Sam's blood to complete the trial, but this may be enough to keep him weak? Either Zeke is waiting for the trial to finish, or he's working a losing battle to save Sam or doesn't realize why Sam isn't healing?

  9. I don't think Sam is worse now, since he was really dying before Zeke took over, but he is not looking good and I agree if Zeke was really trying to heal him he would be better..but Zeke did say every time Dean has him heal someone it makes him weaker. That is why I was so mad at Dean for healing Charlie and making him stay longer in Sam. I was surprised Dean picked someone over Sam.

I have liked Day in most things she has been in, but don't like the character Charlie. She comes on and the writers make Sam and Dean look stupid. She has to ALWAYS save the day, since the guys just can't work up the muscle or smarts to do it. Ugh.

  10. I had not thought of that, I just thought Crowley thought if Sam's blood was good, then a prophet's blood would be better. This is going to be a long wait till Jan, this next ep looks so good.

I agree with you this season is what I was expecting from Carver last year and last year was a HUGE disappointment to me. Don't know if I will ever rewatch it, I do know they wasted a bonus ep on the DVD with how the worse ep ever of SPN was made. Bitten was bad the first time, did not need to see how this dog was made. lol OK off that soap box.

  11. I think Sam was a lot more tired in this episode than we've seen him - eg Dean finding him asleep in his cereal. Dean's been trying to get him to rest and Sam's been saying he feels fine - and not looking this tired. Maybe that's just Jared half way through the season! LOL!

I like that they don't make Charlie a damsel in distress - and Jody saved them this week... ;)
I was glad that they didn't injure Jody so badly that Zeke had to heal her too - that was getting a little tiresome...

  12. I think this is going to be the most painful hellatus in a long while...

  13. I did not mind Jody saving them, she does not make them look dumb while she is doing it. She is just a hunter doing her job. Charlie is just SO MUCH SMARTER at every thing..computers, hunting, research and she puts them down with snide comments. Just don't like her character.

  14. I only liked 6 episodes last season (and those were for the Sam scenes only)

    Everyone hates Hitler
    Pac Man Fever
    The Great Escapist
    Clip Show
    Sacrifice
    Trial and Error

the rest of the season was pretty boring for me but still better than season 7 in which nothing happened and season 6 which was pointless and soapy even though Soulless Sam was sexy.

This season has a better story line in Zeke/Sam but its been pretty slow developing, theres potential in the Crowley/Abaddon battle for power, theres something interesting going on with Crowley and blood, angel factions but so far its all been a bit too erratic and I have to say a bit boring for me.

  15. I didn't say he was intentionally staying in a vessel he couldn't heal. He may simply be keeping Sam alive so that Sam IS alive to give Crowley the final dose to complete the trial - maybe he is hoping he can make Sam strong enough to survive it. Of course he isn't going to tell Dean he is doing anything other than healing Sam. Dean would make him get out immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't think curing Crowley now is going to change anything, that 'red bright juice' in Sam was the essence of the trials, and it's gone now. In fact after we found out about Metatron's plan, and what he told Cas that 'it wasn't about the trials, it was about the spells', I'm not even sure that completing it would close the hell gate permanently. So I guess Dean did a good job stopping Sam, he could be dead for nothing for all we know.

My guess is Zeke has been healing himself first, in his list of priority Sam's body is next. So for explaining how Sam is practically dead this episode and apparently jumps to health in upcoming episodes, Zeke is fully healed now and is going to put his full power in healing Sam. .... but still it doesn't make sense that Sam was 'running' and laughing at Dean's worry a few episodes before and now he's tired!!!!
But you know what, I won't put much thought in these writers' works, they tend to stuff illogical and strange plot twists in the show to just raise the drama. -_-

I think at the moment Crowley is just screwed and he knows it, better not let their guard down because when Crowley sees a opportunity he's gone and probably step down from hell and maybe team up with the angels?. But if he really half-full with that blood still like you said that trial could still be lurking..and that he could help out the boys more.
Great what you said about Cas and hope they wuickly get it together and solve their problems out :)

I would expect to be alot of clashing!. I think Cas will also be angry but sad actually for what going on with Sam. If anything to be angry about he would direct it at Zeke for being unethical.

  19. Much to like here--in your review, I mean. I agree it was a solid episode, but I too had some quibbles. You mentioned one--Dean and Sam use their own names when they sign the pledges? Really? Here's another: if you've taken a new name an dleft your porn star identity behind, why do you have copies of your porn DVDs in the top drawer of your dresser?
Big YES on MORE JODIE MILLS! I loved that she got to ace Vesta, though Vesta herself, I must confess, did not do much for me. As a rule, I find the classical gods just don't work too well for me on the show. Can't really put my finger on why; they just seem an awkward fit. But at least there weren't any dragons--just the reminder of that episode (one of their worst, in my opinion) was enough.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I loved the dragon ep, Dean trying to pull the sword out of the rock was classic, that one scene made the ep for me. lol

    ReplyDelete
  21. Different strokes, I guess. That was for me the worst thing in an overall bad episode....

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would have appreciated if they had been able to "fix" the travesty that the "dragons" were. So disappointing - in a very disappointing episode as you say - Like a Virgin - not this one!
