BBC One’s much praised, multi-award-winning drama Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, returns for an eagerly awaited third series of three, 90-minute films – The Empty Hearse, The Sign Of Three and His Last Vow.

The contemporary re-imagining of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, has caused a sensation since it first aired in the summer of 2010, the last series delivering an audience of more than 10 million viewers who have tuned in to watch Sherlock and John Watson navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers in three thrilling, action-packed adventures.

In episode one of this new series, two years after the devastating effects of The Reichenbach Fall, Dr John Watson has got on with his life. New horizons, romance and a comforting domestic future beckon. But, with London under threat of a huge terrorist attack, Sherlock Holmes is about to rise from the grave with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. It’s what his best friend wanted more than anything, but for John Watson it might well be a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’! If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it though, he’s in for a very big surprise…

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Sherlock Holmes, with Martin Freeman as John Watson, Mark Gatiss as Mycroft, Rupert Graves as Inspector Lestrade, Una Stubbs as Mrs Hudson, Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan and Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper.

  1. "Sherlock Holmes is about to rise from the grave with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him"
That's what I wanted to hear!

  7. Get ready for pissed of Watson!

  8. I want Watson to be pissed off! Sherlock deserves a punch for what he put him through and I like the idea of things not going back to the way they were, because John has moved on after 2 years.

  9. Same really hope he punches him first then has a breakdown later in the episode (I love emotional Martin Freeman). Their friendship can't just be okay again immediately.

  10. BBC never announce their dates too far ahead, in fact British TV tends not to as a rule but I imagine the first episode will get a Christmas premiere maybe boxing day (26th Dec)

  11. Well, in canon it was three years...and the hiatus was even longer....so I guess we an John are lucky...

  12. But the slowly narrowing down is becoming ridiculous...it is really so difficult to give us an airdate? "Christmas program" is still a timeframe of a week or so....

  13. Well, as long as he doesn't faint, we're fine. ;) I'm also hoping he punches him first, then has a breakdown (Freeman does emotional so well) and I hope Mary is awesome and John/Mary are a great couple, and she's not just an obstacle in the way of John-Sherlock being the way they were.

  14. There is always great competition with other channels, esp ITV their main rival, so transmission dates are usually kept very secret until a couple of weeks beforehand.

  15. I have a feeling about the 29th/30th, Sunday/Monday are generally a better day for TX than midweek for a show like this historically.

  16. well, at least now BBC announced that they would announce the Christmas program on the fourth of December....
thanks for the explanation...I was really wondering what the point of all this pussyfooting is.

  17. Is the 29th still considered Christmas program? And who says that they will pick the Sunday again? I guess they can show Sherlock whenever they want, and unless people are busy with Christmas commitments, they will be glued at the TV (and the computer), no matter what is on elsewhere.

  18. The Christmas period is the two weeks over Xmas itself and the New Year, If you check the bottom of the Introduction page in the source link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/mediapacks/xmas13/) it confirms that it covers weeks 52 and 53.
Boxing Day isn't a great day for viewing figures in the UK, people watch the festive films as they family over or are TV'd out after the soaps/Doctor Who/film premieres bombardment on Xmas Day is the usual excuse handed out. But they also have to bear in mind that the other 2 episodes will also air on the same days the following weeks, and that they are 90 minutes long. Sunday or Monday (in the Ripper Street slot once it's finished) would be my guess, most likely the Sunday as they can use Strictly as a lead in :)

  21. YES! So, two years have passed? (on the show, to me in real life feels longer since series 2 :P)
