The fourth episode of Reign, “Hearts and Minds,” was written by P.K. Simonds and directed by Scott Peters. Among others Simonds wrote several episode of Ghost Whisperer and Peters is known for directed Burn Notice and one episode of the first season of Beauty and the Beast.
This is my first review for Reign and I will not analyse the whole episode in deep but let me begin by telling you that I usually don’t watch historical series. They are not in my range of interest. I usually watch Sci-Fi and Cops shows and a couple of Drama. I decided to try this show because I liked Adelaide in Teen Wolfe and was intrigued by the Promos.
The plot surrounding this episode was Mary engagement to Thomas the illegitimate son of the king of Portugal. I decided after the first episode not to care about the historical inaccuracy of the show and focus on the plots and relationships between characters. I’m glad I did because I’m enjoying the show more and more and even if I’m sometime still bothered by the music or the costumes my interest is grown fonder.
I would like them to develop more the relationship between the brothers (Francis and Bash) I loved their interactions so far and I probably would enjoy to see more of them. I was pleased to see them working together to neutralise Thomas and saving each other lives. The triangle between them and Mary could jeopardise their bond and love for each other. I hope it would not destroy it.
Thomas was revealed to be a really displeasing person who might have murdered his first wife. The way he treated Mary, like she was his property, touched a sensible cord in me and made me glad I’m living in the 21st century.
I would have been happier if they let us see at least a shadow of Clarisse but I’m glad they still playing the mystery card which is the most intriguing part of the show. Who is she really and why is she helping Mary against the queen’s shenanigans?

i really liked the episode, but the last scene totally creeped me out.
ReplyDeleteI too was creeped out. when they started panning to under the bed I knew Clarisse was going to be under there but I still got chills.
ReplyDeleteI must say, I was not going to watch this show when I first saw the promos but now it's a series recording on my DVR. I am loving it. Last night was probably my favorite episode so far. I too had to set history aside and just go with the inaccuracies. The music and costumes don't bother me as much because I love the updated retro fashion and I think the music they are choosing is fitting to the scenes at hand. What I loved most about last night was how they took "historical facts" and made them the fiction; like when she was telling him that Europe believes him to be sickly and growth stunted when he clearly is not. That put that historical fact to rest to make it fit the show. As long as Reign keeps up this pace, it will have a fan in me.
