The Denver Broncos at the New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” led NBC to another easy overnight victory, with an estimated 17.0 rating/28 share from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. But ABC was no slouch care of “The 2013 American Music Awards” at an 8.2/12 in the overnights from 8-11 p.m. Comparably, that outdelived the year-ago telecast (6.6/10 on 11/18/12) by 24 percent. And last year’s telecast translated into 9.52 million viewers and a 3.4 rating/8 share among adults 18-49, according to the live plus same day data. Expect a demo rating in the low-4 range.
At 7 p.m. on ABC was veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” at a distant third-place 3.5/ 6 at 7 p.m., which was down by eight percent from the year-ago evening. And pre-game “Football Night in America” scored a 1.9/ 3 at 7 p.m. (#4), a 3.7/ 6 at 7:30 p.m. (#4) and a first-place 10.3/16 at 8 p.m.
Elsewhere, Fox got a considerable boost care of the NFL primetime overrun at a 17.3/28 (#1) in the 7 p.m. half-hour. That led into a dominant 14.4/23 for “The OT” at 7:30 p.m., followed by the animated rotation of “The Simpsons” (#4: 4.7/ 7), “Bob’s Burgers” (#4: 2.9/ 4), “Family Guy” (#4: 3.2/ 5) and “American Dad” (#4: 2.5/ 4). As a reminder, “American Dad” moves to TBS in originals next season.
CBS, meanwhile, was on par with recent levels (despite the increased competition) with its rotation of granddaddy “60 Minutes” (#2: 8.0/13), “The Amazing Race” (#3: 5.5/ 8), “The Good Wife” (#3: 6.8/10) and “The Mentalist” (#3: 7.2/12).

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the
Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the
Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Quite a boring day ratings wise. The only horse I have in the race today is The Good Wife and I never expect much of its ratings anyway. Curious to see if the mentalist spikes I guess.

ReplyDelete1.5 for what should be one of the most pivotal episodes of the series is bad news. That's just 75% of CBS drama average and if this is a spike, it means it will settle even lower. I don't want to ruin your happiness or anything but you should moderate your expectations. The show is likely to be cancelled.

ReplyDeletethis episode was LEAKED several days before and also some major spoilers were posted by CBS, we were also facing AMA and Football, but we still INCREASED by 0.1% on the rating.
you only know the numbers, but you really have no idea what The Mentalist has been gone through all these days.
It was only up a tenth from last week, and this isn't even the season high.
ReplyDeleteHonestly: I'm a MAJOR fan of The Mentalist, the show is a HUGE part of my life, and I HATE to most likely see it go after this season- but I actually WELCOME if somebody tells me the truth in a friendly and factual way, because the worst thing would be to hope all season and then be crushed in May. I really don't want to lose The Mentalist, and I fully expect to spend the next summer crying. But for me, it doesn't make sense to celebrate ratings which simply aren't good, and entertain a hope that, sorry.... seems out of proportion. Sure, it's not good to lose hope altogether, but as I said... I like to face the FACTS. I'm welcoming your comments, because you clearly know what you're talking about (much, much better than I do), and write in a respectful, friendly way. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for that comment. You seem to very realistic and respectful, so you have my entire respect. I don't think people should loose hope either, I also have quite a few shows in trouble, but I think it's important to be realistic and prepared than to have your hopes up for nothing, like you've explained. I never intended to rub it on anyone's faces that ratings weren't good, I was simply stating, with facts, that they weren't. I think your fandom has been through hell with the timeslot CBS has given your show when it was performing so decently on a weekday and I wouldn't like to be in your shoes, but it's just the way things go and being realistic (yet hopeful) about it is the best approach to have. Being in denial and attacking me for saying facts doesn't help matters. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteErm, online leaking IS likely to have somewhat major effects on the viewing count... People won't tune in if they've already seen the episode, that's common sense.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's common sense, but the amount of US people who watch the leaked episode online and that would otherwise watch the episode live+SD but don't is very tiny. Networks have been releasing premiere episodes for ages now. Do you suppose they intentionally hurt themselves by doing so? Of course the effect is not beneficial but it's statistically irrelevant. Here are the facts:
ReplyDelete- a 0.1 rating corresponds roughly to 126.960 people
- if you go the torrent websites, and I actually bothered to, you find numbers close to 15.000 at best. Maybe you can find more. But anyway, let's assume there are around 5 big torrent websites with numbers like this (this is already a big exaggeration on my part). This would be roughly 75.000 people.
- Out of all this, you have to take out all those that are: A) older than 49, B) not live in the US, C) would not watch the episode live anyway, D) only downloaded the episode today like they do all the time because they didn't even know it was leaked. It is not unfeasible at all that this number would be cut in half!
At best, you're looking at loosing lose to half a tenth of a ratings point? And this is vastly exaggerated already! Like I said, 100% irrelevant in statistical terms...
Only the real die-hard fans would go as far as looking up the episode on the internet, and this group isn't large enough to make a considerable dent in the ratings. Most members of the audience just tune in on Sunday, and don't really get all the background stuff on the web. I bet the brunt of the 10 million people never realized the episode had been leaked. It's like, say, Elementary for me: I watch the show every week, but I'm not on ANY fan sites, so if something like a leakage happened, I would never realize.

ReplyDeleteNote: In a number of markets (including Miami, Tampa, and the entire states of Tennessee, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota), CBS prime programming was delayed by either 10 or 17 minutes. Ratings for CBS are tentative and subject to change.
ReplyDeleteThe episode leak should have minimal effect. I doubt so many people watched it to majorly effect the ratings.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I don't remind people everytime I read the rating news. @Pierre was seemingly celebrating the number like it was some big accomplishment and I was simply stating that 75% is still a very poor ratings level. I realize that the increased competition on Sundays sucks but that doesn't mean the number is still good. 0.1-0.2 variations are statistically irrelevant which means the episode was basically even. For such a pivotal episode, that's not good. As for the online leakage, it is unlikely to have major effects on the ratings. Also, I don't need to watch a show or know what's going on with it to comment on the ratings. The numbers are what they are.
