Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

Metered Market Wednesday Ratings
Clean Sweep for CBS; Disappointing Freshman Entries

Wednesday 11/20/13

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.9/12
ABC 4.7/ 8
Fox 4.2/ 7
NBC 3.9/ 7
CW 1.7/ 3

———-

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 11/21/12:
ABC and CW: +31 each, NBC: +18, CBS: + 6, Fox: -14

———-

-Winners:
“Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (CBS), “The Middle (ABC), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “CSI” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Back in the Game” (ABC), “Super Fun Night” (ABC), “The Tomorrow People” (CW), “Dateline” (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy overnight Wednesday victory for CBS with a first-place finish in each half-hour care of “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (6.2 rating/10 share), “Criminal Minds” (7.6/12) and granddaddy “CSI” (6.9/12), which looks like a safe bet to return in 2014-15. Comparably, CBS bested the No. 2 network, ABC, by 47 percent. But ABC is home to the top-rated series of the night among adults 18-49 (and other key young demos), “Modern Family,” which finished second in the 9 p.m. half-hour in the overnights with a 6.9/11.

Considering there are only four episodes of the season left for this edition of “Survivor” (it concludes on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 8-10 p.m.), seven active contestants and three at Exile Island are quite a bit. Expect a few double eviction installments.

ABC has already canceled sitcom “Back in the Game” (#4: 4.1/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.), which dipped from the Thanksgiving-themed episode of lead-in “The Middle” (#2: 5.8/10 at 8 p.m.) by 29 percent. But equally worthy to face the chopping block is “Super Fun Night,” which slipped to fourth at 9:30 p.m. with a 3.6/ 6. Comparably, retention for “Super Fun Night” out of “Modern Family” was a not-so-super 52 percent.

Sophomore “Nashville” capped off the night for ABC with a second-place 4.0/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was one-tenth of a rating point above the 3.9/ 7 one week earlier.

Over at NBC, the fall season-finales of dramas “Revolution” (4: 3.7/ 6) and veteran “Law & Order: SVU” (#3: 4.5/ 7) were on par with one week earlier. “Revolution” increased from failed year-ago sitcoms “Whitney” (#4: 2.7/ 5) and “Guys With Kids” (#4: 2.5/ 4) by 48 percent, while “SVU” grew by 18 percent from the 3.8/ 6 on the year-ago evening. At 10 p.m., “Dateline” on NBC finished third with a 3.6/ 6.

Elsewhere, fading “The X Factor” on Fox scored a 4.2/ 7 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was 14 percent below the 4.9/ 8 one year earlier. And recent entry “The Tomorrow People” on The CW scored a disappointing 1.3/ 2 from 9-10 p.m. (#5), which was 38 percent below reliable lead-in “Arrow” (2.1/ 3 at 8 p.m.).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

  1. My three Wednesday favorites (Revolution, Arrow and The Tomorrow People) look stable from whatever this is worth. I hope none of them falls, especially Revolution and The Tomorrow People.

  2. Tomorrow People actually did better than last week.

  3. I don't dare to extrapolate such thing from the overnights from such a minimal difference, especially for a CW show. I hope you're right though.

  4. Those are my three Wednesday three also. Although TPP is listed as a loser those numbers are hardly 'loser' for CW ratings. And hopefully now that they've started the arc with Stephen's father it'll pick up pace.

  5. Very good for CSI !

  6. For now im happy that The Tomorrow People is stable. I will wait until January and if The 100 will be better, than i will hope for TTP to decrease. Its hard to choose what shows on CW i want to be renewed, because actually they have great shows this year

  7. Yeah, I don't think it will rise in demo, but those ratings aren't bad. I think Berman just needs a show to pick on.

  8. I ignore Berman 100% in his comments. I don't think TTP's ratings are good though, not if it loses 50% of the most compatible lead-in it could have, in the fall, and is on pair with Reign. Remember also that it will face the strongest hour of AI come spring every week. The show may not be what it used to be but I am fairly certain it's no X-Factor either. TTP should get itself some buffer and it currently has none.

  9. I actually agree with that. I want both The 100 and TTP renewed from their new crop of shows. I am also willing to give a try to Star-Crosses but I have little hopes for that one.

  10. I wonder if The X Factor got at least a 2.0 since Marc didn't put it as a 'loser' and it only declined 14%.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't think it's very likely that it inched all the way up the a 2.0 when it did a 1.7 last week, but it's possible.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Does anyone know when does CW usually release its spring program? Im really curious to see where will the put T100 & SC

    ReplyDelete
  13. i will watch them both too, but The 100 looks so much better, but who knows, i mean TTP looke much better than Reign and now i like Reign much much more than TTP

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm just surprised that it's not in the 'losers' section.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I disregard his classification, I find it 100% random or based on useless criterion

    ReplyDelete
  16. Me too and I have also been wondering about that. I don't think there is any specific date for networks to do so though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. hasnt X Factor been getting around a 1.5 for the past few weeks now?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I tend to not believe that there really is a large number of people that decide not to watch a certain episode because of a specific storyline/promo. It just seems very abnormal to me. IMO, I am more prone to believe that we got a very high 0.9 this week (0.93 or something) and a low 1.2 last week (like 1.17 which is actually likely considering it only upticked in finals) and that, as such, the drop is not as large as it looks (I also think margin of error plays a role here). I personally think these are more plausible then people just deciding to not watch episode X of a show, but I have no way to prove it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I fear the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Arrow (1.0), X Factor(1.7), Survivor(2.5), The Middle(2.3), Modern Family (3.4) were adjusted up in the finals.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I really love TTP so I hope it stays stable or better racing up again
