Metered Market Wednesday Ratings
CBS Wins; “The X Factor” on Fox Slips Considerably

Wednesday 11/13/13

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.7/11
ABC 4.9/ 8
Fox 4.3/ 7
NBC 3.9/ 7
CW 1.7/ 3

———-

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 11/14/12:
NBC: + 3, CBS: – 4, ABC: – 9, CW: -23, Fox: -28

———-

-Winners:
“Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (CBS), “The Middle” (ABC), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “CSI” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The X Factor” (Fox), “Back in the Game” (ABC), “Super Fun Night” (ABC), “The Tomorrow People” (CW), “Nashville” (ABC), “Dateline” (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy midweek overnight victory for CBS, which bested second-place ABC by 37 percent. Addictive “Survivor: Blood vs. Water,” which featured a double departure to Exile Island, opened the evening with a dominant 6.2 rating/10 share at 8 p.m. Next was “Criminal Minds” at also first-place 7.3/12 from 9-10 p.m., followed by granddaddy “CSI” at a winning 6.6/10 at 10 p.m. Given other issues to address, there is every reason to believe Wednesday on CBS next season will remain intact (assuming new deals are signed with the casts of “Criminal Minds” and “CSI”).

As for “Survivor,” am I the only one who finds Tyson one of the least likeable competitors in the history of the franchise?

Over at ABC, freshman sitcom “Back in the Game” earned its cancellation stripes with a third-place 4.2/ 7 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m., which was 30 percent below always reliable lead-in “The Middle” (#2: 6.0/10 at 8 p.m.). One year earlier, “The Neighbors” at 8:30 p.m. was a stronger option at a 4.6/ 7 (out of a 5.9/ 9 for “The Middle” on 11/14/12).

“Modern Family” on ABC perked up to a 7.3/12 (#1t) in the 9 p.m. half-hour, which should be enough to lead the evening in adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos). But inane “Super Fun Night” slipped to a fourth-place 3.9/ 6 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, “Super Fun Night” was 22 percent below year-ago time period occupant “Suburgatory” (5.0/ 8 on 11/14/12), with overnight retention of just 53 percent out of “Modern Family.” ABC may want to rethink those four additional episodes ordered.

Sophomore “Nashville” on ABC capped off the night with a second-place 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was 11 percent below the 4.4/ 8 in the overnights one year earlier.

Over at NBC, relocated “Revolution” finished fourth with a 3.5/ 6 at 8 p.m., which was 17 percent above failed year-ago sitcoms “Whitney” (3.1/ 5 on 11/14/12) and “Guys With Kids” (2.9/ 5), and consistent with last week. Next was tired “Law & Order: SVU” at a distant third-place 4.4/ 7 from 9-10 p.m., which was equal to one year earlier, followed by a 10 p.m. edition of “Dateline” at a third-place 3.7/ 7. One year earlier, former Wednesday 10 p.m. time period occupant “Chicago Fire” scored a 4.2/ 7 in the overnights.

Elsewhere, three year old “The X Factor” on Fox remained on the double-digit downside with a 4.3/ 7 from 8-10 p.m. off by 28 percent from the 6.0/ 9 one year earlier. Yes, Fox will have to consider life without Simon Cowell next fall. And recently introduced drama “The Tomorrow People” on The CW did not earn its full season renewal stripes with a 1.2/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. (#5) out of a 2.1/ 3 (#5) for “Arrow” at 8 p.m. Comparably, “The Tomorrow People” was 20 percent below year-ago occupant “Supernatural” (1.5/ 2 on 11/14/12), with retention out of “Arrow” of just 57 percent. Of the three new CW dramas, “Vampire Diaries” spin-off “The Originals” is the standout.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. 1. That rating probably means The X Factor still got at least a 2.0. Darn. Sorry, I know that's mean.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Well, the overnights for Arrow, The Tomorrow People and Revolution are exactly the same as from a week ago, so nothing I can extrapolate from there.

    ReplyDelete
  3. If that's the case then Revolution is EXTREMELY steady!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Well, first we need to really see the 18-49s to see if it's still steady (hopefully it is steady or up). As far as renewal go, I think it will depend on its spring ratings. I think there are too many variables right now. Depends on whether or not Chicago PD makes it and on whether or not NBC sticks with TBL during fall next year. My belief is that it will come down to a battle between Revolution and Parenthood and I am not ready to guess on a winner of that battle yet.

    ReplyDelete
  5. You really hate the x-factor ahah

    ReplyDelete
  6. So what? You now want the X Factor to do badly this way when Bones doesn't hit 2.0 you can then bitch that they shouldn't have moved Bones to Friday when the X-factor isn't doing well?

This is what i get from your comments posted here.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Not as much as it look like. I just think it shouldn't still take up a whole night or three hours of the schedule when it's doing badly.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Further begs the question to the three pickups 'why?'

    ReplyDelete
  9. I made an edit before your answer but I think you didn't see it, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm loving The Originals (Supernatural still my top favourite, tho). And I agree re Tyson. I want Hayden to win it all.

    ReplyDelete
  11. None of the three shows is doing badly enough that it is worth betting on the chances of the midseason replacements doing significantly better. Let's say they didn't order more TTP and replaced it with The 100. Imagine the 100 would do like a 0.8 (which is FAR from given). They would have The 100' 0.8 on Wednesdays + 0.3 Beauty and the Beast on Mondays = 1.1. Now assume they keep TTP at its 0.6 level + The 100 on Mondays, which let's say, does 0.3 less sans Arrow, so a 0.5. That 's still =1.1. Even if you add or take a couple of ticks, there's simply no point in messing it up.

    ReplyDelete
  12. No, I didn't. Sorry. And I'm a little confused about what your saying with Glee. Isn't AI's result show only 30 minutes and Rake following it? Or is Rake an hour? I know something is going after AI and before Glee.

    ReplyDelete
  13. First of all, I could have said it differently to not automatically make you assume I was saying that because of Bones. That wasn't my intention, so that's my bad.

I just think Fox needs to stop worrying so much about fixing Mondays when it's doing fine and start trying to fix Tuesday-Thursday, more so as least one hour of Tuesday, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  14. No problem, I should have answered instead of editting. Anyway, here is what FOX's midseason Thursdays will look like (I make some assumptions here because I don't know the exact dates for each thing).

    January:
    American Idol
    Rake

February (I am not sure they are actually letting Rake air against the olympics though)

    American Idol
    Rake

    March
    American Idol
    Surviving Jack
    Rake

    April
    American Idol
    Surviving Jack
Rake/Glee (depends on whether or not Rake airs in February, I think it has to or else there is no place to air Glee)

    May
    American Idol
    Glee

    June
    Gordon Ramsey Show (??)
    Glee

    ReplyDelete
  15. No problem. And I am not sure on these dates, it's just speculation. I am pretty sure the sequence will be American Idol+Rake, American Idol+Surviving Jack+Rake, American Idol+Rake, American Idol+Glee, but I am not sure on how long each sequence lasts. That's why it was always impossible to move Bones to Fridays. They would have to put it there now, air it for one month, take it out of the air for 3 months and then have it come back in April/May and run probably a third of the season into the summer. In the meantime, they would have to reallocate Glee to Fridays where it would do most likely terrible numbers given its young skewing audience.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And by the way, that's why it was also impossible to send Almost Human to Thursdays, because Rake is already going there.

  18. Yes, I think Revolution can get a renewal according to these steady ratings but spring ratings are very important so everything can change...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yay for Arrow going up and I am glad Revolution is still stable (I wish it would go up but it's better than going down). Its steadiness is remarkable. But the problem is The Tomorrow People. The show is now loosing almost half of the arrow's lead-in. I don't understand what's going on, I wish it would go up already.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Arrow - 2.99 is that a viewership high this seasons?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Only show that really matters is Survivor

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nice 1.1 Arrow....deserve it but cmon again 0.6 for TTP...this show is awesome

    ReplyDelete
  23. no second episode got 3.06

    ReplyDelete
  24. You can check in the Ratings Database www.stvplus.com

    ReplyDelete
  25. I recently finished watching the latest episodes of TTP and it has gotten so much better. It and Reign deserve better ratings than .6

    ReplyDelete
  26. Glad Revolution is steady. Please get renewed!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Its stability is certainly impressive. If only it could uptick a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It is indeed. Seems the show has FINALLY found its footing. How often have NBC had such a stable performer Wednesdays at 8:00?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think stability is a bit overrated as far as renewals go but it certainly doesn't hurt. If Revolution was this stable 0.2/0.3 tents higher than it is, I would predict its renewal. As it is, I still find it too bubble unfortunately. Its ratings are basically the same as fellow bubble show Parenthood and Parenthood has a tougher situation schedule wise for whatever that is worth. It's too close to call.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If someone told me at the start of the year that the CW would have four shows that could hit 1.1, I would have laughed at them. Very pleased with their ratings at the moment (besides Mondays and Fridays of course).

    ReplyDelete
  31. tvbythenumbers says Nashville is a 1.5 ....which one is correct?

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1.5. We had a typo earlier that we fixed. If you refresh you should see it displayed correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Arrow marked 1.1, great, returned to score the numbers of the season 1.
Arrow is my favorite series along with TVD, The Originals and
Supernatural and all are doing very well. This is incredible! Happy!

    ReplyDelete
  34. And they can fix Mondays too next year with the spin-offs for Arrow and SPN.

    ReplyDelete
  35. No and it would most likely end above 3m this week too in the finales.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't believe Fox is trying to 'fix' Mondays,i think they are trying to build a solid night of viewing.

I honestly haven't the foggiest when it come to the X Factor,i don't watch it and i haven't kept up with the ratings for it. But,this week they did better. Much more goes into keeping a show where it is,moving it to cancelling it.More than just their rating at this point.
Oh,btw i just re-read what i wrote to you and to me it came off as being cranky.Sorry, that was not my intent.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh,well at least Revolution stayed stable these last couple of weeks...YaY!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great night, almost everything is up.
Really glad that Arrow rose. And I am contented that TTP didn't fall, at least. Though I really hope it rises soon.
Surprised that BITG rose, I thought it would fall after the cancellation.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Fantastic numbers for Arrow. Hopefully it keeps thaf 1.1 in the finals.

Looks like The Tomorrow People has stabilized which is a good thing. Still would like to see higher ratings, though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yay for Arrow jumping! While this episode wasn't as strong as the last two, in my opinion, this season is definitely kicking ass, so it's well-deserved.

TTP, however, continues to worry me. It's like a battle between this show and Reign, who will blink - read: drop below 0.6 - first. Insofar as shows are expected to hold onto their lead-in's audience, it looks particularly bad in light of Arrow's performance this week: TTP lost almost half of its audience. :(

    ReplyDelete
  41. The Amell cousins should join forces and do cross-promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah, it always comes down to "better the devil you know". Reign and TTP aren't doing so hot, but who knows if The 100 and/or Star-Crossed aren't going to be Cult-level fiascoes? I don't expect them to be, but a back 9 order to shows that are getting more-or-less steady (if disappointing) ratings is less risky than betting it all on new shows which are still an unknown quantity. This way, they keep their options open.

With all of my criticism of The CW for some of their moves in the last few years, I think other networks could learn from them in terms of not being so trigger-happy (although that's probably got more to do with a lack of backup options than patience/leniency with an underperforming show). Unless a show is a disaster right off the gate, like Emily Owens, I think it's worth giving it a second lease on life and trying to figure out a way to boost its performance.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Agreed on both counts. Maybe Stephen Amell should do a PSA in the end of Arrow: "You guys HAVE to start watching The Tomorrow People, or my cousin Robbie will be out of a job! C'mon!"

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nothing against Nashville, but as a Revenge fan, I have to say this is a major downer. :(

    ReplyDelete
  45. many of the viewers probably either don't know it's cancelled as they don't follow websites such as this and/or they just think it was supposed to be only 13 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I completely get what your saying about them wanting to build a solid night. :) But compared to Tuesday-Thursday, Monday already is a solid night. Yes, the comedies have stabilized and The X Factor went up this week, but they are no where as solid as the shows on Monday, IMO. Does that make sense? I don't know. I just don't get Fox's way of thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes, it's exactly about the devil you know. However, I don't like that kind of generalization in terms of giving shows a second lease of life. For instance, I think ABC was totally right in cancelling something like Back in the Game, which had no bus and no real shown growth potential (I can't believe I am actually saying something nice about an ABC move). It depends. Here, the point is that there is one another place where the new shows can go and that is Monday (or some combination of Monday/Thursday). If the network was doing as hot on Mondays as it is on Tuesdays, I think at least one of TTP and Reign wouldn't have gotten a backorder.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree, it is very sad about TTP. It's really annoying why it won't go up. Hopefully some of the audience that left early gets caught up in the christmas break and comes back afterwards? I hope the cw reruns it during christmas and promotes it more.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I actually found out that Revolution did a 1.44 last week which is literally as close of going up as you get. Fingers crossed it adjusts up.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Someone around here hates CrimTv, why are you always downvoting her? How rude!

Anyway, I agree with you, the general public don't know that stuff. Besides, I hardly think when a show moves up a tenth that can be considered a rise. Between rounding error and margin of error, it is impossible to know for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I found out last week it was at 1.44 which is as close as it gets from adjusting up. The half hours were the same as this week, so hopefully we have better luck this week and see an upwards adjustment? :P Lets hope!

    ReplyDelete
  52. True, the show you know already is better than the one you have yet to premiere. As with TTP they also enjoy the benefit of TheCW not really having another show in their schedule to properly replace it with. The100 isn't a superhero show.
As for Reign, you know I'm biased, but I would've replaced it with Star Crossed in a heartbeat. Because a.) it features actors know by CW/TVD audiences and b.) is genre wise closer to TVD than Reign

    ReplyDelete
  53. Very very minimal impact. I think Nashville is leaning towards renewal but I still think Revenge will get renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hopefully, more people get caught up in it!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes. I actually don't know why they don't promote them together more. That whole Amell relationship should be way more promoted! I also think it would help if TTP would give up on the triangle, I don't think the arrow audience likes that.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I've been saying that for weeks too! Such a wasted opportunity!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, for starers you do realize that you don't need a superhero show to follow Arrow right? I mean, I just told you that I was all in favour of them keeping TTP there, but they could perfectly air The 100 there too. As for Reign, actors being familiar and genres being familar mean zero.TSC had the same genre as TVD and failed. Beauty and the Beast has the same genre of Star Crossed and failed behind TVD. So, not valid arguments there.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I am really impressed with Arrow performance rating wise. It actually won the time slot in the M18-34 demo. Seems Arrow is becoming a very important player for CW.

Here are some data from CWs press release:

Last night’s Arrow hit a bull’s-eye, matching its series high in A18-34 (1.1/4), its highest rating in that demo since last November.
Arrow also matched its season high in A18-49 (1.1/3), and had its second-most watched episode of the season (2.99M).
    Arrow gained +22% week to week in A18-34, +56% in M18-34, +10% in A18-49, +27% in M18-49 and +7% in total viewers.
Arrow also hit a series high in young men, with its highest rating ever in M18-34 (1.4/5), and ranking number one in the time period. It was The CW’s best performance in the time period in M18-34 in five years (Oct. 2008).

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeah, but if Revenge doesn't stop falling, it's gonna be hard to stick to the "ABC will definitely renew Revenge because they have tons of worse-performing shows" argument. (Although there IS the syndication factor.)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't know why Nashville is a loser but not Revolution when they pretty much got the same thing. I watch both show, btw. Not bashing or anything.
