I loved the styling of the episode because it gave the show a more grownup feel, however the actually storyline I wasn't a fan of. In my opinion it was one of the worst episodes because it focused only on callie. I watch the show for the original cast Meredith, Christina, Alex.
One reason I dislike character-centric episodes is that little-to-no screen-time for other much-loved characters. There was a fair amount of Cristina in the episode, and Meredith appeared a few times but Alex only had a line or two. Same with Bailey, Shane, Stephanie, Leah, Owen, April, Jackson, Richard and Derek. I do agree that the show works best when it works as an ensemble.
It's usually only maybe once or twice a season Shonda does a character centric episode and it is an ensemble show so what goes around comes around. I loved the episode because I'm a Calzona fan but I am also a big Alex fan and would love a episode centered on him when his dad comes back into the frame. The good thing about these types of episodes is you get a lot of insight all at once rather than bits and pieces over a number of weeks. I think this storyline needed this type of episode for that reason.
I know right! It doesn't even look the same. When was the last time we saw Joe? S7 w/ Cristina bartending? The actor was on a recent episode of Scandal as a medical examiner. I don't understand why they got rid of him on Grey's. He was such a vital part of the show in the early seasons.
Funnily enough I am the opposite. I wish they did more of them. Not maybe all quite THAT character centric but it would be nice to have an Alex heavy episode then a Derek heavy etc etc. Otherwise they are all just fighting for 2 minutes screen time per episode.
Private Practice did it wonderfully in its final season to wrap up each characters final story. Its a good idea, but I like how Grey's does theirs sporadically and only a few times each season. Back in season 1-4 character centric episodes wouldn't have worked because of the smaller cast (and the amount of surgeons on one case was at least 3) there were 3-4 stories being told at a time. Now, with a larger cast and more complicated story lines it is refreshing once in a while to step back and focus on 1 story instead of 52 (exaggerated guess).
I completely agree with you. Maybe if they did three to four of these types of episodes a season, I think it would really help with the character development and as an audience we'd get more of an insight to their lives. Callie/Meredith are my favourites, so obviously I enjoyed this episode, but would be good to see the others have an episode like this - not sure how it would work though seeing as Callie's was due to the malpractice suit.
I think that's because the show has too many characters to begin with frankly. Besides, Alex is my favorite but I can live with him not having a big presence in a Callie centric episode, it's only one week.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
It's was an amazing episode. I can't choose one scene. I loved everything!!

ReplyDeleteI loved the bathroom scene. It took me back to when they first met at Joe's bar. The good old days.
ReplyDeleteOh, the nostalgia.. Even though we still see glimpses of the bar, it doesn't feel the same without Joe

ReplyDeleteYeah, S7 was the last time we saw him. He didn't even got written off, he just disappeared.

ReplyDeleteThe judge announcing his decision and the whole team celebrating. I thought that was really sweet.
