    And just last episode I was thinking how amazing it was they were keeping the love triangle to a bare mínimum... Oh well, I kinda like Cara/Stephen so let's see how this goes.

    very good ep despite the show further developing the requisite "CW love geometry", but at least this felt a bit more natural, but really liked the backstory on Russell (very nice ending) and the team up with John and Russell. Interesting development that Jed is keeping a little TP squeeze out of sight from Ultra - you know that's going to eventually blow up in his face. Liked the plot of Piper and Darcy being sisters and am bummed/surprised that Darcy was killed off so quickly as she could've been a big ally for Stephen within Ultra - the one thing that did feel weak was that Darcy needed to be killed when they already have the best hiding capability - teleporting.... heck Darcy could've jumped herself and not got shot up... but it made for interesting tv. Good to see that Irene, the prodigy TP made it, although you'd think that she would be on the radar again as any gunshot wounds are supposed to be reported in a hospital...

    It's not just CW shows that have love triangles but at least this show doesn't make it like The Vampire Diaries. I actually like Stephen and Cara so it didn't bother me and this episode was great it just gets better and better each episode.

    I know, it's the CW, the whole thing was implicit from the get go. I'm just so glad that the love triangle in this show is just on the side, I hope they keep it that way.

    This show has honestly been one of the biggest surprises of the season for me. I have grown to love it.

    I never cared for Russell in the beginning (probably because he never had screen time or whenever he did, he was making jokes) but after this episode, I genuinely care about him. The ending with him and his mom was heartbreaking.

    Well, we all knew it was coming. Though, I don't mind Stephen/Cara but as long as they don't make the love triangle the main focus and leave the main plot on the side, then I'll be fine with it.

    Are you kidding me?? Whyyyyy??? UGH!! Ok let me just start off by saying, Russell is my favorite. I liked his back story, and for some reason i felt more sympathy for his story. Maybe b/c I can relate to him, i'll say that w/o getting to personal. But it was very nice when he reunited with his mom and played the piano for his father's funeral. I also liked how he revealed himself to his father after his performance. I thought that was very sweet. I actually felt bad that Darcy died. I liked her, and it's kind of poetic how she sacrificed herself for her sister she hasn't seen in yrs. I'm glad Irene is back. Hope she gets more screen time. Now back to my Whyyyy......Ok the cliche act for dodging Ultra by kissing Cara, REALLY? That i coulda shrugged off, but for the rest of the episode it just kept escalating!! First the kiss, then the past relationships talk, then then confession, then the i'm sorry kiss, the the second kiss after the i'm sorry kiss, then to the bedroom....Really??? Ugh! Now I feel bad for John. I mean was she just waiting for John not to be around so she can play?? Or so Stephen can play?? And speaking of play JEDIKIAH IS SUCH A HYPOCRITE!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? That was a helluva twist! Wow. And next week..i'll be glad to see Astrid back, I can't wait til John comes back, and that watch needs to get off Stephen's wrist.

    Yeah it's worth it. The first 2 episodes are good (not the greatest thing but not boring either) but starting with episode 3 it keeps getting better.

    Really hate that they went there. Why can't a story not have a love triangle?



    John is a much more nuanced and interesting character. Cant believe that it was so easy for Cara to fall into Stephen's arms.

    Agreed in all parts. I have felt sorry for John since the pilot but mostly I feel sorry for the viewers having to go through yet another round of love triangle nonsense. This show drops to marathon viewing for me now.

    Depends on what kind of shows you like to watch. It's the new CW typical fare. Love triangles, contrived drama for conflict's sake that may or may not go anywhere, major plot twists, good action scenes, a quick pace, some rough acting, serial mythology, and a Chosen One to save them - all to a sci fi concept.

    I think what helps a lot with Cara/Stephen is that it hasn't been the main focus and it also hasn't been very angsty. Stephen hasn't pined over Cara and complained about how unfair it is that she's with John, etc. I am a bit surprised that Cara cheated on John but in general the love triangle stuff has been well executed and subtle, particularly for a CW show.

    That's actually the part I'm more worried about. I don't want to watch a show where just Stephen is the hero, but he just can't help himself with Cara. Having Cara cheat on John, Stephen go along with it - likely to be followed by John's pining and jealousy - diminishes all their characters, and I'd prefer the show to be about the conflict with ultra, pulling together, and figuring out the sanctuary crap - not the pettiness between themselves.

    Has she got a hero complex going for Stephen or what? Especially now that John has fallen from grace in her eyes. How long til they team up against him and usurp him from leading the TP? "You're the best person I know"...please Cara melodramatic much. Great episode though and loving the show!

    Agreed. I can't take people/characters cheating so I was hoping Cara wasn't going to go down that road. Disappointing. From the beginning was hoping they would show Cara and John as a strong, united couple helping Stephen find himself and go against Ultra. God forbid a show have a couple that are loyal, and have respect for another. Hope its a brief thing

    Was hoping for that too in this show. My view and level of likeness for Cara and Stephen has dropped after this episode. They fact that went as far as they did cheating wise was very disappointing.

    Agreed. While they have never clarified how about Cara is that I remember, Stephen is still in high school and Cara is most definitely not. It's just another contrived drama because people can't seem to wring drama out of the actual sci fi plot. Strange since the whole show is based on conflict that would be far more natural.

    Right? Like the thing that bothers me is just last week she was talking to John about she wanted to be a real couple, and she wanted to be with him, but yet as soon as he leaves all her impure thoughts start pouring out on Stephen. Like if you felt that way about him why bother to keep egging John on? B/c he sure as hell cares about her. She should've just cut her loses before he left, not start an affair behind his back. Makes no sense. She obviously felt that way for awhile, before she saw John kill to defend her. I mean i KNEW they would go in this direction, but hell i at least thought John and Cara would break up first before she went gunning for Stephen, or vice versa.

    Stephen was my favorite character up until this episode. Now I just feel bad for John. Someone else said it, but I'm starting to find him way more mature and nuanced. I'm dreading the inevitable conversation where Cara tells John the cliched, "But you made me have an affair because you kept a secret from me. It's all your fault." And I'm really hoping they handle it differently.

    I liked Russell's backstory. Didn't think he'd have such a troubled past given his personality but then again, this is probably why he became the way he is now.
    I didn't expect Darcy to die and I think it was very noble sacrifice but if she hadn't called Ultra on Piper, she wouldn't have needed to sacrifice herself. If the show lasts long enough, I wonder if we'll get to see Cara's sister or Stephen's brother breaking out.
    Not a fan of the love triangle, it kinda ruined the whole episode for me.

Even after Darcy yelled "Piper, run!", she and Stephen stayed put like a couple of morons until Darcy was shot. I'm also very annoyed that they killed off Darcy so quickly, she's the only person within Ultra so far who seemed like a layered character.

    There are so many things wrong with how they pushed the triangle in this episode that I don't even know where to begin - the contrived situation of John and Cara being at odds JUST now with Stephen around, John going off with Russell, and Cara's sickening praise of how pure, noble and heroic Stephen is - but the one that annoyed me the most is this. The show didn't even treat Stephen and Cara knocking boots like it was cheating. We haven't seen Cara struggling with her growing feelings for Stephen because she's with John. Heck, she didn't even look conflicted while sucking face with Stephen. It's like John doesn't exist.


    I've really liked Cara so far, but if she doesn't feel AWFUL about what they did next week, I'm going to start wanting to punch her whenever she shows up on screen. I don't think people who cheat are monsters or anything, a lot of good people end up doing stupid things like that, but doing so without even a HINT of conflict is just nasty. It's like, the second Cara saw the light of Stephen's noble perfection, she was ready to dump John like yesterday's news. UGH. I won't even get into the craziness of someone picking Stephen over John, because that's a whole other rant.

    I'm biased but I have to say, I think Nikita has been the only CW show so far to get romance right when it comes to people acting like adults, being respectful towards their partners and not jumping into bed with others. They flirted a little with triangles (Michael/Nikita/Cassandra in S2, Alex/Sean/Owen in S3) but never really went there. I guess SPN hasn't done the awful triangle stuff either, but that's mostly because the format of the show negates the possibility of serious romantic plotlines.

    I agree, apart from my objection to triangles in general and the happy-go-lucky way Cara cheated on John in particular, the age gap makes it difficult to see them as a potential couple. She may not be much older than him but she seems "older and wiser" in terms of her demeanor. Although she's obviously not so wise if she's ready to cheat on a good guy like John with Stephen's bland Gary Stu-ish perfection, and not feel even remotely bad about it.

    Me too, if they had to do the triangle BS they could've at least made the development more gradual. Instead, as soon as Cara and Stephen realize they like each other, they jumped into bed like there's no tomorrow. Cara didn't even look remotely conflicted about cheating on the boyfriend she's been with for a long time. She was my favorite character until the end of the episode and I *hate* that they made her do this.

    I hated Cara's whole monologue about how perfect and noble Stephen is, both because the writers are clearly shoving Stephen down our throats as a Gary Stu, and because it's supposed to make it believable that Cara would cheat on John without batting an eyelash. If they had to have Stephen and Cara sleep together, they could've waited a couple of episodes while showing Cara being conflicted about her feelings for Stephen and growing further apart from John. This just makes her look very unsympathetic, and as someone who had really liked her, it upsets me.

    Before seeing this latest episode, I would've answered with a yes. Now it's more of a "maybe", because this episode took a wretched love triangle that was subtextual until now and force-fed it to the audience in a really obnoxious way. It also unnecessarily killed off an interesting character (in my opinion). We have to see where things go from here, on the whole I enjoy the show, but I do fear the triangle will do serious damage.

    Given my well-known hatred of anything that even smacks of love geometry, it is amazing that something else could be worse and yet this is. They might as well canonize Stephen now and turn him into a lovely statue. Argh! It is a sign of bad writing if you have to have every single person tell the main character how right he always is. In every argument, the person who did not side with Stephen ends up saying they were wrong and he was right. Also they have almost every character tell Stephen how super special and all important and morally superior he is...and it happens every episode. Writers, how about some show, not tell. If you want me to believe that Stephen is the bestest thing in the whole wide world, stop forcinghim down my throat. Right now he's my least favorite character.

    I guess they rushed so many things because they didn't know they would get a full season when they shot this episode.It does not excuse the love triangle, which would have happened anyway because it's Julie Plec, but maybe it explains why they did it so quickly...

    That is what I'm dreading. She showed no regret, or guilt about cheating on John. Did he even pass through her thoughts at all!? You would think if John meant anything to her, after being with Stephen she would back off, realize her mistake. Any respect for Cara I have will go out the window if she continues to be with Stephen in the next episode. It shows me she isn't conflicted about her feelings and just doesn't care about John. The only reason I can think of why they are trashing this character is to have her redeem herself in the future. But yeah she would have to show some guilt in her actions. And for the relationship between Stephen and Cara, it happened so fast in such a small time space, I just don't see it lasting, if it actually turns into anything. Can't wait for the beat down John is gonna give Stephen!

    It did feel very forced and very sudden. Its like shes caught up in this hero-worship for Stephen. They may have a connection, but hurting John in that way, her boyfriend who shes been through so much with is no excuse. I hope she realizes what her actions have done when John returns and she sees the aftermath. But yeah agreed, the Cara, Stephen thing and them sleeping together is very sudden and I also hope they keep all this do the sidelines and make me like Cara again!

    It seems so unlike her. From what we've seen so far, she may have her blind spots but she's a mature and calculated person. Frankly, I would've found her jumping into bed with Stephen so quickly kind of abrupt and OOC even if she *wasn't* with John. But with her being in a serious relationship (I don't remember how long they've been together but I'm pretty sure it's at least 2 years?), it feels downright far-fetched that Cara would hook up with another guy on a whim because she's mad at John.


    They really need to redeem her for this. If next week's episode starts with she and Stephen being all lovey dovey in bed, I'm going to throw something at my poor, blameless screen.

    Ok I love this show and I have been suffering with its ratings every single week but this was by far my least favorite episode. The sister storyline was fine and all but other than that, I hated that they shoved the love triangle down our faces like that. It really ruins the characters of Kara and Steven to just cheat on John like that while he was out helping a friend. I hated it. I am still a big fan of the show and I hope it makes it but I am really angry at this. What was the need for that? Russel's storyline was... fine, but I don't think he should carry many episodes, he is not compelling enough to do so, he works bet as comic relief I feel. I am super pissed with this.

    Regarding show-don't-tell storytelling - I found it fascinating that here in this episode we had Cara saying how awesome and noble Stephen is... juxtaposed with John's storyline where he was actually *being* awesome and noble, supporting Russell and getting him to where he needed to go, quietly, without any need to shout about it, or have anyone else shout about it either.


    Lastly, I'll just add that Stephen's little digs to Cara bout how she needs to "think for herself" came across more as manipulative and more like, "you need to think like me." Come on - if we're going to have a "strong" female, caught between two males (as loathsome, incongruous, and impractical as that storyline may be) let her truly have her own mind, and not be yanked around just because Stephen is pretty, and there, and says she should do things his way and not John's.

    I am bothered by Cara as the "strong" female as well since she seems to be there merely to rubber stamp everything Stephen says and does and to provide contrived drama via the love triangle. She's a plot device masking as a strong character and quite frankly makes me hope that Irene will end up taking on the strong female part in the future,

    I feel they turned Cara from a character that was strong and interesting, into a pawn, there to be manipulated and to bounce between Stephen's way or John's.


    If the writers are trying to present a strong female character - let her live to a code, let her stand up for things as we've seen her do, but not subversively bounce from John to Stephen just because Stephen goaded her about "thinking for herself."


    When she said, "You told me to think for myself, and I did," at the end of the episode, I didn't get the sense that she *had* actually been thinking for herself. I got the sense she was just trying to please Stephen. Plus, as an audience, we've seen her interact with John - personally, I've never got the sense that she was afraid to bring her opinion to the table in that relationship, or to challenge John when she felt it was needed. So why is she bowing to the sudden accusation from Stephen that she can't think for herself? Why is Stephen making the overreaching assumption that she's just been John's yes-man this whole time?


    That didn't track for me. It doesn't mesh with what I feel I've seen of her character so far. And to suddenly have a high school kid come along and say, "You're just not thinking for yourself," because she wasn't doing things the high school kid wanted her to do...


    It felt patronizing - not liberating. Not like a moment of strength for her at all.

    Agree with all you said, except Russell. I loved his storyline, and I love that they gave him depth. I don't want to see him relegated to comic relief as I think that would do his character and acting ability a disservice, as well as the show. I like the comic persona he brandies about, but without depth, he becomes a caricature instead of a character. In this episode, he sold it for me. I found him compelling, and I hope they weave him well into the story lines in the future.

    i had the same worry. i felt they would just use him for comic relief w/o actually giving him a storyline and making him exspendable. I am VERY glad they gave him a storyline, b/c he is definitely a keeper. There's no doubt they'll give him greater stories in the future. : )

    The John/Russell friendship moments were awesome, we never really got to see them interact before. I want to see more of that. And Cara/Russell too because her character has to start being more than the bone two dogs are fighting over.

    Wow, that was very well-said. I could write whole paragraphs but instead I'll just co-sign.

    Just as Stephen was manipulative towards Cara, the show was manipulative towards US by saying Stephen is good for Cara because she needs to think for herself, which is not only contrived but actually a contradiction of what we've seen so far. Because like you said, Cara has no problem speaking her mind.

    This is a very blatant case of telling the audience instead of showing. Terrible writing.

    Agreed. I'm quoting someone else's comment I read somewhere in this thread which I can't find now so I don't know exactly who said it, but I'd been concerned that they were just going to just use Aaron in the role of Russell as the token minority without giving him screen time or depth. He could be an awesome character if they use him well and really pull him into the main dynamic. His acting ability is clearly there. I would really like to see him align closely with John, and/or start to share some serious opinions of his own.


    If they continue to write the comedic persona, I'm hoping the writers keep in mind what I would call the Scarlet Pimpernel principle - let the comedic persona serve a serious purpose.

    I'm the one that said that. Or at least I'm one of the ones who said that. Really didn't want Russell to be the token minority that was literally marginalized. While John has abruptly become my favorite, how they develop Russell as a character is going to seriously influence whether I keep watching the show or not. That said, I really enjoyed the background they've given him and want to see them do more. I like your comparison to the Scarlet Pimpernel. As long as they don't just write him as the clown or the fool.
