POLL : What did you think of The Mentalist - Red John?

  1. What, did you expect some kind of epic fight scene? Maybe a shootout with some karate moves like The Matrix? A dark sky and rain pouring down as they go into dramatics about life and death. How about Jane doing some kind of cathartic scream as he plunges a blade into RJ's chest and says some really stupid one liner? Give me a break.

  2. as a huge mentalist fan i agree it was a let down. i was expecting RJ to tell him how one of the team member gave him the list but i guess we will find out how he got the list later on in the season.

  3. What about the Red Barn? The Visualize connection? What about Rosalind Harker and Dumar? What about the Carters? How did he come up with the smilie face? How did a weak, old man overpower so many victims?

  4. What the actual F... I don't know what to think actually.. :/ I've mixed feelings

  5. Let me put it like this: There is absolutely no way everyone is going to be satisfied. It's been a long time coming, and everyone had their own expectations on how it would end. Personally, when I read those articles about the final scene I actually used basic reasoning skills and deduced something like this would be the ending. Not exactly, of course, but it was pretty close.

If you're not happy with how it ended, that's fine. You're free to feel that way. But personally, I enjoyed the fact that RJ was humanized in the end. Since the first season he was built up like an omnipotent God who couldn't be killed. He manipulated like a criminal mastermind, and made Jane's life hell. He thwarted every agency that tried to catch him like they were a bunch of idiots.

But in the end, the "God" was humanized. Not only to the audience, and to Jane, but also to himself. He had an ENORMOUS ego. Imagine what it was like for someone like him to be torn down from the throne he saw himself on. He felt like he was unstoppable, but in the end he was shown he wasn't.

The was a great end for RJ. It threw his arrogance back in his face and made him beg to live, as I'm sure so many of his own victims did before their deaths. RJ was practically a legend, now he's only human.

  6. So what department of CBS do you work for?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Lol Red John calling 911 how funny! Awful!

    Fucking, Bruno Heller,

    Fucking, The Mentalist,

    Fucking Red John!

    Totally disappointing

    ReplyDelete
  8. I call a prediction of shocking proportions, just as when Red John called out the list, The Mentalist's rating will plummet after the next upcoming episode.

Yes, I was disappointed in the revelation of Red John, TWICE.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The "Department of Common Sense and Realistic Expectations". We really need a new name.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I never expected RJ to be such a coward!! Begging for his life like a big cry baby!! And the "best" at last he tries to call the police ..... lol

    ReplyDelete
  11. You could use a Department of Good Writing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Made me think of Ted Bundy. Man is the reason why the words "serial killer" now exist. It was coined to explain him. Cried and panicked before his execution.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't have a problem with WHO Red John was. The transformation in front of our eyes felt to me like Keyser Soze or Tommy from Flame Red, it was as if he stopped playing the clueless old sherif and revealed himself for how he was, even his gaze and/or his demeanor changed. The problem is how did it end :/ Anticlimatic might be close to what I'm feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Uhuh...because an ending you don't agree with automatically erases everything they've done before that ending. Wow...it's like Mass Effect 3 all over again.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't understand why you say this? Who the hell did you think was going to be Red John. The writers fooled you. They did their job and you just seem bitter that you were wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  16. and your posting under several names downing people's comments./ Get a life

    ReplyDelete
  17. McAllister should have had more screen time heck I'm still not convinced he's RJ but it didn't suck as much as I thought it would from the reactions of ppl who've seen it before I just wanted that scene to be longer to fully get that RJ was the sheriff all along-oh well I'm already over it and can't wait to see how they do this reboot

  18. I think most of us will now go forward thinking things should have been left at the end of Season 3. Strawberries and Cream was the better written ending. This garbage tonight was rushed, poorly written and executed. They will enjoy their ratings spike with this episode and think it equals out to success, but next episode when reality hits....and the ratings tank..... I hope they understand they really ruined YEARS worth of build up.
It wasn't who Red John was, that failed here, it was the lazy execution of it all. I'm sure Bruno and company will push forward saying fans LOVED IT...... but to give this to your loyal fanbase who stuck by as the show switched nights/time slots etc... its just a huge slap in the face. Just look at the poll results above....... what a farce!!
If so many really enjoyed that, then you can stick by this sinking ship and stay with it from here on but em and my Wife are done. Just like Jane, we are letting go. No more staying up late or putting off things to support something that repays your time and effort with such lazy lazy lazy writing.

Its no wonder so many thought the leak was a fake.....we all told ourselves this has to be a gag right? The scenes, the script....THIS is what you give us??
Strawberries and Cream was the true ending we deserved. This was just embarrassing to sit through tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is the worst episode of the mentalist, and it should have been the
most epic episode, Bruno Heller promised us answers, but we just got
more questions after this one. If you are new to the show, stop at the
episode called strawberries and cream , and forget about the rest.

Not only did the episode leak 4-5 days before it was supposed to come
on T.V, but they even managed to spoil it in a 30 second long promo,
and in a picture posted on the Cbs official site, I just can't believe
that the same man that gave us Strawberry and cream, created this, I'm
in shock,no words can even begin to describe what I'm feeling right
now, I love this show so much, but we didn't get anything Bruno Heller
promised us, unless the next episode gives us some mind blowing , I'm
afraid there won't be a season 7, maybe not even the rest of this
    season either

  20. You're so full of shit. It's not bad because I don't agree with it, it's bad because it's poorly written and goofy. Even the actors were garish and campy.

    NOTHING IS EXPLAINED.

    ReplyDelete
  21. compared to this the Lost finale is a 8 time Oscar winning movie

    ReplyDelete
  22. The worst episode of all time. They just wanted to get it over and done with. 5 years of clues and guessing to have this cheap disgrace of an episode. I thought it was a comedy it was so laughable. Red John reveals himself? Wants to kill Jane by shooting him. Brings a woman with a knife to back him up. Bertram falls like an OAF. NO twists. half the episode was running running and more running. The whole thing was a joke. Thanks Heller for nothing. How you could mess it up is just beyond me but I won't be tuning in anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well I, for one, loved it.
Did it answer every single question I had? Nope, and I'm fine with that. It was never going to answer everything, but it answered enough for me.
Was I satisfied with the RJ reveal? Yep. It had to be one of the 3 presumed dead pulling a switcheroo, the whole thing with Bertram was a bit too obvious (I wasn't expecting Bertram to be dispatched like that however, ow). Could it have been any of those three? Yeah, that was the point of the list, it could have been any 7 of them because they all fit the profile. Even Jane couldn't use what he knew of their personalities to tell which one was Red John. So I'm fine with McAllister turning out to be RJ.
Was I satisfied with his demise? Yeah. Red John had been built up to be a mysterious, omnipotent manipulator, sure, but in the end he was also just a human being and that's why he got defeated. He desperately wanted appreciation from Jane, so he made the mistake of revealing himself to him (after all he always seemed to have this strange 'bond' or fascination with Jane). He had this very human phobia of birds and so it was used against him. And in the end, he was just a pitiful, pathetic man crawling away from his pursuer and begging for his life, and I loved that. We saw the end of Red John not as the mysterious serial killer but as the man he always was.
Speaking of the end, how great were Simon Baker and Xander Berkeley in their scenes together? The church one, and especially the last one. Simon's face as Jane straddles McAllister and then strangles him is not one I will soon forget, and how great was it that the camera stayed on him the whole time? By the way, did you notice that it was the very first time, if I'm not mistaken, that Jane utters his wife's name? And he strangles McAllister with his left hand, the one with the ring. How fitting.
On that subject, am I glad that Jane killed RJ? Yes and no. I confess that I kind of wanted Jane to bring him to the authorities, but honestly I couldn't see it go any other way than with RJ's death.
Oh, and did anyone else think that Jane was going to use the gun on himself afterwards? What with the way he raised it and all. If so, that's even more heartbreaking.
As for the other characters, they all played their part. Loved that the whole team came to Jane's help. Lisbon broke my heart when she was looking at the empty CBI offices. Abbott was great, quite smart too, which is really nice. Can't wait to see more of him.
Also, special mention to Blake Neely's soundtrack, which was wonderful as always. I had already seen the leak with the re-used cues, but the final product with the new music... wow. And perfect choice on the total absence of music or any noise other than nature when Jane kills MacAllister, and with Jane's theme being the very last piece of music we hear in the episode.
(speaking of music, I'm really sad that we won't get to hear Red John's leitmotif anymore)
The only thing I'm still a bit iffy about is Jane pulling a pigeon out of his jacket. My friend Connor told me that I should see it as Jane pulling a magician's trick like he always does, I agree with him but I still think a pigeon's a bit big for a trick like that. I am, however, willing to suspend my disbelief :)
So. Was it an amazing battle of wits with RJ and Jane outsmarting each other in turn? Not exactly, and I don't mind. I like it as it is for the reasons I mentioned above. The episode was never going to please everybody, we all had different things we wanted to see, different expectations, different questions we absolutely wanted answers to. I think it answered enough and was a satisfying conclusion, but to each their own.
In any case... bring on next week! I, for one, can't wait to see what The Mentalist 2.0 will be like.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The WHO was fine. The episode was a a disgrace. We deserved more.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Answers to our questions. Something reasonable not a comedy show.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm sorry, you seem to have an interesting concept of time. This episode only had so much time to reveal things. I'm going by this REALLY wild guess, seriously it's kind of out there but stick with me because I'm about to blow your mind: they're going to explain things in future episodes! Whoa, I know right?!

I mean, who knew that new information about RJ and his motivations could be discovered and revealed AFTER HIS DEATH. It's not like RJ left behind a life or anything. I'm sure he used a magical spell and placed all of his belongings in a pocket dimension where no one could ever find it.

Or we can use logic and come to the conclusion that they're going to tear apart RJ's life after his death in order to discover his motivations. I mean...there is THAT. They could even use detectives!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was very satisfied with the end. Jane got his closure. I think the FBI agent was over the top. Not bending one bit. I love this show.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Who gives a shit about his motivations now that he's dead? He's dead!

    It's backwards writing, shill.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You are probably going to be one of the few people watching those future episodes. Some people don't know what quality means.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "Patrick... you've got it all wrong. I'm not Red John... I'm not."

    EXCEPT HE WAS.

    Great writing, Heller.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have no idea who that Red John guy was. I mean, I know the name and the face, but only as Sheriff McAllister. Very sad that the producers didn't wanted to actually tell us anything about the main antagonist of the show, just barely give him some minutes to explain himself after 6 seasons of pure speculation. The finale of season 3 wasn't great either, because there was no explanation of anything which happened before either, but it still was at least a way better Red John. So I pretend the show was over after season 3.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So...your complaint is that nothing is explained...but you also don't want anything explained because he's dead...?

    O.o

    Yep, you've lost me.

    ReplyDelete
  33. we expected what bruno promised all the fans. we expected the wrapping-up of six years of storyline and explanation of unanswered questions. what we got was a sick joke

    ReplyDelete
  34. How can it possibly plummet from the low it experienced in this episode?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh lol at whoisredjohn.com idiots, bombing the vote. Pathetic bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Absolute shit, the acting when Bertram died is a nominee for worst of all time.

Bruno Heller you suck, people who made the promo you are even worse, seriously how do you give away Red Johns identity after six years in a fucking promo.

The season 3 finale would have been a much better end for Red John.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Everybody's entitled to their opinion, who are you to say that kind of thing to him/her? You're disappointed, it's fine, but YOUR opinion isn't everybody else's. Please calm down.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was okay. It didn't matter to me who Red John was, just how everything played out. It felt a little flat and off.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Seriously, I pity those who vote for awesome ... it was a ridiculous episode.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh are you EVER in the wrong place if you're expecting people to be calm and reasonable instead of pissed and combative. Seriously, check out a OUAT comment section at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  41. And that is the problem with people like you. People who love a show always complain that "haters" do not respect other people's opinions; but I find that it is mere hypocrisy, for most of these so-called fans cannot tolerate criticism. Was the word "idiots" necessary? If you like the show, then that is awesome, but that does not mean that others have to. The folks on whoisredjohn.com take out the time to coherently write why they are not satisfied with the show. They are neither haters nor trolls, but dedicated fans.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ok Partridge changed the DNA on the database and was killed off in the first episode...this implies that RJ knew that partrick would want to meet with him at his house...planned the whole bomb thing in advance...so they are kind of saying that RJ has "real psychic powers"...and if he really is that smart...why would he show up in a church with no back up plan...since he knows that Patrick wants him dead...and he relied on a woman with a knife...ok one more thing..in the church scene when the woman is talking to patrick telling him that this is not what he wants...how did she know about his motives...why didn't Patrick figure out that she was with RJ and she was only getting close so that she can try to kill him ?? not only the episode doesn't answer any crucial questions about the whole red john thing...but it also brings so many more due to the plot holes...knowing that starting the next episode..the red john chapter is closed and it will not be brought up again, even the titles won't have "red" in them !!! I mean there so many plot holes that the whole episode seemed as a joke. Red John and Patrick Jane are the whole story. Patrick dedicated 10 years of his life to finding Red John and getting his revenge. He failed each time he thought he got close to catching him. The writers made him look like a " god " , if I may say, with all the power he has over people and mindgames he played on everyone. He was Patrick's greatest mystery. We wouldn't have had high expectations if it wasn't for all the stories told throughout the seasons and years. We were expecting a grandiose finale to the Red John saga because it is the main story of the show. Bruno Heller and all the writers owed us a grandiose finale, because we the fans are the reasons to why this show is still around after so many years. they kept teasing us, making us belive that we were getting close to the truth and then coming up with amazing plot twists, and it was AWESOME ! So for them to close the show this way is unacceptable. We would have been fine with any suspect on the list being RJ, as long as they made the plot belivable, some anwers ( they have to keep some mystery to keep the show going) and the actor should have delivered. In this case, Xander Berekley is not to blame, because he delivered with what he had to work with, hell he even made it believable when Jane threw the pigeon at him ( can't belive i'm really saying this ). It would have been a great "regular" episode, but it was not supposed to be a regular episode, it was supposerd to be The Red John episode, the final show down, when Patrick would finally face his arch nemesis.

    ReplyDelete
  43. just wondering, did you watch any of the last five seasons? i know heller was trying to surprise us with someone we did not expect, but turning the infamous red john into a hillbilly sheriff wimp is outrageous and...whats the word im looking for... inciting to anger. like a sick joke to people who expected a serial killer who was manipulative and clever.

    ReplyDelete
  44. They had five years to explain. They failed even in the finale of the arc. They don't get more time. They fail. That's it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh I respectfully disagree; try to see the situation from his perspective. I would have a hard time trusting law officials whose boss is part of a corrupt secret society.

    ReplyDelete
  46. >.< block of text! WHY? Enter key is our friend! T.T

    ReplyDelete
  47. I did. Like I said, Red John wasn't just a serial killer, but also a human being with his flaws and weaknesses, to use Carter Peak's words (I think...?) from the S3 finale. I wonder if the problem of people who didn't like the episode is that RJ was revealed and not at all what they expected. Out of curiosity, would you have been more satisfied if he'd died without us ever seeing him or watching snivel on the ground like that?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Seriously how can you think this episode was awesome??? It was badly written etc. Red John was written as this evil genius mastermind yet a Piegon is the thing that takes him down WTH Bruno.

Bradley Whitford reveal at the end of Season 3 was so much better of a reveal & so ive decided he is RJ & past 3 years havent happened

    ReplyDelete
  49. the acting when Bertram died, nominee for worst of all time

    ReplyDelete
  50. ... I really don't want to check a OUAT comment section now that you've said that...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh well I guess because you say it failed, that's all there is to it. A large number of people agree with you, so I guess you feel pretty confident in your assessment.

I shall now go outside and do a test. I will have 5 people proclaim aloud that the sun is black. Exactly opposite to them I will have 10 people say the sun is green. It will be an interesting test to see if numbers have any effect on reality.

    ReplyDelete
  52. honestly, no. i suppose its better than nothing. just kinda wishing i didn't watch it now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't know what others thought who Red John would be, but I thought it was an evil serial killer and genius of playing mind games. Not a one-dimensional cliché with less character and charisma than any case-of-week antagonist.

    ReplyDelete
  54. haha sorry about that, i was just so mad I didn't realize I wrote this much before posting :D

    ReplyDelete
  55. We are neither idiots nor pathetic, we didn´t like the episode so we vote awful or poor, simple as that. If you liked it, good for you I guess =)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Let's be respectful of other people's opinions. I absolutely hated the episode because my most of my expectations were not met. So many other fans enjoyed it, and I am OK with that. In fact, I find it interesting that the majority of fans thought that the episode was either "awesome" or "awful". I am still going to continue to watch this show till it is either cancelled or wrapped up.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I know *sighs* We're feeling all emotional. *group hug*.. BTW, you can edit, you know ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I am awaiting the numerous gifs that scene will birth.

    ReplyDelete
  59. oh come on, you know this episode will have a spike in the ratings. Its what happens afterwards, is what I'm talking about and so did some other commenters.

    ReplyDelete
  60. LOL isn't this fandom a passionate -opinionated bunch. Dudes it really is just a tv show love it or hated it ...still a tv show

    ReplyDelete
  61. In hindsight, I probably should have checked the time and noticed that the Sun was no longer out because it's 11pm. Oh well, the point remains the same.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Aaaah so much better, thanks ^ ^

    ReplyDelete
  63. If anyone knows a Brett Partridge fan, please give them a hug. He or she deserves it. Every Mentalist fan-site that I know of has BP has its main suspect.

    ReplyDelete
  64. We need a support group !

    ReplyDelete
  65. LOL. I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think we've all been there. Maybe once the emotions aren't running so high you'll look back at the episode and it'll grow on you a bit more? Or not. In any case, sorry that it wasn't what you wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Everyone was thrilled and looking forward to finally see the end of Red John. The difference is probably that pretty much everyone who voted "awful" would have loved to vote "awesome" but couldn't. But everyone who voted "awesome" would have voted "awesome" anyway, even if the whole episode would have just been about Jane reading the phone book.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I do know people like that. No matter what happens, they will always love the show. Well, what can I say?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Or maybe people voted "awesome" because they liked the episode, that doesn't make them mindless drones.

    ReplyDelete
  70. he's gonna regret it for the rest of his life.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I totally agree with you. Also, I didn't really expect all of the loose ends suddenly being tied up together and all, because seriously, they had only 42 minutes to work on. Besides, at least that psycho lady got out, and there's probably more Red John's associates out there as well, so I don't think it's completely over yet. So, they'll have time wrapping it all up.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Care to elaborate? It'd be great to know what you liked/didn't like that caused you to have these mixed feelings :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Actually, you might be right to some extend. All I can say is that clearly nobody votes "awful" because he is a mindless drone. But I'm not so sure about everyone who votes "awesome".

    ReplyDelete
  74. Actually, some people do vote "awful" just because. But yeah, I'll concede that some do vote "awesome" no matter what. I guess both sides have them.

    ReplyDelete
  75. If I had written this episode, McAllister would have died in his house from the gunshot wound. And Jane would have made his own painting on McAllister's wall ;)

    http://s7.directupload.net/images/131125/pevfmms9.png

    ReplyDelete
  76. Actually it's also www.red-john.info. You forgot that one too. Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Amen, you lovely human being. And yes, I did think he was going to shoot himself. That was horrible couple seconds right there...

    ReplyDelete
  78. oh.. I more or less did it in another comment :) Basically, I'm OK with who Red John was, it was like a Red Flame episode. To me the "sheriff" was just another alias a character, an identity as Roy Tagliaferro was.

On the other hand, the confrontation or maybe the execution, I don't know, can't put my finger on it (Although many people have noted out some good points) the whole thing was a letdown for me.. anticlimatic. I might need to see the episode again though.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh I'm sorry, I did read your comment but glossed over your name >_> I understand about the confrontation, to be honest I was a bit like you at first, but the more I watched it the more it grew on me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Thanks. Yeah, I'm a bit shocked that he almost went there, especially since that didn't even seem to have crossed his mind post-killing Carter Peak. Thankfully he came to his senses :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. D'you know what, I thought about this (the smiley face) a few times too. I think that would have been a bit too grisly for the show and the character though.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Not problem.. I know. I'm trying to keep up with the discussion, but as fast as the comments come, most of the time I forget to check who's making it >.<

    ReplyDelete
  83. he is mar? red johns voice? stiles and mcallister? visualize and mcallister? mcallister banged lorelei and her sister and bare bitches cause what.. hes hot and charismatic? mcallister had one of his famous assassins come with a knife to attack jane... really? red john has psychic powers? not a single flashback explaining anything. the mighty, genius, cunning red john crying for help, calling 911 and taken down by a hidden pigeon in janes pocket.

Awful episode. Shame on CBS and The Ment(shit)alist for allowing such an episode to air. People voted awful cause it was awful.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Wow people are being really disrespectful in this thread! I wouldn't want to cut most of you off on the highway :/

  85. Marie-Elise POLYXEN25 November 2013 at 05:45

I'm kinda satisfy about RJ begging but not about Jane killing him even he always said that he'll do it... I'm kinda of furious because Lisbon and the team were shut out the conclusion and that Jane could not talk to her...and more I'm mad with the promo for next episode... well I'm seriously disappointed...(but the suspense was great !)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Well we DID have a taste what it was going to be like for Jane to kill Red John in season 3 finale. Even if it was fake at the end, for that moment Jane thought he'd done it... we all did :| (Though I wasn't thinking about Strawberries and Cream when I was watching)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Brett Partridge is my god25 November 2013 at 05:56

I'm still in denial and butthurt about that episode. Of all the words to describe my feelings, yes, butthurt is the most appropriate.
I liked what they were trying to go for in the episode, bring Red John back down to earth, show everyone he's not this 'god' character and whatnot. But that was the worst possible way to pull it off. Also, none of the questions were answered, and the clues that led up to now made no sense either.
Brett Partridge was the perfect candidate to be Red John, even after he died. Theories about him kept pumping even after season 6 episode 7, and they all fit so well. Theory #14444 on whoisredjohn is the perfect ending to the Red John arc if Partridge was Red John.
I think I'm gonna take a break from this series, maybe I'll get back to it if I ever get over Partridge...

    ReplyDelete
  88. Young One, I couldn't agree with you more (though your shit a list made me laugh out loud. Shame on them for making us wait all this time and then to be served this crap. Well I can't really blame CBS. I blame the producer, Heller, and the writers.

    ReplyDelete
  89. You are my kind of people Steve. I've been saying that everything I post a comment. Bradley Whitford was the real RJ and Heller made a big boo boo when he didn't end Red John's story line there. Cause this was was pathetic. When you have so many unsatisfied fans, then you didn't do your job right. With Whitford at the end of season 3, fans were satisfied, until the return of season 4 when they revealed it was not really RJ. What a let down and everything went downhill after that. I still enjoyed the show, but it was never the same. And this RJ reveal left me empty and dissatisfied.

  90. First 5 seasons of clues were worthless... served no purpose as it pertained to the RJ reveal. The first two-thirds of this episode also was just filler and served no purpose (it took to the 40 minute mark for Jane to finally meet up with Bertram). So, I don't want to hear that they only have 42 minutes (60 with commercials) in an episode and can't get everything in.

Also, the execution of things in the episode is just comical.

    1. Let's use new characters instead of established ones (FBI guy, SACPD guy, and woman with knife).
    2. When you are surprisingly shot and killed, make sure you comically die by saying "Hey?!"
    3. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight. But, do bring a pigeon to a gun fight.
    4. A younger healthier Jane has a lot of trouble running down an older SHOT Red John. In the words of the Black Knight, "It's just a flesh wound!"
    5. 911? RJ here, and I am about to be killed. (I understand the point here was to show how much a of wimp RJ was when he is by himself, but it didn't sell that way. It came across as comical.)
    6. Answer my questions by blinking? One if by land, two if by sea!
    7. I knew your list because I'm psychic. (thanks for creating more questions than providing answers)

The very end of the episode after they show Jane running and when it shows the people in the park, the very last people shown are a girl going down a slide with a man standing there (we see him from behind). The frame froze there for a second or two and the music score changed to being slightly eerie right before it ended. (was this nothing or something? point being, thanks for more questions!)

It never really mattered to me who ended up being RJ. (Well, as long as it wasn't Reede Smith). But the writing of this episode was just bad. It felt as if they just wanted it over with and spent one day coming up with it. It was as if they were told the show had been canceled and they had one more day to make a final episode.

Things in the episode had too much of a comical feel to them. For those that remember Reno 911, I feel this episode should be renamed "Pigeon 911".

  91. I am disappointed. That's all i can really say at this moment.

  92. This episode wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst. I love this show and I'm willing to watch it till the end. Even though he ending of the RJ arc Isn't as great as most people envisioned, that doesn't take away just how great the other episodes have been. I enjoyed it but I guess people are entitled to their own opinion. My favorite scene was the park scene. The way they looked at each other, I thought they were going to kiss. After a decade of her putting up with his ridiculous antics and she doesn't even get a hug? That was disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  93. RJ was only human not this super being. I guess the writers were trying to prove that like all humans, RJ had his fears. Everyone is afraid of something and in this case, RJ was afraid of pigeons. I'm pretty sure we'll get answers on the next episode. Just because he's dead, it doesn't mean he won't be mentioned. It wasn't the best episode I agree, but it was enjoyable to watch but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

    We're missing the "Shit" option.

  95. As someone who hasn't watched the show from the very beginning, I was really disappointed (and judging from the poll results and the comments, I'm not the only one). I knew of the whole Red John character and what he did to Jane which started the entire show, so knowing that the "big reveal" was finally coming made me want to watch... and that was not what I was expecting. I feel for the fans that have been waiting six years for that.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm going to say one thing... When you do this kind of things in books or tv shows YOU MUST PLAN THIS OUT FROM THE BEGINING!

This was clearly a LOST kind of thing, where all that happened before Season 5 doesn't count at all... That's what pissed me off the most! They have the rest of the season to explain things, but the problem at heart is that all the clues prior Season 5 just go "puf!"

Partridge was the better choice or Haffner, they both made more sense... If Breaking Bad proved something, was that it doesn't matter if the ending is predictable as long as it's good. They went the "big twist way" by ignoring almost every clue from early episodes thinking people just woudn't remember.

If Partridge would have been Red John the ending would get more sense(Especially Rosalind Harker's description that has nothing to do with McAllister)...

THE ENDING WAS OK, BUT IT SHOWED REALLY POOR WRITING FROM BRUNO HELLER...

  97. Heller has said that RJ will never be mentioned again and that no answers will be given.

  101. If you guys are interested, here's a little inside scoop for you on how the episode was written: http://s15.postimg.org/biqpstd4b/th174.jpg

    ReplyDelete
  102. Red John was so out of character. No explanations. Ridiculous scenes and dialogue. I still can't believe it. Heller ruined it and only my love for the characters is left, certainly no respect for Heller.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I didn't want any fight scene. I wanted mind games, suspence, Jane and RJ having a real confrontation, explanations. Honestly, you could've picked any of the suspects (or any character at all) to be RJ and it would have been the same episode. It was all so incredibly generic and lame and plain stupid. A pigeon. RJ calling 911. It was a comedy.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Thank you....I feel sick to my stomach....

    ReplyDelete
  105. That's right!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. As someone who only watched sporadically, stopped watching after the last Red John cop-out (honestly, one of the best season finales ever and they ruined it in the aftermath) and only watched now because I wanted to see the reveal....this was anticlimactic. Not because of who Red John was, but because I expected more from the final confrontation, one last big plan or game to play with Jane. What they came up with was disappointing...and predictable. It was the kind of ending I feared the writes would do, relying entirely on a "let's change the murder" twist instead of coming up with something satisfying. I would have loved, for example, a whole episode with Jane and Red John in the same place, just talking about the why. But I guess to do this, the whole thing should have made sense. But at no point they really explained how RJ managed to find so many fanatic helpers.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I get the feeling that RJ is not dead - something about the way the last scene was shot makes me think the body will have gone missing and we will get RJ killing again.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I cant imagine how such a brilliant show could take us for such pigeons.

    ReplyDelete
  109. oh no, all interviews says that the RJ page is fully turned. And that page (the RJ last one) almost costed me a 911 call, so heartbreaking bad...empty is a better word.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Thanks for making me laugh :)

  111. I guess you haven't watched The Mentalist in the previous seasons, because they DID give us some clue, especially in season 5 and in this season 6.
I think you missed them and you just watched the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  112. All those awful comments I'm reading are because people are upset for the choice Heller made with Red John.
Also, there are people who stopped watching the show after season 3, and they jumped to this one without knowing what happened before.

    ReplyDelete
  116. It doesn't matter who Red John is as long as you give that character a good background and a real reason to do so...

I watched it again and i must say: This is bad writing at it's best! I'm sorry but it was plain aweful. You can write four pages about everything that's wrong with the episode's script and it's cut.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Ok, at least you gave me reasons why you didn't like it and I respect your opinion.
The episode had some gaps, that's true, but still it was amazing the performances, especially Simon's and Xander's.

    ReplyDelete
  121. It's the first time you'd actually met the 'character', pal. 'Red John' is a myth. It's not that hard to grasp.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Some peoples desire to know every single answer to every single question makes me chuckle. Did I genuinely just see someone ask 'what about the RJ woman with the knife? WHAT HAPPENED TO HER?' as a criticism.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I wonder how many of these people will actually put their money where their mouth is and stop watching from now on...actually I don't wonder because I already know.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Honestly the only question they didn't answer this season that I would have liked them to is the Visualize connection, other than that I got everything I wanted.

This wasn't the final epic chapter encapsulated into 42 minutes, that's what this final 8 ep arc has been as a whole. This episode on his own was about 2 things 1. Revealing RJ and showing he is just a man and 2. Jane getting his emotional closure. It achieved both of these things greatly. Red John being so weak at the end and Jane destroying him is what I've wanted for so long. The power of Red John (and the fun for the audience) lies in the mystery, the anonymity and the not knowing - when you strip it all away, what is left? Why do you think we had 5+ years of RJ as a ghost and only 10/20 minutes of him as a person? Red John is a myth. Behind it is a capable man but still just a man. You can be as smart as anything but if you're a person then you are afraid of things. Some seemingly irrational (birds), others more common (dying/death).

Xander Berkeley was a perfect choice. I wanted him or Reed Diamond to get it so I was really happy with that.

Something surely everyone can agree on...Simon Baker. Wow.

    I voted awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Yes you did genuinely read that! It was not directed as a criticism, it was only to point out the loose ends left because of bad writing. Yes BAD writing. It's not the desire to know everything my friend, but you cannot write such a shitty episode and expect viewers to enjoy it...Everyone is entitled to his opinion, you and me included. This super-smart criminal mastermind foiled by a pigeon? Are you kidding me?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Because: In a story when you close THE vilain arc story, you need to make it INTERESTING, even if you dont tell everything (like in Usual Suspect, the vilain at the end is just far enough intellingent), and Red john arc in the last episode has nothing, no spicy dialogue, no flashbacks. Nothing. It's so empty, that we were mouth wide, waiting for more food (alegory^^). All acting performances are ridicoulously thrown away in vacuum.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Red John is a cold blooded killer. He plays mind games. He is smart. He is organized. He is charismatic. He is proud of his killings. He does not deny being RJ. He does not beg for mercy or call 911. He is not a real psychic. He gives you chills, he doesn't make you laugh at him (I did watching the episode). He is not the man in 6x08.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Questions not answered (that BH created, so he should be able to answer them, especially after saying that this episode would explain things):
    - 'he is mar'
    - why did Kirland kill Lennon
    - how did RJ know about the list
    - how did McAllister become RJ and what is his motive
    - why is he suddendly an amateur/so disorganized
    - what happened to Frye
there are a lot more, but I feel the most important is why is RJ so pathetic that he has to call 911?

    ReplyDelete
  129. The issue with the reveal of Red John was, that they had 2 minutes to show us a narcissistic, arrogant Red John and then 2 minutes to show us he is just a man and a coward. And the charismatic serial killer wasn't even shown at all. That's barely enough for a case-of-the-week antagonist but for sure a huge disappointment for the main antagonist after 6 seasons.

The issue with every other suspect and many more characters was, that they gave us lots of clues and things to speculate about in 5 years, and nothing of it had any impact at all on the finale. Stiles, Haffner, Kirkland, Hightower, LaRoche etc. Nothing of their stories was in any way related to the ending. Some even just died off screen. That's very disappointing.

As a result, in case they are going to build another story arc in the future, I couldn't take it serious. I know already that nothing of it will have an impact, so there won't be any fun at all in speculating or even thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  130. The should have put some flashbacks in the episode with explanations by Red John .... like they did with Agent Smith.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I don't like the fact that a character I didn't even remember -I had to search him on the internet- is actually Red John. I wish this was a "fake" Red John like the guy in the season 3 finale. I'm VERY disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  132. This episode was such a let down!! And I am glad that I'm not the only one who thinks like that. I mean it's really like people say, you didn't have to watch the past 5 seasons to understand the last episode and there was nothing sursprising or shocking nor was it epic and what disappoints me the most is that the clues were useless. They didn't fit! Besides McAllister is way too old to be RJ. I don't care how good of an actor Xander Berkeley is, bc he can't be RJ!! We all wasted our times. 5 years just thrown away. I get why people try to stay positive, but come on people don't you see what kind of potential there was and that they've ruined it forever... just like that. I wish that there would be a huge twist like we find out that RJ isn't one of the seven suspects and it's Mashburn, which would be great bc he is very similar to PJ, he is interested in Lisbon, is charismatic and has money... or I don't know I would be even fine with Patridge even though he is not my #1 choice or Haffner I mean that would still make sense...but McAllister??? NOOO WAY! And Heller is getting away with it by saying that none of this is going to be answered and that the RJ arc is finally over. WTH???! NONE of the questions were answered. And to seriously think that I considered BH a genius. He is the worst. I hope they realize what they've done, do a hiatus and change stuff up, because right now this is pure BS!!! If they go on with this kind of stuff the show is going to be cancelled very soon.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Also forgot to mention ...

how RJ knew the list? why Kirkland Lennon killed?

    hahaha! Pure crap.

    ReplyDelete
  134. The problem is that they will excuse themselves by saying that we would be disappointed no matter what they did or something like that. I agree with you: there was a great potential. They just ruined it by chosing the worst of the 7 suspects.

    ReplyDelete
  135. We're all true fans here, that's why the comments are so passionate on both sides. Liking or disliking something doesn't make you any less of a fan. We all have our opinions, and you should respect that.

  136. Bruno's choice, we will never know.

    ReplyDelete
  137. There was no way to introduce us to Red John in just 5 minutes of screen time. 5 years and even 8 episodes for the finale but all we got was a face and name and a bit of a cliché of a chit chat in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  138. And a character we've only seen ONCE before this season.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I wish i did but I didn't find anything amazing about any of their performances..

    ReplyDelete
  146. I highly doubt Heller wrote the episode like this because he felt pressure to close it. He spoke about this since last summer so he had the time. Plus,he didn't have to do it now he had the rest of the season if needed..

And don't you think that Heller knew how he wanted to rap this up when he first started the RJ arc..

    ReplyDelete
  147. I seriously hope this was just a cop out and that red john is actually still alive

    ReplyDelete
  148. That's ok, I respect it.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I think it's not simple to write 8 episodes in... 3-4 months? Especially when you want to give closure to such a big event. That's why I'll give him credit.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I'll give him credit for 4+ years of great writing, but not these last two episodes. I think that if the FBI didn't come in and close them down it would have helped the story a great deal...Maybe i'll feel differently down the road...

I'm actually looking forward to the rest of the season. It looks like Jane & Lisbon are getting to know each other on a different level, should be interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Just so you know i did not down vote you...

    ReplyDelete
  153. I agree with what you said about Lost I think I got more answers from that show than we did about RJ and now knowing that were not gonna get any really seems like a slap in the face of the fans because part of the appeal of RJ is the mystery not just who he was but also how he did what he did and why. I just don't like the idea of never knowing. The only thing that made up for the lack luster episode was Simon's performance in the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Now that made me laugh out loud!

    ReplyDelete
  155. I'm not bitter because I'm wrong I was surprised by who RJ was I just didn't like how it felt like the story flat-lined in this episode and it just didn't seem to make any sense. For me it was like OK here ya go thats it and its over time to move on and get over your disappointment.

    ReplyDelete

I bet it was just a rushed morning no flavoured cofee in a cheap plastic cup. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Kirkland killed Lennon to silence him bc Lennon would have ratted him out to RJ (the police/or PJ)eventually. RJ knew/or worked/or trained/ or whatever with Kirklands twin brother so he would have figured out that Kirkland is looking for revenge.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Maybe he didn't care. He made his money.

    ReplyDelete
  170. This is why I don't give him credit. He said he had a plan all along. If he had a plan the episode would have been amazing. He had years to plan the end. It was half arsed and lazy.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I couldn't agree more :D

    ReplyDelete
  172. Don't worry. The mentalist turns into a soap opera next week. Sarcasm mode enabled.

  173. That women he knocked out was spotted leaving the crime scene and i have a feeling she will be back lol

    ReplyDelete
  174. It's also called fiction. ehm.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Yes they were, i believe the performances saved the episode... Especially Xander's. For what's said in the episode we don't know anything about RJ's persona. When you reveal someone like that in a book, movie or tv show you need to make sure the characters actions felt right for all the build up you made of this person.

Well, when i finished watching for a second time my tought was "Is this the person we were all scary of?", "Isn't he a regular guy?"... Red John, one of the most sadist killer i had seen or read about in fiction is a dude that talks about greatness, got scared by a pidgeon and run. run kept running, until he felt and asked for mercy like a little child. I'm sorry; i really like writing and that was really out of character. For the viewer, this person is a regular guy; a simple killer.

Xander had the acting chops and he gave RJ some dept with some good fisical acting. If it were a book it would be awefull. A character must be defined by it's actions and then for what he says.

The Red John of this episode was not consistent with the Red John we all watched for the past five years.

This has a cause and it's that the whole ending was not planed in anticipation and was rushed.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Greatest episode of the show!!. Riveting and intense. The bomb was explained (I had to know dead bodies and 3 without a mark) The voice was creepy. He is MARked. Obvious. A great balance of action, mind games, dialogue and intense finish by choking the life out of RJ. I watched the leak and the second Jane picked up his phone to Bertram I knew he didn't believe Bertram was RJ. Kept sayong Bertram. Jane knew the moment he wokeup from the blast. If I thought it was weird but it must be a red alert to him and he found out it was likely sheriff after seeing Partridge with tattoo removed. RJ so disappointed Jane knew. Heh. Jane was Jane calm and waiting since the chapel visit to hide the gun. The last scene I wayched only twice. I'm glad Patrick choked him one handed. You could feel his pain, rage, and sadness. Simon and RJ no words the scene is still stuck in my mindlike I watched a second ago. Jane running with freedom. Utterly satisfied.

. . Ppl wanting more answers would have taken the dramatic tone away and lose its effects (hello anticlimaticsm) I never for a second expected or wanted every answer. I can fill in gaps. The biggies were given. RJ is BA

Cho is my favorite guy after Jane he n acked up for him. Rigsby was a snot to his wife and fbi...They fired you and accused you grow a pair!
FEds were dicks. I hope PJ screws them. I learned calling was a crime. Abbot should pick up a RJ file and read his obsession with Jane.

Spam artists stay away from the poll

    ReplyDelete
  177. The episode firmly established without BA RJ was nothing. He manipulated thousands to help him by using BA as cover. This is how he got through computers, prisons, cops and Jane. Alone he was a coward. Completely obvious and logical. It is how I like The Mentalist. I knew the mentalist who decrees the unknown would credibly explain RJ's ability to escape for years.

For people who are hung up on not having your suspect as RJ let it go and you will freely enjoy.

Heh Jane: you're RJ. I have to say I am a little disappointed was ____ x SO fans who wanted another man.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Honestly I knew the hunt for red john was going to end poorly due to the fact CBS has made clear that this is Mentalist's final season, regardless what Heller and company may say different but by sagging ratings and CBS lack of support ,all this season I was hoping week to week CBS wouldn't nuke it till the Red John mystery was solved (like Vegas last season after CBS fell out of love) . All that being said I still feel gypped and disappointed . Maybe it would have been better if season six did not happen , Wow what a gyp this episode was.

    ReplyDelete
  181. I just can't belive this! Such a cheap, lazy, mediocre, bad episode! I must have very surprised after the epiode because of its brilliance instead of having surprised about its being a joke or not. I'm so furious... This episode is a complete insult to the fans! A big bad and master killer like RJ is begging Jane for his life! You ruined this show Bruno Heller. I'm sorry but the truth hurts. No explanation of past clues, giving a few cheap dialogues to RJ...Rj is running faster than Jane with that wound...The actor is a good choice but you even can't use him! For the past six years, we've been waiting a flashback about RJ's past but no! RJ character was send off without having been introduced to the viewers enough!. Maybe they will explain some questions but I don't care anymore. I wanted to hear them from RJ himself and in that big confrontation! What a pity! I still can't believe! This must be a joke..If you like this episode, then you're not a "Mentalist" fan...

    ReplyDelete
  182. I was satisfied with how it ended. But that's about it - satisfactory. It was not great or brilliant.

I think what we saw there at the end was more like a parody of Red John. I like how in the end he was scared to die and begged for mercy, that was actually a part I thought was well done.

This is a man who is sadistic and pure evil, agreed, but nonetheless he is someone who has accomplished some pretty massive and impressive feats of deception, manipulation and evasion, and not to forget has single-handedly created and operated a secret society of law enforcement officers for his own benefit all the while keeping his own identity secret. He has tracked down people overseas before the cops have. He not only recruited a crazy nut job from within the CBI to kill for him (Remember His Red Right Hand from season 2? That girl was obviously not Blake Association. That's a nut job like Red John and she knew who he is) but he got someone else to kill this person within custody (Although that's probably Blake Association's work.) He even convinced Kristina Frye that she was dead. He is someone who takes a great sense of pride in his work - he killed Jane's family in response to what he considered slander; he killed those copy cat killers who basically worshiped him because he did not like cheap imitation. He is powerful enough to scare Bret Stiles - although they never really showed how they are connected. He convinced another serial killer to pose as him and go talk to Jane. He orchestrated elaborate, ingenious moves just to have a conversation with Jane. And best of all, he figured out each and every name on Jane's suspect list.

Some of these questions were answered and some of these we can answer ourselves with the information we were provided over the course of this season. But the most burning questions were never answered and put aside with Jane saying, "They're just details." No, they're not. This entire hunt was catalyzed because of that list. It's the most important piece of information in the hunt for Red John and how he got that list deserves an explanation than just "It's details."

It's one thing to seduce sociopaths into his ways but how did he brainwash Kristina into having Cotard delusion while conveniently forgetting any and every detail about Red John?

  183. McAllister was my guess when they first showed the list of suspects last season. I did not know which character he played, I just looked at the pics and thought who I would pic to be Red John but went back and found which character each one played and thought, "Ok. No way this guy's Red John" but decided not to make any other guesses because no other option seemed...right. :D

  184. Nah. Jane is out for revenge, but he's not sadistic. That red smiley on his wall is not there out of nostalgia. I bet it's there to make sure he never forgets his life's mission. My guess is that the connection he has to that symbol is that of sadness and regret and disgust. To draw that smiley with Red John's blood, that does not seem right for the character.

  185. Have questions that burn in the back of your head? Ever wonder:

-What does "he is mar" mean?
-What is the connection between Red John and Visualize?
    -What happened to Kristina Frye?

  186. RNN breaking news flash!!!!! At least 507 CBS employees have been reported to answer online internet polls. More to follow as the story progresses, or until they delete my comment and remove the right to free speech.

  187. Sorry to see you we're on LSD Sunday . I didn't see that episode . Just a cheap hack job by a creator tried and out of ideas. This was terrible episode, up there with the end of Forever night, stienfled and lost to name a few. This gyp job both sucks and blows.

  188. No I agree this episode was a gyp and a hack job of the highest order. Just lately CBS has been pissing away excellent show with ghastly bad writing. Csi ny, Miami, without a trace, and episodes of Vegas come to mind. So although disappointed , I
Am not shock at the sh!tty ending.

  189. Yep 507 LSD droppers and CBS executives post hear , who knew . LoL

  190. Absolutely correct! I didn't like Bertram as RJ. McAllister, and the coward he was, makes sense. Hiding behind his secret society. He was smart, and a sociopath, but that doesn't mean he's not scared and a wus. People who hurt women and children often are.

  191. Awsome episode but totally disappointed by the on of RJ. I mean what a joke really that's it? After all this time? What a BS.

  192. Yes fans are entitles to their own opinion, but it would be foolish & stupid to say that "Red John" was awful! I really couldn't have thought of a better way to end the Red John saga..can you? 99% of Jane's actions were true to his nature including throttling Red John to death..it was an immensely personal & intimate way of killing a person and is what Jane required to finally get closure for his family's demise. All credit to Bruno Hellar for not sticking to the oft used finale strategies where characters don't behave according their nature (in most finales people start acting strange..Dexter is a well known case).

  193. You're deluded.

  194. CBS employees must be the ones voting "Awesome". This was an abominable mess.

  195. I agree he should have been humanized, but the pigeon was a bit much :P

  196. It is indeed. You can be a fan and you can't like an episode, it's normal.
Anyone who says "I'm done with the Red John saga" and then stops watching the show, that's not a real fan of The Mentalist.
TM is not about Red John.

  197. People who are defending the episode, saying that there will be explanations in the course of the season ...

His fools, the Red John arc in this episode ended, no further explanation is just ... The Mentalist 2.0 from now.

    Description Rosalind?
    Michael Kirkland?
    Connecting to the Visualize?
    Why Red John killed Partridge?
    Flashbacks?
    The voice?

    NO!

    this is crap.

The biggest disappointment I've ever had in a séries.

    Have a nice day!
