  1. I thought it was really good. Most Pilot episodes to me aren't that great, but I thought this one was. Hope the ratings are good because as expected, this one is a keeper for me.

  2. I liked it, the initial draw wad Karl Urban but I love Dorian. Look forward to watching the John/Dorianpartnership develop

  3. I enjoyed it. I'm like the chemistry between both Kennex and Dorian and Kennex and Maldonado. Not to sure about the supporting cast yet. The Doctor guy seems ok right now, but I'd like to see him interact with character's other then Kennex and Dorian. Minka Kelly's character seems ok as well, but they haven't really done anything with her yet. All i see every time she's on screen is Lyla Garrity with a gun, which doesn't totally sit right with me yet :)

Kennex is fantastic. Karl Urban is one of my favorite actors and he play Kennex well. Dorian is also a surprise. I expected him to be comic relief and fun from the trailers but he's played seriously and is extremely interesting.

Plot of this episode was actually really well done. I like how much they introduced but didn't explain. There was no needless exposition of the types of guns (like the skin one that went over Vogel's face) or the various other types of technology, which I enjoyed because it made it seem more real. Special effects are pretty good and the face melting was a bit gruesome, which is a good thing.

Interested to see the numbers, but more interested to see how the numbers for "Skin" will do tomorrow. Hope the big NFL game tonight doesn't do any damage to the show's numbers.

  4. Much better than expected. It didn't feel as procedural as has been advertised these past few weeks. Really nice visuals, well executed, likable characters and a lot of 'Fringe' characteristics, despite being more action packed. Can't wait to learn more about The Insyndacate! Also really liked the score!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Quite enjoyed this too. Was concerned that all the sneak peaks were going to basically be all the good parts of the episode. Am a bit concerned because of the network it is on, but yeah.. quite enjoyable.

  6. I was looking forward to this show so much and it did not disappoint! It had that Robocop feel to it which is awesome.

I already love the partnership between John/Dorian. I can't wait to see it progress more in the weeks to come.

I also loved the Fringe reference with the way Vogel's face melted. That was nice.

The visuals were actually pretty great for a TV show. I was definitely surprised by that.

All in all, I really loved the premiere! Definitely going to stick with it.

  7. If Almost Human can pull in what Sleepy Hollow got that would be nice.

  8. So far i'm loving it.Its much better than i expected, and i'm ooking forward to tomorrows episode. Now back to Homeland!

  9. I liked it quite a bit, but I'm a sucker for Dystopian Sci-Fi...

The premise of clandestine crime syndicates using weapons beyond the ken of the police reminds me a lot of FRINGE in all the good ways.

Something felt lacking to me. At times I felt the series was lacking a little warmth.... The cold color palate, the cold synthetics, the cold human interactions...it left me wanting at times. Although, Since the priority of the pilot was to set a tone for the series, I think they were successful and the series can add color and warmth literally and figuratively as it progresses.

Fringe even at its darkest had warm connections between the characters and I think the series will develop relationships in a similar fashion. Kennex and Dorian have already broken the ice and their Captain Maldonado seemed to have real affection for Kennex. I guess Minka Kelly's Valerie Stahl had something for Kennex too, but I'm not sure it was just affection! XD

All the cast seemd to pla ytheir parts well to me as expected. Fairly talented cast all around, but both KArl Urban and Michael Ealy shined for me! Urban plays those brooding heroes so well and feels like a great anchor to the series. I have seen Ealy in many projects, but did not know exactly what to expect from this role as a synthetic.. I think he hit the perfect tone as just quirky enough to be believable as a robot that was supposed to feel and appear human-like.

AS pilots go I thought it was great
I do think it needs to develop the characters and world more, but that can come over time. I just hope it evolves fast enough for non-SciFi fans to really be drawn in.

    ETA:
Anyone else expect a British accent and scarred face when the head terrorist turned around?
He certainly has a very David Robert Jones feel to him.

  10. A Crystal Method score and Depeche Mode featured on the soundtrack. Ya, that was nice!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Somehow I'm expecting very big ratings for the premiere (for, among others things, being a JJ Abram stuff, having Urban in it and the 'unique' style of this show), but I'm fearing for a drop in the next weeks, just hoping it will keep his quality and his audience.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Exactly.
We really cannot read too much into the premiere numbers unless they are surprisingly low. In the recent past there have been a number of Sc-Fi series premiering with huge numbers that dropped fast after a few weeks.

Wait and see... and hope! XD

    ReplyDelete
  13. I miss Flash Forward :(

    ReplyDelete
  14. And tomorrows opening theme was/is written by JJ Abrams. Crystal Method signed on to score the music for the series.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I was hoping we might get some New Wave numbers from Wyman! -But the Crystal Method coming on score is a pretty awesome thing, I think XD

    ReplyDelete
  16. Your right about it lacking warmth, but i also think that will change. It started at the end between Kennex and Dorian. They also need to add some warmth to the interior,it will be interesting to see how they accomplish that?

Good start for the show.I would be surprised if it doesn't make it...

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm definitely in, great pilot

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ya,it didn't feel like a procedural.I was pleasantly surprised by how much i was enjoying it!

  19. I really loved the Pilot !! gonna keep watching next week !

    ReplyDelete
  20. Actually I like that it is cold. Perhaps this might be what seperates it from shows you are already familar with. indeed it could also be intentional on the shows behalf. I think the show was successful in that it made us empathise with Dorian over Kennex.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't forget there is another episode tomorrow night at 8 pm.

    ReplyDelete
  22. really !? wow thanks ! i didn't know ! :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Very good opening ep for this show. Nicely written with great performances delivered. Great chemistry between the leads and a good open to what will be the mytharc of the show... reminded me of Alien Nation/I Robot/Fringe, but that is a good thing and am looking forward to the next ep!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Your welcome! Starting tomorrow will be their regular night,Bones is now on Friday night.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It really did not feel too much like a procedural, but that might come yet...

Pilots have so much to accomplish that they often times have a less procedural element, a different feeling and rhythm to them than the rest of the episodes.

I will be interested to see how the rest of the episodes shape up!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Personally, I don't mind that it was cold either. It is common for dystopian futuristic series and movies to be cold like that to help express the feeling of hopelessness and all around bleakness, or in this case a world filled with less humanity and more technology.

I'm just not sure that darkness and coldness will keep the less traditional genre fans watching. I think it needs to find that balance to be a successful series.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm hoping it's planned and they wanted us to feel the cold before it get warmer. When we watch others cop shows, you always see the partners chatting and having fun with their partner, talking about random stuff and joking. Here, with partner as cold and sitting in the back of the chair, not saying a word unless you're talking about the case, I have a feeling it really doesn't help the average cop to be very chatty and warm, even with the others humans around when they're at work.

Maybe Dorian and John's relationship (maybe having some laugh in the cop station one day), will push the others (the humans one) cops to start talking to each other

Good start. Very much a cross between Fringe and a buddy cop drama. Urban was good as expected but Ealy was a pleasurable surprise. A good mix.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If Dorian is from a decommissioned series that were 'too' human, then it could stand for reason that somewhere down the line Dorian and Kennex could encounter DRN models that have been taken by the Syndicate/ others to be used for nefarious purposes. That could lend itself to some very interesting face off style situations (Im not advocating it be overused).

  30. The captain is hiding something.........we should know more as we continue to progress through the season

    ReplyDelete
  31. According to these other comments, I'm in the minority. I had certain expectations for this pilot, and I was disappointed. My reasons:

    - So tired of the whole "disgraced/retired cop pulled back into service and being reluctant about it" story. Why can't we see a cop ever getting back into duty and being happy and embracing it? Or better yet, seeing a long-time proud and established cop being introduced to new territory in his job? This type of pulled-back-into-service-and-reluctant storyline is getting old, and I was predicting this type of story long before the show had its premiere, which is never a good thing (at least not for me). I like surprising and twisting storylines, and this episode just did not deliver it.

    - It took almost 20 minutes for us to even meet the second main character. That's almost proof for me that this show is going to be progressing slowly, and taking its sweet time to get anywhere. I like fast-paced stories where literally anything can happen in the matter of a single episode. This pilot did not at any point captivate my interest and several times it made me want to switch to another series. That's not exactly a smashing pilot.

    - At around the 25-minute mark, I started skipping through the rest of the episode to find anything good. What I found was a scene where the droids are all attacked through some machine. Granted, in our age, hackers can gain control of anything, but if they manage to completely bring down half of the entire police force in the pilot episode, then I feel like these droids are way too vulnerable.

I will, however, give the show major credits for outstanding special effects! The effects used were truly excellently made.

I usually tune in to at least 3 or 4 episodes before I make my decision on whether or not to stay with a series, but honestly, this show disappointed me on such a major level. And that's really sad for me, because I was really having my bets on loving this.

So, yeah, very nicely tried FOX, but you frankly disappointed me :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. It was pretty good I think.. For me, Sleepy Hollow and The Blacklist are still the best dramas of the season but AH was pretty good too! Good job FOX both of your new shows are good this time! Sunday ratings gonna be good I'm sure about that but Monday ratings are more important IMO.. Hope they got good ratings!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Responding to a couple of your points...
I took what you saw as "disgraced cop forced into returning to the job" as something different. I saw it as traumatized man unable to move on which is as realistic or more realistic than a cop or soldier going through an event like that and being gung ho to get back to the job. More than that though, it is the very center of the entire series.

That traumatic event in his past is the foundation for the entire series. It illustrates the man versus technology issue - The humanity of saving your partner at any cost versus the programming of playing the odds without caring for any one human in specific.

It also touches on one of the other themes of trusting humanity or technology. Kennex always hated the synthetics and blamed them for his friend's death, the loss of his leg and everything else that went down during the ambush. In the pilot he learns that the woman he has been longing for and obsessing over could in fact be responsible (in part) for the ambush and the synthetic was not at fault. He sees that the monsters he has hated were just doing their jobs and the humanity he loved betrayed him.

It throws everything he knows, or thought he knew, out the window.

As for the rest of your comments, I really cannot respond. You missed the context and story of the second half of the episode by skimming through it. That was, as it generally is, the real meat of the story, so you are judging by first impressions of characters and stories that were not even remotely fleshed out yet.

I will say though that it was anything but slow paced as pilots go. They had a case of the week and it was solved. They laid groundwork for the two main characters and they showed the environment of the series, the broad strokes of what the world has come to in 2048. The also had a twist (something you say you are looking for) that changed the protagonist on a fundamental level. Not many pilots do more than that in 43 minutes.

That said, if you did not enjoy it then you did not enjoy it and I will not tell you that you should have! We all enjoy different things.

    ReplyDelete
  34. While the points you bring up are valid and change my perception of the show, it still did not excite me enough to watch the show any further. I think that the bottom groundwork and idea I had for this show was a futuristic cop thriller, while the show, according to your description, deals more with the questions regarding humans vs robots and which one deals with situations better. I honestly don't want to watch a show about someone suffering from a traumatizing experience as I am in that situation myself and I want my TV shows to help me dive into a different universe and not one that resembles my real life.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Possible for sure.
Who knows, maybe he saw a DRN model of his ex-girlfriend with Insyndicate?
With this level of tech on the series it almost feels like the synths could be this show's shapeshifters.

  36. Christian, There is nothing in the Feedback system about The Simpsons.

We don't do polls for shows that don't get a minimum number of votes. We used to do polls for The Simpsons but once it falls below a minimum number of votes each week we stop doing the polls. There were no comments and very little votes so it's not worth our time.

In future if you have a suggestion or complaint please use the Feedback forms.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, it's not for everyone.
    Different strokes and all that...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Alright. Some announcement of that would have been appreciated. After all, there are polls for shows in their freshman seasons that get polls and thus I found it weird that TV's longest-running scripted show didn't. Also, I used the Contact form, not Feedback form, but thanks, now I know that in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  39. All shows get 1 or 2 polls when they are new to see how popular they are. If a show gets more than the minimum number of votes then we continue posting the polls. It's been that way for 2 years now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Id hope they would go with Model X looks all the same, Model DRN looks all the same. If they start flipping around what models can look like, then it gets a little too shapeshiftery.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As long as they establish some pattern to the various models I will be ok with it. Each version could have a few sub-models and I wouldn't mind at all.

The thing that made me think of shifters was that it looked like the Insyndicate might be modifying the appearance of a synth. Changing an original model by doing some facial construction. Maybe it was just accessing data, but I thought of re-purposing an old model by refacing it to be a sleeper agent of a sort.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have been concerned with any show I like on Fox, they do have history of messing shows up. lol
    I loved the ep.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ya!! We'll see how it feels tonight, if things from the Pilot take a back seat or not, but I can't wait so I can finish my review and analysis! Should be posted Wed! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree and even felt good about Sandra and John's relationship. -I think though, kind of like POI, we may have some sleeper agents or moles, (Richard Paul is such a jerk already!) so I'm kind glad it's not to warm and fuzzy yet, because I think there is an element of Dystopian in that I'm not sure if John and/or DRN can trust most people (especially since John didn't know that his girlfriend was apart of a terrorist organization!!)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think they picked up something that didn't flesh out on Fringe. Like you said it looks like they can create "digital model heads" and the tattoos the group has on the back of their neck has to be a direct shout out to Newton!

I'm thinking Stahl and/or Paul are androids.I think if Kennex is an android, it will be a reveal for much later...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sweet!! I forgot your reviewing this! :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Why can't we see a cop ever getting back into duty and being happy and embracing it?

But don't we? DRN wants to be a cop more than anything after being out of service for four years XD!. Now Kennex really isn't disgraced, is he? It's really only the psychologist (Tiller?) and Richard Paul that seem to have a problem with him being there. Although reluctant, I think it's pretty obvious John cares about saving lives and a lot of his reservations are just out of fear.

    ReplyDelete
  48. When I first heard of the show I wasn't expecting a whole lot really. The idea of a cop with a robot partner didn't strike me as that good an idea. But I'd decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did. I think it deserves an 'A' rating. Can't think of anything to complain about and I'll be watching it tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anyone else sick of tough guy cops who need help with their feelings?

    ReplyDelete
  50. While it's your right to give this fast, I think you could try at least a couple more episodes to see what an ''average'' episode looks like and not just the pilot made to introduce and present the characters. Without the need to introduce the charaters, maybe you'll see ''surprising and twisting storylines''. You couldn't expect them to do everything and a huge, complex and extremely hard 'case of the week'

It's really rare the pilot who are just 'Wow'. My two favorites series took a lot of episodes to get me hook, totally normal to have a more or less slow start.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I absolutely loved it! Really digging the dystopian future setting and the interaction between the two main characters. Urban and Ealy knocked it out of the park!

Haven't seen enough of the other characters to really pas judgment, though I loved the police captain fighting alongside the rest of the cops!

I admit to being skeptical of this when I first heard about it, but the promo's and now the episode itself makes me feel we have something great here!

Was anyone else expecting that Walter Bishop could come plopping out of a wormhole at any moment? xD

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ya! when John and Dorian went into the 'Hotel i was expecting to see Walter walking down the hall looking at each door trying to remember which room Michael was in...

    ReplyDelete
  53. ""Was anyone else expecting that Walter Bishop could come plopping out of a wormhole at any moment? xD"

Ha, ya for sure! :) The MX models are SO Observer-esqu along with the familiarity of the horror left behind by the these "patterns" of crime, it's def hard not think of all things FRINGE :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I always really like the old apartment building interior aesthetic! It always kept things grounded in reality, despite also being at times surreal (because of things that go on there!). There was also a lot of Red-Blue contrasts! I'm glad it didn't feel too different from FRINGE.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Me too! So much of what i saw last night was 'Fringe' reminiscent. Many people kept warning us it wasn't Fringe, and it isn't Fringe, yet it has the same feel (so far). Must be a Wyman,Abrams thing!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ya well it's SO funny, because The Abrams himself kept "advertising" that it runs completely different...Obviously that could change even with tonight's episode, but the Pilot was SO Fringey, I don't know how any fan couldn't feel it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. The thing is, I believe a pilot episode is supposed to make me want to come back, whereas this show was so far from my expectations and so far from the things I like about a show, that it is making me not wanting to stay at all. I even skipped through the second half of the episode. A lot of people may like it, but I found it dreadful, I found it embarrassing of FOX to give this show the Monday night line-up and I am sure I will be hated for this, but I hope it flops in the ratings. I already feel like I wasted time watching the first 25 minutes of the pilot that I could have spent watching the new The Simpsons episode. Normally a pilot at least makes me watch 2 or 3 episodes, but not this one. It made me want to quit watching immediately. That just isn't a good pilot, at least to me.

    ReplyDelete
  58. ME! ME! PICK ME! PICK ME! :p

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes! The tech felt so very fringy! Is that even a word? lol

    ReplyDelete
  60. The whole episode gave such a Fringe vibe, I almost thought it was a sequel to Fringe!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Best JJ Abrams (involved) pilot since Fringe. Good music, nice... atmosphere. Solid acting. Will definitely be watching next week.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Not all pilots are great, some shows take many episodes to found his strides. But if you hate it that much, it still no reason to want it to 'flop', why does it change in your life wheter it has good ratings (and a long life ) or not? Not such a great attitude to have to say the least. If people like it and like where it's going, if it's given some people a good time, whising for their shows to crash is pretty much wishing for those people to be sad and hurt.

Never understood the ''I just hope show XYZ dies'', it's just TV shows. If you hate it, don't watch and it's like it won't exist for you. Are you jealous or something that people like it and that's why you want them to be sad if their show crash and die?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love this show and it was only one episode so far. So happy another is tonight!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. OK, this qualifies a longer reply.

First off, TV shows are not just TV shows anymore. TV series are global entertainment franchises, and TV has such an incredible power in people's lives that it can actually alter their lifespans. I have been depressed from a traumatizing experience a few years back, and have repeatedly had suicidal thoughts. When Under the Dome had its premiere, it literally kept me alive waiting each week for a new episode at a time that I did not find much to live for. TV is not just entertainment any longer, it has become a major part of people's everyday lives. We feel with the characters, we dive into alternative universes and it has a tremendous effect on how we interact with those around us. That said, there are shows that should be cancelled, the best example I have is Two and a Half Men, where the show can actually cause people to be depressed. I may have been a tad too rough on this show when I wished it would flop since it was just the pilot, and I take that back, but basically, Almost Human is not a very good television show, in my opinion. It tries to depict how life is at 2048, but the show's premise seems to be a cliched plot of a cop traumatized from a bad experience where he acted wrongfully, and then how he has to work with an android-like cop and the partnership starts bad but ends up good in the end. It's an old cliche, it's overused, and despite the fact that I am sure the show will do great, there was nothing particularly unique about it except for how one of them is partially a robot. It's basically an Odd Couple pairing, and it's been done thousands of times before.

When you describe it as "don't watch and it's like it won't exist for you" is just ignorant of you to say. You do realize TV shows cost a lot of production money, and this money could be spent elsewhere? And the fact that there are large billboards, commercials and other material promoting the show?

Those who had zero expectations for this show were probably pleasantly surprised. Those who had certain expectations, which includes me and 3 friends that I have talked to that also watched last night, were disappointed (frankly, one of them even despised it). The plot and concept was fantastic, but the series went in a completely different, boringly uncreative direction.

One final thing, you cannot think that just because someone doesn't like a show, they automatically hate everyone who watch it and want them to die sad and alone. That's not the reality. The truth is, we just don't like a show. I couldn't care less whether those who like it are sad or happy about the show. Therefore, implying that I personally want people to be sad is just wrong. Go to the Facebook page for The Simpsons, people everywhere write that they want the show to end. Do you think they automatically hate everyone who watch it? No, it's not personal, it's just a matter of what we think is quality TV. Do you hate Honey Boo Boo or do you hate everyone who watches it? People don't generally hate each other for liking a show, they hate the show in subject.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The next episode is tonight in case you didn't know.

  66. It's kind of fun to see what kind of community there is on STV nowadays. Comparing it to other sites that use DISQUS, this is one of the few websites I have found where people are literally clinging on the downvote button, often people getting spammed with downvotes for no valid reason (frequent commentators will know what I mean). While other sites people have a fair argumentation, here the dislike button is a silent way of trolling, and even better, a private way to do it with no fear of getting your identity exposed. Not sure I like how DISQUS handles their role in commenting any longer. They show who upvotes, but not who downvotes, and that's like asking for people to troll each other with downvotes. Gotta say this is one area Facebook truly does everything right with by not having a dislike button.

  67. That missing head being the evidence is so stolen from Fringe Vault lol

    ReplyDelete
  68. I believe we witnessed a Fringe Memory lol

    ReplyDelete
  69. Let's not forget bout the Head being recovered from the evidence also a reference to Fringe lol

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think you took some said I said out of proportion. I never said that anyone who doesn't like a show want it to be cancel and hate everybody who watch it. Don't twist my words. I said I never understood the people wanting a show to die, including you, hoping for a show to end just because they don't like it. You can not like it and just move on to other thing and just not care about the show anymore. There's always shades like some people watching SPN going ''I wish the show would've end at S5 cause that was the idea at first and the ending was perfect'', which is understandable in the context, but just a small part of it are continuing ''Now I want it to burn cause I don't watch it anymore''. You didn't choose the best exemple with a 25+ years cartoons, of course there's gonna be more people tired of it, Some are just not thinking about the others people.

''When you describe it as "don't watch and it's like it won't exist for you" is just ignorant of you to say. You do realize TV shows cost a lot of production money, and this money could be spent elsewhere? And the fact that there are large billboards, commercials and other material promoting the show?''

What are you even talking about? It's so not the point. We were talking about you. As far as I know, you're not working for FOX and no ones is pointing a gun at your head to oblige you to watch it. If you hate as much as you say, don't watch. I simply said nobody is making you watch as long as it exist, you can decide to not watch the show and the show can still exist wihout you. It won't change anything in your life if show lives 2 years or 10. That's all I said. FOX people know about how much the show cost (production, pub and all) and will do their job about the rest and cancel it when it need to, no matter if you watch it or not. Let them worry about their shows and their money, they'll do it even if you stop watching theirs shows.

If you're going to miss my points on purpose and turn everything I said, there's no point in continuing this conversation

    ReplyDelete
  71. "It won't change anything in your life if show lives 2 years or 10. That's all I said."

If you're going to state factually incorrect sentences like that, and not even appear like you are trying to understand my reasoning, then there's no point in continuing this conversation. Either way, I am so done with this entire thread by now. I stated my opinion and I am now going to spend my time elsewhere. Goodbye.

  72. I thought it was great. I usually don't love pilots crazily right away but there was a lot to like here. The leads were great and the potential in that future setting is enormous. Production was very well done and the chemistry between the leads was also spot on. Did not disappointed me at all, it matched my expectations! Voted awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ya! It def feels like I'm watching the same show, but with a different cast!
