Whoa, POI promises to be a great episode. The clip with Joss was really intense! Why are we having such a problem with posting comments on the site today?
SHIELD, Goldbergs, and Trophy Wife for me. Anyone know if Root is off of Person of Interest yet? I'm putting it on hiatus until she is and then I will marathon all her episodes together to get through them quickly.
Should it matter? With all respect, go ahead and miss it tonight. These 3 episodes are going to be really big and really good and if Root is in them, then so be it. I really don't get what all the sudden hatred of Root is about this season. I understand the hate for Shaw. Her personality sucks and makes her a hard person to tolerate. But Root is still great. Why do you dislike Root so much? I would honestly like to know so that I can attempt to understand why she's suddenly hated this season (that isn't sarcastic. I really would like to know why). I'm sorry if the tone of this comment is harsh. I'm just mad this season because people seem to have a new hatred for parts of the show that I think are fantastic and I really don't get what it's all about.
I disliked Root from the beginning so it's not a new thing for me. I find the character way over the top and I feel like if Amy Acker hadn't been portraying her, the character would be dead already. I dislike when a guest actor, even one I like as much as Acker, drives a story because people want the actor to stay. I also agree with DarqueMode that this season is not as good. I miss Fusco a lot and I feel that by opening up the players, the show has lost its intimacy. However, I loved Zoe so I would have taken her over Shaw and especially Root any day.
I love Zoe too! I would rather have had her promoted to a series regular than Shaw any day. And I agree with both you and Darque, this season isn't as good as the first two seasons..
I think I would have been more okay with seeing more of Shaw via the COTW like we learned about guest stars last year. We learned a lot about Elias that way and it was awesome. Having her make trigger-happy comments does very little for me.
As for Root I think I am just completely against having her as a major player honestly. The character is so over-the-top that her charm gets old fast, much too fast with repeated lengthy exposure. I also think I would have enjoyed seeing her work against someone other than directly against Team Machine. Having Root go after the mysterious "Ma'am", the British faction or Vigilance etc.
While I don't mind Shaw, she is more flat as a character and definitely more dark. Part of the issue I think I am having is that some episodes have gotten far more dark than the first 2 seasons. They are unable to protect the numbers now and e had Reese giving the married couple his gun so they can shoot each other. It feels like the showrunners want a grittier season, which is perfectly fine. However it isn't working for me along with the other changes. I think Zoe would have added more light to the story while still being a pertinent member of the team. She is also a less force-driven character and more of a creative-thinking and clever character. I tend to like those better because you can realistically write more innovative cases of the week for those characters.
Elias was a brilliant, multi-layered character that they really did justice to, partly because as you said, they took time to do so. Shaw and Root are much flatter and as such do not resonate with me as well. I guess I have more patience with Shaw because her appearance almost always means an action scene, which I enjoy. For her, the less dialogue the better it seems. The constant no emotion, kill it dialogue is tired already, but Root's hypersmart obsession is worse. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the acting and writing are way over the top, so much so that it irks me every time she is on. Root is bordering on comic book villain at this point.
I have some news. There was no Root in tonight's episode, so you guys can watch it. I do agree that the dynamic of the show has changed from the first 2 seasons. What hasn't changed, however, are the story lines. They are still great with unexpected twist after twist. So if you can get past the changed dynamic of the POI team, then it's still really really good.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
