Person of Interest - Episode 3.08 - Endgame - Review: The Joss Carter Show

Nov 14, 2013

WARNING - MAJOR SPOILERS WITHIN. ONLY READ IF YOU HAVE WATCHED THE EPISODE.

After Carter's shocking discovery last week, the beginning of HR's demise brought about all kinds of problems for the band of heroes. While Carter has taken the boss, there's still one last person yet to be taken down: Officer Patrick Simmons.

I loved Carter's heightened role in this episode - particularly her ease at breaking the law to gain what she wanted. This side of Carter has been slowly brewing since she rescued Elias from HR, and it's nice to see it finally spill over the top. Joss Reese (and no, I don't mean they got married, before any of you start hoping).

Speaking of Elias, it was nice to see him back, and out of his dingy 'home'. Casual as he always was, I want to see more of him. That said, working with Carter is the only way I'll like him. His hatred towards both the Russians and HR makes for a useful sidestory, even if the HR story ends in two episodes time.

Back to Carter. Going rogue was a fantastic moment for her, yet despite her request that Reese leave her alone, he was still ready to help in her time of need. The interaction between these two is fantastic (see fist bump last week), something that has changed dramatically since season one.

It was nice to see her team up with Shaw (even temporarily). The two, in their normal personalities, are the complete antithesis of each other. Carter, a cop at heart, follows the law. Shaw has little regard for the law, and has a fondness for shooting people. However, Carter's changed ideals made these two a good match for each other. Perhaps the two can have more scenes together.

As for Reese's side of things, he is becoming like a Machine-less version of Root. He always seems to know what's going to happen, and when he needs to intervene. Obviously the Machine has some part in this, but Reese seems to have turned into this omnipotent being. It's nice. As for his opinion towards people stealing his grenade launcher... That was the funniest part of the episode, perhaps even the season.

Carter's scene with Fusco outside the precinct was brilliant. I loved how, despite trust issues in the past, Carter still has total faith in "the best partner (she) ever had". Her abandonment of him wasn't surprising, and done purely for his benefit. She has the perfect mix of compassion and anger, and never mixes the two.

I enjoyed seeing Taylor's father. There has been little revealed about him in the past, so although we haven't seen everything, we've seen the basic important bits about the story.

While it was to be expected that the Judge was in with Quinn, I didn't expect Carter's counter-ploy against them. Although Reese took out two members of HR, and he and Carter made off with Quinn, Simmons survived. Despite Reese's tendency to shoot important things, he failed to shoot the police camera. As of next week, he is in for a lot of trouble.

Other bits:
  • It was harsh of Reese and Finch to assume that Shaw was behind the attack on the Russian truck. But it was funny though. And it reminded us that Shaw has no friends outside the other four. Sad times for Shaw.
  • Did Bear ever get that protective vest?
  • How much money did Finch have to spend on photo paper in this episode? There must have been upwards of 60 pictures on that board in the end.
  • "Once we save the bad Russians from the bad cops, what exactly are we gonna do with them?"
  • "The man in the suit dies tonight."
By far the best episode of the season. It's pushing for the best episode of the show. I loved every second of it, and I can't wait for next week. 10/10

With such a short review, I thought I'd present my theory for the next two episodes.

While every criminal in New York is trying to kill Reese, Carter manages to get Quinn to some sort of law enforcement (most likely the FBI). Obviously, without a warrant, she is going to be in trouble, but it won't last too long. Simmons, in an attempt to draw out Reese and get Quinn back, kidnaps Fusco and threatens to kill him. When Carter gets wind of this, she makes Reese stay back and not come after her, which after some argument, he agrees to do. She trades herself for Fusco's life, and Simmons, seeing she is without Quinn, refuses to let Fusco go, vowing to kill them both. Reese comes in, manages to save Fusco, but Carter is killed in the crossfire by Simmons, who escapes. Episode 10 follows Reese's pursuit of revenge against HR, and with the help of Fusco and Shaw, he takes out all surviving members of HR. He's left with a final showdown against Simmons, who is killed by Fusco, as he proceeds to say, "For Carter."

Promo for next week. This looks awesome. And potentially very, very sad.

  1. Great review! Thanks :) and also great theory although it will suck to lose someone of the core four :(

  2. Nice review! I loved this episode, definitely my fave of the entire series so far. About your theory, I do think something similar will happen. Carter is my favorite character, and it saddens me to even think it, but I definitely think she will be the one that dies.

  3. Yep, I'm not happy about losing someone either. But the show will progress from it.

  4. I still have the hunch that Fusco will die. It's a mix-up between the two though. No one else of the 'heroes' will die.

  5. Nice review but a dark prediction. ..
My guess is ,they won't kill any of the main characters on the show

That being said this is the best season ever
Poi is the only show that has gotten better each year while not going over the top. .

Amazing one liners in this episode

I was glad to see finally Carter knew when to seek help and her execution of the plan was brilliant

    This episode was mind blowing

  6. The EP has said that someone we love (i.e. a main cast member) will die. It's gonna be Fusco or Carter. I just think it'll be Carter.

Agreed, this is the best season yet.

  7. Carter? No way.
The showrunners would be monumentally insane to voluntarily retire her! Remember, this is still all about business...
TPH brings in an important audience demo, the reason that the CBS Exec Nina Tassler "requested" the creators give her a bigger role in Season 1.

No, it won't be Carter unless TPH herself has asked to get out of her contract...and I don't think that's going to happen either: she's a terrific actress and has indicated in too many interviews how much she really enjoys the role to walk away now.

  8. Then that leaves us with poor Fusco to die.

  9. I think your theory is spot on, which sucks so bad because I absolutely love the character of Joss Carter. I'm dreading the next episodes because I have enjoyed watching this character grow and change so much over the past three seasons. I don't think I'll be able to keep watching the show without Carter because she was such an important part of my enjoyment of it.

  10. I'm the opposite. Although I'm dreading the thought of Carter's death, I love these massive, game-changing episodes. They bring out the best of the show.

  11. Same! Honestly, only started watching for TPH and fell in love with her character immediately as well as her dynamic with John. I love all the characters though, so I won't say I won't watch anymore if she dies, but I won't be as enthused to watch as I usually am.

  12. Wonderful review, Bradley, but I think you are wrong on your theory, I feel poor Fusco is going to die.

  13. Perhaps. But then, I doubt the show is the kind to tell us about the main character who dies in the promos.

  14. Not sure any of the main characters will die.
    http://www.buddytv.com/articles/person-of-interest/person-of-interest-season-3-sp-51537.aspx
implies that the core 4, Shaw, Root, and Bear will evolve throughout the Season.
Nolan said "The Battle of HR will not come without loss" However they also said
"To Save Mr. Reese, a Hero will make the ultimate sacrifice." Ultimate sacrifice being?

  15. Ultimate sacrifice = death. http://www.tvguide.com/News/Person-of-Interest-Fusco-Death-Jonathan-Nolan-1073272.aspx

  16. I looked it up. I didn't know it was a term for war hero. That's really too bad.
I don't want any of the good guys to die. I agree with what someone said when
they said it would be appropriate for Fusco to takedown Simmons.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yep. As I said in my prediction. Especially after the conversation he and Carter had outside the precinct, him being the one to avenge her death (if it is Carter that dies) would be fitting.

  18. I think Carter's ex Paul is a dead man walking. I think he will die heroically, possibly protecting Taylor and/or Joss. All the rest is trolling by Nolan.

I think something bad will gone down amongst the Core Four that will cause a little fracturing, but honestly, we're been teased with that before and then it was hand-waved away.

I think that Root will find some way to start a fire and escape from the library, Or -- Finch will release her, which will be the source of the tension mentioned above. Especially if she then kills someone.

Best case, Shaw gets killed saving one of the Core Four. But that's probably just wishful thinking.

  19. BTW if you google "buddy tv 'Person of Interest' Season 3 Spoilers: Shaw's Backstory, The Machine's Plan, Fusco's Story and More" it appears that Shaw is not the one to fall. There's a story to tell about her and Bear. So also not Beear. Also seems possible it's not Fusco. The writers can fool us with some twists. You comment about Paul is a possibly: we find from his past that he is a war hero. And he will be the loss (The fight to bring down HR will not come without loss). Or that Fusco asks to die (the ultimate sacrifice) and is shot but Carter had told him in ep8 to wear a vest (detectives normally don't wear the vests ref ep1 Get Carter), he survives and gets to kill Simmons or Quinn. Sigh. The old Hollywood formula for a sucessful movie is to have a happy ending e.g. 1961 Breakfast at Tiffany's they modifed the ending so that the guy gets the girl.

  20. That google search above does imply that Carter could be the one. Bradley's scenario above does sound like logical one the writers might do given the way other POI episodes are like. I love TPH. She's a really good actor and a TV series is lucky to have her. Same can be said for Emerson. Having grown along with the core 4 and falling in love with their characters it will be very hard to depart with any of them. I'm not saying the new people are lesser it just that we've had a longer relationship with the core and their character development and stories have made us come to really feel for them. Whereas Bear has had the least amount of time in the series and while I think it sad if the dog dies I would feel less sad as oppose to those I spend more time with so to speak. It's not because he's a dog. I love my pet too/

  21. Good review Bradley its my 2nd favourite this year, the ep where Root and Shaw teamed up was my favourite.

  22. I wonder how Carter going to explain to FBI that she brought in head of HR without a warrant and she not a detective........hopefully she has an ally inside the FBI that would help a lot......and she was behind the tip of russians and HR cops with the drugs right
