Person of Interest - Carter's Best Bits
29 Nov 2013
Person of InterestAfter the nerve-wracking episode 'The Crossing', one which featured the emotional death of Detective Carter, I feel it apt to analyse some of her best bits from the 54 episodes she appeared in. The nominations will be in no particular order.
Best episode:
Get Carter
Carter, investigating Elias/Charlie Burton, found her way onto his hitlist - and the Machine's irrelevant list. Despite being hunted by her for the past few months, Reese saved Carter. This was the first moment where Carter could start to believe he might be doing some good in the city.
Flesh and Blood
The leaders of five New York crime families' numbers appear, under threat from Elias. Carter, being the cop that she is, vows to protect the five. Deciding to kidnap the three remaining Dons was a strange move for someone so by-the-book, but it was fantastic.
Prisoner's Dilemma
Having helped Reese and Finch under the table for the past year, Carter is forced to secretly help Reese get out from FBI custody. This was an epic battle of Carter trying to help her friend while avoiding detection from Donnelly.
Endgame/The Crossing
These two speak for themselves. Carter's final attempt to take down HR is almost entirely succesful, with everyone arrested but Detective Simmons. Two fantastic episodes that marked the end of a brilliant character.
Best quote:
Carter: "I'm Carter. You didn't give us a name." Reese: "Seems like the only time you need a name now is when you're in trouble. So, am I in trouble?"
What was virtually the first exchange of words between the two was virtually the last. It really hit home that over the past two years, the two have connected so much.
"I got bored sitting in the car."
This line from 'Masquerade' has stuck with me since I watched the episode. It was one of the first times she and Reese had worked together and it was fun to watch.
Fusco: "Shouldn't we call for backup?" Carter: "You are my backup."
Taking a page out of Hawaii Five-0's Steve McGarrett's playbook, Carter decided that Fusco is her backup.
"I'm a cop. Always will be, John."
This from the season three premiere reminded us of Carter's roots, something that she seemed to have either forgotten or ignored in recent and future times.
"It's a brave new world boys. Don't you read the papers? Anyone can listen in to your phone, even when it's turned off."
Thw whole basis of the show was summed up in one quote in Carter's penultimate episode. It was fantastic to see her (presumably with knowledge of the Machine) suggest this to HR.
Best scene:
Meeting Reese
Less than five minutes into the Pilot, Carter and Reese met in a police precinct. Obviously, this was the beginning of over two years of interaction between the two. The way that they met set the tone for the opening part of the first season perfectly.
Saving Elias
Saving Elias' life, after he had previously tried to kill both her and Taylor, was an interesting move. Despite Elias' past, this was the beginning of a (short-lived) partnership between the two (which extended to Team Machine too). This was the point that Carter went from wanting to take out HR to actually doing something about it. In that respect, this was a huge moment (and it led to Elias honouring Carter by having Simmons killed).
Finding out about Quinn
This was the moment that began the recent three episode mini-arc. After her new HR partner was killed by Terney, the dying detective pointed out Quinn as the head of HR. As someone that she had previously talked about HR with, it left Carter in complete shock.
Death
Her death was highly emotional. Just minutes before, Carter had gotten Reese released, telling him the same introductory quote (see above) as when the two first met. Reese's concern for her despite bleeding out himself was priceless, and really showed how the connection between the two has developed.

Awesome. I so miss Joss!
ReplyDeleteI think every Person of Interest fan does.
ReplyDeleteGreat tribute to a great character! I loved her arc. It's strange to think that she started out as the one chasing Reese and Finch. All those little moments in season one - first meeting Reese, speaking to Reese on the walkietalkie, finally seeing his face and later Finch's, deciding to help them despite her ''moral code'' - were so good.
ReplyDeleteI'm really interested to see what the show looks like without her. The producers themselves have said that she was the ''heart'' of the show. What happens when you take away the heart of a show? It was a very bold move, but I'm excited!
Thank you. I think that from here, at least in the next few episodes, it'll focus around the group still mourning her and kind of trying to keep her in the show (maybe flashbacks, most likely references).
ReplyDeleteGreat piece! although I think you missed the most bamfy line.
ReplyDelete"You don't work for HR anymore, son. You work for me now"
I just love that line so much! Iis just plain badass, is unsubtle as hell: it's Carter's "I own you, bitch". It's Carter taking the gloves off; it was that moment when I realized this was going to be an all or nothing.
Oh this was so good, thanks.

Yep,that's the line! I loved that scene and cheered her on when she said that!!
ReplyDeleteI love her character!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't she just go on like a zombie or sth? :P Walking dead meets PoI maybe? Ok, ok, I know, but I am really sad that she is gone.
Yep, definitely. This show has always been so good at juggling multiple stories at a time. I wonder which ones they'll go with. Surely the team will get the news of Simmons dying in the hospital, but will they know who did it? And what will Elias' next move be? What is the Machine's plan for Root, and how will she be working with the team? How will this experience change Reese, since the last we saw was him pulling the trigger on Quinn? Will we ever see Quinn again? When and how will the government, Vigilance and Decima return? And most importantly... Will they keep the number-of-the-week cases as exciting after this amazing run of episodes (I'm sure they will)?
ReplyDeleteI also wonder if we'll ever see the Harold kid flashback they previewed at Comic-Con! How far had they filmed ahead at that time anyway? :p
They began filming 8th July so by comic con they were probably just moving onto episode 3. Perhaps they'll bring it in soon.
ReplyDeleteoh i still miss her there isnt a day that goes by i dont think of her imstill in mourning i hpoe we see her soon on a eoisode flashback it really hard look @pio without her carter/reese have the best aleastons on the best
ReplyDeleteCarter to Reese: Whenever you show up, trouble's just around the corner.
ReplyDeleteCarter: I always pictured you in the back of my car... in handcuffs.
Reese: To each his own.
Hmm, ok! I remember mention of a younger Reese in a press release for season 2 as well, but that flashback never made it to air. I wonder why CBS doesn't want us to see younger versions of the characters! ;)
ReplyDeleteI no longer will be watching the show and I hope the show gets cancelled. I would rather have my teeth drilled for a week with no sedative than watch those two wooden actresses they replaced Henson's character with.
