First off, I have to say that I don’t remember Coach being this much of a tool (not my preferred choice of word here) in the premiere. I know he did kind of give off that vibe, but this was tool on a whole different level. Coach had broken up with his girlfriend, which resulted in him remembering that he has friends and dragging them to a strip club.
Which I guess was my main problem with the episode but it wasn’t a fault against the episode itself. I tend to have a problem with people that, once they’re in a relationship, ignore their friends, but the second they’re single want to hang out again and pretend like they didn’t ignore you for months. And then the guys tried to act cool in an effort to impress Coach which only created more issues.
My personal feelings of people like Coach aside, I thought this was a pretty strong episode overall. This season has shown a trend of falling back on some pretty standard comedic tropes, especially in regards to Nick and Jess, but they have continually put a spin on it, so things don’t come out tired. In this case, we had the typical “guy wants to go to strip club with friends” routine but, in the spin, Jess isn’t at all upset about that. In fact she’s down to go with the guys. What creates the issue is that Coach forbids her to go, and not only did Nick not stand up for her at all, he didn’t even call her his girlfriend. If it were my significant other that did that, I’d be royally upset.
Other Thoughts:
--- Poor Winston. Coach just didn’t let up on him. At least he started standing up to him a little bit by the end of the episode.
--- Anyone else think that the guys looked like they were forming their own boy band in all the Velvet Rabbit gear?
--- How did Coach not remember Jess?
--- Schmidt is a bit of a klepto. And still at the apartment all the time.
