Disney’s Marvel and Netflix Join Forces to Develop Historic Four Series Epic plus a Miniseries Event Based on Renowned Marvel Characters
Landmark Deal Brings Marvel’s Flawed Heroes of Hell’s Kitchen, led by “Daredevil,” to the World’s Leading Internet TV Network in 2015
Burbank, Calif. - Nov 7, 2013—The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) today announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs leading to a miniseries programming event.
Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.
Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking deal is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling.
“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”
“Marvel’s movies, such as Iron Man and Marvel’s The Avengers, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “With House of Cards and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”
This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm. Netflix members can currently enjoy a wide range of Disney, ABC TV and Disney Channel films and shows across the 41 countries where Netflix operates.

Four? That sounds very ambitious! But I am all for it
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, AND Luke Cage?! Awesome! 2015 can't get here soon enough now with these four new Marvel shows, Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man.
ReplyDeleteWho the heck is Jessica Jones?
ReplyDeleteNetflix is just going to take over the world :D
ReplyDeleteThe wife of Luke Cage. She has superstrength and can fly. She`s cool. Alias, the comic centered around her is great.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I hope the Punisher shows up, and that Tom Jane reprises the role.
ReplyDeleteWould rather see a Marvel Knights movie or mini series at the end but this is great news.
ReplyDeleteBring on Moon Knight!
I wonder if we'll see all 4 in 2015 or just 1 a year for a while.
ReplyDeleteWell...I want to be positive on this but this deal sounds so hugely ambitious that it's going to take a lot of work to not have the tables turn on them.
ReplyDeleteI can see a Daredevil show work, a crime procedural mixed with Arrow elements can't possibly go wrong if done right (chereography, good scoring and most of all good acting will be needed)
Luke Cage as a pure action show fueled by adrenalin can work as well
I'm excited but fear the 'superhero-overkill'
Holy shit this is awesome especially Luke Cage!
ReplyDeleteOr five if it comes to that.
ReplyDeleteThey could easily just make two series instead of three around Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Like a Heroes for Hire-show with Jessica as a big supporting character.
ReplyDeleteThen end the pact with Netflix with The Defenders where Daredevil, Iron Fist and at least Cage is memebers of the supergroup as they alle where at point in the comics.
Also Netflix could continue every of these series if they want. So if they want to keep a Daredevil-show, or The Defenders they could do that. They only need to put out four shows with around 52 episodes.
I read the other day that if Netflix was a network it would be the fourth most watched network in the US. Damn impressive numbers!
ReplyDeleteIron Fist is my all time favourite superhero, i'm really excited about this! Netfilx did a good job with Arrested Development as well so i'm hopeful.
ReplyDeleteWow, this could be epic. I love Arrow, but I never tried Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D because I heard mixed things about it. That being said, I'm always up for a good superhero tv show, especially with this ambition!
ReplyDeleteYou should give SHIELD a try.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good deal of fun and fast paced, good humor and good action.
It was a little too surface deep for me and I did not appreciate all of the comic book/ superhero connections, but if you are a comic book fan I think the references will mean more to you.
The best part is, unlike the DC shows where we don't know whether they are in continuity or not, these will all be firmly in the MCU.
ReplyDeleteScratch that, the best part is actually that we will get all the episodes at once and no commercials!!!
Thanks for your input. I'm still keeping an eye out on the show, I understand the last episode was really good, if I see that people are very positive towards it by the midseason, I'll just catch up. I don't mind references, but the show needs to stand on its own without mentioning Iron Man/The Avengers every two seconds and there are some characters there (namely Ward and Skye) that I just know are going to annoy me. I'm going to wait a bit more before I decide.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to think about this. I got really excited by Agents of SHIELD and it kind of let me down :/
