I like kick-butt TV females - women who can save themselves, rescue those in distress, and throw out a little snark while they do. Call it the Buffy Effect. So I was already predisposed to like Black Canary. What I wasn't prepared for was to like Sara Lance too. She's as problematic a character as they come. She slept with her sister's boyfriend (once and future love triangle), was tortured into becoming an assassin (emotionless robot or whiny villain), and could easily be the Hood reincarnated (last year redux). Little of that is appealing to me. While I was excited to meet Black Canary, I was decidedly less excited to meet her alter ego. Imagine my surprise when she nailed every scene, no matter which part she was playing. While the action scenes were top notch as always and Black Canary and the Arrow trading weapons mid battle was a high point, I also liked the more emotional scenes and her interactions with Sin. For a character with so little screen time, she is already multi-dimensional and layered. Here's hoping she stays that way.

Her first appearance this episode was a little disappointing to be honest. To get caught by Oliver so easily betrayed the awesome fighting skills we've already seen her use. She also seemed too much like a one trick pony, since her sonic scream button has been her go-to escape several times now. It was not shocking that Oliver knew to how to counteract it, and the more she fights crime in the Glades, the less it is bound to work. (Luckily this problem is resolved later when she and the Arrow fight together, trading weapons halfway through. Black Canary is pretty handy with a bow as well, and it makes for an awesome action sequence.) Still, in that first scene, I just knew that she would get away from Oliver. I mean, surely Arrow would not let her identity be revealed already? I forgot what show I was watching. Only Teen Wolf moves the plot at a brisker pace. While their interaction while masked was supremely cheesy, the unmasking was great. Oliver looked stunned. Sara looked sorry for them both. It was a well-done moment. I particularly like how they did not draw out the initial meeting, but followed up later with Oliver's reaction to the team. It made the whole thing more powerful to me, although I could have done without the boat recap. I guess since they changed actresses, they thought it was necessary.

While the first scene was great for the quick reveal, I actually prefer Black Canary's time with Sin. Yes, it helps that Sin is my favorite new character. It also helps that she brings some great snarky lines. However, I was equally surprised by how vulnerable Sara allows herself to be with Sin. In a lot of TV today it feels like female heroes (supernatural, cop, or otherwise) are not allowed to show emotion to others, stifling their characters or worse, turning them into a caricature. Sara is obviously comfortable enough and real enough to share some of her troubles with Sin although it is likely the first time she has done so. Sin may not know Sara's past but she makes a good sounding board and Sara definitely needs someone to talk to. Plus, they do it without entering emoangst territory. Score! I wish this scene had been longer. Female interaction on Arrow is limited and I would like to know more about how they became allies, besides Sara rescuing Sin from thugs. I hope even after Sara reveals herself to her family, she still has time to mentor Sin.

However, the greatest Sara moment comes when she and Oliver are talking at Verdant. She starts snarky with Oliver, expositing some of her story but not enough to lose mystery. While Oliver is impatient with her flippancy, her answers intrigue me. What did happen to Slade? How did she "die" the second time? Who trained her - the League of Assassins or someone else? She's certainly the most mystifying character right now and I look forward to delving into her past. I also like how perceptive Oliver is when he's with her. Oliver is not known for reading people's emotions as he often has to be reminded of them, but he has Sara down cold. She seems to want to be with her family, but she doesn't know how to reconcile her new life with who she was with them. It's a paradox that Oliver is uniquely qualified to help with since he dealt with it all last year. Instead of this being a vengeance do-over, I am glad they are recycling the emotional fallout because in some ways that was shortchanged last year. To see Sara reunite with her family and all the issues it will inevitably create may finally make the Lances as interesting as the Queens. Indeed it starts when Sara overhears her father talking to Oliver about how her death has affected Laurel and himself. Sara's reaction to Quentin's confession that Laurel is spiraling out of control in the same manner as he did after Sara "died" hit me harder than I expected. By the way, the Oliver and Quentin portion of this scene was fantastic as well. They need more screen time together too. I was particularly moved by Quentin's admission that he took Sara's death hard. I don't blame Sara for fleeing after that. It was tough to hear.

Sara's final big moment is again with Oliver, so I can't wait until she interacts with more people, especially the Lances - the exact point Oliver tries to get across. After stopping her in the hall of the hospital where she checks on Sin, Oliver says he's paid Sin's medical expenses. Sara tries to move on before Thea sees her, but Oliver calls her out on her performance as a ghost. That's exactly how she sees herself, a woman who no longer fits in her old life but is not yet able to move on to a new one, a specter trapped between worlds. The island changed her as much as it did Oliver, but in Oliver she may find hope. Not because of their past relationship or their future crime fighting, but because in the course of his year at Starling City, surrounded by his family and friends, Oliver has found himself again. Not the vacuous playboy of before, not the vigilante consumed with vengeance, but as a person beyond just a cause. If he can turn his life around, Sara can too. Oliver: "You can let it go and come home. I mean I know that the earthquake brought you here, but your family kept you here." Oliver extends his hand and encourages Sara to tell the Lances she's alive no matter the cost to himself. Say what? Um, what exactly does that mean? Yeah there's more to this back story than just being on the Captain's boat together and I look forward to this mystery unraveling. While one episode is obviously not enough in which to really judge a character, this taste of how Black Canary and Sara are represented gives me hope for a complicated, interesting story line, and Caity Lotz seems capable of handling the vast emotions the story will entail. I was already excited about Arrow's second season. It's proving itself to be superior to the first one. The introduction of BC and Sara are just two more reasons to look forward to Wednesday nights.

-Yes the most emotional was when Oliver told them about Sara but I actually liked all of Team Arrow in their second scene.

Biggest Idiot - The Mayor
-Seriously dude. First you kill your own people and then you go into a public place, a media event no less, and show your face. Put on a mask. Heck on this show, even a little eye shadow would do.

-I really wish she would get a bigger part. It would be interesting if she ended up being a villain because it would tie Diggle better into the story and they sorely need to do that.

  1. I was surprised by a lot in this episode, but none so much as actually liking Sara. I thought all her scenes went off well and I like how multi-dimensional she is already. I expect her presence will shake things up a lot. I'm just glad that because this is Arrow, we don't have to wait very long for the aftermath.

  2. I like Sara/Canary as well. I was even disappointed with the unmasking scene as you were but for completely different reasons. I didn't have a problem with Canary getting caught because I don't see how she was supposed to expect the specific trap that was set for her. Frankly, the trap was way too preposterous, and seemingly based on oddly accurate speculation, making it damn near impossible to see coming.


    I was disappointed in the unmasking scene because the second half of it made little sense. Canary is caught, unmasked, and revealed to be Sara so the jig is up. Why would she bother trying to escape after the canary call went boom? Oliver already knows who she is and they both know she's not going anywhere so what's the point? What good does it do to run now? It accomplishes nothing. If I was Oliver I'd be confused but mainly annoyed.


    - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought The Mayor was a grade-A moron.
    - I liked Quentin's AA scene as well but I liked his conversation with Oliver better, especially with Sara listening in.
    - I'd like to see more Lila as well and I'm pretty certain we will. Probably episode seven. I doubt she'll be a villain though. That distinction will probably go to ARGUS' Amanda Waller.
    - I was disappointed in the "twist" at the end with Blood. I was hoping his character would be more complicated than he turned out to be.
    - Agreed about Star Labs. They did the same thing in the first half of season one with "applied sciences division" which turned out to be the QC division to adapt the earthquake machine.
    - I think Oliver's "workout" line worked better than the "already there" line. That one made me audibly groan.

  3. Sara actually works better for me than Oliver did for most of Season 1. Maybe it's because they haven't yet had time to talk her backstory to death in endless island flashbacks. I prefer it when the backstory of the hero in question is kept at least a little vague and shrouded in mystery. Leaving the past vague also gives the writers more flexibilty going forward...not to mention, fewer opportintites to screw things up.
    Regarding the title: Helena (aka, The Huntress) had already introduced the "crucible" metaphor, during her first dinner with Oliver... "everybody has their crucible."

  4. I think Sara escaped because while the jig was up, she wasn't ready for this conversation yet. Which is why after she composed herself, she went to Oliver's home turf, his club and started this conversation on her own terms, when SHE was ready for it.

  5. I really liked this episode and all the scenes you've stated: I liked the Sara-Sin talk, Sara listening in on Quentin's confession to Oliver... But my favorite scene was Oliver-Sara at the hospital. Oliver just gets her, knows where she's coming from, because he's been there and it just hit me the hardest out of all the emotional scenes.

    We're definitely seeing Lila again, but I'd bet on potential love interest or tragic surprise death, before I'd bet on her becoming a villain. Diggle cares about her, so they'll either develop a relationship, or she'll be used against him.

  6. Tragic, sudden death is my guess for Lila, too. Isn't she with ARGUS and isn't Amanda Waller supposed to show up soon as head of ARGUS? I'm thinking she'll get involved in the story as a result of whatever incident causses Lila's death.

  7. I kinda hope not. Not only because Diggle already has his brother's death as motivator and really doesn't need another one, but because it would be so predictable. I think she has potential and I hope she continues to recur, rather than killing her off for angst/set up Waller as a big bad for Diggle.

  9. No, it wouldn't. But if she's alive, it means the story can go in more directions- she could go rogue, she could rescue herself from whatever situation she's in, she could infiltrate the "bad guys'" group and get Diggle information.... I just don't want them to fridge her or make her a damsel in distress.

  10. Her character doesn't seem to lend itself to the "damsel in distress" angle. Being Diggle's undercover contact would seem more likely, if they don't kill her.

  12. This episode was awesome! Really well written, especially with all the puns ("sink in", "tying lose ends" etc.)
    Sebastian Blood being some kind of vilain was predictabl but I like it, he's a strong character!

  13. We see Sara after she already connected to Sin. I bet she was more closed up before she met Sin. Oliver hid from everyone when we first saw him, and it took him time to open up to Diggle about his secret.

  14. I hate the fact that Sara is the introduction of Black Canary, have not I accepted the idea and probably I will not ever accept. DINAH LAUREL LANCE is the true and unique Canary and outside it, only his mother. Sara does not even exist in the comics, these producers comes misrepresenting the history of my favorite heroine. ¬¬

  15. It bothers me that another character get all the credit that should be of Laurel. I watch this Arrow, and the only thing I can see are lies and the only thing I can feel is like vomiting.

  16. Laurel has her own distinct storyline in Arrow and the show runners have already told us that she will come into her own later in the series. Sara will not effect that.

  17. I am actually glad that they are not following the comics to the letter. I like this grounded world that Arrow is set in. However, as a book lover, I am have sometimes hated movies because they did not do the books justice. I would say that since the show runners have already said that Laurel will be Black Canary, I don't see the problem with Sara.

  18. I figured Blood would be evil from the start because he's a politician. In TV these days, politician = villain. However, he is one of the more intriguing villains we've had so I can't wait to see where the story takes him.

  21. Very good point. I honestly thought he was stealing the meds from the hospital to finance his dastardly deeds and give himself more political clout. That might not be the case, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

  22. I think Laurel's Black Canary will be launched off of Sara's Black Canary and I don't know why that is a bad thing. If Laurel becomes Black Canary and becomes the embodiment of the character, why should it matter who came before her? Everyone has to start somewhere.

  23. If that's why then it's an extreme overreaction on her part. She's supposed to be an assassin trained by the deadliest people in the world and she runs away from someone who is no threat to her because of some feelings? That's ridiculous. If she didn't want to (or wasn't ready to) talk, she should have stood there in front of him and told him exactly that instead of running away.

  24. The "crucible" concept is apparently going to be an ongoing theme of this show. So I guess, every now and then, they need somebody to speak up and actually say the word crucible. That's what I took away from that scene with Blood. But you're right, they could have gotten someone else to say the word for us.

  26. I understand why comic book fans wish for Laurel to become the "true" Black Canary, but I just can't connect with her character on Arrow. I've seen the last few episodes with Sara and to me she is already a much more interesting protagonist than her sister. If this continues I'll start to root for her to remain the Black Canary, and not Laurel. I know that won't happen, but still... It's so frustrating! I hope I like Laurel more this season. Also, how will they ever make her achieve the same level of martial art mastery? It's not like they're going to ship her over to an island as well for a few years, but her self defense classes just don't cut it - Black Canary is supposed to be one of the best fighters in the world. I mean, what can they do with that aspect of the story? She is secretly visiting the local dojo every day after work? Ha.
