Hart of Dixie - Episode 3.06 - Family Tradition - Review

It was an emotional rollercoaster for several characters on Hart of Dixie this week!  From Zoe's struggle to make contact with the Wilkes family, to Lemon's business - and friendship - decisions, to Annabeth and Lavon's relationship crossroads, this was an eventful episode.

Zoe lacks warm family relationships in her life, and longs for those connections as much as she fears rejection.  Hence, when circumstances raise her interest in getting to know the Wilkes, it takes some soul-searching and repeat viewings of Dolphin Tale to inspire her to make a move.

Of course, since this is Zoe, she has to lie about who she is and crash an eight year old's birthday party, causing Joel to masquerade as a magician.  But while these types of shenanigans on her part are always hilarious, this one had a twist of angst in it since Zoe felt so vulnerable about integrating herself into the family gathering.

Everything went wonderfully until Zoe got up the nerve to reveal her identity.  Then she was swiftly dissed and dismissed by her cousin in an unnecessarily catty manner.  The Wilkes seemed so terrific up until that point...I fully expect they will thaw to Zoe just as Bluebell at large has, but despite Zoe's silly charade, I don't think the mean response that she was "just the entertainment" was at all warranted.

How adorable and unceasingly supportive is Joel?  As much as I enthusiastically root for Zoe to get back together with Wade, I must acknowledge that Joel is sweet, cute, and a wonderful boyfriend.

Lemon had a chance to buy Fancy's, and even though it didn't work out, it showed her that she does have ambitions beyond the Rammer Jammer.  The portrayal of Lemon and Wade's friendship in this episode was excellent.  I love that this relationship which has no romantic or sexual suggestions about it is a completely deep and relevant ongoing part of the show.

Annabeth finally told Lavon of her feelings after she incorrectly assumed that he planned to propose a couple of weeks ago.  While her parents were amusingly obnoxious, I really felt for poor AB as they kept harping on the very topic that their daughter has been grappling with and trying to repress for some time.  Hart of Dixie has done a fantastic job of developing Annabeth's character more and more this season, and making the AB/Lavon romance one to root for.  I hope that these two can get beyond the awkwardness of being slightly out-of-sync in their plans for the near future...given how sensitive and honest they both are, I suspect that it will all work out for them.

George and Lynly are getting together again, in a much more earnest context this time.  Lynly has become progressively less obnoxious and more likable over the last few episodes, and her spot-on predictions of George's behavior in pursuing her in spite of himself were cute and funny.  Now there's little doubt that Lavon will soon learn of the George/Lynly affair, which will surely bring comic hijinks!

What did you think of this week's episode?  Do you want Zoe to become close to the Wilkes, or not?  Any theories as to who bought Fancy's?  Share your ideas in the comments!

  1. I do not think Vivian's comments to Zoe where at all caddy. The Wilkes reached out to her several times in the past and she ignored them. Then She crashed her eight year old son's birthday party on false pretenses. She knew they were not happy with her yet she risked bringing drama to an eight year old childs special day. This all for her own personal gain. Sorry Zoe but everyone is not put on this earth to welcome you with open arms whenever your good and ready. Welcome to HOD Vivian. I think I am gonna like you.

  2. As a southerner, I think the Wilkes approach to Zoe in the past was unbelievable. It is shocking that no one actually approach her in person. Sending an email seems very impersonal and a little off putting to me. I think if one person can to her and actually invited her in person she would've been more receptive.

    That's just my opinion.

  3. They never said they sent E-mails she said she was invited to a bunch of stuff and was too busy. Sending out mass E-mails to inform people of things is Zoe's MO

  4. I am not talking about Zoe's MO. I am talking about theirs. No one knew who Zoe was so they have never approached her in person. I know she met the one aunt, and that was initiated by her.

  5. I agree! If they can't bother with being personal with Zoe (I can't believe they don't know how she looks like!), they can't blame Zoe for not bothering to pop up in one of their events. I think it's very very harsh of her cousin to treat her like she just kicked her puppy.

  6. Wasnt a bad episode. I think the Wade /Lemon Friendship is quite different and has really livened up some episodes. i dont think any of us would of expected it to happen in earlier seasons and it feels like a natural progression.

  7. They can't blame her for crashing an eight year olds b-day party? What grown adult does something like that?

  8. And what part of the show does it tell you that Zoe is an adult? OK, kidding.

But on a serious note, she did not really crash the party. I use the term "crash" when the crasher invites him- or herself to the party AND ruins and/or causes some trouble in it. But quite the contrary, she even saved the day when the magician did not show up. As a result, everybody was having fun. Things only got sour when at the very end, Zoe revealed who she was. That's like literally the ONLY part of the party where it was not fun.

  9. I really did not like this episode. I don't like the storylines of just about everyone. George is an attorney who lived in NYC and is 32 years old. I can't believe that he would be interested in Lynly who acts like a teenager. Wade has gone back to banging any woman around which is just to easy for the writers to go back to. Zoe and Joel have no chemistry. They have only been together for 6 months or less yet we don't see anything that would show they are still hot for each other! Lemon, AB and Lavon are the few holding my attention. I have seen every episode of the series so I hate to say I don't like this season....but I don't. :(

  10. @lisa you have a good point...I think I just love Zoe so much I tend to be on her side even when she's being ridiculous, as she usually is...LOL :)
