No, not really. It's called late-onset OCD and it's much more common among women than men. Late-onset OCD is usually associated with people who have anxiety and/or panic disorders, which is something Bailey has been known to have trouble with, albeit not officially diagnosed.
This actually explains her repeated freakouts and breakdowns quite well. The only thing the show messed up on is the age range. Women who develop late-onset OCD are usually more than a decade younger than Bailey.
Thanks for the info, I didn't know that, but what I meant by it came out of nowhere is that it happened so suddenly they didn't build up to it and I don't think her husband wanting to live with her would trigger it that would be a really stupid cause! Maybe it started off-camera after the patients died like Arizona's pregnancy! !
Bailey has been having freakouts and breakdowns for multiple seasons. Whether it's about Tuck, Richard, her string of post-op infections, her relationship, etc., Bailey has more meltdowns than anyone on the show by a mile. This last one was probably just the final straw.
Thanks for this! I was just wondering why Bailey is suddenly having this. I always thought OCD happens from a young age and is there from the beginning. :)
Not to mention some can develop symptoms of OCD after a triggering event of trauma, which obviously can happen at any point in life.
That said, Bailey is getting on my nerves this year, her sub-plots are not engaging me this year while I am sensitive to OCD as my dear childhood friend had it for a few years, but consider me unenthusiastic. Not to mention the way the confrontation between Owen and Bailey went down seemed to me as REALLY irresponsible. You don't corner and publicly humiliate a mentally ill person, especially not in their place of employment in such a public space. I really hope the ish-factor that was that bit of writing is addressed in an upcoming episode. If not, they should have had Owen do some other dramatic thing to get her out of the OR (a house contaminate the O.R. or rip a glove type tactic would have satisfied the need for drama and Hunt could have just done the whole "1 inch-4 inch" thing in his office.
Anyways, bored and offended as of now but I hope they redeem the latter and am not optimistic the former will change any time soon.
I don't mind how Owen did what he did. The uncomfortable public spectacle was an unfortunate side effect of Hunt attempting to quickly verify what Ben had suspected. It wasn't ideal but it was the most expedient way of confirming there was a problem.
My problem with this storyline is that, regardless of the explanation Grey's gives for Bailey's behavior, it's still the same thing yet again. No matter how you slice it, this is just another Bailey freakout / meltdown. Grey's is redressing the same plot they've already given Bailey multiple times.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Ugh, why are they doing this to Bailey, first the breakdown after the patients died and now this?
ReplyDeleteThis OCD is so ridiculous and came out of nowhere!!

ReplyDeleteTrue, but she was so strong at the beginning of the series it's sad to see her like that now.
ReplyDeleteagree. And normally she is able to 'self-soothe'. This storyline is not so far from credible as some may imagine.
