Game of Thrones - Jack Gleeson may quit acting when show ends

Thanks to Dunmif for the heads up.

“Game of Thrones” star Jack Gleeson may leave acting when he’s done playing the sadistic Joffrey Baratheon — perhaps to focus on his charity work.

Gleeson, 21, auditioned for “GoT” at 17, and sounds as if he has not enjoyed the attention he has received since.

“It was always a recreation beforehand, but when I started doing ‘Game of Thrones’ perhaps the reality was made too real for me,” Gleeson told Ireland’s Independent. ”The lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn’t something I gravitate towards.”

  1. I think he's probably had a bad experience playing a villian but I hope he would know that people hating joffery is different than people hating him. I also hope people would know that he is acting and is not like joffery in reality.

  2. He has mentioned this before, apparently Jack is an extremely intelligent guy and wants to study instead which is fair enough. Its a shame he won't be gracing our screens as menacing villains in years to come but have to respect his choice.

  3. I AM NOT RETIRED!

(all in all, he seems like a really good lad in real life)

  4. Wow, impressive. Most of the kids nowadays (as well as adults) crave the fame and attention and don't really care about it's costs or other more important things in life. It is really beautiful to see someone this young having this kind of insight.
I don't think being a successful actor is per se a bad thing (many succesful actors lead kinda normal lives), but if he sees past it's perks and realizes it is not for him, very mature... I really respect his opinion.

  6. Aw, it's such a waste of talent - but if he has other goals, I totally understand it and kind of support him :) I wish him all the luck

  7. Can't fault him for making his own decisions here. If his heart's not in it, he should do himself the favor of moving on. However, he's done a terrific job in this role and I would be sad if he didn't work on more projects.

He's got a solid resume now, so perhaps in a few years he'll get the itch again, assuming he does walk away.

  8. He's such a terrific actor. I hate his character so much because Jack makes Joffrey seem so real. I hope he will reconsider. He has an amazing future to be an amazing actor, but whatever he decided to do with his life I wish him all the very best. Not everyone is made for celebrity and being in the public eye. I know I wouldn't be able to deal with the nonsense these people go through on a daily basis.

  9. ^Agreed. A lot of young people think being rich, famous and being in Hollywood is the only thing to live for. Or getting your 15 minutes of fame is the way to make it big. It isn't. Hollywood isn't real. It's fake. He seems to be very intelligent and has his head on right. He can always go away. Do his studies if that is what he wishes and make a come back when he's older and ready. A talent like Jack's doesn't just go away.
