Are you supercharging your social media impact?
1.Only use two hash tags per tweet otherwise it might get filtered out in the count as spam
2.BatB doesn’t need a hash tag to trend so you can still put it in a tweet and it will count
3.If every US Beastie could tweet 10-15 tweets with the hash tag BatB every day we could get on the Twitter Trend Nielsen TV Ratings TOP 10 easily and consistently.
4.Be sure to leave at least one positive comment on the official Beauty and the Beast Facebook page per day.
5.Like other people’s comments as well as reply to other people’s comments. Keep the ‘People Talking About This’ ratio high.
6.Be sure to check in on Get Glue every day. Leave links to articles, post BatB fan art, like fellow Beasties’ posts, whatever, just interact on the BatB Get Glue page every single day.
PS: Super proud to see my Twitter timeline filled with almost nothing but BatB PCA voting tweets. Keep up the good work and remember the F5 button is your friend.

The wonderful lady behind Save Each Other worked really hard on her Rooftop Notes campaign so be sure to participate. Never forget where our fandom has come from. We had to fight long and hard for our season 2 and if we want season 3, we’re going to have to battle even harder than before. So, I hope everyone participates in this campaign to save our show this go round as well. For more information about the campaign click here.
Now on to your regularly scheduled recap…
Up for discussion this week is episode 2x07: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? This week’s episode was written by a new comer Wendy Straker Hauser. This week also welcomed yet another newbie director into the Beastie family, Jeff Renfroe. I liked the addition of Wendy Straker Hauser in the writers’ room and can’t wait to see what she does next. Her dialog was an upgrade from the last few episodes. She fleshed out the character of Tess and made her warm and vulnerable and hopefully on the path back to being likeable. She also understood what makes the character of JT so beloved among us Beasties: sass, heart and being the voice of reason.
As mentioned in the comments of last week’s review, I’m going to be tinkering with the recap and review hybrid format. Please be sure to tell me what you like and what you don’t.
Cat
The beginning of the episode pleasantly surprised in regards to Cat. She didn’t gloss over what happened last week. It was really affecting her ability to touch and even look at Vincent. She doesn’t bottle up her concerns she puts them out in the open. Now that’s a Cat I can get behind. Too bad it doesn’t last. In this episode, Cat waffles between a take charge attitude (even if her plan was terrible at least she came up with a plan) naive and wishy-washy. She once again let Agent Reynolds pray on her deepest fears and lets him tap into the furthest depths of her mind where all her doubts about Vincent reside. She even goes as far as quote Agent Reynolds verbatim when confronting Vincent with his treachery. One minute she is calling Agent Reynolds ‘dad’ the next minute she’s offended he’s called her ‘honey’. Cat is quick to defend Vincent without really evaluating if she even believes it herself. She forces herself on him at one point in what I think was an effort to take her mind off her doubts and try to remind her about the good things Vincent (even a Vincent who barely remembers her) has to offer.
Vincent
The character of Vincent is irrevocably and irreparably tarnished beyond recognition in my eyes. I forgave him for the Alex thing. I over looked the shoving of Cat. I also try to think positively about all the hell that Cat has gone through due to her involvement with Vincent and chalk it up to developing a backstory for their “epic love”. But it is now starting to have all the telltale signs of a toxic/borderline abusive relationship. I love the darker undertones and anti-hero trappings because that gives Jay Ryan something to sink his teeth into and for that I’m glad. However in terms of character development it depresses the hell out of me. Vincent was once a strong, silent, brooding, reluctant hero once upon a time. I could understand his motivations. I was willing to cut the man some slack. But now, it has become too much. There have been seven episodes thus far and only one episode (that episode being Hothead) where I really felt for Vincent, wanted, no need, for Cat to cut him slack. But at the end of this episode, I find myself agreeing with Bob Reynolds at this point, sometimes there is such a thing as enough is enough when it comes to love. I don’t know how or when they are going to bring back Vincent from this edge of darkness but it better happen soon or I’m afraid a lot more Beasties will jump ship and never return.
VinCat
Well, we took no steps forward and about 10 steps back this week. I’m not feeling the chemistry between VinCat right now (and the writers assure us it’s written into the script that way). There are so many other ways to put VinCat on a temporary time out without rehashing the Alex storyline. Vincent could have just insisted on leaving Cat without setting up the painful trap of her witnessing him kissing another woman (again). He also didn’t have to reiterate that Tori was ‘like him’, implying she was a more compatible mate (I know I wasn’t the only Beastie who took it that way, right?). On the other side of that coin was Cat blurting out for all of Team Beastie to hear, that she does indeed think he is an out of control beast is nearing the crazy levels of the other beasts on Vincent’s list. She was pulling away from Vincent at the beginning of the episode (and I agree with that choice otherwise Cat would have really started looking like a desperate chick that would over look anything to be with her man). But really, they should have been talking about the incident instead of making out.
Tess
Finally, we get some insight into the psyche of Tess and I could not be happier. She came across as vulnerable and more importantly relatable. I’m glad we’re exploring this thing with JT. If Vincent won’t bond with him and Cat has no need for him now that she’s found Vincent, then why not let him have a friend in Tess. I love that the writer really played up her tomboy side and made her a “cub scout”. Even if it is unrealistic, Boy Scouts as an organization is no joke. They are a very stodgy and uptight bunch. I like that Tess got to show of her smarts on not one but two occasions that really helped in putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Ms. Wendy even made sure to make Tess light hearted and fun. She even came across as self-coconscious about her appearance and demeanor. Man, Grandma Vargas really has done a number on poor Tess.
JT
Can I get a heck yeah? JT is back and even though the show is still going down a road that I don’t want to walk down, at least I know there will be a bright spot. JT comes across in the writing as a plot device but thanks to the talent of Austin Basis, he breathes life into a character that could easily be forgotten and not deemed as important as we Beasties think/know he is. His absent is felt and dearly missed anytime he is MIA. It’s because he brings the funny, the sass and most importantly, the common sense. He’s the one that explains things. He’s the one that gets stuff done. He has a unique relationship with everyone on Team Beastie that serves a purpose. He’s Vincent’s best friend who gave up everything to find a cure for him and help him stay hidden. He was there for Cat when Vincent went missing, making sure she at least ate something and got some sleep. He’s Gabe’s foil and the audience’s reminder that we really shouldn’t be too trusting of Gabe. And now, he’s providing a sounding board for Tess and could quite possible be her love interest. JT is a jack of all trades and the king of the Beasties hearts. Let’s just hope the writers have figured this out and don’t pull that crap ever again.
Gabe
I liked Gabe in this episode. He wasn’t pushing up on Cat. He was showing genuine concern for someone who was not Cat. He was seriously trying to crack the case of Vincent’s mysterious handler. He took one for the team when they were confronted about them investigating Vincent’s missions. He came a running when Cat beckoned for the files. He sticks up for Vincent and even coerces Tori into falling into line, even though she wanted to go. All in all he didn’t come across as too skeevy and lovelorn. Let’s hope the character of Gabe stays this way and doesn’t try to get involved with Cat in a romantic fashion.
Agent Reynolds
I loved Agent Reynolds in this episode. He was so conniving and unscrupulous. He had a backup plan for every situation. The thing I loved the most was his faux indignation and then pretending to put it all together on the spot. Not only did that give him leverage against Vincent but also gave him a chance to really do a number on Cat. Bob was a slick talker and all I have to say is, ‘Well played sir.’
Grade: B-
Reason: On first watch this episode ranked at about a B+, but upon further inspection as well as retrospection, I settled on a B-. Initially, I was on a ‘oh thank the heavens JT is getting screen time’ high. After that particular buzz wore off, some harsh realities of this season’s storytelling began to wash over me. The JTnT kiss was a little too forced and wreaked of fan service. Not that I minded but at the same time I don’t want the writers stooping to that, if you can understand where I’m coming from on that point.
I don’t like rehashing storylines that I did like, let alone the ones I hated. Tori equals Alex 2.0, end of story, knock it off. She’s even a red head just like Alex was. The show is called Beauty and the Beast. This is supposed to be a show about an epic love. I understand it’s a drama first and foremost but it’s starting to feel like a daytime soap (and not in a good way). A person’s hopes can only be dashed so many times before there’s no pieces left to pick up.
The story was fast paced and well plotted for the story they wanted to tell (though a few things felt rushed as usual). They’ve given us a great villain in the form of Agent Reynolds as well the phenomenal casting choice that is Ted Whittall. But I didn’t come to the party for the appetizers; I came for the main course.
I liked this episode well enough but it lacked in a lot of areas and it becomes glaringly clear if you watch this episode more than twice like I did. It just doesn’t hold up to multiple viewings and most Beauty and the Beast episodes do, even if there are a few plot holes and/or continuity errors.
Awards
Character of the Night
Agent Reynolds – Sure he’s the cause of all this strife in season 2 but at least he’s an effective villain who accomplishes what he sets out to do and looks good while doing it. He’s a classic villain who has, style, class and grace as well as being manipulative, cunning and calculated.
Favorite Moments
1. We got a mini flash of Jay Ryan’s abs just before the make out session was cut short.
2. Vincent’s eye roll when Cat tells Agent Reynolds that he wasn’t interrupting anything.
3. They use “Referendia” to figure out the coordinates. At least it’s not Bing, like the rest of the shows on The CW.
4. Vincent chokes on his ‘not pumpkin’ cookie.
5. A drunken Tess decides to make weird voices while inquiring whether or not JT would like some more pizza.
Favorite Lines
1. Vincent: A perfectly fine and in control assassin.
2. Tess: It looks like the holiday section threw up on you.
3. Tori: I’m not going to tweet about it.
4. Gabe: DETECTIVES! I was just explaining to Tori how we all need to be careful about what we say in front of people.
5. JT: So you’re just going to expose Vincent to your FBI father whom you’ve only known for two seconds?
Favorite Scenes
1. Gabe talking to Tori about what happened with her father.
2. When the gang is all there on Vincent’s houseboat working together to save Vincent.
3. Vincent calling Agent Reynolds and giving him a piece of his mind.
4. Tess and JT decide to spend Thanksgiving together.
5. Cat and Vincent try to come up with a code word
Best Character Interactions
It was a tie between Gabe and Tori and JT and Tess.
I would prefer it if JT and Tess aka JTnT would go more in the direction of Brotp than lovers but if this union is destined to soften up Tess, flesh her out and get her out of the role of Gabe’s wing man, I’m down. I think this union would also be beneficial for JT in regards to the fact that it seems like Vincent is really either a) remembering him or b) reaching out and trying to bind with him so why not give him another character to play off of and create new and interesting bonds in the process. You all should know I would go along with just about anything if that meant JT were to get more screen time.
I liked the character interaction of Gabe and Tori. I can’t really explain it. His interest and concern seemed so genuine. It served as personal reminder that at times I actually like the character of Gabe and not just the actor, Sendhil. The times I like Gabe best is when he is being smart, helpful and not pining after Cat. Yes, he had an ulterior motive in the fact that he wanted to keep Tori quite but honestly it would have been easier to just let her fall asleep (and perhaps not wake up) with her concussion. I feel like Gabe might see a lot of his younger self in Tori, lest we not forget that he too was once a victim of being trapped in a gilded cage.
WTF Moments
1. When JT kisses Tess. I cheered so loud my boyfriend came in to see what was going on (he thought I was watching The Mentalist and that Jane had killed Red John or something). If VinCat is on the fritz, I’m going to need another couple to root for. You know it ain’t gonna be Cat and Gabe or Tori and Vincent so why not my second favorite BatB Brotp – JTnT.
2. When Tori kissed Vincent, my blood boiled and I rolled my eyes so hard and so long, I got a little dizzy. True story. I like the actress that plays Tori. I think the introduction of a female beast is cool. What I don’t appreciate is a forcibly contrived and tired plot that only serves the purpose of creating drama for the sake of drama. The VinCat romance is already on thin ice and the tarnishing of the epic love has Beasties leaving in droves out of frustration. There was infinitely better ways for VinCat to break up.
3. When the building blows up with Vincent in it. Are we truly expected to believe that the lead male character isn’t going to survive the explosion? Are we Beasties truly supposed to be concerned about Tori after just one episode (especially since her kissing Vincent was perceived to be the straw that broke Cat’s back)? Oh writers, whatever am I going to do with you?
Burning Questions
1. Is the use of “condor” a continuity issue? One minute, it’s the handler’s code name, the next minute, its Vincent’s code name and then suddenly it appears to be Vincent’s verbal trigger.
2. So is it canon yet that when a beast’s eyes flashes that greyish-white it means they’re horny? If not that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.
3. Why are Tori’s beast’s eyes red? Is it because her hair is red? Is it to represent that her beast power is to induce rage within other beasts?
4. I plan on doing 8 meta articles over the winter hiatus, I'm open to suggestion about topics, I'm currently working one about how memory works.
5. What do you think about this week's recap & review hybrid format?

Polls
Last Week’s Results - Who should Cat end up with? – Well, the Beasties are still rooting for VinCat despite it all, me, I’m still hoping for Evan Marks to return all supercharged and beastly to give Vincent a real run for his money. Not really but any option is better than Gabe at this point (sorry to the one person that voted for him last week).
This Week’s Poll - BatB Great Debate #7 – Do you like the idea of a female beast?
My co-hosts Lu and Kristen inspired this question, they were really happy about it. I want to know if you are. Please be sure to leave comments about why or why not. I love when I get to read how Beasties are feeling about hot button issues.
Make sure you vote and comment on this week’s best scene poll as well.

Hi. I don't comment on your reviews often since I somehow miss them most of the times? But I like this style you've adopted at exploring each character separately.
ReplyDeleteCat's inhibition at making out with a guy who just ripped someone's heart out is understandable. I'm not judging Vincent for it but it's a horrifying and brutal image and doesn't leave your mind so easily. Specially for someone like Cat who desperately wants her Vincent back. But he is succumbing to his beast side. I also didn't quite get her affability to Reynolds. I didn't see the conflict I was hoping to in her interaction with him. But I did like how Cat let her guard down in this episode not once but twice confessing that she needed family around. Maybe that's why she was so accepting of him till she discovered the truth about him. Either ways, didn't like it much.
I don't know what to say about Vincent. Seems like his personality has been erased with his memory. I don't recognise him anymore.
Okay, now that you mentioned, I do agree it would've been nice to build a sexual tension between Jt&T before giving us a kiss but every time I think about it, I can't help going "Aww". I liked it, I did. Let's see how they take it from here.
As the episodes are progressing, I am hoping that Gabe is genuine and doesn't have hidden intentions. I'm taking a liking to him minus his crush on Cat.
Ted Whitthal STOLE the show. What a fantastic actor! I hated Reynolds more than ever in this episode because of his manipulation of Catherine but I couldn't help enjoy the character on-screen all the same. Loved to hate him!
I would, I liked the episode as a standalone. It was very well-written and directed. But it didn't re-establish my lost connection with the show.
I wish you would explain in more detail why Vincent is to the point of no return for you.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, the more the VinCat relationship seems like a toxic and borderline abusive relationship. It seems like Cat does all of the sacrificing without getting much in return. It seems like not only is Cat always making excuses for Vincent but I find myself doing the same as well, especially during every single episode of season 2. It's becoming exhausting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and commenting.
ReplyDeleteI'm upset with Vincent but I do see him coming back from all this. I guess I see him as a victim. I'm not going to talk about the horrible things he has done to Catherine or the way he has been treating her lately, but I want to talk about what has happened to him.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of season 1 he was taken away for 3 months and had his memory wiped and horrible things done to him as a result of becoming supercharged/superpowered. He didn't ask for this. We know that he is such a good, sweet and lovable man but he has endured lots of pain recently.
He returns to discover that he had this whole other life he doesn't remember. Friends and a loving and caring girlfriend who is aching for his memories to return. For us, season 1 and all the events and love story we saw unfold between VinCat happened, but to this 'new' Vincent, they haven't. He has no memory of her, has been trained to kill and has god knows what animal DNA's injected in him.
I was hurt when he pushed her in episode 2, but not as much as I would have been had Vincent 1.0 done it. He doesn't feel the love he has for this woman, hasn't been in a situation after being kidnapped where he has needed to 'control' his beast side. Yet, as soon as it happened, we saw the pain and remorse etched on his face.
During ep 2x07, and going to the scene which has frustrated and angered many fans, the Tori and Vincent kiss, I didn't feel upset. To me it was done to push Catherine away. We see that Tori's eyes flash and glow and she pushes towards him, while at the same time we see Vincent hear Catherine's heartbeat (sensing her nearby) then goes in knowing that Catherine will see them. His eyes don't flash and during the kiss we see Vincent stop and gaze towards Catherine, probably making sure that she's seen them. It hurts to see Catherine upset but IMO, both Catherine and Vincent aren't in a healthy state of mind to be together. I want them to spend time apart (and not with other lovers ) just re-discovering who they are. I want Vincent to get all his memories back because I can't imagine the pain, hurt and guilt he will feel once he remembers Catherine and his love for her and realise the pain he has put her through.
Then I want him to FIGHT for her, to beg and grovel and 'romance' his way back to her heart. I want him to earn her and her love.
So I'm waiting and praying for Vincent 1.0 to return. If he doesn't, then I want THIS Vincent to fall deeply and madly in love with Catherine after she walks away from him and all his *rap, making him earn her love.
I just LOVE this show and I hate to see us Beasties split over it. We are stronger together than we are apart and I truly believe that the best is yet to come.
Just remembered one thing, Tori as a human was never attracted to Vincent. She wanted him to help her. We even saw her trying to avoid him during dinner. There is no love triangle here. Its the 'animal DNA' in them that is causing this reaction.
Next weeks episode is Man or Beast so I guess we will see V struggling with both sides. I hope his humanity wins out ;)
By the way, it's the first time I write this much! But I guess good episodes bring it out in us fans. We shout and yell and scream all over the net because we care. Jay was right, there will be lots of yelling on twitter this season AND lots of consumption of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream. LOL
Thanks for the review lilith! Hope from now on our beloved show takes a turn towards healing and rediscovering the love and passion between its most loved couple, VINCAT! <3
Word!
ReplyDelete"but I find myself doing the same as well, especially during every single episode of season 2. It's becoming exhausting."
So true for me too. It's like I'm trying to like and establish a connection with this new and apparently 'improved' Vincent but it's not happening. I give up!
I agree with you. I have been willing them to break up since about reunion because to me, I've never actually seen them as being 'together'.
ReplyDeleteShe's holding on to this idea of Vincent that is not the one we see before us. He's trying his best and failing miserably to get what they has back (even though he doesn't even know what that is) and the more he tries, the more I feel she pulls back. Which is 100% understandable.
It's too much. I personally don't want them together where there isn't even a single glimmer of the trust the once had present at this point.
I really need for them to deal separately with everything that has happened and the toll these unfortunate circumstances have taken on them.
LOL I think you explained everything I wanted to say in just a few paragraphs ;)
ReplyDeleteBoth Catherine and Vincent are trying but it's just not working at the moment. He tells her he's good and can control it when it really isn't true. And Catherine needs to get her life back on track without Vincent. Only when they both deal with their issues can they set on the journey of rediscovering their love.
Yes. To me they have been lying to themselves and finally in this ep they admitted to each other and to themselves that they are not fine. They are not doing well. I'm glad that they've finally verbalized this (cause I've been feeling it too) so they both can start repairing themselves separately.
ReplyDeleteHi Lilith, to me this was the best episode of the season also in terms of character portrayal and development. i know it is hard on beasties, but it was a better episode than others in many ways. i can finally piece the things together, also in terms of why vincat have been off in season 2. it is building up brilliantly i think now. i think next week they will sink even further, and once they are down in the dumps, that is when they will fully realise what is wrong and start rebuilding their lives initially individually and then as a couple. this week BATB regained its credibility again in my eyes, which it was losing. .also this was one of the few episodes this season that i was compelled to re-watch again and again and again. i have watched it many times already and i know i will more
ReplyDeleteO Lilith why?? I'm kinda shocked that you would mention the words toxic and abusive about Vincent when he is the VICTIM and I will always defend him 100% as I adore his conflicted Beast 2.O self ~ for better or for worse. That being said I disagree with many Beasties and you apparently for thinking Vincent set up that kiss with Tori. He couldn't help but be drawn to her ("she kissed me" yeah right ~not buying THAT) and only used it to initiate a break up with Cat subsequently.
ReplyDelete~ Agree that Bad BoB is Best Character for this ep. Loved his dastardly manipulations.
~ I wanted Gabe's heart ripped out after Reunion but he was likeable again this episode without stupid Tess around to wind him up about Cat. Totally agree with you that he should stay this way and not hit on Cat.
~ Agree with your WTF. WORST for me was the JTnT kiss. SO fake and gross. Would rather they remain as BroTP. Yes I think she's way too manly for JT . I couldn't care less about Tess especially if she keeps up her anti-V pro-Gabe stance. (Aside : what is with that ugly fuzz on JT)
~ Always though Condor was a codeword to let Reynolds know it was Vincent on the line.
~ A female beast was an interesting addition especially since Tori was born this way and made me wonder what VinCat's baby would be like if Vincent was never cured BUT I wish they had cast a much younger shebeast so we could remove said sickening beastlie attraction between her and Vincent and he could play a big bro role instead. I feared Tori was Trouble for ViinCat the second Vincent hugged her in the woods even tho Amber who plays her insisted she's not a love interest. Right now she's just a b***h in heat and I can't wait for her to be gone! (Altho I confess the kiss was weirdly hot :O ugh damn you Vincent! He makes everything sexy!).
I like this new setup ~ feels neater and easier to read. B- seems about right.
Zuzu, I agree with you. We can't lose our hope.
ReplyDeleteThank you Thank you, you've verbalized everything I've been feeling of course no one likes the way he's treating Cat but he's really not in control of what he's doing every one forgets beast or man, he's endured unspeakable stuff done to him for 3 mo. He's struggling, he's trying to find his way back
ReplyDeleteLilith, I like the new format, the synopsis and breakdown of each character, however this is the very first review I have to respectfully disagree on your assessment of dear old Vincent you went there calling our wounded hero toxic, I will admit it hasn't been easy watching Cat suffer so much V had unspeakable things done to him in those 3mos he wants things right between them, that bio/dad stole the show the way he manipulated everyone he's really an amazing actor, but about Cat we know she likes bad boys, Vincent is a bad boy with no choice of his own, Thanks for the review although I didn't feel your usual optimism
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said and i can't believe every Beasties don't understand
ReplyDeleteI get that Vincent is a victim, I do but I just need VinCat to be written better. It's kind of like saying forgive your neighbor's dog who mauled your baby because he came from an abused home. I get what they are doing to the character but I DO NOT LIKE IT.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever look up the fifteen signs of domestic abuse, VinCat is rapidly checking off points on that, that's all I'm saying. Also, the show is starting to lose it's 'girl power' appeal that initially drew me and is being replaced with subtle misogynistic undertones.
I'm also not denying that there's a 'beastly spark' between Vincent and Tori but just break that scene down I get where Beasties who see it the other way are coming from but I also think that the writer wrote that scene a particular way so when it comes time to redeem dear Vincent it won't be such a hard pill to swallow for Cat (or the beasties).
I'm sorry my disappointment seeped through. Next week is the mid-season finale, we have a death hanging over our heads and VinCat has another huge bomb about to be dropped on them that might make some beasties leave permanently. I fear our chances at renewal and what happens when we return and quite possibly end up on a Friday and have even lower ratings. It's just so much on the BatB front to take in. I'm worried about our show and I'm worried about our fandom.
I'm glad there are Beasties out there on Vincent's side. I was there until very recently. But I think it also has to do with the lack JT and Vincent bonding time on top of all of this. Why hasn't he at least asked JT to try come up with something that will help jog his memory or un-brainwash him. Actually, why hasn't Cat asked? It just doesn't seem like they're doing all they can do to fix the problem is all. I don't feel like Vincent is trying to resist the dark side, he has tunnel vision. He made a good point about how all the killings might be taking a toll on him even if that wasn't the case. As I said i think it's great material for Jay Ryan to work with but me personally, if I was a BatB writer, I would have chosen something different and at least rewarded us Beasties a little before doing all of this to VinCat.
ReplyDeleteAs I said last week, I was really hoping that they would make the Tori/Vincent relationship a big bro/lil sis situation but they opted to go for the unnecessary rehashed drama. But I swear, I don't see any chemistry between Tori and Vincent AT ALL.
I agree on so MANY levels! “But I didn’t come to the party for the appetizers; I came for the main course.” Nailed it!! lol That sums it up perfectly!! I too like Bob and what he brings. My favourite bad guys are the ones who can make you see them as bad then the next minute your buying the BS they're selling and believe he’s genuine. lol Gabe, I like him as an actor and as a character but like you said...when he’s being smart and helpful and not pinning for Cat. Tori, well I hope she has a slow death in the fire. (sadly I know she won’t) I hate the thought of screen time being wasted on her. I want to see the people I care about and what’s happening in their lives now and how they came to be the people they are. I DO NOT care about what happens or happened to Tori. I will do a happy dance when she is gone!! What I am desperately trying to figure out is what would make the writers think we the fans would WANT her to stick around after that kiss?! Seriously?? And should the writers take this one step further and they sleep together?.....well! I can’t even say it!! I keep coming back to one question...WHY a red head?! They had to know it would be like putting salt on an open wound. They MUST have a reason, right? I’m beginning to wonder if the red hair will be a trigger for his memories. It’s a stretch, but there has to be a reason in my mind. Ugh! This is one episode I will not be watching over and over! It’s my least favourite by far. I could watch the Alex episodes over this one to be honest. In my eyes, the only way to recover the damage they’ve done to Vincent’s character and to VinCat is in the next episode have Vincent grow a backbone against the beastly connection (before any more lines are crossed) and make Cat his first choice (unlike the feeling of being second choice to Alex). At which point he will need to invest in knee pads cause he’ll need to spend a fair amount of time on his. JMO
ReplyDeleteOld V can handle things better when he fall in love with Cat. Now he's supercharge and don't remember himself, JT or Cat so I'm not really surprise he's more Beast. Now he's conflicted about it. Give him the time to process and fight back. He don't understand why but he still feel this pull, he still has the instinct to protect her, with the flashs he starts to trust her and to realise what she does for him, he wants to remember her more than anything. Don't you think it's something?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if I liked this episode... still trying to figure this out. Vincent barely remembers Cat and too be honest I think he is not good for her at this point. He has been violent and Abusive and I think Cat's walking away is a good thing but I would like to have see that she did that on her own not Vincent telling her to walk away. When Vincent kissed Tori (I do not care for what reason) he crossed a line in my book. I hope we do not have to see that he is going to sleep with her because that will be the end of VINCAT.... at least I think so.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to see the mid season finale but I have to admit that Vincent can only make one choice to be a man because if he chooses to be a beast I think a lot of fans will walk away perminently because that will be definetly be the end of Vincat and I really hope that this will not happen
I don't understand how Vincent can be blamed for things that are not his fault or for choices that others have made for him. When someone practically steals your life and you are expected to pick up the pieces in a month? Really? That seems unfair.
ReplyDeletePersonally, as much as I like VinCat, neither of them are in a good place separately let alone together. I think that they should have never made them keep pretending that they were 'together' for the past couple of eps, it has made this relationship look so bad.
They should have let them be around each other but at a distance to sort themselves out.
Yeah, I think you are absolutely right. I was judging Vincent but after reading your remarks I are can relate to that...Thanks...
ReplyDeleteI liked the episode. Parts of it were hard to watch like the Tori stuff and Bob manipulation stuff, but I'm not mad at Vincent. I feel like the writers showed he heard Cat's heartbeat so he knew he was approaching right before he let Tori kiss him and that's why he let Tori kiss him. Plus, see the way he didn't pull away immediately when he saw Cat, but made sure to slowly turn and look at her while still kissing Tori to make sure she saw. That isn't a normal oh crap I got caught reaction. He then responded with a cover story so she would believe he has been accidentally caught in the act Ben though he did it on purpose. It isn't cheating to me because he did it knowing Cat was watching to get her to leave him. And he knew he had to sacrifice his relationship to help Cat bc Bob was going to turn her in if he didn't disappear out of her life. and let's be honest Cat would be her strong we can fight this together if he was just like I am running your life so I am disappearing out of your life. He had to break her heart so she wouldn't come after him. I get it and he did it for her not because he had feelings for story. I don't get the Vincent outrage. He didnt cheat! He kissed Tori bc of Cat not feelings for Tori! His character is taking a dark turn and I prefer the reluctant vigilante of season 1 with season 2 V confidence, but I feel like it ends next episode. Everyone see this arc out. It ends in one episode and try to understand the character's motivations. And where is the Vincent sympathy? I get it is hard to see Cat hurting but I think the arc after this next episode will be about her focusing on her stuff and not getting shafted as much. Vincent was brainwashed and turned into this against his will! Bob stole and kidnapped and bran washed the love of his daughter's life! And prob killed her bio dad since he was run over! Where is the Bob outrage?! He doesn't even have beast DNA and is worst than Vincent manipulating them all albeit to protect Cat. She was better off with V before he intervened though! And where is the Gabe outrage? Gabe threw Cat and V around and tried to kill Cat and yet he is cool now and V is the devil?! Gabe's character wasn't hurt beyond repair?! Ugh I hate when people say someone's character is damaged beyond repair. All the comments on twitter and here are so negative and I feel short-sighted. No offense. Yes I agree Vincat are off but I also think that is the point! V still doesn't remember being in love with C or wanting her all those ten years! Give it time. You know Jr and KK still have the chemistry. We still see it. It's just not the same bc they are in a rough patch. I'm okay with them taking a break but the character hate needs to stop IMO. They will figure stuff out and come back together. Again, I don't get the Vincent outrage. He didnt cheat! He kissed Tori bc of Cat not feelings for Tori. I'm not mad at him. It wasn't a real kiss or cheating bc of that! People do that all the time in shows, too! It's to hurt someone so they will finally let you go! And Cat is strong to me because she is making the most out of a bad situation and is fighting for their future and love. I'm okay with her taking a break but she isn't weak bc she realizes V's brain and memory and self control were fed with. It isn't his fault! He didn't ask for it!
ReplyDeleteEverything you wrote is the truth. There is absolutely NO outrage for what Bob has done. He manipulated every and anyone.
ReplyDeletePeople LOVE Gabe just because he's 'good' now. Yes cause trying to kill someone for your personal gain is excusable. The Vincent hate is absolutely the definition of a double standard.
No problem. I just feel like we need to see both sides and how much Vincent is hurting as much as Cat here. If he was a 'normal' guy and not someone with the added complications of being a beast and dealing with that, I would also be up in arms BUT he is a beast. Things are not black and white, he has suffered and is still suffering because of this. I can't imagine trying to be normal but these beast complications keep messing with your life.
ReplyDeleteAwesome awesome way to put everything I've been thinking into words.
ReplyDeleteSo much to say, I like the new format, agree with most of what you say & believe in my heart there is an evil presence in the writers room saying "Let's make the Tori character a red head just mess with the beasties!" LOL! But overall I like how you presented your thoughts. I still see the good in Vincent and the conflict he is struggling with. What would be very helpful is to have the back story about what Muirfield did to him to make him this way. Early on, he said they told him he volunteered for the missions? Lets see this mind control. Yes with the inconsistencies regarding who is Condor! Other reviewers thought they had it wrong but it was the writers that missed that detail! Please tweet them & ask! I liked Gabe this week but still DO NOT trust him. Maybe Tori is going to trigger his beast again? Who knows. Definitely missing the chemistry between Jay & Kristin, hope it is written that way. Never a Jaystin person just loved how well they played the characters but no heat this season at all. Hotheads was the only time that we saw any real VinCat connection. Just not there, not even believing V feels bad about leaving her. Spot on with Catherine's inconsistencies as a character, that needs to tighten up!
ReplyDeleteOkay, Loved the JT/Tess interaction. Hope there is a lot more development of Tess, really good description of what they did right there. Especially with Austin Basis, you are very good at putting into words how we all feel about him & why there is such a strong connection to him. He really is the heart of the show. Hope there is a serious development between the two but let it take time! No rushing, glad they have each other. Will listen to the podcast this week as well, again, thank you so much for all the time you spend on helping the show & interacting with us and putting our thoughts in to words! Great job!
This is my favorite review so far. I like this review format better because it gives more opportunity for analysis and a better understanding of the episodes. I also like the idea of leaving a link for the standard format. Thanks for your hard work in all your reviews.
ReplyDelete"I’m not feeling the chemistry between VinCat right now (and the writers assure us it’s written into the script that way)."
I am not sure I understand why the writers think leaving out an essential part of the series for so many episodes is a good idea.
I understand some comments that Vincent has been through a lot/is complicated and it will take more than a month for him to overcome this. Yet, I feel like things are going in circles now. I wouldn't mind it so much if things were moving forward, but I don't see progress in Vincent's character development. Like you said its 10 steps back. Maybe I just need to be patient?
BATB fans are great in supporting this show but writers should not take them as granted. The best asset they had was the great chemistry and relationship between the two leading characters . They could sell ice cream to eskimos with that . You don't keep Batb audience hooked sacrificing their relationship for redhaired chicks , the beast of the week , animal instincts or JT&T romance (sorry JT , I love you but....) . At the end of the day is all about Vincent and Catherine and their personal ,human and family backgrounds which right now have been badly or briefly explored .
ReplyDeleteOkay I am sorry. I was so caught up in VinCat emotions that I forgot to mention how much I LOVED the moment the church bells rang outside Reynolds' house. And the expression of realisation that clouded Cat's and Gabe's faces. It was a mixture of horror and shock and so intense! Kudos to the director and the actors because I really FELT that. Okay, that was random. Sorry, I was just discussing it with my sister and thought to post it here!
ReplyDeleteMy sister's thoughts after reading your comment: Apparently, 'epic love' means one person constantly having their heart bwing stomped all over again and again by the person who is supposedly their soulmate.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: If I were the writer, I'd cash on what made the show such a cult favourite instead of ignoring it. But sadly I'm just a fan.
Agreed I think that was my favorite part of the episode :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think Vincent is in love with Cat . He has a physical connection with her , or sort of, but I don't see a real emotional connection . Does he really care about her ? Not sure because his actions don't match his words. But on the other hand, Catherine forgive and forget soooo easily - Vincent , Gabe , Bio dad . Where's the strong , indipendent woman I saw in S1 ? Being unselfish in love is good if the relationship is healthy and reciprocal. You give some, you get some but being unselfish in a negative (abusive is too much for me ) one-way relationship is not only stupid but dangerous. Should be interesting to know what Kristin Kreuk think about her character. Does she like it ? mmmm. But Yesterday episode was really good !
ReplyDeleteAnother great tittle. I think the new format was absolutely necessary for the episode. I agree with a lot of your assessments.
ReplyDeleteI (@itslulim) fight for Vincent all the time! I have even written post on tumblr defending the writing, Vincent and the direction in regards to why I am not giving up on BATB and I am not. And saying that Vincent is a Victim…but what I find myself asking is for HOW long? How many things are we supposed to choke up to “he was abducted”.
While Agent R was manipulative to the bone and I hated him in the episode hatting the messenger does not invalidate the message which is “when is it enough?” Writing Vincent edgy and unpredictable is good, oh but the thin red line you tow because it can back fire and make the character unlikable which is the case with V. And he makes a lot of excuses for himself and doesn’t hold himself account for anything especially for someone who wants to regain his humanity.
When I watch a CW show I accept love triangles are part of the deal whether I like it or not since that’s their mantra but I love BATB so I will tolerate. But I do not like rehashed story lines the kiss
with Tory was screaming like the whole Alex story line with the kiss and the excuse and everything. He did not do it for the benefit of Catherine. The minute he said “ I can’t” or “ I shouldn’t” he knew it was wrong and did it anyways. Let’s see since he start talking to Cat two woman has thrown themselves at V (different circumstance but that’s life or TV life) and he has cheated or went for it both times. He is at 100% cheating rate. Controlling your impulses is part of the “meant to be deal”. I love when couples go through hardship, fight , break each other’s heart and endure cause love requires patience and forgiveness and such but if your man went for every red hair… in the south we call that man “hound dog” . The love triangle Vincat/Gabe/Tori could have happened after Vincent walks away and they both need comfort V with his Beast & Cat with her millionaire boss. I still would have hated it but at least it would have been new!!!
Even if this is a show is mythology based sci-fi it’s based on one of the oldest real human virtues, TRUE LOVE and finding that someone. If that’s the case the message cannot be Vincent does whatever he was wants then begs for forgiveness – she takes him back. We have had couple of cycles of the “do bad –and woo” already and BATB is only on the second season. I love the show, I LOVE VinCat. It hurts to me to say or even admit out loud that it hurts me to watch them on screen and their chemistry I LOVE so much isn’t there. But just because I love the show I can’t say I love the episodes or the characters or the storylines because there is a lot of borrowed and rehashed materials from season one it makes it lazy writing for me. And there is no need create drama for the sake of a drama because there is enough hardship and struggles in the premise of beauty and the beast.
I am sorry for the long post. I love all the opposing thoughts that are posted. Thanks for Lilith for giving us this avenue via a review.
Yes I love "aha moments" on TV shows and real life and BOY that was a great aha moment!! Loved
ReplyDeleteI don't think Vincent is in love with Cat at all. How is he supposed to be in live with her at the point? He knows that there is something there obviously BUT I think he is being with her at this stage to find that emotional connection and discover that love.
ReplyDeleteLikewise, I don't think Cat is in love with Vincent or at least the V we have now. She is running on fumes of the old V and acting as if it is all okay. None of this is okay for either of them.
I think enough is enough for all of them. Their 'relationship' if we can even call it that at this point was rushed into because both of them were grasping at proverbial straws: cat on to this memory of V and their s1 relationship and V on to this past that he doesn't even remember.
ReplyDeleteIf they didn't break up I don't think I could support the scary trajectory the relationship was going. It was too dangerous to both of them. They need a separation for them to heal after all this trauma.
I really had a problem with the dialog in this episode. The writer seemed to forget what happened in the first half of the episode and previous episodes and wanted to make sure we forgot it too. It became very annoying.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly Vincent killed Windsor to save his daughter. But at the end of episode 6, he justifies his actions because Windsor was trying to kill him. Which is what we saw on our screen. But four times in episode 7, the reason for killing Windsor was changed to "saving his daughter"
Gabe at the precinct, looking at his computer screen says that he had the Muirfield files from when "WE" blew them up. He wasn't there! How could the writer make that mistake. Another misstep: Catherine is surprised to see Tori at Reynolds house. Later she apologizes to Reynolds saying "if I had known (she was a beast) I wouldn't have brought her" She didn't bring her, she brought Vincent. And another one, "Don't you own a tie" Vincent: "No" but we saw him in a suit and tie in episode 3. Okay so maybe it was rented.
Another discrepancy that I found interesting is suddenly Gabe is worried that Tori might try the defibrillator treatment. He was gleefully chasing beasts around with a defibrillator under his arm waiting to murder them with Catherine as his approving accomplice . He used the excuse that he was sure it would work. Suddenly he is totally against it. The writer didn't remember that he enjoys euthanasing beasts.
I was appreciating the continuity of season 2. I am very sorry to see it leave.
I find that Catherine is becoming like a parrot. She just repeats whatever anyone else tells her about Vincent. She believes anything bad if it relates to Vincent. It seems pretty clear that she doesn't have the upper hand with this new improved Vincent and she resents it.
ReplyDeleteEpisode 7 was a perfect example of her parroting. Reynolds tells her he is dangerous and she has to decide when enough is enough and she repeats the conversation word for word to Vincent. In the first four episodes, she pushes and pushes and then when she gets him where she wants him she doesn't want him. She is confusing and mean spirited to him constantly. Finally after 29 episodes he doesn't absorb all the blame on himself. A great scene was when he arrives at the boat and overhears her telling the team that he was dangerous and out of control which is why his handler wants him dead. He accuses her of investigating him and that is the reason his handler wants him dead. Good for you Vincent.
And in the Reynolds bedroom when she is talking on the phone with Gabe and doesn't want him exposed. Vincent asks her why she doesn't want to out Gabe but doesn't mind outing him. Way to go Vincent.
After Vincent beasts out against Reynolds she demands he apologize even if he must get down on his knees because otherwise it might expose Gabe. What a way to make your 'boyfriend' feel special.
She has to work hard to earn my forgiveness for her coldness during Reunion. Vincent saved her life by killing his new found long time friend. She couldn't spare one thought for him about that. He spills his heart about how he could have been like Zach except for her. And her reply? "There are a lot of cops, you better leave" What a terrible frozen statement. I haven't forgiven her for her lies to him and then having the gall to say her lies were okay but his weren't. I haven't forgiven her for telling him he was bought and paid for.
I would never apologize for anything he does. He seems to be the only rational one out of the entire bunch of them. I am always amazed at how forgiving he is, especially to Catherine. She leads the way into some insane predicaments that he always pays the price for. The Heather dinner, this Thanksgiving dinner. The raid on Muirfield's computer center in Playing with Fire, trusting Gabe in season 1, causing Vincent to be captured.
sorry to keep replying and promise to be short. Lilith, you are so right. There is no chemistry between Tori and Vincent. There isn't any chemistry between Tori and the camera or Tori and the viewers. She is not very convincing in this role.
ReplyDeleteJay Ryan is commanding in his role. I have never seen such a character development as what he has done with this Vincent. Everything about his portrayal is compelling. I love his dark side when his eyes get all black and threatening and when he is tracking and senses his prey. I love the way he prowls and the way he walks purposefully. and I love the way he looks at Catherine. This is an amazing portrayal and I am in it for the ride.
Thank you for telling the truth, I've been feeling bad for Cat but in reality she has been treating him like crap going all the way to season one, hot and cold, I did like that V got back at her abut her wiling to out him but not Gabe she loves V but she makes him suffer for that love
ReplyDeleteI love your comments. I'm all in with you girls!!!
ReplyDeleteJay Ryan is a gift. We are blessed to have him play the role of Vincent in all of his iterations.
ReplyDeleteThank for seeing both sides of this. Cat has never and will never truly be called out about HALF the crazy and also hurtful things she does. She hasn't been a perfect angel either but as usual V gets the brunt of the abuse. Both of them have been awful to each other but V is always vilified. Thanks for pointing out the double standard.
ReplyDeletelike your recap, as always. i must say this new format is actually easier on the eyes. but the kiss…. oh the kiss. as much as i don't like it, it just have to happen coz it hurt cat the most. all this season she kept saying she had enough, it's too much, bla bla bla but she kept going back to Vincent. so that's one slap on the face she needed to wake up! she needs to be happy and she's in denial in thinking that Vincent 1.0 is still there. NOW she can start her self-discovering journey. As for Vincent, no i'm not saying he kissed Tori just to push Cat away. He did that because he is a BEAST. no much human just BEAST who's no longer control of himself, and it took all that episodes for him to admit that instead of saying he's in control. But yes, right now it's like "so what happen to the epic love between them?"Well, i guess we have to just wait and see :) Maybe Vincent will see Cat kissing other guy (just like she n Evan last season) and that jealousy will cause strong emotions in Vincent that he'll finally snap out of his amnesia.
ReplyDeleteI actually felt weird seeing JT and Tess kissing but they are so damn adorable. They provided the lightness and comic relief from this otherwise very heavy episode. And i've been asking about Tori's eyes too? apparently no many noticed it. first it was yellow, then brownish or amberish, then silverfish.. makes me wonder what kind of power does this she beast has.
Looking forward for next week with you. definitely looked like a very rough and fast ride..
Thanks Sue.
ReplyDeleteI do want to keep us Beasties together I truly do. But so many of them are VinCat or bust (which IS the foundation of the show) that I can't even fault them for being upset. I have full confidence that by episode 2.13 things will get better. Next week, all during the hiatus, I will be a shining beaming light of optimism, I swear. We're going to have to mobilize and batten down the hatches and keep BatB in the spotlight this whole winter hiatus so get ready. We all need hope and I'm glad most of us still have some.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lilith, now that's the awesome Beastie that I've become a big fan of, I know the rest of the Beastie nation know you Rock ,Thanks for all you do, I'm gonna do my part to, I hope you know we really really Appreciate you!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSarahross1122, you are so right in this:
ReplyDelete"You don't keep Batb audience hooked sacrificing their relationship for redhaired chicks"
I laughed when I read and I can only hope the writers/producers get it soon!
Great re-cap Lillith! Loving this new format btw..it breaks the episode down by character, and I really like that! Anyhow, I absolutely loved this last episode! From beginning to end it was awesome! So here's my view: I get that fans are worried about the VinCat relationship (or lack thereof) but we need to remember that this show is called BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! At it's very core, it will always be about this amazing love story and their journey to be together! Are they in a bad place right now? Do they have huge obstacles to overcome? Absolutely! The fun for me, is watching these characters 'rise from the ashes' so to speak, and find their way back to each other. No doubt Vincent is in a very scary place right now, and he is not the same man/beast we all fell in love with in S1. He has done some pretty horrible things, however, he is a Victim! He has had his entire life stolen....twice! This new and darker Vincent is so compelling, and his struggle to regain his humanity vs his wanting to give into his beast instincts is so much fun to watch! As for the whole Tori kiss...did I cringe when that happened? Hell yeah! However, I think that kiss was more about his beastly nature, and him trying to push Catherine out of his life to protect her, rather than any real desire to be with Tori. OK..now loved the JT and Tess scenes...they were so cute together, and it really was one of the brighter spots of the episode! Daddy Reynolds was awesome! The man we all love to hate! I think Ted Whitall stole the show in this episode with his portrayal of daddy dearest! The way he balanced the cold manipulation with the sometimes genuine concern for his daughter was fun to watch! Overall, this was such a great episode! Unfortunately, I think that things will only get worse in 2x08 before they can even begin to get better. Have faith Beasties! I trust the journey that the writers are taking us on and I am loving this roller coaster ride immensely!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just want to say that the writer of this particular episode, Wendy Straker Hauser, did confirm that the kiss between Vin and Tori was because of the animal attraction. It wasn't because he was trying to make Cat turn away. She confirmed it via twitter.
ReplyDelete
