‘Plot holes, continuity errors, bad judgment and easy fixes, oh my!’

OK, first things first, time to get the Beastie morale up a little bit…

So, awesome job, we are 3 for 3, when it comes to double trending on Twitter worldwide, here in the states. Even without any cast members officially live tweeting with us, we did it. We held our #3 rank on Get Glue from last week as well.

We need to hope for the best but prepare for the worse. I want to encourage each and every one of you Beasties out there to participate in Rooftop Notes campaign. You can find all the information here.

Now on to your regularly scheduled recap…

Up for discussion this week is episode 2x05: Reunion. This week’s episode was written by a painfully obvious new writer, Eric Tuchman. We also had a new director, Fred Gerber. Let’s just say, I’m not in hurry to see either one of them return.

I’m just going to address this big pink elephant in the room. They messed up the formula. Beasties want to begin and end an episode with VinCat, not Cat and Gabe. Stop trying to make Gatherine/Gat/Cabe/Chanwen (they don’t even a good shipping name, how do the writers expect us to get behind it, for Pete’s sake?) happen. I want to like Gabe but he is fast becoming persona non grata, much like Tess for a large portion of the Beasties I know. I don’t know what’s going on with her. While she brought the sass and the funny, there was a certain oomph missing that I can’t put my finger on. Gabe has flat out admitted not only his sexual attraction for Cat but his romantic intentions are broadcasting loud and clear as well. With a death hanging over the fandom’s head and so many parallels to Evan Marks, we might want to break out the white calla lilies for Gabe’s grave. For the life of me, I cannot understand why the writers would try to shove this pairing in our face, if the reason isn't they're going to kill off Gabe.

I’ve gotten ahead of myself, excuse me. This week we open the episode with the beast of the week on the hunt. When he kicks the door into Vincent’s unlocked houseboat, it becomes apparent that he is on the hunt for Vincent. Right off the back, viewers become pretty certain this won’t end well for the beast of the week. One does not simply tread on Vincent’s territory without consequences.

To lighten up the mood, we have a giddy Cat on the phone with Gabe. Cat has enlisted Gabe’s help in the hunt for her birth father. I personally, would have asked JT, hacker extraordinaire but hey, what do I know? Gabe assures her that he doing his very best despite hitting a few brick walls. He notices the pop music in the background. Cat tells him that she’s channeling her high school days in order to prepare for a pre-reunion get together with her closest gal pals from that time. She laments about the fashions and Gabe is quick to assure she would look good in just about anything. Aware of mental slip he rushes off of the phone, much to my relief.

Next up to bat is Vincent. He comes wandering into Cat’s bedroom via the fire escape because he wasn’t sure if he was allowed to use the front door. He wants to “trigger” some memories. Cat’s surprised to see him. But she is not having any of what Vincent is serving. She has decided she needs some time to herself and suggests he go hang out with JT and try to trigger some memories with him. Vincent licks his wounds and out he goes as Cat’s friends arrive.

Back at the 125th Precinct, Gabe is getting chewed out by the major. Tess barrages in as usual and begrudgingly asks what’s wrong, as well as for a raise. Gabe explains just what a mess Joe left as well as the pressures of keeping all the new beast related cases under wraps. Gabe seems a little stressed and with good reason. This leads me to wondering if something is about to give to move the story in whole other direction in regards to beasts and how Team Beastie hunts them. Perhaps, we’ll those answers next week.

Meanwhile, Cat is having a good old time with her three gal pals from high school. Everyone seems to have a rather fun, interesting and fulfilled life. They of course are jealous of Cat’s itty bitty waste that hasn’t changed since 10th grade. They also reveal that Cat has always liked “bad boys” and guys who were projects; the implication for the viewer being that some things never change, which a lot of Beasties got fired up over and with good reason. Mr. Tuchman, you did not read the room well on that front, sir.

Since we didn’t get any JT last week, I suppose they ordered a JT and Vincent bonding scene. But if you blinked you might have missed it. Then we were back to Cat’s place as she bids her visitor adieu. Beth, of course has left her purse in the bedroom. Cat goes to retrieve and sees a figure “hiding” behind the curtain. She mistakenly thinks it’s Vincent. But it is not Vincent. It’s that beast from the beginning of the episode. Vincent’s trail has lead him to Cat. Vincent scent is all over her (and it reminds me of Buffy when Angel tells Buffy that he can smell Spike all over her). He demands for Cat to tell him where Vincent is. He calls Cat a bitch, which totally caught me off guard and begins to get rough with her. Cat miraculously is able to hold her own against a beast, an non-tranquilized beast mind you (I swear there better be something more to her otherwise it’s just a bit ridiculous), she even gets a good kick in which draws blood and a few shoots off at the beast. The beast gets scared off and jumps through window and down to street. Did I mention that all while this was going on Ms. Beth was right there witnessing the events? No? Well, she was. Did I mention Beth was a reporter? No? Well, she is. That can’t be good.

A pair of uniformed officer show up to take Cat and Beth’s statement. Beth is telling them what she know she saw. They don’t believe her. While Cat feels bad about the lies she’s telling, what else can she do but cover it up. Beth wants to know why Cat is seemingly covering this up. Cat convinces her that she is thinking of Beth and her credibility as a reporter. Beth is like a dog with a bone, she’s not going to drop it.

Of course word gets around the 125th precinct that Cat has been attacked and Gabe and Tess show up. Gabe looks like he could use one of JT’s antacids and Tess is going off on another one of her anti-beasts tirades. Cat realizes that she has a piece of the puzzle, some of her assailant’s blood on her shoe. Gabe wants to keep this from Vincent, so he doesn’t go off all half-cocked against an unknown beast. Tess could care less she lumps all the beast together. Gabe rushes off to have JT analyze the blood and Tess keeps tabs on the investigation.

Gabe shows up to JT’s place so he can analyze the blood and tells him about what happened to Cat, not knowing Vincent is there. Gabe tries to get Vincent to stand down but to no avail. Vincent rushes to Cat’s aid. This also results in him being able to track the attacker down to an old abandoned church. The beast of the week is an old army buddy of Vincent’s and Vincent actually remembers him during the confrontation. Vincent stands down and invites him back to the lair.

Cat heads over to JT’s place and not too shortly after her arrival, in comes Vincent with Zack in tow. JT recognizes Zack. But is still leery. Cat is downright perturbed and isn’t buying any of Zack’s phony ma’ams and charm. But Vincent swears that it was all just a misunderstanding and he has explained to Zack how important she is to him.

Fuming, Cat heads over to the precinct to catch up with Tess and whine about how Vincent is siding with Zack and how she should probably not go to her reunion. Tess squashes that and tells Cat to go and have some fun, finally. I agree and even more vigorously when we cut to the next scene and JT, Vincent and Zack are out shooting pool and reminiscing about the good old days. Zack brings up a girl and of course Vincent doesn’t remember. But a waitress that resembles the girl in question triggers a few sexy memories. Zack reveals that Gabriela was his girl and Vincent stole her from him and now he’s going to make Vincent pay by hurting Cat. But not before he beasts out and causes a scene in public.

While that was going on, Agent Reynolds has come snooping around asking questions about Cat’s attack. He offers his help on the investigation but Gabe gives him another assignment, to help track down Cat’s birth father. I chuckle just a bit. Gabe also decides it’s OK to read Agent Reynolds in on the case much to a reluctant Tess’s dismay but she rolls with it. She has discovered that the DNA matches with a cold case murder of a waitress named Gabriela. Agent Reynolds says he will look for Zack. This means he’s going to call Vincent and put him on the case. Which is just what he does, all the while calling Vincent soft and emotional and suggesting that Cat has made him this way.

Vincent wants to try and reason with Zack. He heads back to the church to talk to Zack. Zack doesn’t want to talk; he wants revenge and manages to allude Vincent’s grasp while taunting him about how he is going to take Cat away from him. Well, it was nice knowing you Zack. It’s a shame a pretty face such as Blair Redford’s couldn’t stick around and be a good guy but oh well, you hurt Cat, you called Cat a bitch and now you’re trying to kill her, sorry mister you have to take a dirt nap. Them there is the rules.

Cat has actually made it to her reunion with her friends and with their urging she goes radio silent. She checks in and of course the mean girl is the one to do it, complete with bitch face, snark and a whole lot of attitude. At least Cat gets to tear it up on the dance floor before her night out is interrupted. We learn that in high school Cat saved a nerdling a la Veronica Mars style which resulted in her having a geeky stalker who rocked the mascot uniform, she was voted ‘Most Likely To Succeed’ and she also started a campaign to help the school get a new pool. That leads to an interesting conversation about with Beth about how her father has been making rather large charitable donations toward the pool in her name. That includes this pass August, which is odd because her father died in July.

No time to dwell on that because Gabe and Tess are here to whisk her away to safety. Vincent shows up at damn near the same time with the same idea. Gabe tries to keep Cat to himself but it’s obvious that Cat would be safer with Vincent. Zack steals that creepy guy’s mascot uniform and proceeds to go on the hunt for Cat. Cat and Vincent manage to have a heart to heart about how Cat feels odd complaining about her small problems when they are compared to his. I would have preferred another dance scene but hey, you can’t win them all. Vincent smells him and a big old beast off ensues. The fight drives everyone out of the gymnasium and running for their lives. Zack nearly gets to Cat but Vincent snaps his neck just in the nick of time.

As Zack’s body is wheeled off in the distant the philosophical waxing between Gabe and Tess about how a patriotic solider ends up a deranged beast and dead at a high school reunion in Westchester is interrupted by Beth. She tries her hardest to get a scoop but is instantly shut down. Tess tells Gabe that his affections for Cat are obvious to her. Gabe wonders if Cat knows too. Tess says she doesn't think so.

Vincent apologizes to Cat. He talks to her about how crappy he feels because of all the things she has given up to protect him and to be with him. He promises her it won’t be like this for long. He also says he appreciates everything she has done for him and that he would be lost and more than likely would have ended up like Zack without her. He steals a soft, sweet kiss. Cat shoes him out and tells him to be sure to use the back door because the place is crawling with cops.

On his way out, he sees Gabe going to check on Cat. He stops and stares him down long and hard before leaving. Gabe tries to make with the funny and Cat tries to not let the night’s events get her down in the dumps. She starts sharing pictures from high school with Gabe and notices Agent Reynolds in the background of her graduation picture. She is also holding a donation card in her hand and looks back and forth between the two. This leads her to think that Agent Reynolds just might be her birth father.

Grade: B-

Reason: I really hope this is the lowest grade I give an episode all season. While I enjoyed this episode, there were far too many telltale signs of a new writer. Everyone felt a little out of character. The Gabe and Cat issue reared its ugly little head much to the dismay of a lot of Beasties (myself included). It wasn’t heavy on the action or the character development, which for me personally doesn’t make a good formula. After a beautiful episode like Hothead, to come back on this note was super disappointing. We were ready for passion, exploration and team work. Not Cat brushing Vincent off, like Jay-Z having dirt on his shoulder. Tons of continuity errors, plot holes and easy fixes.

Not to mention very little JT time. He’s starting to become a plot device. JT is the heart and soul and I’m beginning to believe the glue that holds this whole show together. When he isn’t around it’s like a flashing neon sign. When he’s underused it’s very noticeable as well. Maybe just maybe all new writers should be paired with a season 1 vet so that they can catch these issues before they make to our screen.

The guest stars saved the episode. I loved Annie Illonzeh as Beth and having the handsome Blair Redford on my screen (even if he was a douchebag) once more was nice to see. The stakes are raised and I have no doubt the combination of Brad Kern and Roger Grant will get this season’s first A+. I’m expecting awesome character development and amazing moves on the myth arc front.

Tess – She brought the funny, sass and heart as well as playful ribbing. I think my romantic Varwen ship has been sunk but I’m still all for a brotp between Tess and Gabe, if only to keep Gabe away from Cat.

Burning Questions

1. Did Cat ever get her shoe back?
2. Is that the last we’ve seen of Beth?

Polls

Last Week’s Results – Katy Perry’s Roar won but in the comments I saw a lot of people were suggesting Florence and the Machine’s Never Let You Go. Over the hiatus, I just might do another song off with these two options.

  1. Yes, I have a feeling that episode 2x08: Man or Beast is going to be all about how Gabe is still actually a beast. The fact that JT has demanded a blood sample shocks me to be honest.

  2. Thanks Brenda. I was super nervous about being completely honest, and I held back a little bit. I love this show but I tend to be an honest critic as well. It was still a good episode just disappointing after such an amazing episode like Hothead. As I said I'm sure we'll be back on track next week.

  3. I sgree that there wasn't enough VinCat but i disagree with character developement, maybe not as much as Hothead but it was there in the layers. Cat trying to find some of her own reality, Gabe actually admitting he cares for Cat, Reynolds exposing himself because he is concered about Cat, Vin admitting that Cat has given up alot for him no matter if he remembers or not, Vin showing that even though he has not had a memory of JT he still has the bromance and it waseasy, Vin not really trusting Gabe, Vin killing someone to save Cat even though he wanted to try and save him. This was the first time we saw some of old Vincent in trying to understand an old friend and save him, just not following orders. Each episode he is starting to think for hmself. It wasn't as emotional or as exciting as Hothead but i think it had good development.

  4. Oh darling you're totally in my headspace with this review. Had really high VinCat expectations after Hothead and this ep totally started on the wrong note and had me as confused as Vincent when Cat chose girltime over triggering memories with Vincent. Can't we even get a little playful kiss before she pushes him out? Next VinCat scene ~ same missed opportunity. Vincent rushes over to see Cat after the Beast attack and no physical concern expressed whaaaat?? Strike 2. Strike 3 Bloody Gabe stealing a VinCat moment at the end. Just No No NO. :( I never want to see another ep like this again. Oh Fred. Oh Eric. SMH. Thankfully next week's ep looks friggin amaaaazing!

Fave line ~ JT: You better talk faster.

Saving grace ~ Vincent saving Cat again when it really matters ~ Cat comes first and Cat knows it so that's good ♥

So this is why I don't love this ep as much as the other 4. No silly hating on Vincent's sexy fleshback ~ c'mon he's a dude ~ he was broken up with Alex at the time altho the time trajectory was fuzzy and he was definitely NOT cheating on Alex or Cat so all you V haters ~ chill with that. I don't want to hear that y'all stopped watching just because of one inconsistent ep. Season 2 has overall improved heaps so have your rant (like me if you need to!) and get back to watching BATB.

OK back to voting PCAs. We NEED this WIN Beasties ~ ROAR!

  5. Sorry about yesterday today hope you got my tweet. Another great review. Great representing for all the beef beasties have had with the episode and also with Batb this season. Great insight !!! I have answer for one of your burning questions - Cat's shoe is framed next to Gabe's bed where he rubs it everyday with eyes closed and imagine Cat....lol...You're welcome for the visual!

  6. You're right I just hate Gabe!!! He is so annoying
We need more of JT xD :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree with everything you just said 100% :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. I didn't hate this ep but it was not a favourite. You pretty much nailed it. I think what frustrated me so much wasn't even the ep but the fan reaction. You made a great point about it clearly being a new writer, you can feel it!

One dodgey ep and you wanto bail? Really 'fans'?? I completely understand the frustration but I will maintain that we didn't know VK pre-war so I don't expect him to be a saint or to not have had any other girlfriends (have you seen the man?) but I do expect some consistency.

For the life of me can someone answer the question why Gabe is chummy chummy with Reynolds even though Reynolds was after him in the s1 finale? Why JT/Tess is so underused? Why they have reduced Tess's character to a trope? And why JT/Tess can't recognise Reynolds? That is eating at me and a GIANT plothole.

Other than that, I agree, let's get back on track. Let's make it the romantic thriller it's supposed to be with a little consistency.

  9. No problem, hope Comcast got you all fixed up. And yes, that is quite the visual, LOL!

  10. Yeah I pretty much agree with everyone here. A much as I love BATB, this episode left me feeling quite disappointed and frustrated. Firstly, 3 out of 3 VinCat moments, were definitely too understated. All 3 moments had potential to be touching and special, but they all (mostly the 1st 2) were pretty disappointing. Catherine could have been more playful and warm to Vincent, even if she had to kick him out and they both should have been more touchy feely with each other when V went to see if C was alright after hearing about Zach's attack. And when the writers had a chance to redeem themselves in the end seen, they still had Cat sending V away instead of spending a little more time on their moment together which should have been far more special, given their circumstance at that time. It felt like this episode was shown out of order, like it should have been last week's ep and then followed by Hothead, as they had finally started to reconnect last week and then took a big step backwards this week and I would have been more forgiving of all this had Hothead not happened yet! Plus, there should be much more attention to Jt & V's relationship, and they had the perfect set up for a great scene with that couch moment (which I loved) but it was over in a blink of an eye! Also, I'm so tired of Tess encouraging Gabe, when she knows how much V & C love each other! I like Gabe and don't mind having something for V to get a little jealous over, but honestly I think Gabe and Tess would be better together, assuming he's not actually a bad guy in disguise. Finally, getting back to VinCat again, I didn't like that V had memories of a fling before any real memories of his love for Cat. I don't have any issue with seeing him with an old fling - in fact I would have liked it to have been a bit longer as it was pretty hot - but it's just that he remembered her so easily, before remembering the tenderness or the chemistry he shared with Cat. Really hope next week will be much better and VinCat make some serious progress, so I can put these negative feelings behind me :(

    ReplyDelete
  11. Amen. And so he remember this Gabriela that easily but nothing about cat even after they had sex 0.0?
And cat seems to become her own beast.

    ReplyDelete
  12. love your "dirt nap" comment - that made me laugh. I did enjoy this episode but couldn't figure out why it felt kind of flat - which is unusual for me - reading your review and I had "OH that's why" moments. :D I too was mystified by Gabe being in the end with Cat and sharing her pictures instead of Vincent - that's just wrong on all sorts of levels. Looking forward to next weeks episode. :D

  13. Great recap and thanks for keeping it real. You've said what most of us were thinking and feeling about this episode. I agree with you about the writers, if you have a new writer then pair him/her with a vet to keep consistency in story lines. This episode was probably my least favorite of both seasons but hey BatB is still a great show!

Just a few things that rubbed me the wrong way. One you mentioned was Zach calling Cat a bitch. This was the second episode in a row where someone called her a bitch and that in my book is not okay, Jennifer & Sherri should put a stop to it now. Coming out of season 1 there were three things we could always count on, Vincent would never hurt Cat, Cat would always see Vincent as a person/human (not a Beast), and their love is Epic. Well Vincent has physically hurt Cat and Cat in this episode referred to Vincent as a beast twice (in the bedroom when she said "No Beasts allowed" and at the reunion when she said "I am in love with a Beast") so I was a little disappointed in that. Finally the Vincent/Alex, as JT put it "kind of split", in S1 the reason we bought in to the whole Alex story arc was Vincent was doing the right thing, going back to his first love, who he was engaged to with a wedding being planned, and trying to in a way put closure on the part of his life and realize just how much he loved Catherine. Well this episode blew that out of the water and to be honest it really wasn't necessary, there are so many other things that Zach could have resented Vincent for and wanted to seek revenge, we really didn't need to go there, a place the Beasties had put closure on.

OK, sorry for the long rant it is so much easier when Beauty and the Beast episodes are great and as awesome as "Hothead" was. Thank you Roger Grant for always writing my favorite episodes of BatB. And now we wait for next weeks episode.

  14. Great recap, I personally liked the episode, may not be as great as Hothead but it was still good. We need to have an idea of what VinCat were like in the past so it was great we got to learn a little of their backgrounds. It was also great seeing Vincent & JT having some guy time and Cat with her friends. Its interesting to see what they are like when they are with other people. Loved the VinCat moments. .shame it wasn't long. What I didn't like was the Gabe part, we can't go down this road again. ..not after Evan and Alex. I just don't trust Gabe period.
All in all Im loving S2, every episode has been an amazing ride and leaves you wanting more. I love the show deeply & there will always be somethings we may not like but what matters is that remember why we fell in love with it in the first place, VinCat epic love and the loveable JT & Tess. Best cast ever♥♥♥♥♥ #BatB

  15. Pretty much agree with you but I don't have a problem with V remembering some fling just by a touch and here's why. Clearly this girl did not mean that much to him and was just sex. In Cat's case, he has already had flashes of her, whilst he was saving her, which was a pretty intense moment. I think for his VinCat memories to come back, it will need to be an intense moment. I truly feel that his Cat memories and the JT memories are buried deeper than the one with the fling cause those important people are key to his humanity.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think the whole fling and last season's doing the right thing ties in with each other actually. V was clearly having a rough time when he enlisted, he and Alex split and he had the fling. Perhaps they reconnected in letters and when the Alex arc came into play, he felt he owed her after what he did to her, hence doing the right thing and running off with Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I understand what you're saying, but I really would have thought that he would have remembered something of their lovemaking, even if only just a small flash, when he had sex with Cat, if he could manage to remember Gabrielle by just looking at someone who resembled her.

  18. Ah, now I see why this episode has been disconnected at so many places. The hour came and went and at the end I was like what the hell just happened on my laptop screen? :|
Needless to say, am extremely disappointed with this week's episode and coming from me who loves this show to death, I think you were too generous with your grade. I know I sound harsh but then that's what the episode did to me. It was disconnected and disjointed at so many places.
The writers need to do away with beast-of-the-week. Hasn't been working well at all for me specially since Liar Liar. And this week's was the worst. Nothing made any sense whatsoever. How Vincent knew Zach, whether he knew him before he went to Afghanistan, if he met him there how does JT know Zach, etc, etc. Don't even get me started on Vincent's fling with Gabriella. We were always given the impression that Vincent was in a forever committed relationship with Alex, even engaged to her. So how did this one come into the picture? When and why did V and Alex break up? I thought Cat was the one who jumped from one bad boy to another without looking for any commitment but looks like V was the same. Basically, V was totally out of character than what we knew him to be in S1 courtesy this.
You know I'm actually finding Gabe really cute and nice this season. I know it isn't easy for a lot of beasties to forgive him for trying to kill VinCat but it was a survival instinct and I know that he would've have opted for an alternate if he had a choice. So I don't harbour as much harshness for him. But if at all the writers want a triangle for VinCat, Gabe isn't a convincing enough third angle, sorry to say. They need to find someone else and stop making Gabe so lame. Sendhil is an excellent actor and deserves more.
In fact I think every actor except Jay Ryan has been heavily underutilised so far this season. Kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth but I guess the first half of this season is more Vincent-centric.

P.S. This wasn't my favourite scene but I was pretty amused with Gabe and Vincent playing tug of war with a very very pissed Cat in the middle :P

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well it wasn't just looking. She touched him. I agree though but I'm holding out for that reveal to be significant than just a touch. Look how he freaked out when he remembered his bros in the previous ep, and those were some intense reactions.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's true, hopefully they will make the VinCat & JT memories equally intense, or least close to that. I think that would definitely make up for this current situation! After your first reply, it did start me thinking that maybe when they wiped his memories, they did actually focus heavily on pushing out those more significant relationships, rather than every little thing, so that would explain things quite well for me. Thanks for your thoughts, I actually feel a lot better now :)

  21. You're very insightful! I hadn't thought of that!

  22. Yes I liked the tug of war too :)

  23. I really liked the fight scenes (ok, maybe I just like Jay acting all tough...lol) and of course the VinCat moments, even tho she shoed him off both times, they did have a sweetness to them. I thought they showed a hint of Vincent's more tender side. Overall I liked the ep, just not some parts. I have a hard time buying Vincent broke up with Alex after all the ground work they laid last season about how they spent their whole lives planning their future and how awful he felt, leaving her, letting her believe he was dead. Now we find out he dumped her, had a few week fling with someone, then got back together with her and everything was honky dory? No, too out of character for me. But, if I'm trying to rationalize it, I suppose V could have felt as bad as he did about Alex BECAUSE of what happened with Gabriella. I just always assumed he felt bad because of the whole dead, but not really thing. Moving on, I hope they don't pursue love triangles. Who would really invest in any other relationship other than VinCat's? Not a smart writing plot IMO. I say keep the focus on what's working Vincent and Catherine coming together and being together. I like Gabe but please!, give me more JT!!!!

I agree about starting and ending with VinCat scenes, but maybe they had to end it that way. If she had found out before V left then she would have shown him the pic and talked about it with him. My theory is V will recognize him, so the writers had to have Cat discover his identity while V wasn't there so that when V and Bob come face to face there can be shocking moment. Maybe the "oh sh!t" moment we have heard about. JMO

  24. SPOT ON! Really really liked your review. It was not a good episode, characters were not genuine and it just did not flow. Not even crazy about the VinCat scene at the high school, just not as good as last weeks. Roger was around S1 he gets the show & the characters. He co-wrote Heart of Darkness with the best scene, them in the subway. Also, what was up with Cat's outfit? Dressing like you are going to a business conference instead of your reunion? not good, not good. WHERE IS JT! The show is lacking alot without him. Tess had the best lines in the whole episode, all funny & sharp but not liking the Gabe crushing on Cat. That is just stupid. He can have fond feelings because she saved him but that's it. Not nice of Tess to let it be, she needs to tell him to back off. Not making sense, lets all do all this work to help Cat be with Vincent but yeah, go ahead and nurse that crush of yours Gabe?!? A lot of beasties up in arms still over this. Trying to hope & pray that it is just a hiccup (like the Alex arcs a rough spot) that will lead us to a beautiful place soon. Trying to really really really trust the writers. Were you a beastie last season Lilth? Lots of frustration with the lack of press from CW & so little interaction like last season from writers & PA's. Missing our Sarah & Emily big time. Thank you for being honest & writing these for us, off to listen to the potcast now. By the way you are 1000x better than the hosts last year! Thank you!

  25. I completely agree about the flashback. Why was it so easy to remember Gabriella and Zach but very little memories about JT and Cat? The people who are supposed to matter the most? Is there a reason? When they wiped his memory did they focus more on the memories about the people who are most important? Knowing that if he ever remembered those people they would lose him as a soldier? So many question running thru my mind! lol I will admit tho, I too thought the flashback was HOT. But I think it has less to do about who he was making out with and more to do about HIM. ;) lol

  26. I was thinking the same thing about the memories!! great minds! ;) lol

  27. It’s not that I have a problem with him having proir relationships, that would be unrealistic. And I don’t think he cheated or anything, I just found the whole thing out of character for him. That’s my only issue. But by no means will I stop watching, I hope others don’t either. All shows have plot holes and some questionable moments but I love the show and Vincent, flaws and all!! :)

  28. I do miss Emily Silver a lot :(

  29. Completely agree with you DaniK - seeing Vincent/Jay being sexy with anyone is HOT, and I want more, much more! ;-) lol

  30. Well, in defense of Ms. Ashton (y'all know I love that woman right?), KK had to wear a harness for when Zack flung her across the room. Safety first, we actually bring that up on the podcast this week, LOL! I was a beastie last season but didn't start writing about the show until the end. I love Nina so my love for her makes me a bit reluctant to go all in on Tess and maybe I'm just overly hopeful that every time her character has these hiccups, that it's just a new writer (which has been the case both times I've had issues with the character). Thank you so much as always.

  31. I guess but ever since season 2 premiere they have been shoving Cat and Gabe together. Why couldn't it have been Tess to share this discovery with her, if had to be anyone but Vincent? As I said, I was just super disappointed with the outcomes after Hothead. I was all for Cat taking some time and giving Vincent space but now I just want team Beastie to be together (if only so we can get JT back to being an integral part of the show again).

  32. Rant as long as you like. I know that all of the beasties that read my reviews are loyal fans and aren't trying to jump ship. It's OK to be disappointed and express your fears and concerns. This is a safe place.

  33. We actually address the memory thing on the podcast this week, Lu has a family member that is a doctor and explained it to her and she relayed it. I found it quite interesting. Might even do a little meta piece on it next week. But it was more an emotional reaction (trust me, I had it too) but it's steeped in fact.

  34. Right now everything is made to appeal to a male audience that this show will never get while they should have tried to appeal to more female viewers. True is they are pushing away also the female audience they got through S1. Low ratings are not so unexpected because Beauty and the Beast is not an action movie . It's a romance about faithfullness, dedication , true love , friendship, respect between two sensitive , positive, empathic characters. One of the best moral and human lesson. And we got it in S1, despite huge and weak plotholes. But S2 is all about crazyness, psycho beasties , flat triangles and cold killers . The romance is badly missing , Vincent's noble personality and strong moral principles have been turned upside-down in a bad way. Most of the characters don't have any depth and right now not even a real purpose ( JT & Tess ) Maybe too much to digest for Batb traditional audience who had different expectations for S2 . Last stupid rant on Reunion episode: nothing really special to remember but my romantic (!) memories about AMP have been totally tarnished by Gabrielle flashback . Hot moments but left me with a bad taste in my mouth and the gut feeling that they sucked any magic out of Vincat intimate scenes. I know this show is not a fairy tail but com'on.. I don't know why the writers are doing their best to kill any good memory related to S1 . And AMP was one of them. End of rant.

  35. "He's not all dead, he's only mostly dead", I agree that Gabe's beast is not dead and will reappear. Thanks for pointing out that this was the writers and directors first, that helps a little. With 21-22 eps to fill you know they all can't be great.

  36. I've read a couple of your comments and I have to say you think exactly like I do! I absolutely agree that in a bit for more action, they're moving away from the essence of Beauty and the Beast which is the saddest thing, IMO. Also, they 'crazy pace' of the season Kristin mentioned time and again is evident. The pace is so crazy that it's leaving the viewers confused and wanting for more. The episodes are lacking big time. The writers need to take it easy with the rushing and information overload..

  37. They're probably trying anything they think might give them better ratings, hoping that something will eventually work.

  38. I agree, it should have been Tess there at the end. I like Gabe but am not interested in seeing him as part of a l/t. Now, him and Tess I can get behind. They have great chemistry, I hope the writers recognize that and that the BATB fandom are not really open to other love interests. Maybe we are seeing so much of him cause he's gonna bite the bullet? Writers tend to get the audience invested in sub characters right before they .... how did you say it...give them a dirt nap? lol (I'm gonna have to remember that one! lol)

  39. Agree . Reunion was a missed opportunity to slow down the crazy heavy stuff for one night and give the audience a light-hearted break . And right now I feel that some guest-stars characters (Aaron and Zach) - should have been explored with a deeper approach . Their storyline and personal connection with Vincent deserved more than one single rushed episode .

  40. thanks Lilith I always enjoy reading your reviews and I have always agreed with you. I also think something was off this episode. it was my least favourite episode of the season though not the least favourite episode of all. I am hoping things will go uphill from now on because Ican see the fans are getting frustrated which is not good given the ridiculously low ratings and the fact that it is PCA voting time now and everybody needs to keep voting.

  41. no we are all fans but we should not feel bad for not loving an episode! so please stay honest in your reviews

  42. Yep, that's what we speculate about on the podcast this week. I love Sendhil and the character of Gabe has so much potential and the layers are there, putting him in a love triangle seems like such a waste.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm sorry that you feel that way, I really do hope you decide to stick around in the fandom. While I enjoy that this show has ONE ship that has epic love written all over it, that's not my main focus. I love the bonds of friendship, the mystery as well as the action. I do agree the romance is off track quite a bit but this a drama first and foremost and our heroes have to struggle, unfortunately. I was very much on the fence about the sexy Gabriela flashback scenes, that seem like they were there just to titillate and not much else. It was a convenient plot device and nothing more. The writer was new, so I chalked it up to that. Beasties are emotional (myself included) but with a little research, I discovered the rush of memories make sense from a fact driven point of view, as much as that sucks. I hope you stick around at least until the winter hiatus because, I think you might miss something really great, if you do leave. I have no doubt that the relationship will be back on track before we leave for the winter break. It's OK to be disappointed. It's OK to be frustrated. But just stick around, OK? The cast and crew are so gracious to us fans that if nothing else, we should be loyal to them at the very least. Every show has a rough patch.

  44. Just keep in mind that the show is called Beauty and the Beast. If they're not together, then they don't have a show. As far as his flashbacks go, everyone has a past but it's a past that can't be changed. And if you really pay attention to Vincent, his actions and his facial expressions, you can tell how much he cares about Cat. But in regards to relationships there are always temptations and low points but if you're meant to be, you're meant to be. And they're meant to be, so just stick with it, it'll get better!

  45. I also think there's something more to Cat than what meets the eye. Sure she's one hell of a fighter but to ass-kick a beast without a tranq gun or anything? Definitely something going on. Besides...she had a little flash back about the blood on her shoe. Even if I was Cat, I wouldn't be able to remember a fight that happened so fast. So...I think that flashback might be hinting something???

I did love the episode for different reasons but have to agree that "Reunion" wasn't my favorite. It was good but not great. Hopefully next week will be a huge turn around :)

  46. Interesting theory about V not seeing the photo of Bob yet. It does make sense, but they still could have lingered on the VinCat moment for longer and had a more passionate kiss, before moving on to the Gabe scene.

  47. Great article....Gabe has turned into a creepy stalker...he needs to be killed off...for good this time..I am annoyed at Catherine also...Why would she trust him after all he has done to destroy Vincent...tried to kill him...got him captured and changed...and wanted to kill him again to see if he would come back. Wake up, Cat!!!!....
