Now this is more like it, I was looking forward to seeing Julian Jones’ contribution to Atlantis and he hasn't disappointed. He, alongside the marvellous direction from Alice Troughton, have put together the most rounded and visually pleasing episode yet. I feel like I know the three main character far more intimately, and understand their motivations and interactions far more clearly, after this one outing that I have in the previous seven. And, he can write a far better budding romance than we've seen to date in the show.
Emms finally has a script that he can sink his teeth into rather than being relegated to the side-line, my favourite scene of his being one where he meets with the Oracle for his first time; Stevenson certainly brings out the best in others performances I feel. But he has plenty of other chances to shine throughout the episode too, both with his regular companions and Arcas (played by Will Merrick from Skins & Doctor Who). His brother harbours a long held grievance that on the surface Pythagoras seems to have handled better than his sibling, but the fears that lie beneath his façade is what drives this story.
Another thing I enjoyed about this episode is that we finally venture out into the desert, which is far more like the terrain I expected to surround the city. I was a little disappointed in the Furies temple they come across while crossing the desert, but then what I would have wanted to see would have pushed the budget sky high for the sake of short time that the cast spend there, so I shouldn't really grumble that the caves are used in its place.
The Furies airs at 8pm on 16th November on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD, and then the show will take a weeks hiatus while the Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary on the 23rd. Dare I hope that the series will get better from this episode on? Judging by your review (which highlights wonderfully all the things I need to know) I think I'm looking forward to this one more than all the previous ones!

Oh dear! I've almost forgotten the bit about Jason coming from our world! LOL! Yeah, makes you wonder why they bothered to start the series with the modern day. The thing is, as you pointed out before, Jason doesn't have anyone to talk to openly about this, and the writers aren't being creative about this, like make Jason at least use modern-day references by accident (something about sending an email, texting, using a car...etc) much to Hercules and Pythagora's confusion and make the audience connect with him.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I've always said the same about Merlin, that it really needs an extra 15 minutes to tie things up nicely, but - well... 45 mins is the standard running time for a BBC Saturday night family drama.

ReplyDeleteI hope you also enjoy the episode more too, maybe it's just Jones' way with words that helps this one out, it is pretty much filler but of a much higher quality I feel.
I guess we're heading towards Jason's 'secret' when we finally get to Hades and Pandora's Box that we saw in the trailer for the whole season at the start of it. It kinda feels like filler until then in many ways, filler without magical monsters at that!! At least that card can be ticked this episode, we have a monster of the week to deal with at last lol.
