Arrow 2.05 "League of Assassins" Review: Truth, Forgiveness, and Acceptance

Nov 7, 2013

This week’s episode of Arrow, “League of Assassins,” was written by Jake Coburn and Drew Z Greenberg and directed by Wendey Stanzler and delivers on every level: drama, action, and even some great one liners. The episode also sets the stage for some continuing storylines.

The first thing I want to talk about in the episode is the amazing fight scenes in this episode. As I mentioned in my preview, James Bamford the fight choreographer/coordinator and stunt coordinator just keeps upping the ante on the fight sequences. His team delivers amazing fights each and every week and they just keep getting better. Each of the fights is unique in its own way. Each fight also takes place in one of the three principals homes – the first in Oliver’s (Stephen Amell), the second in Al-Owal’s (Navid Negahban), and the final in Sara’s (Caity Lotz). In the first fight with Al-Owal, the thing that I was most struck by was the use of “found” weapons as Sara (Caity Lotz) makes a staff out of a piece of molding. In the second fight, I was most impressed by the beautiful framing of the fight with the Canary fighting on the upper catwalk and Oliver and Al-Owal fighting below her. In the final fight, Sara and Oliver are joined by Quentin (Paul Blackthorne), and the three work together to achieve final victory, but at the price of Sara having to reveal all her secrets to her father. Quentin handles himself really well in the fight and I loved the Indiana Jones moment when he pulled his spare revolver and killed the assassin.

Secrets and who’s keeping them is a major theme in this episode. Oliver promises Sara that he won’t be the one to disclose her secret. Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) tells Sara that she will also keep her secret, and tells her to ask Oliver if she thinks she can’t. Laurel (Katie Cassidy) is also keeping secrets. Moira (Susanna Thompson) still has secrets she doesn’t want revealed, and even Oliver still has secrets about his time on the Island. Once it becomes clear that Quentin will have to keep Sara’s secret, he says “It’s already the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” and he asks Oliver “How do you do it?” And that’s the thing about keeping secrets – it gets harder and harder to keep them. Diggle reminded Oliver in the last episode that he’d said that secrets carry weight, that they are heavy to carry around, and Oliver reminded Diggle about how much he works out – to be able to carry that weight. It’s clear that it is getting harder and harder for Oliver to keep his secrets and he takes a huge step at the end of the episode by finally opening up to Diggle (David Ramsey).

In encouraging Sara to tell her family the truth or at least reveal she is alive, Oliver learns something about his mother. Sara doesn’t want to tell her family she’s alive because she doesn’t think they can possibly accept what she’s had to do to survive, and Moira faces a similar dilemma. Oliver arrives to the meeting with the DA Adam Donner (Dylan Bruce) only to find Laurel also at the table. As it turns out, Laurel is trying to help as best she can and it’s her intervention that has given Moira an alternative to the death penalty. Moira ultimately wants to take the deal in order to not lose her kids. Oliver ultimately realizes this and he and Thea (Willa Holland) urge her to fight. Holland and Thompson are terrific in the scene as Thea tells Moira that whatever she did, they won’t ever love her less.

The other major theme of the episode is about forgiveness. Oliver tells Sara, “That’s the thing about forgiveness. You can’t get it til you ask for it.” Sara is willing to remain isolated and a ghost to her family to avoid the ultimate rejection from them. In the end, she has to reveal herself to Quentin in order to keep him safe from the League of Assassins. There are two very powerful scenes between Sara and Quentin and Lotz and Blackthorne really shine in both. It is telling, however, that Sara doesn’t tell her father anything about where she’s been. However, she under estimates his abilities as a detective, and I loved watching him piece the entire puzzle together as he realizes that she knows Felicity, so she knows the Arrow, so she’s the girl in the mask who’s been kicking ass in the Glades, and therefore she’s already been home for weeks. He asks her point blank if it weren’t for the League of Assassins would she actually have ever revealed herself. To her credit, Sara unflinchingly tells the truth that she likely never would have. And again, Quentin surprises her by accepting that too.

The second scene between the two bookends the final fight of the episode. Sara tells Quentin that even as far away as she was, she never forgot her home or the sound of his voice. By killing Al-Owal, and sending a message through his henchman to Ra’s al Ghul, Sara finally reveals herself to her father. She apologizes for him having to see what she is and says she “can’t imagine what you think of me.” Again, Sara underestimates Quentin’s love for her and he says he thinks she’s a survivor and the bravest person he knows. He tells her he loves her and would love for her to come home. She can’t of course, and in order to keep her family safe, she must leave town. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it looks like we are going to continue to get her story in the flashbacks.

In fact, the flashbacks in this episode are really telling Sara’s story. We begin with her rescue – onto the prison ship with the Captain (Jimmy Jean-Louis). We also get the introduction of another of DC’s super villains, mad scientist Dr Anthony Ivo (Dylan Neal). Ivo’s major phobia in the comics is death, so presumably whatever experiment he tells Sara he wants her to be a part of has to do with cheating death somehow. By the time Oliver is dropped at her feet on the prison ship, it is clear that Sara has already undergone some kind of re-conditioning and is about to do the same to Oliver. Perhaps she was forced to become a torturer to avoid being tortured herself? Ivo’s mad strength training through self-bullet extraction must factor into this somehow. I thought it was very interesting to parallel Sara and Oliver’s experiences. As the episode opens, Sara is dreaming of the Island and we know that Oliver is still plagued by nightmares. It may account for the fact that he is up watching tv when she emerges from having her nightmare.

Oliver’s acceptance of her is really one of Sara’s first steps to accepting herself. It was a great moment of trust for him to introduce her to both Diggle and Felicity. Both are accepting of her and tell her they are happy she’s alive. I loved the interaction between Felicity and Sara too. It is a testament to how much both characters have grown that Felicity does realize that Sara merely did what she had to to survive and Sara is able to reach out to Felicity. Felicity is somewhat in awe of Sara – at least her pain threshold!

The other side to forgiveness is acceptance. Laurel finally begins to show signs that she is accepting that she may be struggling. She’s still hiding that she’s using drugs as a crutch, however, and obviously doesn’t drink at dinner in order to prove to Oliver that she doesn’t have a drinking problem. The final scene with Blackthorne is another terrific one. Quentin tells her that a parent never stops worrying about his kids and that also resonates with Moira.

Perhaps the biggest thing to come out of the episode for Oliver’s development is the acknowledgement that his past won’t stay buried and that he’s tired of trying so hard to keep it buried. He has friends and family that love and support him. Of course, this should make it easier for him to join other groups... like the Justice League!

I thought this was another great episode. We get a new villain in the past flashbacks who is going to make that storyline really heat up. We also learned that Sara knew Shado (Celina Jade) because she remarks on seeing Oliver’s hood that she’d first seen it on Shado – so Shado is alive too! What did you think of the episode? Were these the best fight scenes yet? Was one your favorite? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Arrow is cornering the market on Canadian guest stars named Dylan!
I'm calling it now, another Canadian Dylan will appear before season's end!
Maybe Dylan Trowbridge from Hemlock Grove?
Dylan Taylor from Covert Affairs and Copper?
One of the Degrassi Dylans, Everett or Schimd?
I vote for Dylan Baker.. wait... dammit he is American!

Okay.. insomniac theatre ramblings have ended..

    Great review!
Truly an incredible episode that pushed a number of characters forward in their individual paths of self-acceptance.

I think Sarah grabbed a curtain rod maybe in the first fight scene? Have to watch again and check.

The odd thing to me about both Sarah and Oliver being insecure in their past actions is that the majority of people would understand they did it to survive. Of course, Oliver cannot broadcast his past since it is so much a part of his present as Arrow. I am glad he is now able to discuss at least some his past with Digg!

As I watched the Moira scenes this week I did have one thought...
With all of her knowledge of Malcolm Merlyn's dealings would some of his connections want her dead? Some of the "things that must never get out" she has touched on could be dangerous to others and not just embarrassing or incriminating to her and her family. I would think it would be easy to kill her in prison. Although Malcolm did seem to be working to achieve more personal goals though so maybe the LoA is not worried about what Moira knows....

  2. Great review!
Regarding Shado, though: All we know for sure is that she was still alive when Oliver was captured on that ship and that she stayed alive at least long enough to meet Sara, afterward.

  3. I'm ready to bet that the dragon tattoo on her shoulder has something to do with the league.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Could be. Perhaps Shado was the one to help Sara finally break free of the league. That would be an interesting twist, wouldn't it?

  5. Thanks!

I've watched it several times - pretty sure it's molding over a door that she grabs - archway really.

I think both Sara and Oliver are plagued by conscience - it's what propels them to be heroes. They don't hold themselves to a regular standard.
I love your thoughts about Moira. It doesn't have to be LoA - anyone else involved in the Glades project will want to keep their part quiet, making Moira a target. Prison is likely the least safe place for her to be. Wonder if we'll see Moira suddenly pull out some mad fighting skills?!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yes. I definitely don't think that we will ever see Shado in the present. Bummer. Although that would be another nice twist for Oliver's lovelife if she showed up at some point, wouldn't it?!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Very likely! Great point!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh yes! Me likey! Unless they see each other as rivals for Oliver. I suspect though that you are right and Shado is dead in the present....

  9. Another great review of a solid episode.
My one quibble is with the old "to protect my family I must leave town" line. If the LoA knows who sara is and knows where her family is, she doesn't have to be in town for the LoA to go after her family in order to get payback on her or to try to coerce her to return. I mean, supposedly she returned to the city in the first place to ensure they were okay; now she's LEAVING the city after the LoA has explicitly targeted them? Even if they did target them initially because she was there, now that they HAVE, there's no reason for them not to do so again. . . .

    ReplyDelete
  10. Who says that they are still in contact? I for my part hope that both Shado and Slade are still alive.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, but targeting them doesn't make much sense if Sara doesn't know it, and can't be lured out by it because she isn't nearby. They are trying to be low key after all, randomly killing people would be bad for business.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Loved it and I'm seriously surprised that I did. The league is amazingly fun and the fight scenes get better episode to episode...all we now need is Malcom to resurface

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is that really a chance you'd want to take?
Besides, this is a world in which a gangster dubs himself "Mayor" and rides around in public in an open vehicle (and also executes his OWN guys--talk about bad for business!), accompanied by machine gun toting henchmen, costumed villains openly attack drug delivery vans, an alderman adopts a masked super-villain identity . . . and a good chunk of the city just got dropped by an artificially-generated earthquake. And so on. A couple of random murders would barely get noticed--even of an ADA and disgraced former detective.
Besides, it's not as if the LoA has to kill them to get her attention. Pretty clearly, she's concerned for her family's welfare--hence the return to the city after the earthquake to protect them (though acting as a costumed vigilante while there ostensibly to ensure your family is safe does not seem like a wise strategy to avoid detection by the LoA. . .)--so it's not an unreasonable inference that she'd continue to try to keep tabs on her family. So, her being out of town does not really materially reduce their usefulness as pawns to use against her. Kidnap one or both of them.
Of course, if wherever she goes, she's gonna run around vigilanteing in a very recognizeable leather outfit, it's not as if finding out where she goes next will pose much of a challenge for them. I mean, really, you don't want an international group of highly-trained assassins to find you? DON'T RUN AROUND DISPLAYING YOUR TRAINING!

  14. Thanks for the great review.

You have a talent for identifying the main themes of an episodes and give examples to back up your reflexion.

  15. I just can't possibly ever gush enough about the fight scenes in this show! Honestly, the second one, I literally sat up onto the edge of my seat and said - "wow - this is beautifully shot!" Just loved the fight on two levels...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Perhaps she will be making life difficult for the LoA elsewhere in the world and they'll be too busy to come back for Laurel and Quentin - OR maybe Laurel will have to stop feeling sorry for herself and learn how to defend herself! Quentin pretty much held his own. If she disappears out of their lives, they can still be used as pawns, but they can't be used to find Sara - so they are less valuable from that standpoint....

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's truly amazing that a show manages to deliver better fight scenes than some action flicks.
Arrow's simply doing a better job at that since there're less heavy cuts and more of actual choreography, just love 'em.
But still nothing beats the Arrow vs. Merlyn fight in the season finale last year

    ReplyDelete
  18. Completely agree! If you read my reviews of other shows, you will see that cut up fights which mean you see _nothing_ are one of the things I hate most. I want to be able to see the whole thing! And Arrow delivers. Great choreography and great direction. I really attribute this in part to the consistency in directors - and Bamford of course. But the team works together all the time and there's a heightened level of trust that goes with that I think.

  19. There's a difference between Slade and Shado. Sara asked last week "What happened to Slade?", so she doesn't know his status. However, she didn't ask this about Shado and as she said her name, she seemed to get a little quieter, sound a little more upset. I reckon Shado dies at some point. She's obviously alive at this point of the flashbacks though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That would definitely be my conclusion. I also suspect - though I don't want this to happen - that Slade goes darkside...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, but I don't know what would push him to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Also in this episode Oliver mentioned the Dragon label vodka was given to him by an old friend or something.. I don't recall exactly. The prisoner in the cell next to Oliver was Russian and Russinans love their vodka on TV! XD

Could be a connection to the dragon tattoo/ League.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So I already wrote this in another comment, but am I the only who think they revealed that Malcolm is still alive (and probably sheltered by the LOA) because the assasin says to Oliver " you barely defeated" him which doesn't mean killed or finished... And anyway how would he know that it was Oliver who fought Malcolm unless Merlyn told him himelf?

    ReplyDelete
  24. When he drank it the dragon on it looked really similar to his and Shado's shoulder tattoo.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The last time we saw Slade he was near ground Zero of a Mortar round. If it fragmented anywhere near his face then we may only see him with the Deathstroke mask on to hide it.. or so he can cope on what it may look like. There is also the possibility that Slade was taken aboard the boat as well but is stored elsewhere and being operated on by Ivo.

    So many possibilities

Also Im starting to wonder now if all of Olviers Combat training does indeed come via Yao Fei/ Shado/ Slade or if when he left the island he had training elsewhere.

  26. Quick Question: Did Sara keep getting called 'Prophet' or was I hearing something that wasnt there? I dont know much about the League of Assassins. Are they are quasi religous organisation?

Also the CGI Canary was... pretty bad!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I didn't hear anyone call Sara "Prophet." I don't know of any religious overtones to the LoA. And agreed. The canary was very bad...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think he was just saying it was a close fight that Oliver barely managed to win, so anyone better than Merlyn - like his teacher - should be able to easily defeat Oliver. Just because he barely won doesn't mean he didn't win and kill Merlyn... though it is still possible Merlyn is alive...

    ReplyDelete
  29. If Ivo saves Slade, that is pretty good motivation for Slade to help him...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think I know what you are talking about, at the end of the episode just before Sarah kills Al-Owl he says "Just because you're the prophet you will be granted your freedom?"

I thought it was prophet or prof's pet, but on second lsiten I think it is prophet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah it could be.

IT is a twisted rod spanning the doorway that I assumed once had draperies like some Victorian or old houses did to cut down on drafts between rooms.

    *shrug*

Either way, some odd molding or an unused curtain rod, still bad ass to grab it and use it as a staff! XD

  32. Last night this episode of Arrow was shown in our country with subtitles. According to it Al-Owal says "You think just because you're the beloved you will be granted your freedom?" I was surprised hearing that. Maybe Sara was the mistress of Ra's Al Ghul's child. Hence her hatred of woman suffering at the hands of men.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah I guess it could be interprated that way too :) But could he possibly know that? It would mean there was a witness during the Oliver/Merlyn fight!
I personally believe that Merlyn is alive, he's being "cared" by the LOA and that they kinda revealed it!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Interesting...Thanks for sharing that!

As good a theory as any right now.
I Imagine a lone woman on a prison ship full of violent men could have MANY reasons for anger towards men harming women, I can see why she would take women suffering at the hands of men as a cause!.

It was a fantastic episode. So is Shado really alive?, why that does not surprise she's invincible!.
I hope Oliver finally opens up to Diggle and really start taking things off his chest. Sara is full of action-packed surprises. Her revealing her identity to Detective Lance was a bold but powerful choice, I knew Lance could keep this all under wraps. I hope she him again and of course all her family knows...which won't be a while.
I had this wave of concern because I had thought Quentin would figure out Oliver's identity because everything connects..
Laurel! I hope she recovers pretty dang soon because she's gonna end up in hospital. There so much to her, besides drinking herself silly and popping 'lollies'. I sometimes wonder about the character development but I haveto wait and see. I assume either Quentin or Oliver would get through to her or to be far-fetched Black Canary will.
I just wish Moira would say what the secret is, then that would leave to Oliver's secret and so forth. Everything could completely crumble or it would be a whole new perspective of joy. Even though it is ultimately about Oliver she could've been part of something else, something more dangerous.
So like I said it was a really fantastic episode and excited for more :)
