Since this was my second favorite episode of Arrow, I almost gave up on narrowing it down to 12 choices. There were so many good scenes. In teh end though the double punch of action followed by earned emotion in the clock tower won it for me. Excellent episode.
It was one moment in the scene labelled "Sara and Quentin talk in the clock tower, fight assassins, show unconditional love, and say goodbye." There was so much going on in that scene that I could not put everything in the label but it was in that scene.
This is cruel, it's getting harder and harder to pick only one best scene for this show. But my pick goes to the clock tower scene, not only because of that awesome fight sequence, but also the Lance's goodbye was very emotional (just like when they reunite). But I guess Sara had to go from the present timeline, so the story goes back to focus on Oliver and the rest, but I'm sure she'll be back, if not in the mid season finale, before the season ends.
I read a comment somewhere on this site that said Sara died in this episode, I'm very happy that wasn't the case. I really liked her interactions, not only with Oliver and Quentin, but with Felicity and Diggle as well. My other favorite scene? Oliver and Diggle drinking vodka (who gave that to him?), and Oliver finally starting to open up and talk about the five years, and I think Diggle is the right person to do that with.
That would be my second choice. So many fantastic Sara and Quentin scenes this time. I am sorry to see her go so soon, even if it ends up only being a short hiatus.
"Sara and Quentin talk in the clock tower, fight assassins, show unconditional love, and say goodbye"... I voted for that scene just because of the way that sentence was put together hahaha!
We will probably see her in flashbacks on the ship (which ok, isn't exactly the same thing as Sara being in with the gang, but its better than nothing).
I had an issue with the catching the arrow behind your head scene. At least for me , that verges on the realms of next to impossibility. My fave scene was the meetup on the street between Officer Lance and wayward daughter. That scene resonated as a lull in the violence that was stacked around it.
It's easy, the clock tower scene was Arrow as its best. And in a way Sara killing the assassin and then standing ashamed in front of her father was even more emotional than the actual reunion.
Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance) keeps knocking it out of the park this season with some really emotional performances that really lift the story from the usual action capering to some great drama; great ass-kicking drama. Really glad the writers are giving him the story-lines/scenes but I wish they would also include him in the promo material (i.e. posters etc); his character deserves to be fully recognised. He may not be one of the pretty young hotties or the abs brigade (not that I'm complaining about those...oh no! :-P) but he's definitely one of my favourite things about this show.
Hard to choose, there were some great moments for Quentin and Sara and it was great to see Ollie start to open up about what the 5 years was really like.
I couldn't choose between the amazing fight scenes and the amazing emotional scenes. so I chose the clock tower scene because it had both. :)
Seriously though, the previous two fights were also among the best, if not THE best, Arrow has delivered. Amazing action choreography all through this episode. And the Sara/Quentin scenes, the reveal and especially the talk at the restaurant, were downright beautiful. As much as I'm digging Caity Lotz, Paul Blackthorne was this week's MVP.
I've come to the conclusion that making Laurel Canary isn't the way to fix her character. At this point, I think if they do that, fans will resent her even more because they feel Sara is the "rightful" Canary. And let's face it, it would take extraordinary writing, an extraordinary stuntwoman, and an extraordinary improvement in Cassidy's acting for a BC Laurel to measure up to BC Sara.
Right now, I think the best way to go about things is to keep Sara as a recurring character (don't have her in every single episode, because I think overuse would quell the coolness of her character) and develop a different, but RELEVANT path for Laurel. In my opinion, after Laurel learns Ollie's secret, she could help Team Arrow through her job at the DA's office - kind of like Inspector Gordon helping Batman. She could be the one to pull legal strings or find useful information. I think that might work better than making her a masked vigilante. I assume Sara's introduction was supposed to set in motion a chain of events that would lead to her sister taking on the BC moniker, but it seems Sara herself is such a good BC that it would be a huge mistake to replace her with Laurel.
For a show whose producers stated 1000000 times how "dark, gritty and realistic" it is, Arrow sure has TONS of characters with the rather superhuman ability to catch arrows, often from a short distance. Al-Owal (sp?) is at least the fourth person to have done that so far.
This episode was awesome, if i had to choose, i'd choose Sara shows herself to Quentin and they reunite! i couldn't believe that was happening but i couldn't be happier and at the same time it was heartbreaking! kudos to both actors and wow, let's keep this show like this! :D
I'm not ready to give up Laurel yet. I think these writers have shown that they are capable of writing very good female roles. I believe they can repair Laurel's character and make her the Black Canary without too much resentment from people willing to give Laurel a try. To leave her only in attorney mode would do the comic book part of the fandom a huge disservice. I do think that Sara's BC wll be very hard to top though.
That is why I picked it as well. There is something of that 1-2 punch where the adrenaline is flowing high from the exquisite fight scene to the absloute sucker punch of the drama seconds later that really worked for me. If I had to choose 2-3 scenes though the poll would have been impossible.
People were merely speculating that Sara would die based on my somewhat confusing and purposely vague preview for the episode. It wasn't anything official. I am also glad that Sara did not die, although I will miss her until she comes back.
That was my absolute least favorite moment. It stretches believability too much as it is. Now it's jsut plain boring as well. It's one of the show's biggest cliches.
I agree 100%. I think that prodigal son idea worked so well in this episode. To watch his unconditional love and forgiveness surround her, taking away some of her guilt was amazing. It also helped that Paul Blackthorne and Caity Lotz knocked it out of the park.
I love how they have more fully incorporated him into the story this year. He was wasted much of last season. Every scene he is in this season raises the emotional bar another level. Here's hoping he will continue to get great scenes to sink his teeth into. I also would like to see him on the promos.
I adore the Diggle and Oliver scene, mostly because I have really missed it. Not that I don't like the additions to the cast in the last year or so, but it has made moments with jsut Diggle and Oliver few and far between. I also liked their bond and to see Oliver start to share his most painful experiences with Digg makes me hopefull that more scenes like that are to come.
Good reasoning - I did too. The action was top notch in this episode. I don't think I've seen better choreographed scenes in any TV show. Bamford always addds something in to make the scenes feel fresh. I particularly loved Sara breaking off part of the door to use it as a weapon in the first fight scene. There were so many great scenes to choose from. I am however waffling about who the MVP of the episode is going to be. At first I thought Quentin like you. Then in the podcast I went with Sara. Now it's a toss-up. I might cheat and give it to both because their scenes definitely raised the bar on all other ones.
I was shocked that they moved so quickly with her character. I know Arrow moves at thrice the speed of other shows but that was still a quick turnaround - one major reveal per episode practically. I am loving this season and cannot wait to see what they give us next.
That was Stephen's best acting this episode to me too. I recently watched the pilot again and it never ceases to amaze me jsut how much he has grown as an actor in such a short time span.
Is Bamford a new choreographer on the show? Because among other things, it seems the action has also gotten stronger this season. Not that Season 1 didn't have some good fights, but the ones in this episode were Nikita/Alias quality. (And if you know me you know I can hardly give a bigger compliment than that, lol.)
I must say that this episode was stellar. I also really was please with the nice nolan batman/ras al ghul nod when sarah mentioned to be mindful of your surroundings
I picked Sara and Quentin the clock tower. Particularly the moment where Sara admits to her father that she's a killer and embraces her. Also loved the scene in the diner but it wasn't when he guessed that Sara was the masked woman...it that moment when the napkin dispenser drops and Sara reacts. Quentin gives her this look of evaluation. He's realizing that his daughter has been through a LOT.
I wonder if, next week, he has a conversation with Oliver about the declaration that Sara was dead.
Katie Cassidy doesnt have what it takes to fill Caity Lotz shoes, very big shoes. Its an impossible feat and Im confidently sure about that. They messed up with this casting of KC, she has such a limited range thats better suited in soap operas and playing bitchy/bratty characters. Her chemistry with other characters is non existent, uncoordinated in her action scenes, unexpressive and bland in her acting. She isn't as endearing or sympathetic which makes more suited at playing villainous characters not a heroic character.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteWhere is the Arrow's entrance on Clock Tower??? Was the best Scene Poll in the episode!!!
ReplyDeleteSara and quentin reunite

ReplyDeleteSadly, the only parts I did not like in the episode where the Sara flashbacks.

Thanks. It's sometimes hard to cram everything that happens in a scene into a short enough sentence to fit in the poll.

ReplyDeleteIt was such a touching scene. Again well acted and an emotional punch that was earned. I hope we get scenes between the two of them again soon.

ReplyDeleteHe is not new and this year he even runs TTP's stunts in addition to Arrow's.
ReplyDeleteI thought he was good at playing the guy with the PTSD that can't feel anything then too.
ReplyDeleteMe too and I'm looking forward to Sara revealing she's alive to the rest of her family too.
