Last night Coven’s episode, titled “The Axeman Cometh”, was all about bringing characters back from the dead : one new serial killer, named Axeman, and two witches are back in the game !
Welcome back Madison and Myrtle (well, Myrtle is soon to be resurrected). Delphine LaLaurie must have been busy doing chores because she did not get any screen time at all, FrankenKyle also made his comeback, still no talking, Fiona and Marie were calmer in this episode so the young bitches could have a bigger part ! Yay Zoe, Queenie and Nan !
So, as the episode’s title let us think, the Axeman came to play in our beloved coven. He was quite frightening. He made me think of the Zodiac killer : very calm, writing letters to the press, announcing on which day he will kill again etc. It was a nice setup for his character. After the Minotaur (he is dead, Marie confirmed it), he is the new creepy serial killer for this season. We know every season we get a great serial killer in AHS (Rubber Man in season 1 and Bloody Face in season 2), this addition feels right.
We first saw him kill a couple in the 20’s and then, after explicitly told people he would kill anyone who is not playing jazz on Thursday, the witches from the Academy decided it was time to put an end to him. They are strong women, they are fighting for their right to vote so they can fight against a man. They played classic music, so when Franck the Axeman came and threatened one witch, she stabbed him (love how the blood spattered from his heart) and then twenty witches stabbed him to death. Goodbye Axeman…. For now.
This episode was more focused on the new generation of witches, and it was time. I love Jessica Lange, and Fiona is one of the best character from AHS so far, but still, the story needs to go on and it was the right moment to spend some time with our young witches. Zoe is clearly a candidate for the New Supreme. She has a new power and tonight, she finally decided to look for Madison and what happened to her. Someone (Madison ? Axeman ? Supreme power ?) lead her to a secret room and she realized that the Coven used to be very large and now they are only three witches left. Time to form an alliance. Zoe, Queenie and Nan made and drank their pact, they are watching out for each other. Girls, you should have done that since day 1 !
Zoe also found a spirit board. They used it so they could reach Madison’s spirit and know what happened to her but surprise surprise : they contacted the Axeman. Since he died in the Academy, his spirit still haunts the place apparently. Queenie was the one to stop everything before it was too late, she knew how dangerous this thing can be (poor Grandma Queenie). She is really becoming my favorite young witch ! But I’m not sure if she is Supreme type or whether she could live till the season is over. Of course, Zoe being a stubborn witch promised the Axeman to release him so he led her to Madison’s body in the attic, aka Spading’s room… Unfortunately for him, she was stronger than him. Queenie and Nan finally came to Spading's interrogation, lazy witches. They tied him to a chair to make him talk (funny, for someone who has no tongue) while torturing him (Vodoo doll power is awesome !). Nan can read mind (nice power too), it was a great moment hearing Spading at last. Clearly, he is a sick man. He admitted killing Madison, but Zoe was clever and she didn't believe in his motivations.
Having found Madison’s body, Zoe had only one thing to do : go see Misty Day. She reunited with FrankenKyle !
Oh, yeah, FrankenKyle came back to Misty Day. For me, this storyline still feels useless. I don’t really see the point right now, what can they do with this creature ? Zoe doesn’t love him and after he got really mad when Misty Day bathed him (incest mommy issues) and he destroyed her home, Misty Day is no longer a fan of him. He destroyed her radio that meant no more Stevie Nicks for her… That was just too much for her to bear, luckily Zoe was there to bring him back (and keep him in the Coven). Zoe was there for a reason and she quickly convinced Misty Day to use her power and so, Madison is back ! Yay… or not. I was quite happy with her death, she is the spoiled girl from the group, we get it but is there more to her ? She is not the next Supreme, I don't see the point of bringing her back… We will see what happens. I’m guessing Fiona will be quite mad when Madison shows up.
Speaking of Fiona, she had not much to do this week. She killed her nemesis for 30 years last week, but that did not give her rest. She showed us a new power : telepathy ! Actually, not a great power when you are in chemotherapy. She keeps telling people everything she does is for her daughter, but I’m not really convinced. It’s really hard to understand that aspect of her character. She is not a good mother, she clearly does not like how Cordelia is, she barely raised her but still she used her as a pretext everytime. But, if she really wanted to have a stable relationship with her daughter, why keep lying to her ? Specially lying about who threw acid at her face. Cordelia can never trust her. What do you think of their relationship ?
Delia can not trust her husband either. Now she is blind, she can see how he really is : a cheating bastard. I told you, not a good idea to cheat on a witch. But, what Delia did not see is that her husband is working with Marie Laveau ! Yes, that Marie Laveau, witches’ number one enemy ! A cheater and a witch hunter, nice pick Delia. He has worked with Marie since 6 years to kill every Salem descendants and he already killed a lot (last week, he killed Alexandra Breckenridge’s Kelly, her power was cool). He used Cordelia’s researchs to kill witches. Bad bad husband. But now, Marie is tired of waiting, Fiona killed her lover so she wants him to bring the witches’ heads and to burn down the coven ! Nothing more… I have no idea how he can get out of this ? I’m pretty sure he won’t succeed, but who will kill him ? Fiona or Delia ?
As Cordelia’s day was not bad enough, she was ready to go to bed, at night, alone and blind, in her bedroom, the Axeman appeared. Thank you Zoe for bringing him back. Attacking a blind girl feels like cheating, but Delia was strong for once. I like new blind Delia, she has an awesome power and she is darker. I really hope she go deeper in that dark side. Sarah Paulson is just so great ! Of course, when Zoe and her friend heard Delia's screams, they came to the rescue. Zoe knew what she had to do. She played with fire and so, she did what she promised first : she released the Axeman. Now, a cold murderer is back in New Orleans’s street… But he did not get much farther. He went to a bar (after spending 90 years trapped in a coven, it’s understandable) and met up with charming Fiona. She was so delighted and proud that a guy came talking to her, you could see it in her eyes.
Spells notes :
• Fiona + Axeman : how do you see their storyline go ? I felt romance in those two seconds. Fiona deserves a break and some love, right ? But isn’t it a bit strange for the Axeman to come right to the Supreme ? Coincidence ?
• Girls power ! I like how Zoe, Queenie and Nan decided to get together and not trust Fiona. Finally girls, you are getting it right !
• So, as long as Misty Day is here, no witch is dead for good on this show.
• Will Fiona kill Madison again ? Or kill Misty Day ?
• Misty Day in the Coven ! I really wanted her to stay ! Why can’t you stay future Supreme Misty Day ?! (I’m just guessing here)
• Who really attacked Delia ? Her own mother ? !
• How long Myrtle will stay in the mud ? 1 episode or 2 ?
• “I need a cigarette” You just been resurrected, can you wait a day at least Miss Roberts ?
• Kelly’s power : fire ! Just like Madison. Did you think she will be back ?
• Evan Peters butt !!!
And you, what did you think of this episode ? Put your spell books down and hit the comments !
