Niki/Jessica was the story that got me committed to the show, although I too preferred Tracy when she came on the scene. For an actress playing like 5 characters though, Ali Larter was shamefully underused on the show!
Yeah I think I remember her being quite active in the first episodes and then vanishing and I think I read somewhere that was a movie involved. She only had a very minor scene in the finale rescuing HR which was a shame
Nathan, Claire and Sylar. But then, mostly everyone and everything worked in S1. What happened to the show afterwards could be the subject of many a thesis.
OMG, how could I forget Bennett! He was definitely the best character! Especially in the first season, where his and Claire's storyline was so powerful and moving. It's amazing how he started out looking completely villainous and evolved into a character we all rooted for.
I also liked Tracy better than Niki (although Jessica was fun :D) and I felt she was similarly under-utilized. Her relationship with Nathan, which worked so well in my opinion, quickly imploded for the sake of a contrived twist (Tracy siding with Arthur - the guy who gave her the ability she was so mortified about!). During the "Fugitives" arc, she was mostly underused until the fantastic Cold Snap - and then they killed her. When she came back in the last season, she had no purpose and would disappear for many weeks at a time. It's a shame, she had such a cool (pun somewhat intended) power, she was a smart and conniving character and her moral ambiguity was interesting.
There were early reports about S4 saying that the storyline would involve Bennett starting a new Company with the help of Angela and Tracy. I'm not sure if it was a mere rumor or a plot they dropped because of Ali Larter's schedule, but it could have been SO great.
Agree with it all! Cold Snap remains one of my favorite episodes of the series, it was SO great! And I loved her relationship with Nathan too, I don't know why they never explored that. But to fair, the fugitives arc, although my favorite after season 1 by far, was a crime committed against the character of Nathan!
Hiro was great in his childish fascination of everything superhero-y. Sylar was a total bad ass villain in that first season. And I liked Nathan Petrelli for a reason that is escaping me right now, maybe the flying power?
ahhh season 1, the only good season of the show for me... that said, the fave characters for me were: Peter, Hiro, and then Sylar as he was a great big bad for the season and should've met his end here... everything went downhill after that for me.....
Cold Snap was really fantastic, and the last truly great episode of the series in my opinion. Things had built up after falling down in early season 3, and the Fugitives arc was going pretty well and peaked with Cold Snap, after which it seemed to go downhill until the show ended.
I think Season 5 had some decent stuff, but not on the same level as Heroes at its best. But it could have been bad. I thought season 2 and the villains arc in season 3 were really problematic. Fugitives I really loved it.
Peter, Hiro, and Mohinder. Hiro was absolutely infectious and it was really hard to be in a bad mood while he was on screen. I liked Mohinder quite a lot (in season 1), in addition to his opening philosophical ruminations. Peter was a great character, and a bit unusual as a male lead: compassionate, kind, helpful. It was neat that his empathy was what set him as an equal to Sylar. Most of the characters were great. I'd probably give an honorable mention to Zach. Not sure why, but I liked him.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
All of them if i can :)

ReplyDeleteI agree with Tracy and Ali Larter. I never understood why they sidelined her so much, especially in season 3 and 4.
ReplyDeleteSeason 4 especially, although I think she might have been away filming a movie for part of that year.
ReplyDeleteI guess there was only room for one blonde female main character to get storylines...
Peter, Claire and Niki.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I miss this show.

ReplyDeleteYeah I think I remember her being quite active in the first episodes and then vanishing and I think I read somewhere that was a movie involved. She only had a very minor scene in the finale rescuing HR which was a shame

ReplyDeletePeter (always my favorite character) > Hiro > Claire > Sylar
