AMC RENEWS The Walking Dead

FOR A FIFTH SEASON

Even The Walkers Saw It Coming As Network Opts To Bring Back

The #1 Show On Television Among Adults 18-49

New York – October 29, 2013 – AMC announced today that it has renewed The Walking Dead for a fifth season. The number one show on television among adults 18-49, The Walking Dead returned for a fourth season earlier this month and the premiere episode set a new record for the series, delivering 20.2 million viewers, live+3, and 13.2 million adults 18-49, a new record for any non-sports cable telecast.

“We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently – and most notably – with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.”

For season five, Scott Gimple will return as the series’ showrunner along with executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse. AMC also recently announced that it is developing a companion series to The Walking Dead, based on a new story and new characters from Robert Kirkman.

  1. Even though it's the most obvious renewal of the entire season, it is a good day when your favorite show is renewed! HELL YEAH!

  4. Last year, AMC renewed it in December. This year, they renewed right before Halloween!! I feel this season has been better than Season 3.

  6. I wonder if it will be 16 eps or 13 eps.
I kind of like the 16 episode set up.

  7. Honetstly amc could just renew it for three more seasons if they wanted to. this show has shown no signs of letting up and even if the numbers decline from season to season at some point it will still have better ratings than most other cable shows

  8. Not surprised, happy but unsirprised.
Only thing I'm growing more and more afraid of is Daryl or Rick biting it, to me they're the last true survivors (sure Glenn and Carl are still there but Glenn seems almost non present this season and Carl....just kill him already...) and the heart of the show:/

  9. Congratulations to the fans! It deserves the renewal after the smash-hit of a 4th season premiere it had!

  10. I'd be very careful with that sort of a decision. It's very risky business to renew the show for any more than one season at a time. In fact, it's very risky business to renew a show for a single more season, we just don't see all the contracts and commitment that goes into it. One season at a time is the best way to do it, which also ensures that the quality of the show doesn't decrease due to things like "because we are going to return no matter what".

  12. Not surprised, but still yay!

  13. The real surprise is that they kept Gimple as the showrunner.

  14. Thats certainly understandable. But you just get the sense from the executives that they went this show to last a long time and i certainly dont think the writers would become complacent just because they've been renewed for a few seasons. They pretty much operate under the assumption they'll be returning unless they hear otherwise

  15. Yeah, let's hope this means they have found their man (not that I've had any problems with the previous men)

  16. HEY! And they still have the same showrunner! A new show record -- for awhile, they were killing off whoever held that post faster than any of their characters.

  17. this show will last as long as they want to make it, even over 10 seasons is very very possible!

  18. Gimple as Showrunner was a bold choice. I was skeptical at first but, wow, has he done an amazing job so far. Him and the writers are really doing a great job with season 4 so far. I just hope they keep it up.
