The Tomorrow People - Episode 1.01 - Pilot - Review: We didn't pick the names

The Tomorrow People began to break out in the premiere of the CW's remake of the British series. It was a good episode, one that was filled mainly with the show setting the scene, but did feature a few shocking twists. Well, that is unless you watched the promo.

To start with, I need to express my disapproval at the way the CW effectively ruined one of the main shocks of the episode. Jedikiah being Stephen's uncle was a big moment for me, yet the majority of that scene was included towards the end of the promo. I found this disappointing, especially since its timeslot predecessor Arrow has been so good at keeping secrets.

Stephen's appearance in the neighbours' bed was strange at first, but it was clear enough when it was revealed that he is a Tomorrow Person. Robbie Amell delivers a terrific performance in this episode, something that seemed inevitable considering the quality of his cousin's acting in Arrow (Stephen Amell).

His outburst in classroom, although not aimed at the teacher, is something that every student in the history of forever has wanted to do in class. It was an awesome moment. The telepathy in the show is something that will take some getting used to, but with it being a key aspect of the show, it will make it a lot easier to do.

"It's funny, the teleporting usually sells it." Luke Mitchell was awesome in the role of John. However, his relationship with Cara (Peyton List) could make things complicated. Stephen's potential interest in Cara (and vice versa) could result in a love triangle, which I don't believe will do anything to enhance the show. Cara seems to be the brains behind the whole thing, and since the supposed interests, it could become difficult for her.

Stephen's multiple confrontations with the bully at the school proved interesting. His tactic to provide him with diarrhoea-inducing drugs was funny, while their altercation (along with that between Jedikiah and the Ultra agent) showed us one flaw about their incredibly abilities - The Tomorrow People cannot kill.

It was nice to see Sarah Clarke back on my screen, with her playing Stephen's mother. On some levels, I think she knows about both Stephen and his father's abilities. I wonder how long it will be before this becomes clear.

John's slip of the tongue informed Stephen of the travesty that is his father's more than biological relationship with him. Despite rejecting the idea at first, he eventually came around to watching the video left by his father.

Impressing girls is obviously not one of Stephen's strongest points, informing his girlfriend Astrid (Madeline Mantock) of his powers before attempting to show them off and failing... miserably.

Ultra's leader, Jedikiah Price seems evil, but his motives don't seem that bad. In truth, he's just trying to help the world by preventing strange phenomenons. His capture of Stephen wasn't to try and kill him "because he's (I'm) evil" as the promo seemed to suggest wasn't truthful, a fact which I'm rather glad about. Mark Pellegrino is a brilliant actor, and is perfectly fit for this role.

Upon Stephen's escape, he produced a new power, one which appears to stop time. That was so cool. He's clearly the strongest of them all, so if that's what he can do, it scares me to think what his father could do.

Despite the premature reveal of Jedikiah's relationship with Stephen, it came as a shock to me that he joined his uncle at Ultra. The supposed lies (that his father is dead) spun by Price will leave Stephen in two minds if it does come to a confrontation, especially since he seems to have morals. He is unlikely to want to allow Jedikiah to kill people without hesitation.




I enjoyed the episode. The premise is cool and something I've never seen before. It has a lot of potential. 8/10.
