In 2010 Supernatural conquered The Vampire Diaries in a brand new competition; a competition that surprised me with just how popular it was.
In 2011 Supernatural reigned supreme once again, making the most of the new extended 48 hour final poll to beat Fringe in what was probably the greatest final thus far.
In 2012 there was a new king of the Castle, as Supernatural fell into 5th place, with Nathan Fillion's Richard Castle making light work of Once Upon A Time to become the second STV Favourite TV Series Competition.
In mouth-watering style, Supernatural has risen from the ground in a way only a Winchester could, to try and reclaim the throne for a third time; to do so it must beat the reigning champion, the show that many have pegged as the show to beat this competition.
Shows such as Fringe, Hannibal and Bones couldn't break through Castle's defences. Can Castle succeed where Breaking Bad, LOST, Firefly and Charmed could not and break Supernatural hearts?
All is about to unfold.

Adam is best known on SpoilerTV since 2010 for his popular SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition; a yearly event for fans of the site. Adam is one of the founding duo of the Spoiler TV Podcast, and still is a regular co-host alongside old friends TheODI and CJ.
It's really tough to call a winner here, but if I had to guess, I can see the Winchesters nabbing the title back off of Castle... It's gonna be close though!

ReplyDeleteOh no, I watch and LOVE Castle AND Supernatural. Ugh, this is a really tough choice to make....I have to go with Supernatural. I have watched the Winchesters since 2005 and they will always be close to my heart. Good luck to both shows! I will be tremendously happy with whoever wins.

ReplyDeleteIt constantly surprises me which shows have the biggest fanbases - it's not relative to the viewership or in some cases (neither of these two finalists) the quality of the show. The mind boggles!

ReplyDeleteMy only problem with Supernatural is 5th season was a great ending. That was probably why I also felt the 6th season dragged on. I admit last season felt like it was getting it's creativity back.
ReplyDeleteBut still, any time I rewatch a tv show I usually tend to skip the last couple of episodes because they usually don't have that great final hit that great show requires. I just feel when it ends it won't live up to the season 5 finale and I'll be disappointed again.
So yes, for anyone scoffing at this, I'm voting based on potential futures.
Well, I think it also has a lot to do with luck. The fact that this final poll has opened the same day of Supernatural 9th season premiere means that most SPN fans are going to be online during these 48 hours. Even if Castle fans are sure a great number in this site and has big odds to win, it's just probably the best time of the year for a third SPN win.

ReplyDeleteCastle for me. I tried watching Supernatural and didn't even finish the episode, maybe it was an "off" episode, but I don't think it's my kind of show.

ReplyDeleteI haven't had the chance to watch Supernatural yet. It's on my extensively long list of shows to watch. I have watched every episode of Castle at least 6 times and I ship Caskett completely. I have been able to connect with the characters and understand their motives on the show more than any other I have watched, which is a long list. I also have to say the cast and crew involvement with the fans has been able to connect people around the world because of this show. The way other shows and movies are referenced in many is exciting to pick out. Each episode has it's own tone to it. Great transitions from a really tense episode to a light and absolutley hilarious one is well done.

ReplyDeleteMaking SPN fans sound like raving loonies is probably not the best way to encourage other people to watch it. It certainly won't help people on the fence to vote for Supernatural. How about you tell exactly why you think people would enjoy Supernatural and maybe get a few converts on the way. It has happened every time this contest has been run so far.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural gets my vote because it was the longest any show has ever been my favorite. Generally I get tired of or fall out with a show in seasons 3-5, but I watched all but 1 of Supernatural's episodes on the day it aired, mostly live viewing, for eight seasons. I followed it every time they changed the day and the series absolutely changed my life. If it weren't for SPN, I wouldn't be on this site nor gotten back into writing. I made many friends through the fandom and learned skills I never dreamed I would. I have spent more time, effort, money, and thought on Supernatural than all other TV shows I've watched in 40 years combined. I have been passionate about other shows but not near to the level I did with Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first came to SpoilerTV, it was through this very contest and Supernatural was competing with NCIS. I remember fighting the misconceptions that Supernatural was a teen girl show just because it was on the CW or that people only watched it for the eye candy, even though the Winchesters were almost always dressed in more layers than nuns. I am so glad that at least on this site those misconceptions have largely gone away and that many people actually tried it because of these contests. (Thanks Adam for that, by the way.) It is a testament to the positive things the SPN fandom can do when generally it gets bad press.
For anyone who has not tried Supernatural, I suggest you give A Very Supernatural Christmas (season 3, episode 8) a shot. It combines all the best of SPN together and will give you an idea if the show is for you. I've often said that SPN has something for everyone - humor, scares, drama, emoangsting, mytharc, gross scenes, etc. - so I highly suggest you check it out. I've made the mistake of letting a network, brand, or fandom keep me away from certain shows and many times have regretted it. For me, especially seasons 1-3, are some of the best times I have ever had with a TV show.

ReplyDeleteThere's no poll where I wouldn't vote for Supernatural and I really hope they can get back the title for a third year. That said, I know the quality of Castle and think it definitely deserves recognition. If it were to win again I'd be perfectly happy for Supernatural to take out 2nd, it's better than the 5th place we got last year.

ReplyDeleteI watch and love both shows but it is Supernatural that will always get my vote, because it the show I miss the most when on a haitus and simply because the Jensen and Jared are amazing actors who are so underrated and it is them along with Misha and Jim which is why I watch. Saying that I wouldn't be upset if Castle won, I would rather lose to that show than some of the others. Go SPN!!!

ReplyDeleteNo, I was once in the Supernatural fandom, but left because I got tired of seeing my friends and I being treated like trash, just because we interpreted things in a different way. It's really freaking sad when people get chased off from liking a show because of the rabid fangirls.
ReplyDeleteNo, not all are. I will admit. I'm friends with many SPN fangirls. The problem is though that there is a small and VOCAL group of fans that seem to take the helm in all discussions and thus, are representing the fandom to the wider world. And they really aren't giving the SPN fandom a good representation by referring to themselves as 'rabid'.

I love both shows. They've had their ups and downs, but the really intense Supernatural episodes were to me way better than the most intense Castle episodes, so that was what defined my vote towards the Winchesters.

ReplyDeleteSPN is the best tv show I have ever laid my eyes on and believe me when i say i have seen a lot of tv in my short life...in actual fact, i have seen a lot of the shows that were in the contest and i have never been obsessed with anything quite like i am with SPN even now after 8 yrs....

ReplyDeleteI have met literally thousands of Supernatural fans, and almost all of them have been wonderful people. I work at conventions (not just SPN), and out of the many huge fanbases I have gotten the chance to observe and interact with, I can say that the SPN people are the friendliest and generally happiest. I am sorry that you have gotten a bad impression, but please don't judge an entire fandom based on the way a small, but vocal, minority misbehaves online.

Yesterday, in the poll asking what did you think of the last Castle episode, the poors and awfuls were about 10-15 in each and today, "suddenly" the last time I checked there were about 50 in each! I wonder why!:) I´m pretty sure that 90% of the truly Castle fans don´t think "Need to Know" deserves less than OK.

Bake you an apple pie, maybe? They're SUPPOSED to make you miserable! That's why they're family!" We may fight like cats and dogs, but we're a family. We are united under the amazing show that is Supernatural, and we deserve that award. At the end of the day, we consider each other family. Gotta remember that this is a fandom where calling someone "bitch" or "jerk" is a compliment. Show me a fandom that doesn't complain! If you can find one, it's not a real, true fandom. We argue like old married couples, it's true. But at the end of the day, we are the best. And "I am sorry that your feelings are hurt, princess", but that's just the way it is. Btw, jealousy looks good on no one.

Nevertheless, I still love Castle; never watched SPN, but my friend says it's good, which I don't doubt at all. I just love Castle and the cast, especially Stana <3 (IDK why I'm saying all of this. TO express my love for Castle XD)

ReplyDeleteI disagree, if the fans are online when a tweet goes out from a major account, the numbers can jump quite quickly.. with the excitement over the premier, most of the fandom has been online, and the major accounts associated have as well... so if they tweet, we vote. (I have watched this effect myself... many times on polls on this site and others.)

ReplyDeleteThis was ridiculously hard for me. I love Castle, it was one of the first shows I sat down and watched all the available episodes in a row (I think 4 1/2 seasons at that point). Nathan Fillion is easily one, of if not my favorite, actors. The show is one of the best police procedurals I've seen, and I usually have an extreme dislike for them.
ReplyDeleteBut Supernatural opened me to all my other favorite shows. After my friend suggested I watched it, I got into it and then into Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Merlin. It also introduced me to the world of shipping, something that makes me enjoy television a bit more. (although if my ships don't work out I'm usually pretty cool with it.) So at the end of it all I chose the show that provide me with 8 (now 9) seasons of awesome content, fun moments, and fantastic storytelling.
So in the end I picked Supernatural.
Let me first of all say that I love Supernatural. I have watched every episode and I voted for it. But some people might not like this series and that is OK. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and so I support both you and TM in your decision to watch or not watch any show of your choosing. I think that Dahne had a great view point - instead of telling people to watch a show, explain to them why you watch it and let them come to their own conclusions. You catch more flies with honey then vinegar.

ReplyDeleteObviously you weren't, but it can be seen as pushy, and that can turn people off from fandoms. Point in case, Supernatural and Castle, shows that are obviously popular (made it till the end here) and can have some pushy fans, made the top of the list of fandoms that turn people off from watching a show on the poll a couple days ago.
ReplyDeleteI tried watching this show numerous times but i couldn't get into it.I thought maybe I wasn't in the mood,maybe it was the episode,but no,this show just wasn't for me...

ReplyDeleteTrue, but Castle was winning before. Both shows have their good points and both deserve recognition. I'm sure that SPN is going to win, so I don't think you have to worry. But no one's going to "let" anyone win anything. All the fans can do is vote and see what happens. :)

ReplyDeleteI've watched the first two seasons of SPN and I'm planning on continuing at some point, even though the show didn't particularly catch my attention. I liked it but I didn't love it. Though of course that may change in future seasons which is why I'm going to keep watching. :)

ReplyDeleteI never seen Castle but I have seen Supernatural so I voted for that. While Supernatural has been going down hill for the past few years, I still went with it because I like the chemistry between Sam and Dean, the bromance between Cas and Dean, Sam's continuing struggles, and Dean's passion for family first.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I wanted to say this. Fighting over a TV show is stupid so all of you who are arguing over that need to cut it out. This is supposed to be for fun and if you have to fight over a competition and a TV show, need to relax and have fun, and yes, I am going to say this, need to get a life outside of television. I can relate to having a television show be a big part of my life but I have never allowed it to consume my life to the point where I bitch, bitch, bitch....
I hate to tell you this but even if that was true 300 votes are hard to do in 8 minutes without external help. I'm sure you try your best to keep these types of polls clean but you do not have the capabilities to determine whether an IP is from a slaved device or not. As long as it is a separate IP there is no way in telling.

ReplyDeleteYes and those probably were bots driven. I am not saying that is a bad thing. It just shows there is no such thing as a clean poll. There are always ways to cheat using technology.
ReplyDeleteAll votes are via the web site and not bots, bots will a differtent HTTP Header Response code.
ReplyDeleteNope they were all from LOST fans, why would someone write a bot and in under 5 mins of a poll going live to cheat on LOST only poll for Lost only fans. Sorry but you really don't understand. There are NO bots on this polls. Period.
ReplyDeleteYou obviously do not understand. They contract to bot holders for a certain number. Then the bot holder allocate that certain of slaved devices to use on the poll. Have not heard of DNS? It is the same principle except they canned response. Technology is wonderful if you are on the Dark side.

There are NO Bots on this poll. If you don't believe me, fine, that's up to you. But I can assure you there is no cheating involved. I've been in IT as a developer and Network specialist since before the Internet started and I know how these things work.
Right but you can not tell if there is a person making that connection or a program. All you see is a separate connection.

ReplyDeleteWhile people in the Supernatural fandom realize you are quoting classic SPN scenes, this comment will turn everyone else off. I've flagged this as inappropriate because while calling people either of those 2 names is appropriate within the SPN fandom, it most certainly is not appropriate here.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you have tried it. I've found that people come into Supernatural and become fans for a myriad of reasons. For me the brother bond sucked me in right from episode 3 and it was the most important part of SPN to me. To others, the series got good with the onslaught of (um...nevermind, don't want to spoil it) in season 4.
