The Returned - Sundance Channel Trailer

Oct 25, 2013

Les revenants begins next Thursday on the Sundance Channel, and they have released a trailer for the show :

I have seen the show and this trailer is manipulative. And not because it fails to inform viewers that the show is in another language in order to not scare them away, American trailers usually do that.

It's because it tries to paint Les revenants as a horror series for commercial purposes, with this Halloween premiere (btw, the US is so taken with this "holiday", even grown-ups, it's crazy). It's a mystery drama series with fantasy elements, and the fantasy aspect becomes increasingly important towards the end, but it's not horror. There is barely one jump scare and no horrific moments in The Returned. There are a few gory scenes, admittedly, but nothing that'd make this trailer faithful to the mood of Les revenants, it's completely different.

Upcoming Sundance original series include :

- Rectify, coming back for a 10-episode second season.

- The Honourable Woman, an 8-episode political thriller miniseries co-produced with BBC Two and starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stephen Rea (The Shadow Line), Janet McTeer (Damages), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch), Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd), Genevieve O'Reilly (Episodes) and Lubna Azbal (Incendies). Filming has started July 29 in the UK and Morocco for 18 weeks.

- The Red Road, a 6-episode drama series from Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), with Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) as showrunner. The cast includes Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), Martin Henderson (Off the Map), Tom Sizemore (Hawaii Five-O), Julianne Nicholson (Boardwalk Empire), Allie Gonino (The Lying Game), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order SVU), Annalise Basso & Kiowa Gordon. James Gray (We Own The Night, Two Lovers, The Immigrant) has directed episode 1.01 this summer — filming has started August 19 in Atlanta.

All three series sound amazing and will all air in 2014.

  1. Okay, I'm going to watch this show because I've heard nothing but great things about it but I'm confused. Is Sundance Channel going to air this show dubbed in English or keeping it French with English subtitles?

  2. Haha, it's like one of those Youtube fan trailers. Quite well done really, but yeah, totally not representative of what the show is really like. Tis a beautiful show though, if you haven't seen it.

  6. Completely agree about the trailer. Sundance should have used the UK trailer, which captured the feel of the series. I think the series has some horror elements. Some of the very things you consider fantasy I consider horror, and that is what makes the series so unique.

  7. I already watched the first season of Les revenants and it's really great. I recommend!

  8. I hope it's French with subtitles...it's easier to follow dubbed, but I *HATE* it. It always sounds very unnatural, I much prefer to just follow along with words.

  9. Me too! For example, some animes have theirs dubbed in English and it sounds so awful and makes it harder to connect with the characters. Luckily I found out that the Sundance Channel IS leaving the show in French and putting subtitles in.
