The Originals - Episode 1.02 - House of the Rising Son - Review

Oct 9, 2013

“House of the Rising Son” brings Rebekah to New Orleans. She’s worried about Elijah because he’s not returning her calls. Although, no one seems to be happy to see her, since she left a trail of dead vampires behind. More of the Original family’s history is revealed, including how they met Marcel. Hayley and Klaus realize they’re willing to fight for their baby. I know most viewers wanted Elijah back this week, but unfortunately he remains in Marcel and Davina’s possession. However I have a feeling he’ll be back soon enough. This show is called “The Originals” after all.

Favorite character: Since this was a Rebekah-centric episode, I’ll of course go with her (plus she’s also my favorite Original). We got to see 2 Rebekah’s this week. One in 1820, as she once again loses the man she loves, thanks to Klaus. I actually liked her and Marcel up until the point where he chose becoming a vampire over her. However I do feel like there’s more to the story. Marcel seemed genuinely betrayed by Rebekah leaving New Orleans. The 2nd Rebekah is the one in the current timeline. She’s completely fed up with Klaus’ antics and yet is unable cut him out of her life. She eventually finds a way to make peace with her brother so that they can get Elijah back.
Biggest “Aaw” moment: As brief as the moment may have been, Marcel’s date with Cami was adorable. His feelings for her do seem to come somewhat out of the blue, so I do hope we’ll get a better explanation as to what drew him to her.

Favorite scene: I love all of the Rebekah and Hayley scenes, but my favorite is when Hayley gives Rebekah the remaining daggers. Finally someone is smart enough to get rid of those things (totally mentioned this in my previous review btw). I, and I’m sure Claire and Phoebe feel the same way, hope we get a lot more scenes with these two and that they develop a real friendship. They could both use a friend.
Biggest bitch moment: Davina’s encounter with Rebekah. She’s wondering why Rebekah’s mad at her, it may have something to do with the fact that she’s holding Rebekah’s brother hostage. Marcel certainly seems to have Davina wrapped around his finger. I wonder how she ended up there.

Favorite quotes: Rebekah: “Klaus, come out here and tell me what you’ve done with our brother, you narcissistic, backstabbing, wanker.”
Marcel: “Keep your sister in line.” Klaus: “I’d have greater chance of draining the Mississippi with a straw.”
Next week there seems to be a party, and we all know how those tend to end up bloody. With Marcel wanting to kill the Originals, he should really give the Gilberts a call, and Klaus and Rebekah wanting their brother and their home back, it seems like the war has officially started. Check in again next week for an all new review and sound off in the comments about what you thought of “House of the Rising Son”.

  3. The producers certainly like to see Elijah in a coffin it`s just ep 2 and he was stabbed already, i really really like the episode, it was better than the pilot i mean Rebekah made it 10000 times better, there is a lot background story to reveal i mean how Marcel gets to fake it`s death that not even Klaus knew about him being alive and who is that girl that si so powerfull, Bonnie need to step in to New Orleans and show that little Bi** to behave lol

  4. Thanks for the review Jamie. I actually liked the episode much more than I expected. Looks like I might just watch the show after all, despite my complete lack of sympathy for Klaus. I really did enjoy all Rebekah and Hayley scenes too. These two are probably my favorites on the show, right after Elijah. Oh, how I missed the guy! But I'm really glad to see Rebekah and maybe even Klaus (?) fighting to get him back. Go, girl!

  5. I'm guessing Elijah will stay in the coffin until Daniel finishes his work on Saving Hope (which is soon I hope)

  6. Anyone else predicting torture scenes with Elijah as Davina experiments on ways to kill an Original?

  7. I love the original family BUT without Elijah I have no reason to watch Klaus constantly bully & win all the time

  8. Guys relax, Elijah will come back, he is a regular. I also want him ASAP back but the problem is he has also a contract with Saving Hope, I don't think the producers would dagger him in the second episode just for fun, he will come back once he is done shooting Saving Hope.

And if there is a cross-over planned this season I want Bonnie to slap Davina that b*tchiness out of her!

  9. I liked how they brought back how Klaus is/(was) always 2 steps ahead. Not seen a lot of that recently, just him being a moody bitch.

  10. i would like to know how she is going to find the weapon, i mean in TVD they all get out of ideas, The Tree weapon was burn down and the last thing they were going to use was the "Cure" so im interest to see with what they come up with

  11. I was thinking the same thing about Marcel giving their location away. Otherwise why would Mikeal let him live or why didn't he ever went looking for them. I figure it would have been easier to find them then to take over an entire town. And as for Klaus being two steps ahead I agree but I wish we had seen more of that actually taking place instead of getting the whole plan in 30 seconds of flashbacks. And am I the only person who notice the very misplaced soundtrack in the last five minutes. Like I still can't get over that. I could not enjoy those scenes because of that song.

  12. There is still the white-oak-stake left.

Esther made this spell in 3x21 (or was it 3x20?) where she made the stake "immortal", the normal white-oak-stakes burn together with the originals (when they are staked), but Esther's white-oak-stake is immortal, it could kill Elijah, Rebekah and even Klaus. Last it was used by Silas to threathen Klaus in season 4, so if Davina founds about that stake, once they find it, they could kill the originals (but the stake is somewhere in Mystic Falls, maybe that would be the crossover, the quest to find the stake)

But we should not forget that once a Original dies, the entire bloodline dies with him. The bloodline of Kol & Finn are already destroyed (Mikael didn't have any), Marcel can not kill Klaus, he would die too, so he only could Elijah or Rebekah, but when he does that 2/3 of the vampire populations dies with them... I don't think he would risk that (but then again, Julie Plec is the producer, who knows what she smokes while written the scripts)

  13. Great review. wow, i really enjoyed this episode. I really like the the development of the story and all the flashbacks. I'm very interested to see what comes next. I also love the rhythm. very dynamic and fast. Reminds me the very gold days from TVD, back in S2.

'you narcissistic, backstabbing, wanker.” lol, oh, wow i love Rebekah. She is pure gold and i agree, i love her scenes with Hayley. Hope they develop a great friendship. And also, bring back Elijah!! the poor guy always want to do the right thing and somehow end up being stabbed.

  14. Has anyone read any spoilers that indicate Elijah will be back before season 1 ends? I know it only runs for 13 episodes. :(

  15. you may forgot about white stake.rebekah gave it to elijah and then he gave it to klaus.who knows what he did with it?maybe burnnnnn

  16. The white-oak-stake is "immortal", it can't be destroyed (Esther made that spell where she took the essence of the gilbert ring and gave it to the stake).

It is possible that Klaus has now the stake, i just thought Silas had it (wasn't it last used by Silas in 4x1-something?)

No matter who has it, Marcel could find it, (but I hope that the stake is hidden, nobody can find it anymore, but we are talking about Julie Plec, she destroyed the great mythology of that universum in season 3/4 just so she could save one of her dead "fan favourites" ala Jeremy)

I hope no one finds the stake anymore, but finding the stake could be a possiblity, so a weapon still exists (but there is still the bloodline-rule, I don't think Marcel would kill an entire vampire-bloodline)

But then again, is Julie Plec, she will probably find again another weapon or ritual (this storyline is shit, TVD had it for 1/2 season and it was useless) where you can kill an Original without its bloodline, who knows what that women does, TVD had such an awesome mythology during season 1-2 (first half of season 3 too), no logic holes or something, the rules were clear, but since Kevin Williamson left the show and Julie has the control she breaks her own mythology-rules just so she can get what she wants (like the Silas raising the dead-Story or Elena (3 months old vampire) and Jeremy (a few weeks old Hunter) can kill an 1000 year old Original?

In season 2 there were the biggest bad-ass of all, everyone was afraid of them but now in season 4 two teenager can kill one? My point is, there is one known weapon left and since Julie likes to fuck up her own mythology-rules I wouldn't wonder if Davina finds in 4-5 episodes a superweapon but the Mystic Falls-Gang couldn't do it in 1/2 season...

  18. *cries an endless amount of tears* just give us Elijah back

the episode was great tough, love the fact that this show doesen't just pretend to be dark via. tone but actually is because of its storytelling.

  19. I loved the Originals on TVD and was super excited when I heard they were getting their own show and I haven't been disappointed yet.
One of my favorite parts of this episode was when Klaus was explaining to Hayley why he was so hell bent on dethroning Marcel. Klaus took him in and raised him as his son and ultimately he feels betrayed. (and we all know how Klaus feels about betrayal) While Klaus mourned him, Marcel capitalized on them being run out of town by Mikel. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if it's revealed that Marcel is the one that gave them over to Mikel. It would make logical sense. He would never be "King" as long as the real Originals were around.
I agree with another commenter that made mention that it was good to see Klaus being two steps ahead again. That's one of the things that I have always loved about Klaus; how smart and manipulative he is. It was good to see him back on his game instead of just brooding and being an a$$. I can't wait for Elijah to be undaggered. We'll finally get to see all the siblings working together for a common goal (because we all know that Rebekah is sticking around) Speaking of which, I love Rebekah and Hayley both so much more now that they are away from TVD. They'll really get to shine here and I hope their friendship continues to grow. Seems to me like they could both use a friend.
I am fully on board with The Originals and am yearning to see what happens next!!
