    Actually it means they started following him when he first joined the CBI(2004), which was a year after his wife died and he gave up the tv show and the fake psychic schtick.

    It is, episode one isn't jane's first case, it's van pelts first case. We eventually saw jane's first case in flashback, and season 1 starts with him having worked at the CBI for a few years.
