The Mentalist - Episode 6.02 "Black-Winged Redbird" - Review

Is Teresa Lisbon dead or alive? Of course she's alive, but she's still shocked. Remember when Patrick Jane told he wasn't freaking out? Well, that time has gone. Probably one of the most touching scenes of the episode was watching Jane asking for water and then coming to clean Lisbon's face from that blood smile.
I loved Lisbon's nightmare. According to me, it was so telling, and made me change my mind again about Red John.
Lisbon dreams about coming back in the CBI. As she steps into, she sees Gale Bertram painting Red John's smile on a window of the bureau. She's horrified by Reed Smith who just killed Grace Van Pelt, Wayne Rigsby, Kimball Cho and Patrick Jane. Then, Raymond Haffner turns to her saying "I'm sorry" and hit her...

Lisbon wakes up, she's lying in a bed at the hospital, but there's Jane comforting her, reassuring she's safe. That was a tender moment I liked between Jane and Lisbon. She's hardly breathing but he's sitting very close to her, and gentle touches her hair to make sure she's ok.
Another story is Haffner. When he comes to visit Teresa, you can see she's nervous and she doesn't know how to act. What gave me goosebumps was his behaviour towards her when he said "I like you Teresa, I really do. And one of those days, you and me... we'll have a time."
In my opinione, I've always thought that Ray had a crush on Teresa and I won't be surprised of he's Red John at the end... yes, since Partridge is dead, my bet is on Haffner. Still, another question is open: why didn't Red John end his work with Lisbon and let her alive?

Another scene I liked was Jane in the same office with Bertram, Sceriff McAllister and Reed. It must have been hard for him to be surrounded by a possible Red John. The three of them look suspicious, and you can smell the tension in there.
Sophie Miller. Patrick Jane's former psychiatric is dead ("Diner's in the oven"), but she left with an important clue. She personally recorded her teraphy session with a man, J. Roth. As Jane and Liston listen to the record, it becomes clear to me that Red John probably must be more than one.
Also: who is Carmen Lee? In the episode, she's the person the nurse mistakenly walks in when she enters in Lisbon's room. As fans, you can recall that name is not new.

The murder case was obviously secondary to the big hunt for Red John. It was interesting to investigate on why a man had committed suicided in the very first scene of the episode. Drones, explosions and a pleasant plot that, in some ways, have relieved Red John's storyline.

Who do you think is Red John? Why didn't he killed Lisbon?

  1. I still think Partridge might not be dead! We did not see his body! He could have accomplices in the forensics department who covered for him and said that he was DOA. When instead he is Red John and knocked Lisbon down, painted the smiley on her face and just vanished.

What sense would it make if RJ kills off all the other suspects leading Jane right to him. It would make much more sense for Red John to fake is own death in order to divert the attention to the other suspects.

And also, didn't Heller say that there is a clue as to who RJ is in the beginning of this season? There were pigeons in last weeks and in this weeks episode that did not have to be there! Partridge as a word is also a type of bird that kinda looks like a pigeon. So maybe that was a clue?

One last thing, do any of you remember the scene in last weeks episode when Jane says to Lisbon, that if Partridge was RJ he'd have to be a pretty good actor, and Lisbon says, that RJ had to be a good actor no matter what. I'm pretty sure that's a clue! In the last scene not only Jack Plotnick is acting but Brett Partridge is as well :-)

  2. Nice review..i think Killing Lisbon would have spoiled the game..If she had been killed, jane would have givenup. .and red john can't loose his only worthy enemy..I think producers are trying to throw us off track, they'll surprise us withthe name we least expect

  3. The producers have confirmed the death of Brett patridge.. Im all for theories. .They are deliberately narrowing the suspects

  4. I think Red John is Ray Haffner and didn't kill Lisbon because he is in love with her...

  6. Good theory, but I think Partridge is really gone :( and that's a pity, because I've always rooted for him...

  7. I think by next episode, my theory will change again lol

  9. Here are my thoughts but I really dont know if I remember correctly...I listened to the Roth discription again and Sophie Miller said: ...there is every indication that his phobia issues are real
whether acrophobia or some other issue remains to be seen
Something rang when she talked about phobia...I think that one of the suspects has a phobia (not riding an elevator) I feel like I remember Kirkland not liking elevators...I can be totally wrong of course, dont know; maybe I'm just imagining things...maybe you guys know something?
One other thing: I think Haffner whistling was a little too obvious, wasn't it?!
And when did we hear the name Carmen Lee first? I cant remember...

  10. I think that the sheriff was obvious while he was whistling, because was in the right moment when sophie was talking about it!

  11. I started to think about him as Red John while I was watching "Red barn": when he was having lunch with Teresa I thought he had a crush, and when she asks him "were you at the farm?" and he says "Lisbon we're still friends right?".... now, an innocent man would answer "yes" or "no", or "what do you think?"... but "we're still friends?"??? what kind of answer is that???!!

  12. Me neither.( the Carmen Lee thing) I tried to google it but without any results. :D

    ReplyDelete
  13. yeah I think that was even more obvious

  14. Plus, when Lisbon asked if he was a member of Visualize, he seemed nervous...

  15. I've done some research about this Carmen Lee.... Apparently this person never appeared in the show, everyone is talking about her from last night......
The only "interesting" thing is that the name Carmen in latin means "song" or "poem".. my first thought was William Blake, but I couldn't find any connection with his poems or paintings...
So: no idea of who she could be!

  16. I think, that during the first 5 season, PJ has inflitrated to police machine to discover and kill the principal responsibles of the death of her wife.
Another options is, he caused her death and is obsessed ( who knows him or a BH - his creator ) that 7 guys are "responsible" for not revealling him ( if he could find out more there can be 8,9... ). He could find them only within police system...
He's crazy by brilliant mind. Now, in the 6th season he will want to kill them ( doesn't matter order ). It's seems, that Kirkland is very close to discover him - for this reason his visit to PJ office. Of course another of them have their own little secrets...
Another murders related with RJ were by people copying him ( and they finished death ), people could revealed his identity or past and some could be only crimes manipulated by him to confuse ( poor Lorelei ).
He's a super-dotated and very-very bad maniac ( I don't know if the best or worst of TV Series ). I don't know, if he wants to die if the all responsibles are dead - and I can't tell if he kills everybody he wants - it's decision of BH.
Then, I'm not sure if BH doesn´t ironize/critize classic police methods, showing in the simple cases ( not only to enjoy us ), PJ is able to solve them fastly or faster like another... For this reason I seem, the most of "current" cases are "quite easy"... And majority of true movie "experts" condemn this serie.

What's the Lisbon paper, I don't really know, he wants she kill him in the end?

So, i'ts from me after SE0602. You can be agree or not.
    Good day for all members.

  17. Well, if Haffner is Red John, he didn't kill Teresa because of the crush he has on her.

And to be honest... if Red john would have killed Lisbon, Patrick would have given up because he would have been way to broken to continue the game in a way that Red John would want to. But now, he has put Jane and Lisbon in a situation he will sure love: they both will have to deal with the fact that he could strike again any second, any time he likes - that he can get Lisbon wherever he wants to do whatever he wants the moment he chooses to. I believe this is a very funny game to Red John. He knows that Patrick fears nothing more than losing his partner, the one person he can count on, but he can't protect her. That has Red John shown him. So now, Jane and Lisbon can't do anything but wait if and when Red John will strike again. This makes the game more interesting because when they fear he could strike any moment, he has power over them...

But: just my two cents ;)

  18. don't see Bertram or the Sheiff being Red John...a bit past middle age and reed Smith is a bit fat so it either Ray or Kirkland

  19. Carmen is related to the male name Carmine. Carmine is also "the general term for some deep red colors that are very slightly purplish but are generally slightly closer to red than the color crimson is." Was Red John behind the nurse/doctor asking for Carmen Lee? If so, why?

  20. Good job, man! :-) We'll see what's going on, they promised answers in Episode 4.

  21. I see Bertram or Sceriff McAllister as minions, not as RJ. The fact the in Lisbon's nightmare Bertram is painting RJ's smile, made me think about that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think it would be spelled Carmine Lee. That way carmine is a natural color of red used to make paint and food coloring. A lee is a shelter. In other words, Red John gave Lisbon a temporary reprieve or shelter.

  23. "And when did we hear the name Carmen Lee first?"

Maybe the name reminds you of the episode "Where in the World is Carmine O'Brian" (4x06)

  24. Thank you, i guess :-/

  25. I' ve just finished reading the articles again. Bruno Heller, doesn't really say the Brett Partridge is dead! The reporter assumes that he is dead and Heller doesn't deny it. So Partridge might still be an option! I think it would be the best surprise!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, we'll find out in 2 episodes. .

    ReplyDelete
  27. Are you sure??? I can't believe it! To me he has been RJ for the last 4 years!! Who else is there? ;-) Do you have the link to the article in which the producers confirm his death? I've to see it with my own eyes ;-)
