Update: 4th October We've changed the point at which widescreen will start to work to 1500px.

Update: 4th October Thanks for all the great feedback here in the comments and via email. As a result we've made a few tweaks.

Hopefully it's a bit less "in your face" ;)

- Main Menu Font has been reduced
- Menu Bar is now 1 line, showing just the most popular links.
- Author and Comments Links have been reduced
- Sidebar Header fonts reduced
- Sidebar Links and Text have been de-bolded.
- Recent Comments Fonts have been reduced and de-bolded.

Please keep your feedback coming if you have any.

Hey All,

As some of you with wide monitors have already noticed, we now have a widescreen version of the site, for anyone running their browser wider than 1500px.

We're just trying this out to see how many people use it and how we can improve things for people with wide monitors.

General Improvements

- Videos will play much wider.
- Sidebar Text Font increased to improve readability
- Menu Text Font increased to improve readability
- Title, Author and Label Font increased to improve readability
- Article Text has been increased
- Comments section is now wider
- Embedded Spreadsheets and Tables will display more of the spreadsheet before you need to scroll
- The What's on Tonight Listing should be easier to read
- Increased width for articles
- Increased sidebar width

If you are running a wide monitor but still prefer the normal, more compact version, simply reduce the width of your browser to be less than 1500px and the old style will reappear.

There will no doubt be a number of little bugs or layout issues that we might have missed as this is the first version.

If you have any suggestions about how the wider screen can be improved or if you find any layout bugs please let us know in the comments below.

As you know we love to hear your thoughts and opinions and we really do read every suggestions and criticism in order to make the site as best we can.

  3. Can you do it again. We've not received anything. Thanks.

  4. how do I reduce the width? I'm fairly new at Google Chrome

    ReplyDelete
  5. Just drag the browser window on the right to decrease the width of the browser.

  6. Ah thanks, but I still prefer having my browser full screen, I'll get used to it =)

  7. No worries ;)

If after using it for a while you find something really is not working well or too big/too small please let us know here. All feedback is welcome ;)

  8. I like that it's larger, but the font seems like the site is shouting at me.

  9. Thanks for the feedback @Robin Smyth

Which fonts in particular are you referring to? We'll be making some small tweaks to it over the next few days.

  10. The headline fonts on the main page. Actually the entire headline bar thing (including the tags and author et all) is a little big on my end. I don't know how everyone else feels about it....

  11. WOAH! Holy crap. Yes i confess i don't like it either. The top banner and headings and down the site all just feel like someone has messed with the resolution of my browser and it's all right in my face, but if i zoom out to get a bit of space and less 'shouty' then i can't read the Discus comments.
I'll likely get used it, i'm just not a big fan of big text so it feels like the website just went back to the 90s, lol. I have a widescreen monitor in order to get small text and lots of space, rather than bigger websites, if you see what I mean? I'm afraid decreasing the width of the browser is not really terrible efficient, i visit the site throughout the day so i'll be reducing and increasing the width all the time and that'll be kind of a pain to be honest.

Anyway, glad if it makes things easier to read for some! Thanks for letting us feed back. :)

  12. Thanks for the feedback @pheral much appreciated.

Stay tuned for some update that will hopefully make things a bit better ;)

  13. Thanks, and either way there's no way this site can ever become less than 'uber freaking awesome' and essential daily reading for me. :D Good luck tweaking and developing things!

  14. I'm experiencing the same as you, and this might help: I've discovered that if you zoom out on this site, Chrome only remembers that setting for this site. So press CTRL and then minus key (next to the zero along the top) to zoom out as much as you like, and then every time you visit this site Chrome will show you that level of zoomed out, but won't do that on other sites. I'm zoomed out at 75% now and although the comments are a little small, i can still read them, and this works well for me.

  15. Oh and zooming out in chrome is working great for me, just discovered it will remember the zoom setting for just this site and no other, perfect! So comments a little small when at 75% zoomed out, but i can read them, this will work for me. :)

  16. Ha thanks. We've just done a few updates as highlighted in the original post that hopefully make things a little better.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks, we've done some tweaks and updated the post above.

    ReplyDelete
  18. When does this come out??

    ReplyDelete
  19. It already has :) If your browser is wider than 1400px then you will see the new widescreen design.

  20. Please, please reduce the size of the text on the new style. It's way too big. I dislike it so much I am shrinking my browser jst to look at the site adn then re-enlarging it again when I move on to look at any other web pages. I am sure the text does not need to be that large.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That does look a lot better! So i think now the only reason i'd stay zoomed out is that currently on the homepage on 100% i can only see three posts, whereas if i zoom out to 75% i can go back to seeing five. Less scrolling needed. :)

  22. Hi @Julia EasonCan you be more specific? Which fonts in particular?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thank, we have just fixed some spacing issues so hopefully that makes it a little better.

    ReplyDelete
  24. nooooo, i'm back to the smaller size!! i have 1440... what a bad luck! :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yay i'm out of the widescreen resolution starting size now anyway, so i don't have to use it anymore, thaaaanks!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, all of the main text fonts - so the headlines, the posted by, the show links on the menu page (the headers and side bar look fine) and then all the text if you click on an article to read it is also too large. Could do with being the same font size as on the old version.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks, we'll bare that in mind. The idea of the widescreen was to improve the legibility of a number of the textual areas.

We'll be collating all the feedback for a couple of weeks and then base any further changes on that.

We've already made some changes this morning and also changed the breakpoint from 1400px to 1500px

    ReplyDelete
  28. Excellent, will keep an eye out for further changes.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Andrea if you drop me an email, I might be able to help you if you really want to continue to use the Widescreen. My email is darkufo@spoilertv.com

    ReplyDelete
  30. I dont see it :( but I don't mind

    ReplyDelete
  31. Can you not reduce your browser width to below 1500px? That should revert you back to the the normal view.

Can you provide more specific details of what exactly you don't like?

    ReplyDelete
  32. yay, i have 1600, it's perfect! so don't push further that value, ok? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ha, that's great. No we'll be leaving it at 1500px ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Everyone Hold Ctrl, then Press -(minus) two times.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The video's need to be fixed, the video's don't stay in ratio anymore (when in widescreen) for me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Leon, can you take a screenshot and email it to me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Is this what is causing the text to be either way too big or way too small? Really annoying, I liked it the way it was :(

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks @Andrea Glad you find it easier to read

    ReplyDelete
  39. They will only be larger if your browser is >1400px as explained above.

    ReplyDelete
  40. As explained above, just reduce your browser to less than 1400px to return to normal.

    ReplyDelete
  41. this is amazing, at home I keep the screen quite not very close and I had to zoom in to easily read the post! good point!

    ReplyDelete
  42. So much easier to read on my widescreen laptop. Good job

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh and the larger videos are great.

    ReplyDelete
  44. http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6109/ip4u.png

But after checking a few promo's/sneak peaks it seems like it are only a few vids that are out of ratio (due to wrong uploading?), no problem with youtube at all. So looks like the problem is not on your side. Sorry! :D

Edit: It are all the CW video's
