As you may have seen in the Press Release posted earlier today John Merrick will be making an appearance in episode two. He is played by Joseph Drake, who had to undergo hours in the make up chair every day in order to become The Elephant Man.
Matthew MacFadyen has said that Inspector Reid, who is based on a real life policeman of the time, would most likely have known and worked with Merrick. He was a resident of Whitechapel in 1890 when the series is set and was in fact guarded by the real H Division.
Merrick becomes closely involved in an investigation which viewers will see unfold in the second episode of the new series, which can be seen on BBC1 on 4th November.

The prosthetics look amazing!
ReplyDeleteThis US viewer is looking forward to the series in December. Sounds like Joseph is presented in a sympathetic, dignified light.
