Season 2 of Ripper Street is back on our screens after only a short 8 months hiatus, which is no mean feat when you consider the extra attention to detail that's required to make such an exhaustive period drama. 'Pure as the Driven' is a strong opening episode; the dialogue fast-paced and witty, the costumes and sets beautifully authentic and the performances impressive and nuanced.
Jack the Ripper is becoming a faded memory, but there is no let-up in the violence and chaos on the streets of Whitechapel, and it is pushing H Division's resources to breaking point. The last thing Inspector Reid needs is police officers being brutally assaulted on his patch, so when a visiting sergeant from the neighbouring Limehouse station is hurled from a window onto the iron railings below he is quick to react.
This leads Reid, and his loyal deputies Drake and Jackson, into investigating the goings-on in a new formed Chinatown where they discover evidence of a newly synthesised, and completely legal, opiate being made right on their doorstop. And what's worse, it looks like K Division's Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine could be deeply involved. The question is, just how underhanded is he, and how far through the force does the corruption go?
'Pure as the Driven' is on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD at 9pm, Monday 28th October, to see you through until then here are some dialogue teasers.
