-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led the midweek troops on this second Wednesday of the new TV season with its combination of “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (#1: 6.2 rating/10 share; – 7 percent from the year-ago edition set in the Philippines), “Criminal Minds” (#1 overall: 7.2/12 from 9-10 p.m.; – 3 percent) and “CSI” (#1: 6.1/11; -13). The minor losses for the trio are still very livable, and the abrupt departure of Colton…again…from still addictive “Survivor” is all the more reason to hopefully believe his “15 minutes” are officially up. Enough already!
There were two series premieres last night: sitcom “Super Fun Night” on ABC and crime drama “Ironside” on NBC.
“Super Fun Night” debuted with a third-place 5.5/ 9 in the overnights at 9:30 p.m., which was on par with the year-ago season-opening episode of former time period occupant “Suburgatory” (5.6/ 9 on 10/17/12) and 31 percent below lead-in “Modern Family” (#1: 8.0/13 at 8 p.m.). While no one expected “Super Fun Night” to fully maintain the ample “Modern Family” lead-in, given the hype this is a disappointing start for Rebel Wilson and company. Don’t forget that most new shows drop 10 to 20 percent in week two (and another 10 percent in week three).
The revival of “Ironside” on NBC with Blair Underwood, meanwhile, fit like a glove out of veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at 9 p.m., with a second-place 5.0/ 9 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, this was six percent above year-ago occupant “Chicago Fire” (4.7/ 8 on 10/10/12), and the retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “SVU” was 98 percent. Consider this a positive start for “Ironside.”
Overall, “Law & Order: SVU” averaged a 4.9/ 8 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was 17 percent above the 4.2/ 6 on the year-ago evening. For a show in its 15th season, any growth is unprecedented.
Earlier on NBC was relocated sophomore drama “Revolution” at a fourth-place 3.9/ 7 from 8-9 p.m., which was 42 percent above the failed year-ago combination of sitcoms “Animal Practice” (2.7/ 4 on 10/10/12) and “Guys With Kids” (2.8/ 4). One week earlier, “Revolution” opened with a 4.4/ 7 in the overnights, which translated into 6.81 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data. In other words, “Revolution” is doing better than this critic personally expected.
In episode two news, ABC sitcom “Back in the Game” dipped to a 4.7/ 8 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m. (#2), which was 13 percent below its series-opener (5.4/ 9 on Sept. 25) and on par with year-ago occupant “The Neighbors.” Comparably, the retention for “Back in the Game” out of always-reliable “The Middle” (#2t: 5.7/ 9) was acceptable at 82 percent.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was sophomore drama “Nashville” at a third-place 4.1/ 7, which was seven percent below its season-opening 4.4/ 8 one week earlier (which translated into 6.50 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49). While it could be better, it can also be worse.
Over at Fox, two hours of “The X Factor” was on the map with a second-place 5.7/ 9 from 8-10 p.m., which could challenge both ABC and CBS for first among adults 18-49 (and other key demos) for the evening. But this was 16 percent below the 6.8/11 one year earlier.
The CW capped off the night with a clips edition of “Arrow” (#5: 1.3/ 2) and two repeat episodes of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (#5: avg. 0.9/ 2 from 9-10 p.m.).

'In other words, “Revolution” is doing better than this critic personally expected.'
ReplyDeleteDid I read that right?! Marc admitting he's wrong?!?! Hope this bodes well as he seems to be pointing out!
Hah I just came to comment on the same thing, it must pain him to admit this about a sci-fi show!
ReplyDeleteThe real question is what this will translate to in the 18-49 demo.
ReplyDeleteprobably a 1.7
ReplyDeleteCSI returns first against Ironside and Nashville, not surprising...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Survivor spoiler, Mr. Marc Berman.
ReplyDeleteReally glad Nashville isn't a loser. Super Fun Night was not as horrible as I thought it would be. It's not really solid but it's definitely watchable for the most part and it's not the worst thing out there.
ReplyDeleteI heard they changed the episode order because of the reception of the original pilot.
ReplyDeleteYup they did. The premiere is actually the 2nd ep and the Pilot will now be episode 3. They are really trying to make the show work, much like how the scrambled the order of s1 of Happy Endings to make it more "procedural" to attract more casual viewers
ReplyDeleteYeah, I thought so.
ReplyDeleteCrossing my fingers for Revolution.
ReplyDeleteIronside had pre-season views. For example, I watched it on XFinity last month. Did pre-season viewship count?
ReplyDeleteDont get your hopes up, the show has not done nothing but dropping since last year. it ownt survive its second season.
ReplyDelete1.5, Revolution is doomed.
ReplyDeletea 3.2 for Super Fun Night seems far off from disappointing. I think critics and the network should learn by now that nothing will keep up with the Mod Fam ratings
ReplyDeleteThat's why Marc's opinion isn't reliable.
ReplyDeleteI really wish ABC had put Trophy Wife after Modern Family, instead of Super Fun Night.
ReplyDeleteI'm just thinking, this is a really bad excuse but, could Trophy Wife be another 'Cougar Town' situation in which viewers are turned off because of the name?
ReplyDeleteIt does feel like a better fit but I think the network sees and wants Super Fun Night to succeed if in fact it will only have one new comedy to renew ala last season
ReplyDeleteAs predicted SVU lost half his viewers and is back to normal number, the demo should drop in the next few weeks too
ReplyDeleteI doubt but maybe. I think Cougar Town is the extreme exception to the rule
ReplyDeleteI think that is part of the reason, yes, the fact they are high on Rebel Wilson, but another reason is likely the fact that they've learned from last year that they cannot go for young skewing hangout comedies on tuesdays since fox will kill them anyway, so they went for family comedies there instead. It is indeed better counterprogramming, so it does make some sense.
ReplyDeleteNot doomed, but it is not good. I was hoping for a 1.6/1.7. Damn. It is 100% a bubble show now :s
ReplyDeleteIt is a bubble show at this point, so it could go either way.
ReplyDeletegood point.
ReplyDeletePossibly.
ReplyDeleteThey don't count the number of people who DVR the show. What did you expect, no offense but the numbers tend to be higher for any season premire including SVU. It's not at it's normal rating at all, SVU has had higher ratings for various episodes. I wouldn't call the rating it's usual number cause it's not
ReplyDeletenot too bad for Nashville. YAY
ReplyDeleteNashville did better than I expected yes. Its lead-in dropped 1.1 (possibly more in finals) and it only fell by 0.1. I thought it would fall more, so nicely done for it.
ReplyDeleteI am also glad The X Factor is up, I guess people wanted to check out the new "Four Chair Challenge".
ReplyDeleteIt's about where it was last season.
ReplyDeleteIronic though considering they have a young skewing hangout comedy on hold for midseason
ReplyDeleteWhich I suspect will air on Tuesdays, at least as a planned long term option. I think Mixology looks awesome, it was one of my favorite trailers for this season, but I am expecting a How to Live/ Family Tools kind of treatment
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about the number of viewers, 5-6 millions is what the show averaged last season. They trolled viewers into thinking Benson was gonna get raped and that's why it premiered high. Now that viewers know it didnt happen, the show has no interest anymore. And the 2.0 demo will drop soon and go back to the 1.5/1.6 the show averaged last year.
ReplyDeleteSame! I was really excited but got sad when it got hold for midseason. For me that basically meant its dead, but I'll try to be hopeful since the concept feels very fresh
ReplyDeleteHe wrote that Ironside was a positive start with a 0.6 drop from its lead-in...
ReplyDeleteGood for Nashville & MF for being steady.
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda starting to get worried about Revolution. I hope it doesn't fall much further.
Agreed. This is only the 2nd episode of this season, and it'll reach lower as the season continues (especially, in the spring.)
ReplyDeleteCan't say I'm surprised though.
That´s the problem with relying in house hold...the demo is usually better than it; like having LW:SVU (2.0) and Ironside (1.4) at honorable mention:)
ReplyDeleteI am officially worried!
ReplyDeleteNot terrible ratings for the x factor BUT i think it should be a summer show. but don't think FOX people would do that. And i'm a little worried for Revolution
ReplyDeleteImagine when the show goes on hiatus. This spring ratings erosions will be killer
ReplyDeleteSo hopping Revolution will go up!
ReplyDeleterating-wise yes, but they have a bigger overall audience now
ReplyDeleteA 3.2 is a Disappointing and a 1.4 gets a Honorable Mention? Berman is a funny man.
ReplyDeleteYeah.
ReplyDeleteNot looking to good for Revolution....Nice going Kripke and company.
ReplyDeletePoor Revolution...
ReplyDeleteIt was adjusted up in finals, so it looked a little less bad. I think the show is not as doomed as some think. It is definitely in risk though. If it could stop falling now it would be fine.
ReplyDeleteIt did go up in finals to a 1.6. but yeah let's hope it goes up next week!
ReplyDeleteI'm sad about Back In The Game's numbers but what can you expect with how little ABC is promoting it! A 1.8 and over 6 million viewers when I've seen about 3 promos the whole week is really great in my book. Fangles (our fandom name) and the cast/creators will just have to keep up the promoting!
ReplyDeleteThe reason ABC are not promoting Back In The Game is because they have realized just how awful it is and therefore are letting it die.
ReplyDeleteJust because you do not like Back In The Game doesn't mean it is awful and doesn't deserve a chance...
