-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped Tuesday, of course, besting No. 2 NBC by a considerable 58 percent in the overnights. But the results among adults 18-49 (as well as other key young adult demographics) could be neck-and-neck between the two.
Rock-solid “NCIS” led the night with a 12.2 rating/19 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. Next was dominant performances by spin-off “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.4/15 at 9 p.m.), followed by relocated “Person of Interest” (8.1/14 at 10 p.m.), which was only 10 percent below the 9.0/14 it scored one year earlier in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour (out of “Two and a Half Men”).
In season-premiere news, “The Biggest Loser” on NBC – now a one-hour edition – finished third at 8 p.m. with a respectable 4.9/ 8 in the overnights. Comparably, that was a nine percent increase from its most recent time period opening performance (4.4/ 6 from 8-10 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013), which translated into 6.39 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data. “The Biggest Loser” previewed on Jan. 6, 2013 with a similar 4.7/ 7 in the overnights.
Next on NBC was a now one-hour Tuesday edition of “The Voice” (#2: 8.5/14), which will own the 9 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 (and other key demos), followed by relocated “Chicago Fire” at a second-place 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m. Week-to-week, “Chicago Fire” increased by six percent, with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.7/14) of 61 percent.
On ABC, week four of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” finished second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 5.1/ 8, which was just four percent below the 5.3/ 9 one week earlier. And that 5.3 in the overnights translated into 7.87 million viewers and a 2.9/ 9 among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). In other words: this is still positive. Four-week overnight track for “Marvel’s Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D”: 7.7/12 – 5.6/ 9 – 5.3/ 9 – 5.1/ 9.
Week four of ABC lead-out sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.7/ 6) and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.9/ 5) also slipped to series lows, with erosion from one week earlier of seven percent for “The Goldbergs” and 12 percent for “Trophy Wife.” Four-week overnight track for “The Goldbergs”: 6.0/ 9 – 4.3/ 7 – 4.0/ 6 – 3.7/ 6. Four-week overnight track for “Trophy wife”: 4.7/ 7 – 3.3/ 5 – 3.5/ 5 – 2.9/ 5. Note to ABC: If “Super Fun Night” ultimately fails, and chances are it will, “Trophy Wife” looks more compatible out of “Modern Family.”
At 10 p.m., another encore of ABC’s “Scandal” in place of canceled “Lucky 7” could not compete with a 2.0/ 4 (#3) at 10 p.m.
On Fox, both “Dads” (#4: 2.7/ 4) and “Brooklyn Nine Nine” (#4: 2.8/ 5) posted overnight growth from one week earlier, with both up by 12 percent. Comparably, “Dads” was just four percent below “Raising Hope” on the year-ago evening (2.8/ 4 on 10/16/12), while “Brooklyn Nine Nine” increased by 33 percent from short-lived “Ben and Kate” (2.1/ 3). As new shows begin to settle in at this point, any growth must be considered a positive. And, let’s be honest, that prostate exam scene on “Dads” last night was a hoot!
Next on Fox was “New Girl” at a fourth-place 2.8/ 4 at 9 p.m., which did not build from one week earlier, followed by sophomore “The Mindy Project,” which dipped to a 2.1/ 3 at 9:30 p.m. (also #4).
In week two news as the Tuesday anchor, drama “The Originals” on The CW perked up to a 1.6/ 2 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was 23 percent above the 1.3/ 2 one week earlier and 33 percent above “Hart of Dixie” on the year-ago evening (1.2/ 2 on 10/16/12). Despite the stronger lead-in support, “Supernatural” remained flat from its week-ago season-opener with a 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 15 percent above the series-premiere of failed drama “Emily Owens, M.D.” on the year-ago evening (1.3/ 2 on 10/16/12).

They should definitely relocate Trophy Wife after Modern Family. Super Fun Night isn't so bad and I'm sure ABC is gonna keep it to pair it with Mixology come midseason so its just a matter of where it should go.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Agents of Shield (don't feel like typing the periods, sorry) has stopped the fall, mostly. The show seems lackluster but I hope it does decently.
ReplyDeleteSo does this mean SPN is around 1.0? Or .09? I can never read these properly. Don't you think that's decent considering they were up against an all new episode of The Voice this week (last week was a clip show)?
Last week Supernatural had a 1.5 in these ratings and it got a 1.2, however last year when it got 1.5's regularly and it's ratings translated from that into 0.8 - 1 so who knows what it will be.
ReplyDeleteThanks. It's all Greek to me. I am a little confused at talk of how it didn't match The Originals, because it's going against much tougher competition than The Originals. I guess if there is a huge difference in their demo today I will understand the comparison more. We'll see what it is.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a huge increase for the originals. I would be very happy to see that translated into 18-49 ratings, but as always, I take these with a huge grain of salt especially when it comes to the cw. Person of Interest also seems to have done better than usual and even B99 appears to be fighting, so good news for me. Agents of Shield appears to have stabilized, which is great.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. 'Trophy Wife' is the best new comedy with 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine', 'The Goldbergs' is great too. And, I LOVE 'The Mindy Project'.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you minus the The Goldbergs, wasn't really feeling it.
ReplyDeleteUgh I am really enjoying Trophy Wife.
ReplyDeleteGlad the AoS is stabilizing.
I don't worry about Agents of SHIELD. It does so well in the DVR ratings that these numbers always go up.
ReplyDeleteGreat for The Originals
ReplyDeleteNo problem. It seems we have a negative nancy disliking the comments for no reason though lol.
ReplyDeleteIt's probably because we're talking about Supernatural, why is it always about Supernatural, etc. etc...
ReplyDeleteUgh. I was really hoping 'Dads' would go down so it and 'Mindy' would be closer to being shipped to Fridays.
ReplyDeletelets see how that translates in to A 18-49
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess 1.0 for TO and 1.1 for SPN
this man is delusional they are not going to replace the average rated SFN for the piss poor rated TW, Trophy Wife will be cancelled by mid season.
ReplyDeletePeople must be bored today and decided to play the downvote game.
ReplyDeleteGoing up from the timeslot premiere would be a big deal and very good for the originals. I am really loving the show and I didn't expect to at all, so I would be happy for it.
ReplyDeleteI have given up on it because of the ratings, I don't like being burned like that. I still hope it improves though, but I don't see much hope I am afraid.
ReplyDeleteI down voted the comment because it didnt make sense what do DVR ratings have to do with the show aparently 'always going up'?
ReplyDeleteit will be interesting to see if it actually has stabilised
ReplyDeleteEverything SHOULD go up in 8/7 hour because no more TV. That explains TO and FOX comedies. The fact that AGENTS still slipped a little isn't good. Not into the show, but hope it stabilizes for its fans.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but I think we all should in general disregard 0.1 osculations as changes in the ratings. For the most part, it could simply be due to rounding, and the sample size is just not large enough to have a margin of error smaller than that. It is not statistically significant, so I don't think we should look at it as part of a trend. 0.2/0.3 oscillations, then yes, I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteGoing up ratings-wise. I didn't know i had to spell it out.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not mistaken the DVR ratings is separate from actual overnight ratings which why I guess they downvoted your comment
ReplyDeleteMindy now tied in the demo with certain-to-be-cancelled Dads, and behind B99 for 2nd week in a row. Bye, Mindy!
ReplyDeleteVERY Impressive. Smart move CW. I'm so happy for the cast and crew!!
ReplyDelete1.1 for Originals impressive. :D
ReplyDeleteagain what has one to do with the other?
ReplyDeleteMark Pedowitz does not go by these ratings for the CW. He counts Internet, streaming, DVR, and people sharing. He knows the fans of his shows. He says the network can't go by these and be honest with itself. Makes sense.
ReplyDeleteIt depends. Live + same day DVR = very relevant. Live + 7 day DVR = not so relevant.
ReplyDeleteWow at The Originals!!! I'm glad that is going well!!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery impressed with The Originals. Is that 1.1 up from its premier episode?
ReplyDeleteGlad the originals Is improving.
ReplyDeleteSHield Is becoming a Once upon a Time level hit
Me too. I love the show much more than I expected.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural equaled The Originals in ratings so Berman's early comment was too early. Haha :P
ReplyDeleteYes! CF went up...i love that show
ReplyDeleteVery happy for the originals increase. If only the cw could increase the Wednesday shows to this level, the move would have been 100% worth it. Also, unclear so far if the vampire diaries wasn't excessively hurt by spinning out the originals, we have to see how the season progresses. Disappointed that B99 or POI didn't go up. I think Shield could be adjusted up, in which case it would look like it has evened out. The Voice is a bit too down, it should be adjusted up but still. I am not sure if it isn't better for them to just have it at 8. TBL would be such an improvement on thursdays, it should go there already.
ReplyDeleteYes. So far: 1.0. 0.9, 1.1 (preliminary). It's very good news.
ReplyDeleteYes it is. I think it only got a 0.8 or 0.9 for the first episode.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I was even undecided about watching it but I am loving it.
ReplyDeleteNot quite. If the demo is equal, the newbie show will almost certain loose against the older show, especially since said older show even has the advantage of skewing way younger, meaning being more profitable.
ReplyDeleteYay for SPN!
ReplyDeleteHe must look at them a little. No matter the fanbase they can't keep a 0.2 show on air, for example. The money they get from the shows (commercials, etc.) matter too.
ReplyDeleteSHIELD seems to have stabilized in the high 2's. It's still doing good. Nice increase for The Originals! I love it so much.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is against a new episode of The Voice. That's something.
ReplyDeleteWell they kept The Carrie Diaries on...
ReplyDeleteI wish Marc would just shut up trashing about spn for 1 friggin second, TO is great and gain some increase, but spn's 1.5/ translated to more viewers than TO's, and on par on 18-49Demo, spn didn't "remaind flat", and it never did this season, last episode is the top rated CW show! did Marc read about 18-49 demo?
ReplyDeleteAgree with both, yes!
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's the right way of thinking about it. The right way, IMO, is "how many dramas did the cw want for the fall?". Answer is 9. Then "how many returning hours are needed?" Answer is 6. Then it's all about pecking order. The Carrie Diaries was a more suitable option than Cult or 90210 (the only two dramas they cancelled in May), therefore it got the 9th renewal.
ReplyDeleteExactly, whilst Pedowitz might "say" he doesn't, the important people that matter, the advertisers, do.
ReplyDeleteIf advertisers don't pay for ad slots the shows and the network would simply fail to exist.
As CP mentions, shows with 0.2/0.3 are very unlikely to get a new season unless, like nikitia they are close to syndication.
Can someone please explain to me about the voice's time slot? why is it only 1 hour on this tuesday? is it gonna stay that way? and how many more episode are left this season? and will it have a hiatus or any more clip show coming? it's really confusing.
ReplyDeleteI try to find it on NBC's website but can't find these info, and I don't live in the US .
The Voice usually airs for 2 hours on Mondays, and 1 hour on Tuesdays. There's no way of telling how many episodes are left, as each season seems to have a different number of episodes.
ReplyDeleteReally? Berman didn't say anything negative."Remained flat" is certainly not negative.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like SHIELD is finally settling in.
ReplyDeletethanks, I was just wondering why it seems to be changing all the time. And they never specify how many episode each year? just see how it goes? frigging reality show.
ReplyDeleteHe did not trash Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteDo you even know what "remained flat" mean? It means it's ratings were same compared to last week. Also Berman does his analysis on the Households, not 18 to 49 demo.
IKR. Some people.
ReplyDeleteGo,go Supernatural :D <3 So happy for the ratings!!!
ReplyDeletei am very happy to see the originals increase in ratings. last nights episode was great and the show seems like its going to reach its full potential.
ReplyDeleteThe different episode numbers are mainly due to the format changes they have each season.
ReplyDeletehow is new girl not a loser? it's ratings are abysmal
ReplyDeleteI think it's too late for that. I am rooting for Trophy Wife but I am not sure the move would make sense at this point.
ReplyDeletebecause its FOX's best show on tuesday night.
ReplyDeleteI think the cw best shot is keeping its tuesday and wednesday shows plus vampire diaries for next year. Those are its top 5 shows, the weakest beginning tomorrow people but that pairs nicely with Arrow. Out of the 100, star-crossed and reign one of them should do well than it can go with TVD on thursday. Then they just need new shows to strengthen monday and friday.
ReplyDeleteShould I be worried about The Goldbergs? It's a very good comedy.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, The Originals is a hit for the CW so far! And congratulations, SPN, I don't watch, but that's impressive for a show in its 9th season. Why Marc doesn't deem the two shows as winners, though? He does it to Arrow, which gets as much viewers and recently a lower demo, but no love for SPN and TO? But I guess I shouldn't bother, I know he's crazy.
ReplyDeleteI could understand it if it was justified, but lately everyone is slamming him and half the time the man isn't saying anything negative.
ReplyDeletePeople getting their panties all twisted and causing and uproar! :P
Except Nikita won't even reach syndication with its 6 episodes so I don't understand if they want syndication, why didn't they make more episodes?
ReplyDeleteIt's the way it's worded. The Originals went up yet SPN was flat.
ReplyDeleteIt WAS flat (even with last week).
ReplyDeleteIn final ratings, Dads (1.5) beat Mindy (1.4).
ReplyDeleteIn other words, no.
0.1 rating differences are not meaningful and are not what will make the difference between canceling and renewing. They are most often due to rounding and due to statistical error.
ReplyDeleteGo, POI, go!
ReplyDeleteThe Goldbergs is funny. Like Trophy Wife, too. Hope they do better in the future.
