-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped Tuesday, of course, besting No. 2 NBC by a considerable 58 percent in the overnights. But the results among adults 18-49 (as well as other key young adult demographics) could be neck-and-neck between the two.
Rock-solid “NCIS” led the night with a 12.2 rating/19 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. Next was dominant performances by spin-off “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.4/15 at 9 p.m.), followed by relocated “Person of Interest” (8.1/14 at 10 p.m.), which was only 10 percent below the 9.0/14 it scored one year earlier in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour (out of “Two and a Half Men”).
In season-premiere news, “The Biggest Loser” on NBC – now a one-hour edition – finished third at 8 p.m. with a respectable 4.9/ 8 in the overnights. Comparably, that was a nine percent increase from its most recent time period opening performance (4.4/ 6 from 8-10 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013), which translated into 6.39 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data. “The Biggest Loser” previewed on Jan. 6, 2013 with a similar 4.7/ 7 in the overnights.
Next on NBC was a now one-hour Tuesday edition of “The Voice” (#2: 8.5/14), which will own the 9 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 (and other key demos), followed by relocated “Chicago Fire” at a second-place 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m. Week-to-week, “Chicago Fire” increased by six percent, with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.7/14) of 61 percent.
On ABC, week four of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” finished second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 5.1/ 8, which was just four percent below the 5.3/ 9 one week earlier. And that 5.3 in the overnights translated into 7.87 million viewers and a 2.9/ 9 among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). In other words: this is still positive. Four-week overnight track for “Marvel’s Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D”: 7.7/12 – 5.6/ 9 – 5.3/ 9 – 5.1/ 9.
Week four of ABC lead-out sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.7/ 6) and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.9/ 5) also slipped to series lows, with erosion from one week earlier of seven percent for “The Goldbergs” and 12 percent for “Trophy Wife.” Four-week overnight track for “The Goldbergs”: 6.0/ 9 – 4.3/ 7 – 4.0/ 6 – 3.7/ 6. Four-week overnight track for “Trophy wife”: 4.7/ 7 – 3.3/ 5 – 3.5/ 5 – 2.9/ 5. Note to ABC: If “Super Fun Night” ultimately fails, and chances are it will, “Trophy Wife” looks more compatible out of “Modern Family.”
At 10 p.m., another encore of ABC’s “Scandal” in place of canceled “Lucky 7” could not compete with a 2.0/ 4 (#3) at 10 p.m.
On Fox, both “Dads” (#4: 2.7/ 4) and “Brooklyn Nine Nine” (#4: 2.8/ 5) posted overnight growth from one week earlier, with both up by 12 percent. Comparably, “Dads” was just four percent below “Raising Hope” on the year-ago evening (2.8/ 4 on 10/16/12), while “Brooklyn Nine Nine” increased by 33 percent from short-lived “Ben and Kate” (2.1/ 3). As new shows begin to settle in at this point, any growth must be considered a positive. And, let’s be honest, that prostate exam scene on “Dads” last night was a hoot!
Next on Fox was “New Girl” at a fourth-place 2.8/ 4 at 9 p.m., which did not build from one week earlier, followed by sophomore “The Mindy Project,” which dipped to a 2.1/ 3 at 9:30 p.m. (also #4).
In week two news as the Tuesday anchor, drama “The Originals” on The CW perked up to a 1.6/ 2 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was 23 percent above the 1.3/ 2 one week earlier and 33 percent above “Hart of Dixie” on the year-ago evening (1.2/ 2 on 10/16/12). Despite the stronger lead-in support, “Supernatural” remained flat from its week-ago season-opener with a 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 15 percent above the series-premiere of failed drama “Emily Owens, M.D.” on the year-ago evening (1.3/ 2 on 10/16/12).

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the
Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the
Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
