Metered Market Wednesday Ratings
ABC’s “Super Fun Night” Loses Steam; Positive Sampling for “The Tomorrow People” on The CW
Wednesday 10/09/13
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.4/11
Fox 5.3/ 9
ABC 5.0/ 8
NBC 4.0/ 7
CW 1.9/ 3
———-
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 10/10/12:
NBC: + 5, CBS: – 9, CW: -17, Fox: -22, ABC: -26
———-
-Winners:
“Survivor” (CBS), “The Middle” (ABC), “Arrow” (CW), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “The Tomorrow People” (CW)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Back in the Game” (ABC), “Ironside” (NBC)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this third Wednesday of the new TV season in the household overnights with its combination of “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (#1: 6.1 rating/10 share), “Criminal Minds” (#1 overall from 9-10 p.m.: 7.2/12) and granddaddy “CSI” (#1: 5.9/10), which is showing its age with slippage of 16 percent from the year-ago evening (7.0/12 on 10/10/12). “Survivor,” which has added an entirely new (and welcome) twist to an established formula, dipped by nine percent year-to-year (versus a 6.7/11 on 10/10/12), while “Criminal Minds” was right on par. Twelve years into its run and “Survivor” is looking as fresh as it ever was creatively.
In series-premiere news, drama “The Tomorrow People” on The CW was sampled with a 1.8/ 3 (#5) in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 12 percent above year-ago occupant “Supernatural” (1.6/ 3 on 10/10/12), with retention out of the second season-premiere of “Arrow” (#5: 2.1/ 3 at 8 p.m.) of a solid 86 percent. In The CW universe, consider this a very positive start. “Arrow,” however, did drop by 30 percent from its inflated year-ago series-opener (3.0/ 5 on 10/10/12). But a 2.1/ 3 for The CW is still a “winning” performance.
In episode two news, “Super Fun Night” with Rebel Wilson on ABC dipped by 15 percent from its week-ago debut with a 4.7/ 8 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, retention for “Super Fun Night” out of “Modern Family” (#1 for the evening: 7.6/12 at 9 p.m.) was a lackluster 62 percent. The bottom line: Girls wanting to just have fun is no better than anything else airing out of “Modern Family.”
Earlier in the evening on ABC was always reliable “The Middle” at a second-place 5.5/ 9 at 8 p.m., which was five percent below the year-ago evening (5.8/ 9 on 10/10/12). Next was week three of “Back in the Game” at a third-place 4.2/ 7 at 8:30 p.m., which dropped by another 11 percent from episode two (4.7/ 8 on Oct. 2) and was nine percent below year-ago occupant “The Neighbors” (4.6/ 7 on 10/10/12). Three week overnight track for “Back in the Game”: 5.4/ 9 – 4.7/ 8 – 4.2/ 7.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was critically acclaimed “Nashville” at a second-place 4.1/ 7, which was equal to its week-ago season-opener (which translated into 5.98 million viewers and a 1.9 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data). In other words, it could be better but it also could be worse.
Over at NBC, the news remained mixed for relocated “Revolution” at a fourth-place 3.6/ 6 at 8 p.m. Comparably, the positive spin was growth from failed year-ago sitcom occupants “Animal Practice” (2.7/ 4 on 10/10/12) and “Guys With Kids” (2.8/ 4) of an average 31 percent. But versus “Revolution” out of “The Voice” on the year-ago week (5.2/ 9 on 10/08/12), this was a loss of 31 percent. Yes, lead-in still matters.
Veteran “Law & Order: SVU” on NBC rose to a 4.3/ 7 at 9 p.m. (#4), which was on par with the year-ago telecast. But week two of the revival of “Ironside” slipped to a third-place 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was down by 22 percent from its week-ago opener (5.0/ 9 on Oct. 2) and 17 percent from “Chicago Fire” on the year-ago evening (4.7/ 8 on 10/10/12). Given the particularly older skew last week, consider this new “Ironside” a goner.
Fox capped off the night with two-hours of “The X Factor” at a 5.3/ 8 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. While that does look respectable on paper, it is a loss of 22 percent from the 6.8/11 on the year-ago evening. Note to Simon Cowell: this is not 20-million viewers.

I am really rooting for the arrow/the tomorrow people combo (and for revolution) but I remind people that overnights are especially misleading when it comes to the cw due to their younger skewing audience and low demo numbers in general. We need to wait for demo numbers!
ReplyDeleteYes, let's compare Revolution at 8 pm on Wednesday to Revolution at 10 pm on Monday with The Voice as a lead in and call it 'mixed'.
ReplyDeleteApples and Oranges, Berman, Revolution is doing fine on Wednesdays.
While Revolution is not exactly safe (although I argue that it is doing slightly better than most people's expectations) and is a bubble show, I agree with you that comparing one thing to the other is absurd and completely apples with oranges.
ReplyDeleteDang it X Factor! Why couldn't it stay down?
ReplyDeleteIs someone just having fun downvoting me? I stated no opinion whatsoever and attacked no show, just went for straight facts. Whatever.
ReplyDeleteTrolls have been doing that on the ratings posts for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI imagine you are rooting for it to go down so that Bones can stay midweek? At this point I doubt it will happen, even though it should. The problem is also that it is not a long term solution. Where would Bones go when AI starts? They are not reducing AI's hours I think nor am I sure they should. As weak as it is, AI is still no X-Factor. I think Bones' best bet is going to thursdays but there is a timing issue because glee will likely spike today with the finn tribute episode taking away any incentive to sending it to fridays, even if FOX leaves to regret it later in the season. As for tuesdays, I think it is a worst option for the show than fridays to be honest, since the ncis twins would murder it I am affraid.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know who is voting you down! You are just stating your opinion, which I agree with!
ReplyDeleteThe thing is that not even an opinion like saying "I didn't like show X or Y", it's just stating that these overnight ratings are especially misleading for the cw and giving a clear factual example of that. Trolls have nothing to do I guess!
ReplyDeleteI think someone on SpoilerTV should find out who votes down by their IP address. I know it's impossible but it doesn't hurt to try.
ReplyDeleteIt's like Dante from TVbythenumbers who trash talks about good shows.
ReplyDeleteYes, and everytime you mention the downvote, all it accomplishes it to encourage them to do it again.
ReplyDeleteJust ignore them, and don't mention them and they will get bored.
Yup.
ReplyDeleteWOW, its probably the first time i see both CW shows as Winners. With TO,Spl,TVD,Arrow,TTP doing good + HoD close to syndication it will be hard for Beauty and the Beast, The Carrie Diaries. I hope that Reign will have good numbers next week
ReplyDeleteArrow is doing good.So much for theory Summer Glau being on show immedetly kills It.Comparing it to series premiere Isn't a good compassion. It looks like Tomorrow people Is benefitting from arrow as lead In.
ReplyDeleteSummer Glau also had a recurring role on Grey's Anatomy Season 8 and the show is still on.
ReplyDeleteMe too,Reign is something something different and based on the promotion and social media it should do good.Just yesterday before Tomorrow People premiered it had more likes.I am expecting to premiere good!
ReplyDeleteWhy go through so much work when you can just ignore them.
ReplyDeleteHe especially hates Chicago Fire this season.
ReplyDeleteHaha that fella has some serious issues.
ReplyDeleteTrue. She also played herself on Big bang theory.
ReplyDeleteI guess the summer killing show only applies to Fox and NBC shows.Although chuck went another season after she was on.
Totally agree with you bones doesnt deserve this but looks like they'll move to fridays.. There's still time but doubt it'll change
ReplyDeleteActually, yesterday he was comparing this year's season premiere to last seasons SECOND episode, which is kind of a pointless comparison, IMO and it almost seemed like he did it to brag about how Arrow "helped" SPN last season. But whatever, the rating were great for the show and the demon was better than any episode last season. :)
ReplyDeleteReally curious to see what demon Tomorrow People gets, I hope the CW will have another decent night in Wednesdays!
Yeah, you're right, that's another pointless random comparison. So my point is not as strong but it still stands because he said the show dipped when it went up in fact (even comparing the 1.2 with the 1.0 it got for last season's second episode)
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's why we need to take the HH ratings with a grain of salt. :) Plus, when Arrow got around a 2.1 last season in HH and SPN got 1.5, they were only one demo point a part, or even tied. So it's really hard to judge what the demo may be based on the HH ratings.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am. And oh I know it's not a long term solution. I'm just thinking until the Christmas break because that gives enough time to see how Almost Human does.
ReplyDeleteAnd I definitely agree with you about Tuesdays. It would get slaughtered!
Oh, and I know Thursdays will never happen (no matter how much I wish it would) that's why been rooting for Wednesdays.
I still worry for it. I really love this season so far, it has a lot of stuff I thought it was missing during certain parts of it's first season.
ReplyDeleteMay be its Mark berkman himself!!
ReplyDeleteLast week Berman gave “Ironside” an honorable mention. That was risible.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a real chance it's put in hiatus until winter. But then again I am not sure they have enough time to run it. I think they should have gone with this:
ReplyDeleteMonday: Almost Human/ Sleepy Hollow
Tuesday: Glee/ New Girl/ Us and Them
Wednesday: Brooklyn Nine-Nine/Enlisted/ The X-Factor
Thursday: The X-Factor/Bones
Friday: The X-Factor/Masterchef Jr.
Arrow/Tomorrow People did okay, not as high as I expected though :(
ReplyDeleteArrow only 0.9? Wtf? :(
ReplyDeleteI feel physically ill...
i cant see the table, where is it, i only see white square where the table is/are.
ReplyDeleteClear your cookies and try again. Same problem happened to me yesterday but clearing my cookies worked just fine.
ReplyDeleteok, could you just see how modern family (abc ) have in raitings ?
ReplyDeleteI will take it moving to Fridays over it being put on hiatus. Because as much as I don't think it deserves to be on Fridays, it really DOES NOT deserve to be put on hiatus, unlike some other shows *cough* The Mindy Project and Dads (if it somehow finds a way to survive the fall) *cough*.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I like your schedule. :)
3.8 10.43
ReplyDelete3.8 and 10.43 million
ReplyDeleteok, thanks :)
ReplyDeleteAndy, I don't know if your aware but in the Ratings Chart Playground in STV Plus, Ironside is not listed. Not that i expect the show to be around too much longer!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're right. I just hope CW's new season is like last season, except Beauty and the Beast all of their new shows were stable (they just premiered very low last year, but they were stable overall).
ReplyDeleteThis year they premiered higher lets just hope they are stable (TO was stable, maybe thats a good sign) and can stay close at there premiere numbers, everything over 0.7 is a hit for CW.
I echo this. I hope Revolution has stabilized. It appears so. I would be very happy with an upwards adjustment too as meaningless as they are in the end.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hope AHS dominated at 10. I have yet to watch last night's episode but I adored last season (I was not a fan of season 1 though)
I also had higher hopes :S It's kind of sad for both but it's even sadder for the cw. I did say all along that supernatural was helping arrow as much as arrow was helping supernatural though and it appears I was right. I hope they go up but I doubt it to be honest. Arrow had such an amazing finale, I thought it would be way higher.
ReplyDeleteWhere exactly are you looking? What chart?
ReplyDeleteI agree, I am sad for them. It's still okay in the relative ratings world of the cw, but for the network's sake they should have done better. I had higher expectations.
ReplyDeleteOuch for Arrow and The Tomorrow People, I was hoping they would both cross 1.0.
ReplyDeleteRevolution finally seems to be settling in.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think hiatus could be better because they could bring it back to midweek if Almost Human fails, if they realize they have to move Glee or if they realize they have to can one hour of comedies. If not, then to fridays it goes, but it gives it a bit more of flexibility that way.
ReplyDeleteOn the left side where all the shows are listed, where you could search for a particular show, that is where Ironside is not listed. In STVPlus Ratings Chart.
ReplyDeleteThankfully!
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDeletehttp://stvplus.com/show/338/Ironside#articles
ReplyDeleteIt had the same rating for the season finale, so it's nothing bad. Will probably be adjusted up.
ReplyDeleteYa.But its not listed where ALL the shows are listed, that is what i am trying to point out. 24 is listed but not Ironside and right now Ironside is on the air? Maybe i am not explaining myself well?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am not getting where you are looking for it.
ReplyDeleteI actually think the typical pattern is: Season premiere > Previous Season Finale ~ Fall Ratings Level > Spring Ratings Level. This varies of course, but in general it is this, so I wish Arrow would have done better, because if it falls much it will be kind of a let down for the cw, even though I say it still gets renewed comfortably.
ReplyDeleteWhere EXACTLY are you looking. Please give precise screens and buttons you are pressing.
ReplyDeleteYeah I know that, but what I am saying is AT LEAST it matched the finale, though I wish it was higher.
ReplyDeleteI liked Arrow enough last year, I didn't think it was amazing or anything and I didn't bother catching up with any episodes that I missed. But that season finale was incredible, it had me counting down the weeks for it to come back. I really did think it would be much higher than this.
ReplyDeleteI echo that to a smaller degree. I liked the pilot quite a lot, thought the late fall episodes were meh and lacked a bit of direction, but then I thought it got really greater in winter and spring and I started to really like it a lot. However, the finale really did elevate it to another level, it was by far their best episode. I am very surprised it didn't do better at least for the premiere.
ReplyDeleteWell SUpernatural fans can boost it did better than arrow.
ReplyDeleteAlso notice 0.9 Is what arrow got In demo.Same as the originals.Tomorrow people's demo Is lower than the originals and arrow.
I'm not positive but I think laura means here: http://stvplus.com/ratings and then the list of shows on the left where you can either scroll the list or search but Ironside is there so I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteI get what you're saying, I really do, but it doesn't deserve to be on hiatus because it's been doing better than the majority of the non-animated scripted shows Fox has. Especially in viewers. I know viewers don't really count, but still.
ReplyDeleteWhoops, Arrow and tomorrow ppl only 0.9 and 0.8, even though their viewers numbers are good, it's still a bit pre mature to put those two on winner, especially for Arrow who from the last year Marc should know it's viewer skew younger.
ReplyDeletelooking at Marc's analysis really gives people the wrong impression of CW doing better on Wed then Tue. Seriously what is the point of analyzing viewer numbers, when it can be so different from the demo which actually matters?
Not looking good for both show, original got a 0.9 but it's the 2nd and repeated episode, it's likely stablized on range above 0.7, while tomorrow ppl is likely to decrease from it's premiere, and consider how fast ratings can drop, shows started over 1.0 like secret circle gets cancel because of rating drops. tomorrow ppl is not in a very good place
Arrow is not very optimistic either, last year it keeps a downward trend and ends up tying supernatural, this year didn't even start higher than last year's finale, the room for drop is not that much. But I do believe it would be fine this season consider it's a comic book franchise and already develped a fan base from last year. But CW wed may end up being a 0.7 Arrow with a 0.5 tomorrow ppl, just very "average" on CW, not exactly a hit.
Damn, I was hoping tomorrow ppl would be a hit, the promo looks so good.
Sorry Andy & Babar,on the phone with Fed Ex,i come back and my cat Milo is using the laptop as a heating pad! :P
ReplyDeleteSo before i drive you all crazy just let me say it was my cookies..I cleared the cache and what do you know, presto, like magic Ironside is listed...sorry about that.
and all of this all because i was curious about the rating from last week, and i don't even watch the show!!!!
Yep,you got it... ;)
ReplyDeleteSheesh. Arrow and Tomorrow People awful ratings.
ReplyDeleteSo is Ironside not there for you? Cause it is for me.
ReplyDeleteYep,now it it.Just had to clear my cache! feel so silly,ha!
ReplyDeleteMy response for you and Andy right above you.
ReplyDeleteClear your cookies cache and check again. Had the same, saw someone say that on another topic and now I see the tables :)
ReplyDeleteNo problem.
ReplyDeleteBut the problem is precisely what they do with the show between November and christmas break. I don't think it's feasible to send it to fridays and then back to mondays, it would bleed too much. Also I am praying that Almost Human succeeds cause it looks amazing so I wouldn't want that either. Anyway, back to bones, I think the bottom line is that long term, it is better for the show if it's put on hiatus than if its sent to fridays right away, even if that's better on the short term.
ReplyDeleteNot awful ratings. Certainly disappointing, especially Arrow, but not awful! This is the same network that had shows at 0.4/0.3 this monday.
ReplyDeleteThe Originals was not a repeated episode, it was an original one (no pun intended)
ReplyDeletethis is not the one they air last season in TVD?
ReplyDeleteOr (in November) send Mindy and Dads to Friday, Glee to Tuesday, and Bones to Thursday.
ReplyDeleteNow I know it will never happen, but it's another option besides a hiatus. Lets face it, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on the 'hiatus' option. :)
No. The episode they aired last thursday was a re-done version of that episode you are mentioned, but with some new scenes from another character's point of view. This tuesday they aired a brand new episode.
ReplyDeleteAhah maybe. And for the record I would much rather go with that option than the hiatus, I just don't think it's realistic that's all!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it had the same rating like the finale, but CW promoted it, put it online, had the entire repeated during the summer, had an retrospective and most hit-shows have after the first season ending such a great buzz new viewers often tend to start watching the show, I'm glad it is steady, but I really thought with all that factors it could maybe hit again an 1,3 or something. :(
ReplyDeleteok, are you Norwegian too ? your name is a Norwegian name
ReplyDeleteNope I am a dutchie from the Netherlands :)
ReplyDeleteok, your name (karin) is also a Norwegian name :)
ReplyDeleteI totally get it, and like I said, the Thursday move will never happen, but at least it's an option. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like Back In The Game is going bye, bye and soon. Awful show, that should not have even been picked up in the first place. Maggie Lawson is lucky that she still has Psych to fall back on, which incidentally she is so much better on. Maggie as Juliet O'Hara on Psych is so much more than this Terry character, who is just plain unlikeable and totally unoriginal. She will always be Juliet O'Hara to me and that will be the role that every one will remember her for. Psych is as good as it is going to get for Maggie. Every other show that she has been on other than Psych has failed miserably and Back In The Game is just another example of that.
ReplyDelete
