-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this third Wednesday of the new TV season in the household overnights with its combination of “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (#1: 6.1 rating/10 share), “Criminal Minds” (#1 overall from 9-10 p.m.: 7.2/12) and granddaddy “CSI” (#1: 5.9/10), which is showing its age with slippage of 16 percent from the year-ago evening (7.0/12 on 10/10/12). “Survivor,” which has added an entirely new (and welcome) twist to an established formula, dipped by nine percent year-to-year (versus a 6.7/11 on 10/10/12), while “Criminal Minds” was right on par. Twelve years into its run and “Survivor” is looking as fresh as it ever was creatively.

In series-premiere news, drama “The Tomorrow People” on The CW was sampled with a 1.8/ 3 (#5) in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 12 percent above year-ago occupant “Supernatural” (1.6/ 3 on 10/10/12), with retention out of the second season-premiere of “Arrow” (#5: 2.1/ 3 at 8 p.m.) of a solid 86 percent. In The CW universe, consider this a very positive start. “Arrow,” however, did drop by 30 percent from its inflated year-ago series-opener (3.0/ 5 on 10/10/12). But a 2.1/ 3 for The CW is still a “winning” performance.

In episode two news, “Super Fun Night” with Rebel Wilson on ABC dipped by 15 percent from its week-ago debut with a 4.7/ 8 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, retention for “Super Fun Night” out of “Modern Family” (#1 for the evening: 7.6/12 at 9 p.m.) was a lackluster 62 percent. The bottom line: Girls wanting to just have fun is no better than anything else airing out of “Modern Family.”

Earlier in the evening on ABC was always reliable “The Middle” at a second-place 5.5/ 9 at 8 p.m., which was five percent below the year-ago evening (5.8/ 9 on 10/10/12). Next was week three of “Back in the Game” at a third-place 4.2/ 7 at 8:30 p.m., which dropped by another 11 percent from episode two (4.7/ 8 on Oct. 2) and was nine percent below year-ago occupant “The Neighbors” (4.6/ 7 on 10/10/12). Three week overnight track for “Back in the Game”: 5.4/ 9 – 4.7/ 8 – 4.2/ 7.

At 10 p.m. on ABC was critically acclaimed “Nashville” at a second-place 4.1/ 7, which was equal to its week-ago season-opener (which translated into 5.98 million viewers and a 1.9 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data). In other words, it could be better but it also could be worse.

Over at NBC, the news remained mixed for relocated “Revolution” at a fourth-place 3.6/ 6 at 8 p.m. Comparably, the positive spin was growth from failed year-ago sitcom occupants “Animal Practice” (2.7/ 4 on 10/10/12) and “Guys With Kids” (2.8/ 4) of an average 31 percent. But versus “Revolution” out of “The Voice” on the year-ago week (5.2/ 9 on 10/08/12), this was a loss of 31 percent. Yes, lead-in still matters.

Veteran “Law & Order: SVU” on NBC rose to a 4.3/ 7 at 9 p.m. (#4), which was on par with the year-ago telecast. But week two of the revival of “Ironside” slipped to a third-place 3.9/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was down by 22 percent from its week-ago opener (5.0/ 9 on Oct. 2) and 17 percent from “Chicago Fire” on the year-ago evening (4.7/ 8 on 10/10/12). Given the particularly older skew last week, consider this new “Ironside” a goner.

Fox capped off the night with two-hours of “The X Factor” at a 5.3/ 8 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. While that does look respectable on paper, it is a loss of 22 percent from the 6.8/11 on the year-ago evening. Note to Simon Cowell: this is not 20-million viewers.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
