On what we can expect in season 4 of Raising Hope.
“It’s been a pretty good season. I had a small explosion and I was squirted with sort of a geyser of water the other night, so I get hit with a bunch of liquids. [Plot-wise], I think we’re going to expand on the two marriages on the show, the two family units around which the show [has] evolved, which is Jimmy and Sabrina’s relationship, their marriage and their little family. And we’re going to continue to see Burt and Virginia just be insane and stupid, and I think that’s great. I think that’s a wonderful thing.”
On what he learned from guest star Jeffrey Tambor.
“He would regale me with stories about how beautiful Canada is. Did you know Canada is beautiful? You can have boats there! It would be a fine idea to take a boat to Canada. That’s what I learned from Jeffrey Tambor!”
On watching Baylie and Rylie (who both play Hope) grow up on set.
“[It’s] mostly terrifying. There’s no better way to know how rapidly you’re aging than to watch young life evolve in front of your eyes, from a puddle of gooey flesh into lanky little humanoids. I sincerely hope I’ve had no influence upon them. I don’t know that I’m a person who should influence children. I’m not confident that I’m a healthy or constructive presence. If I have, I hope it’s mainly that they feel like they’ve learned to climb on things and get muddy and laugh at sort of the reckless absurdity of the world as frequently as possible.
“I think they know what’s going on. I mean, they knew how to hit a mark at age two, which is confounding and astonishing. They can do dialogue, they can act. So, they’re three and a half years old but they’re tiny little actors. They’re making choices and they’re listening. They’re pretty remarkable little elven creatures.”
On his request to Raising Hope fans this season.
“I would like people to watch it. And the people that do watch it, I would like them to persuade their friends that they should also be watching it. I’d prefer if they watched it live, but I’ll accept DVR and online. And if they stayed and watched through the commercials, I would particularly appreciate it. And if they tweeted often about it and hashtagged it, that would also be something I’d look forward to. If people mentioned to each other that it was occurring on Fridays this year, instead of Tuesdays, that would be great. And that they make sure to know that the premiere is on November 8, which is the day after my birthday. What a wonderful birthday present it would be for everyone in America to watch Raising Hope.”
